Hello,There is a lot of talkabout the decline of ourhigh streets, but I amhappy to report that herein Erdington, businessesare telling us that thetown centre is thriving, and many reported goodChristmas trading.

In a perverse way,Erdington, as a centre toprovide local needs, isvery often ‘under theradar’ because we arenot reliant on the manynational retail names thatare shutting up shop, giving a great chance forour many smallindependent retailers toshine.

We have seen a growthof new businesses herein the last few monthswith the likes of BorshchElectric, Curtain House,

Trutex School wear,Printerwise, and mostrecently, specialistbakery business CakeBox, all deciding toinvest in Erdington.

Historically ,this is howhigh streets grow andthrive, with businessesinvesting and shoppersshopping. To quote along standing tag line ofours, ‘Shop Local,Shop Erdington!’

In addition to great valueshopping, the towncentre is supported byevents at St Barnabaschurch, Erdington library, and the Oikos cafe.

Erdington is great shopping centrehowever there were no Hair andCosmetic shops originally, which weresearched in 2011.

Therefore, in March 2011 we openeda Hair and Cosmetic shop known asGlamour Hair and Cosmetics. Wehave been in this industry for nearly10 years and can now say we’re veryexperienced in providing human hair andwigs to the community for all theseyears. Not only are we known to haveexcellent customer service but also anunderstanding of how demanding thismarket is, therefore we take extra careof our customers by making sure all ourprices are affordable!

There was a huge demand for theseproducts in this market but at the timewe only had a small shop so we wantedto expand to accommodate ourcustomers. Finally, in 2019 we found amore compatible, bigger shop on theHigh Street and moved there just beforeChristmas which really boosted theChristmas spirits as we had lowprices for our opening week!

The new shop is calledGlamour Touch and has been ahuge success. We haveincreased our product variety asthe new shop is very spaciouswhich has made our customershappy.

Our products consist of cosmetics, human hair, wigs, electrical items alongwith makeup and accessories. All thiscomes at unbeatable cheap prices forour community, for instance our lacewigs start from only £10 and have beena massive hit.

We would love you to benefit from ourhigh quality products that are cheap.

We are open 7 days a week and ouropening hours are 9am-6:30pm Mon-Sat and Sunday 11am-5pm.

As a new Read Easy group isabout to launch in Erdington, we caughtup with Read Easy Regional Adviser KrisVentris-Field to hear about their plans. “We are looking for support tohelp us get the ball rolling on a brand newRead Easy group in Erdington. We knowthat around 20% adults inBirminghamcan’t read or struggle with everydayreading, and we’re passionate aboutchanging that with our proven, confidentialprogramme of free, one-to-one, volunteer-led adult reading coaching. We arecurrently looking for local people tosupport the development of a new groupby volunteering as Management Teammembers. Whether you’ve got existingskills you’d like to put to good use, or arelooking to develop new ones, being aRead Easy volunteer can be a greatchance to learn something new.” Read Easy UK currently supports32 affiliated groups across the country, stretching from Plymouth to Manchester. “The stark reality is that 2.4madults in the UK cannot read, while afurther 2.5m struggle to read,” Kris un-derlines. “On a practical level, this meansthat even carrying out everyday tasks canbe challenging, if not impossible. Many ofour new readers have never been to the

doctor as they’re too embarrassed tohave to read and fill in forms. Being una-ble to read and write is associated withhigher mortality, depression, isolationand mental health issues,” she reveals. “We know from experience thatpeople who cannot read are nervous andembarrassed about joining adult learn-ing groups. This is the motivation behindthe Read Easy model: to provide accessi-ble, free, and confidential one-to-onereading coaching wherever the need isgreatest. And this why we need yourhelp! “Volunteers also need to have theequivalent of at least a couple of hours aweek to spare, and some of this timeneeds to be within the working week inorder to network with other organisations”.The impact of learning to read is tangiblefor both Volunteers and Readers, as Krisconcludes by explaining. “The phrase wehear from our reader’s time-and-timeagain is ‘life-changing’. But for our volun-teers too, the process of helping adultslearn to read has a profound effect ontheir lives. If you’d like to play a key partin helping to transform the lives of adultsnear you, while developing existing skillsand learning new ones in a supportive, funenvironment, then please get in touch.”

Erdington’s John Taylor Hospice thisyear celebrates an incredible 110th

anniversary – marking more than acentury of caring for local people.

One of the oldest hospices in thecountry, John Taylor was founded in1910 by the people of Birmingham whofundraised to provide a ‘home of restfor the dying’.

Spearheaded by city doctor andsuffragette Dr Mary Darby Sturge, thehospice opened as the Taylor MemorialHome in Showell Green House inSparkhill near the then Women’sHospital.

The hospice was named afterBirmingham’s pioneering women’sgynaecologist John Taylor and initiallycared only for women withgynaecological cancers.

After the Second World War, thehospice moved into The Grange inErdington, its home for the past 70years.Hospice teams began caring for menin the 1970s, launched communityservices in the 1980s and branched outto care for people with a range ofconditions including motor neuronedisease and multiple sclerosis.

Today John Taylor Hospice is acharity which cares for around 2,000patients each year as well as providingsupport and wellbeing for their familiesand friends.

The 110th year will see John Taylorholding a host of special eventsincluding a Secret Garden Ball in June,a Summer Party in July, a Sunset Walkduring the summer and its annual Lightup a Life later in December.

There will alsobe a citywide artproject with anexhibition plannedfor later in the yearas well as acelebration party inthe autumn.

The hospicehas also created aspecial 110th

anniversary logo to be used during2020 and has carried out an extensiveresearch project into the hospice’shistory.

Hospice CEO Penny Venablessays: “John Taylor Hospice is uniquein its history. We were the first non-denominational hospice in the countryand were founded by people in the citywho recognised the need for a home inthe Midlands which could provide carefor patients at the end of their lives.

“More than a century later we arestill receiving funding from kind andgenerous people and companies whogive time and money so we cancontinue to provide much-neededspecialist care for patients and theirfamilies.

“Everyone who supports us duringour 110th anniversary year will behelping to ensure the legacy of care forlocal people for the next 110 years.”
