Dear Lucas House Parents

Hilton College 3/25/2015 Term 1

THE LUCAS VIEW

Ps 90:12 Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

I love this verse. In the hustle and bustle of the present day, what greater need is there than to have an

understanding and an awareness of the gift of each day.

Busyness and pressure are not the enemy really, but rather our inability to treasure each moment in the midst of

the chaos or, at least, to take the time to reflect on the incredible blessings we so often take for granted. This

first term has indeed been a frenetic one but a fantastic one too - each day jam packed with activity (and stress)

but in Lucas House we have had so many moments to savour. Here are just a few of them, each one a reminder

to number our days aright.

WINS THE COVETED YOUTH DAY TROPHY. OUR YOUTH DAY CELEBRATION INVOLVES A MULTI DISCIPLINE INTER

HOUSE COMPETITION, WHICH INCLUDES ACADEMIC, SPORT AND CULTURAL ACTIVITIES. AT THE END OF THE

DAY LUCAS HOUSE EMERGED AS THE WINNERS A FANTASTIC HOUSE EFFORT!

NEW BOYS’ DAY AND NEW BOYS’ ACTIVITIES

The first term is such an exciting time for all our new families. From the first day that the new boys are dropped off here

we have numerous activities to integrate our ‘little’ brothers into their home form home. We have a wonderful group of

boys that have joined us in Grade 8, including 4 brothers of more senior Lucas boys.

ACADEMICS MARK ORDER 1

There have been some outstanding results achieved in our academics and I am pleased that our average percentage, as an

entire House, ranks us as one of the top Houses in the school. Many of our top academics have also done exceedingly well

this term but, most pleasing, has been the number of boys who have improved their position in their grade. The number of

our commendations awards achieved is also at their highest level in comparison to previous first term results, however, I

believe, this is an area in which we can still improve.

SPORT

It was wonderful to see so many Lucas boys representing Hilton teams during the brief, but intense, summer season. We

had a number of boys who represented the school at the highest level in their respective age groups. Similarly, with the

advent of the winter season, I have seen such pride and passion displayed by our boys when playing for their school and I

am looking forward to seeing them in action throughout the second term.

Matric Dance

The matric dance was a wonderful celebration. In Lucas we went all out for our pre-dance function. Glenda did an

amazing job to transform our common room to a ‘Night with the Stars’. In the end all the boys and their dates had a

Inter House Sport

The aquatic sports, swimming and water-polo, held their Inter-House events this term. Lucas House fared well in both of

these competitions. In the water polo event our senor team came 3rd and our junior team were victorious in the final beating

4 – 3 Churchill in a thrilling match.

Our Inter-House swimming team finished in 4th place. We were very proud of our swimmers and in particular our two age

group champions, Olav Aadnesgaard (U15 Champion) and Charlie Thornton-Dibb (Victor Ludorum).

Lucas House has a number of boys who are very involved in cultural activities ranging from the choir to the marimba

band, as well as in dramatic productions. Recently, we had a number of boys who took part in the school play, the

Royal Hunt for the Sun, whilst Jonathan Conlan, also took an immense amount of his time to take a lead role in the

Epworth play, The Boyfreind. I was delighted that these involvements included boys in major roles as well as in minor

roles and in the backstage crew. These diverse roles, which include service, are a sure sign that our boys are involved

for all the right reasons and I am proud of them.

Royal Hunt Cast: Tristan Kolver, Mmangaliso Nzuza, Thomas De Beer, Wium Smit, Alex Jeon, Seati Nareetsile and

Tristan and Mmangaliso in Royal Hunt for the Sun

For the past 6 years Lucas House has been actively involved in developing relationships with nearby NGO’s in a

bid to do our part to help those less fortunate than ourselves. We have done some amazing work and have been

able to make a real difference in the nearby communities around us. It must be said, however, that our boys and

staff have been the main beneficiaries in these interactions in that we have learnt so many valuable lessons, directly

and indirectly, from doing these outreach activities. Kindness, compassion, gratefulness and responsibility are just

some of the lessons that we have learnt from doing work with the staff and orphans at Ethembeni, SOS and

Ndabezinhle. This year we will be visiting these organizations on 26 April and 10 May to help repair and restore

their facilities and to play with the children.

As we are ‘self-supported’ (transport, equipment, donations etc.) in this project, none of our previous work would

have been possible without the help from our parent body who have been so generous in supporting our Lucas:

Making a Difference Campaign. Your continued support would be most appreciated.

If parents are able to assist us with a monetary donation and/or by

donating old clothes, sports equipment, blankets etc. we would be

most grateful.

Funds should be deposited into our charity account:

Scottish Highland Royalty was the theme of the matric dance for 2015. The Memorial hall was expertly decked-out

and, right on cue the Hilton mist rolled in to make it that much more authentic. The boys and girls looked stunning

in their suits and dresses and we had a wonderful time at our Pre-Drinks event which preceeded the dance. An

awesome occasion and awesome memories made.

Leaves and Hilton vs. Michaelhouse In the second quarter boys are given an option of a ‘free’ leave on the Hilton vs. Michaelhouse weekend (2-3 May). Whilst this leave is over and above the normal allocation of leaves, it may not be used on an alternate weekend (other than 2-3 May). It is not compulsory for boys to be out on this weekend, however, as most boys will take leave, we encourage boys and parents to make use of this leave so that no boy is alone in the House over this weekend.

God Bless

WELCOME and FAREWELL

It has been wonderful for us to welcome Oliver Randall into our

Lucas House family. Mom and Dad or SO proud of their little boy

and he seems to be doing exceptionally well. I would like to thank all

of the parents who were so generous in donating funds towards our

gift. Some of the money went towards getting them a photo shoot –

captured memories for a lifetime – and they have also been able to get

many necessities. THANK YOU Lucas House!

Mr. Dave White, an exceptional school master who served Hilton

College for around 33 years, left our school at the end of term 1. We

were fortunate to have him as a tutor in our House in his final term at

our school. At our final House Prayers meeting last term he

addressed the House and his message was uplifting and honouring; a

great compliment to us from a man of his stature. We wish him all the

very best on his early retirement and on his new venture – farming in

the Eastern Cape. We look forward to welcoming Mr. Lionel Julius

(Bishops) who will be replacing Dave as a tutor in our House.
