want to play with the ground, with the cliffs, crevasses and séracs. You simply fl y over obstacles that prevent skiers without wings access to the beauty of wonderful turns in deep snow.”
Aged 45, Bon is the “grandfather” of speed riding, the man credited with inventing the kite (or wing in speed riding vernacular) that gave rise to the birth of the sport he makes sound positively transcendental 14 years ago. A hybrid of the niche sports of paragliding, skydiving and freeriding, speed riding sees skiers don a harness rigged up to a lightweight kite, which enables them to become airborne for just enough time to launch off cliffs, hurtle down couloirs and outrace avalanches. It’s the sort of thing “normal” people watch incredulously on YouTube and dismiss as the domain of madmen.

→ There are few better places to stare at the night sky than Risco Caído and the Sacred Mountains of Gran Canaria, which were recently added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Not only do the island’s low light pollution, mild winds and clean skies make it possible to see some incredible constellations, this area in particular is home to archaeoastronomical sites left over by the original Canarii inhabitants. One of the most exciting examples is Cave Six, part of the network of artificial caves created more than six centuries ago. It acts as a huge solar and lunar calendar, complete with holes that let in light to mark the equinoxes – the only one of its kind on an island anywhere in the world. riscocaido.grancanaria.com

Has this Belgian made the world’s most sustainable jeans? Fashion’s most ubiquitous item just got a makeover thanks to Tom Duhoux, founder of HNST
→ Denim is the latest industry to shift focus from fast fashion to sustainability, and with 1.25 billion pairs of jeans sold annually, it’s not a moment too soon. Leading the way is Antwerp local Tom Duhoux, whose HNST (pronounced ‘Honest’) label recycles denim waste and turns it into new, sustainable – and stylish – jeans.
It was waste management expert Duhoux’s focus on circular design that led him into fashion. “Past innovations in fashion have been limited to how to produce more stock, and how to do it faster,” he explains. “Instead, I wanted to apply the rules of a circular economy and how it can produce something sustainable, and jeans seemed like the perfect thing to focus on. They combine lots of challenges – from the water and chemicals used to grow the cotton initially, to the toxicity of the indigo process... but they’re worn by everyone, so the potential for change is on a large scale.”
His solution? Inventing a fabric that can be used to create new jeans out of old jeans sourced in Antwerp – and eventually, from across Belgium. Once collected, the denim is shredded and mixed 50/50 with new Tencel fibres, spun to create a new yarn, and then used to produce new pairs of jeans. On its own, the recycled shredded denim wouldn’t be strong enough to be used to create new fabric, hence the need to add the Tencel, which as a product of wood pulp means the resulting yarn is able to be recycled again, completing the full circle.letsbehonest.eu

Bright, exciting,and beautiful to read...
Binspired magazine Mediakit 2020 5/10
As more people take more journeys, so travel media becomes stronger and more influential. This sector also stands unique in today’s advertising world, because of its growing – and captive – audience. Because readers can’t skip your ads while on a plane, you will be investing in their undivided attention. Combine our deep understanding of who is travelling, as well as where and when, with the inspirational content we produce, and it makes for a potent opportunity to get your message across – and make sure it sticks.

12 hours, three countries, one car – Jack Carter searches for the ultimate European road trip in the new Lexus UX

The scenic

lumped and dizzy in the front seat underneath the empyrean peaks of Mont Blanc, it appears I’m no match for the Alps’ highest mountain. But there’s no time
to wait for the altitude sickness to subside. I put the keys back in the ignition, roll the windows down and put the pedal to the fl oor, making my way for Italy – my third country of the morning.
It was only 30 minutes ago that I was stood nearly 4,000 metres above sea level, hanging over the canyon in a glass box. And now – as nausea makes way for euphoria – I’m hurtling through the Mont Blanc Tunnel in the Lexus UX Self-Charging Hybrid on my way to the sun-soaked Aosta Valley, wondering if anything could encapsulate the extremes of the European road trip better than this.
Travellers have never had it so good. Reasonably priced fl ights and short journey times have made it easier than ever to hop to a city of our choosing whenever that sense of adventure kicks in. Simply feed the cat, call the cab, catch the plane, drink the beer, then fl y back home – and you’ve had yourself a 21st-century city break. Too often, though, we miss out on discovering the things that make getting from A to B so thrilling – the hiking trails, the waterfalls, the peculiar regional towns along the way. It’s why the road trip remains one of the most sacred travel experiences out there.
Just as important as the journey, the playlist and even the ferocious snacking, however, is your mode of transport. Petrolhead or not, we’ve all dreamed of hitting Route 66 in a Pontiac or cruising Canada’s sublime Sea to Sky Highway in a Winnebago. And so here I am, battling the elements along this magnifi cent pocket of central Europe, in search of a route that can match up to these classic North American road trips. And if this journey is really going to compete with the very best, then I need a car fi t for the job.

Tournai
For a different point of view
One of the oldest cities in Belgium, Tournai’s rich history stretches back 2,000 years. The town has carefully restored and preserved the evidence of its prestigious past and is bursting with beautiful façades, historic districts, picturesque streets and two buildings on the Unesco World Heritage list: the nation's oldest belfry and a cathedral with five bell towers. Culture lovers will be drawn to the Museum of Fine Arts, designed by the renowned Art Nouveau architect Victor Horta and home to two works by Édouard Manet. For a breather, the cafés and restaurants on the triangular Grand-Place are ideal spots to sample some of the local beers. visittournai.be
Brussels
For an intriguing installationLighting up Brussels this month at KANAL-Centre Pompidou is an entire floor’s worth of experimental films by American artist Ericka Beckman, who was part of the Pictures Generation movement. The Super-8 Trilogy was inspired by the writing of Swiss psychologist Jean Piaget and questions the role of game playing in social and psychological constructions of Western, post-industrial societies. Get ready to see televised sports, musical comedy and the cultural norms of late-1970s America through an unexpectedly playful, flickering lens.
Other exhibitions include Phantom Offices, inspired by KANAL’s former life as a Citroën Garage, presenting a playful, surrealist re-creation of traditional workspaces; and Mere Constructions, offering a fresh take on Constructivism, reinvigorated by a range of new artists, such as Haegue Yang.kanal.brussels

The rural vistas of Dilbeek, near Brussels, take on a dreamlike quality in Bruegel’s Eye: Reconstructing the Landscape. Locations depicted by Flemish painter Pieter Bruegel the Elder are overlayed with installations by 14 contemporary artists, such as Guillaume Bijl and Lois Weinberger. See Sint-Anna church and Sint-Gertrudis-Pede watermill, to the west of Brussels, in a fresh context 450 years after the Flemish master’s death. Ride high in the forest at Limburg's latest project,
Cycling through the Trees
What makes a great cycling holiday? The combination of flat roads, clear routes and light traffic might be a dream when you’re riding to work, but is it enough to pack your bags and head out on that two-wheeled expedition you've always dreamed of? What really makes a trip special is the stunning surroundings – the dense forests or open landscapes – that inspire you to lift your head up from the handlebars.
Packed with all manner of stimulating sights, Limburg in Flanders is a cycling paradise, with trails that are geared up for all levels.
It was in 1995 when the cycle node system was unveiled: 2,000km of quiet and easy-to-navigate paths organised into numbered junctions that weave between picturesque towns, impressive castles and rolling countryside. Since then, Limburg has maintained its reputation as a standout destination for unique cycling experiences, with a variety of eye-catching trails that give cyclists a chance to enjoy Limburg's diverse terrain like never before.
The first project to catch the world's attention was Cycling through Water (left). Completed in 2016 inside the De Wijers nature reserve, the more than 200-metre-long path cuts neatly through the centre of a large pond, allowing cyclists to glide across with the park's wildlife at eye-level. It has become one of the region's most popular attractions, even featuring in TIME Magazine’sWorld’s Greatest Places list
in 2018. Its success has enabled Bokrijk park to move forward with a new woodland and landscape management initiative, which has done wonders for the area's flora and fauna. By opening the dikes, the ponds now stay cleaner for longer, improving the local amphibians' habitat and the park’s overall ecosystem.
After parting the waters, Limburg's next trick was to get cyclists off the ground. Located in Bosland, one of the largest areas of uninterrupted forest in Flanders, Cycling through the Trees leads visitors onto a 700-metre circuit suspended ten-metres high by weathered steel pillars that blend into the environment.
With a route built through the treetops, nurturing the forest in which it stands became a priority. The woods were used throughout the last century to produce materials for the mining industry. Today, efforts have been made to restore the woodland to its previous glory, with a new raft of indigenous trees planted across the area.
When you're done racking up the miles amid Limburg's great outdoors, there are plenty of spots to rest weary limbs. Picnic areas and cafes are dotted throughout the region and there's no shortage of welcoming accommodation options for cyclists.
The natural landscape of Belgium is tempting enough for visitors, but Limburg has gone that extra mile to create a two-wheeler's vision of heaven.visitlimburg.be/en

90%The probability of catching a cold or flu from a person within three feet
of you
“The food category I always recommend is fibre. Luckily in winter we have tonnes of different root vegetables – kohlrabi (a cabbage-like bulbous veg that’s great in soups, stir-fries and coleslaws), plus celeriac, parsnips and carrots – which all contain many different types of fibre, particularly if we eat them with the skins on. However, it’s the variety of fibre that’s key here, because it nurtures our microbiota, the population of microbes that live largely in our gut, which is absolutely essential for immune health. In addition to that, winter spices like nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, all-spice, star anise and turmeric are fantastic in teas, broths and sprinkled on roasted veg because they are nutrient-dense. They’re also warming, so they can help stave off colds and sore throats. Though, if you are sick, sleep and rest is always the best way to fight these conditions.”
HOW TO EAT FOR ENERGY Dr Rupy Aujla, NHS doctor and author of Doctor’s Kitchen: Eat to Beat Illness
HOW TO SWERVE BUGSDr Jenna Macciochi, lecturer in immunology at the University of Sussex
“Your probability of catching a cold or flu from an infected person is only about 3% – unless that person is within three feet of you, such as on a bus or at the next desk. Then your chances increase dramatically to as high as 90%. But viruses only infect us if they can break into our body. The best defence is to wash your hands thoroughly (tip: soap is fine, but hand sanitiser won’t work against these viruses), and avoid touching your face, as viruses can enter simply by rubbing our eyes. Finally, wear a scarf – it warms the air in your nasal cavity, generating conditions that make it difficult for the virus to infect.”

“The easiest way to feel happy in winter is to embrace it; light
candles, snuggle under blankets”
HOW TO STAY FLEXIBLENahid de Belgeonne, founder of The Human Method
HOW TO VITAMIN-LOAD YOUR DIETLily Soutter, registered nutritionist
“Vitamin D is the key nutrient for winter. Research shows that its deficiency is associated with a reduced immune response to infection. However, the amount of sunlight reaching our skin plummets in the winter, which is why Public Health England now advises everyone aged four years and above to supplement with 10mcg of vitamin D a day. Vitamin C can also help the immune system. It’s often mistaken that oranges are our top source, but red bell peppers, broccoli and Brussel sprouts all provide more vitamin C per 100g. Finally, zinc lozenges taken within 24 hours of cold symptoms can reduce the severity of the effects. Though always consult your GP before taking supplements.”
HOW TO STAY CHEERFULJo Howarth, founder of The Happiness Club
“The easiest way to feel happy in winter is to embrace it. Light candles, snuggle under blankets and watch a favourite film – the cold outside makes the whole thing even cosier. Social interaction is so important in winter, but you don’t need to venture outside: set up a Skype call with family or FaceTime friends. Then make your time trapped indoors more productive. We all have one drawer that’s overflowing; decluttering is a real wellbeing booster as it brings a great sense of achievement and it will clear your mind.”
“We move less in winter as we spend most of our time indoors, so it’s important to stay mobile. Sit comfortably cross-legged on a cushion, hips higher than your knees so your hip flexors can open, and imagine a rope is pulling you upright towards the sky. Now, pretend you have a plate balancing on your head with a marble on it. Slowly roll the marble around in a small circle, then gradually make the circle bigger and bigger – try to keep your nose facing forwards. Bring the marble back to the middle and slowly change direction. When we look at screens, we keep our eyes in a fixed position, which can lead to headaches and backaches. This movement gets blood to muscles and connective tissue at the back of head – a helpful way to relieve ‘tech neck’.”
