In the fall of 1985, the 200 lifeguards who work for the city of New Orleans at the public pools gathered for a celebration. The summer

of 1985 was the first summer ever that no one had drowned in one of the city pools!

The celebratory party took place at the largest of the city’s pools.

Ironically, as the celebration was going on, 31 year-old Jerome Moody drowned in that very

pool. Moody was not a lifeguard, but was a guest of one. He was

fully dressed when his body was discovered in the pool. No one knows

how he got in the pool, but an autopsy later confirmed that he had, indeed, drowned.

We gather every Sunday to celebrate all that God is doing in our lives. We celebrate

salvation, eternal life, the wonder of grace, and the joy of Christ’s presence. But we

need to remember that each time we gather, there are people with

us who are hurting and crying out for help –

DROWNING!It doesn’t matter how

qualified a lifeguard is if he doesn’t see

the victim.

In His Grace,

Dr. Bob

When I was a young pastor, an older pastor, who was my mentor, told me that every person in Church is hurting in some way. I found it hard to believe. Certainly, somebody is completely happy! But, the longerI serve, the more I realize that my mentor was right. When we gather together for worship, we need to acknowledge our pain, and reach out to the one who is our true lifesaver, Jesus Christ. And we need to reach out to each other. It is when we share both our joys and concerns that we become true brothers and sisters in Christ. When we are true family, we lift each other up in the midst of the storms and the dark waters that threaten to drown us.

Please join me each Sunday in God’s true

lifesaving place.

DEAD OR DORMANT?One of the things I have not been accustomed to since I moved to Florida is the lack of seasonal change throughout Anna Maria Island (although there are two seasons here; summer and President’s Day). In North Carolina, leaves stay off of the trees, mowing takes a back seat, and flowers remain virtually unplanted for six months. People who despise the winter weather in my home state long for a touch of green on the brown yards and the new buds on the leaves.

One of the reasons I believe people look forward to spring (besides the thawing out of cold bodies) is that the things that looked dead, are now coming back to LIFE. What is even more wonderful is that nothing was dead to begin with, but stayed in a state of DORMANCY for a while. If a living plant or animal is dead, it cannot be brought back. DORMANT objects however, wait for that certain time to spring (no pun intended) back to LIFE.

As spring begins, I pray we will be reminded that while some are dead in their trespasses spiritually, they are not deceased physically; hence it is not too late for us to share with others the message of the one who brings LIFE and LIFE ABUNDANTLY. May we all be prepared as spring approaches to share the new, abundant, and eternal LIFE that Jesus Christ brings.
