Here is the Lord’s Prayer
rewritten, based on the Lord’s Prayer ser-
mon series I preached from August 26
through November 11, 2018:
Lord, you are our father who al-
ways awaits us with the outstretched arms
into which we can run back anytime; you
are our mother who always protects and
comforts us with empathy and sympathy;
you are our lover who wants to have an
intimate relationship with us at all times; and you are our friend who walks
side by side with us and encourages us all the time. I know you love me. But
I also know you love others as much as you love me.
Lord, give us strength and wisdom to live a transformed life so that
your name can be honored in the world. You are our ruler. But, you are the
ruler as a servant. So, let the kingdom of God begin with us, in other words,
let service begin with us.
Lord, you want us to love you and our neighbor, which is your will.
So, when we want to talk about your will, please help us to check to see
whether or not your will we discern reflects your desire to love.
Continued on next page.
Please join us for worship, communion and special music at this beautiful, family-friendly service celebrating Jesus’ birth.

BUMC…..SHARING GOD’S LOVE
This section is devoted to sharing
examples of our congregation acting on our mis-
sion of “Sharing God’s Love with Coffey County
and the World.” If you want to recognize someone
for sharing God’s love with you or others, please
email the church office at lmasters@ umcburling-
ton.org for its possible inclusion in the newsletter.
The deadline for submitting information is the 20th of each month.
Thank you to Stan Luke, who
shared eagles from his collection for
Veterans Sunday. They were both
beautiful and meaningful.
Thank you to the newly married
couple, Tawny and Kevin Johnson, for
sharing their wedding flowers with the
church family. The arrangements were enjoyed for several weeks as we
celebrated their happiness.
Thank you to Kathi Bahr, who continued a project begun at Octo-
ber’s church clean-up day. The church’s roasters are all now assembled,
numbered, and ready for check-out to those who complete the check-out
paperwork. The check-out procedure is described on a poster in the Garst
Hall storage room near the roasters’ storage shelves.
Thank you to those who donated
money to purchase 100 cans of whipped
topping. The topping completed a Thanks-
giving meal provided by donations from
participating Ministerial Alliance churches.
Pictured at left are Richard Croll, Barb
Merry, and Pastor Daekyung who helped
deliver the 100 Thanksgiving meals to fami-
lies in need in Coffey County.
Thank you to the Footprints youth who filled the dumpster with
huge bags of leaves removed from the front of the church. Their timing
was perfect, just before a snowfall and a funeral service.
Foundation UMC, My sincerest thanks for your donation to the res-
toration and renovation of the historic Plaza Theatre. Coffey County will
benefit from your assistance also. This project would not be possible with-
out your help which is greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Pam Scott
Witness Chair Joyce Hopkins shared these notes:
1. Great appreciation for the LOVELY Prayer Day! It provided a special
time of prayer and time to visit with the Lord. It was an emotional time to
sit and consider other people and places. The decorations were over the
top - beautiful and gorgeous!
2. Thanks to Darla Jones for her message in the last newsletter on
prayer. Beautifully done!
3. Grateful to the Staff Parish committee for hiring Choir Director, Garrett
VanArsdale! Continued on page 11.
Lord, you satisfy our physi-
cal, emotional and spiritual
needs. So, help us also to sup-
port each other materially, emo-
tionally and spiritually not
tomorrow but today.
Lord, you don’t consider us
as debtors but as loving chil-
dren. You have accepted us as
we are. Therefore, help us to
decide to release anyone who
has made us resentful and to
consider them not as the debtors
but as the ones who also need
your grace, mercy, and forgive-
ness like us.
Lord, help us to overcome
evil that continually tempts us
to doubt your love for us and
others.
May your kingdom be pre-
sent among us through our ser-
vice. May we use your power to
love and forgive others. May
we see your glory in each other.
Amen.
Peace,
Pastor Daekyung

I hope this holiday season finds you happy and
healthy!
In honor of this Advent season, the adult Sunday
school, youth, and Children’s Time are studying “All I
Want for Christmas” by James M. Moore. This five-
week Advent study assists in the examination of what we
really desire during the Christmas season by reminding
us of the life-changing gifts we receive during this spe-
cial time. There are five sessions: one for each Sunday
during Advent as well as one intended for Christmas.
Each chapter includes questions for reflection and discussion, a brief
prayer, a focus for the week, and six daily Bible readings for personal de-
votion time. If you would like to join this study, the Adult Sunday school
meets on Sunday mornings at 9:15 am in the church library. Children’s
Time takes place during our 10:30 am service, immediately following
Children’s Message.
The annual BUMC Christmas program will
take place the evening of Sunday December 2 at 6
pm in the sanctuary. The night will feature musical
pieces from the choir, Pastor Kim, and the children
of BUMC, as well as a dramatic skit. Refreshments
from the Christian Education committee will be
served following the performance in Garst Hall.
The Drama Workshop after school Program will present a Share
Day on Thursday, December 13 at 4:15 pm in Garst Hall! On the special
day, the students showcase all of the applicable skills they have acquired
through drama and the fine arts. I hope you will consider joining us for
this special culmination.
May the love and peace of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, bless
you and keep you this holiday season!
In His love,

DECEMBER FOOTNOTES
by Directors Richard and Susan Croll
Greetings from your Footprints!
Your feet have been getting around lately. Apparently
when you place an ad in the newsletter, people act! Here is a run-
down of the things your Footies have been doing over the last few
weeks: moving furniture from one home to another, windows and
ceiling fan cleaning, taking a trailer load of items to the dump and
raking/bagging close to 100 bags of leaves! Not sure if we'll have
many more chances to do leaves for people, but who knows, the
possibility may arise in the near future!
On top of working for people, the group also attended BHS’s play Little Shop of Horrors and then took
a road trip to Wendy's for some group bonding time. We have found that each and every one of these kids is a
joy to interact with, so you should ask them a question or two the next time you get one cornered!
We've had several meaningful lessons this past month. Since it was close to Thanksgiving, we looked
at the opposite of being thankful and talked about complaining and how it keeps us from focusing on all the
blessings God pours out on us. Earlier in the month we talked about giving and how it relates to mission work
(which can be done locally for people!). The more we give through Christ, the more He gives us back. The
gifts in return aren't always given right away, but they do come back to those who are patient...God is good, all
the time and all the time, God is good!
An update on our trip, it's changed already. In digging more deeply into
things, the Alaska trip, while close to our hearts and where we really wanted to go,
didn't fit what we thought the kids should have in an international type mission trip.
While it did check the box for construction type work and helping make a place better,
it didn't allow for much interaction with local folk. These trips are as much about the fel-
lowship with the locals as it is about the work, so we have moved from Alaska to Puerto Rico (June 22-29,
2019). Puerto Rico is also a little easier on the budget and will feel more like an international trip. While a
little let down about the chance to help out in Alaska, the kids are excited to see what Puerto Rico has in store
for us!
Each month is something new for our Footprints, so I'm sure December
will not disappoint us. We will celebrate our annual Christmas party at 5:30 on
December 9th with a beach theme. They will each bring a finger food and a $7 gift
to exchange.
Should you ever feel the need to cook for the group, or hire a few kids to
shovel snow or rake leaves, give either Susan or Richard a call and we'll work something out! Thank you all
for your continued and unending support of the BUMC youth group.
God Bless!

Cancelling church for wintry weather is not
an easy decision. When questionable weather pre-
sents itself, the Council Chair, Staff-Parish Rela-
tions Chair, and Pastor or Trustees Chair consult.
Two of the three are needed to agree on the plan
for the situation. When it is decided that calling off
church is the best plan for people’s safety, here is
how you will learn about it:
1) WIBW will be notified of the cancella-
tion so that the church family can find the informa-
tion on television.
2) The cancellation will also be posted on
the church’s Facebook page: Burlington UMC. If
you are a Facebook user, please “like” the church’s page so that this informa-
tion will be readily available to you.
3) When possible, emails will be sent with the closure notification.
4) The most effective communication will come from the congregation
itself. Once you learn of a closure, please call those you share a pew with to
share information and ensure everyone’s safety in inclement weather.
5) If you do not have access to WIBW or Facebook and would like
someone assigned to call you in the event of a Sunday closure, please notify
the church office.
Obviously, each individual has the decision of whether it feels safe for
them to attend church in wintry weather. For those unable to attend for any
reason, the manuscript of each week’s sermon is posted on the church website:
umcburlington.org. A recording of the message is also posted on the website.
Many thanks to Luella
Masters & Dawn Freeman
for helping with the logis-
tics & decorating, to Rich-
ard Croll for help with the
sound system and Donna
Jacupke for providing the
delicious breads & snacks.
For those of you who
helped greet and came to be
in intentional prayer time, I
am truly grateful. If you
were unable to come I hope
we can bring you in next
time to experience the glory
of a dedicated prayer day!
In Christ,
Darla Jones

BUMC BANNER AVAILABLE
BUMC has a 3 X 5 vinyl banner available for
groups to use whenever they would like to share
BUMC’s name and logo. This banner was purchased
with memorial funds in honor of Jim Hughes. It was
first used to identify our “delegation” at November’s
annual charge conference at Lawrence First UMC.
Contact the church office and plan to use the banner at your next ser-
vice project, event outside the church, etc.
BLANKETS COLLECTED IN NARTHEX Men’s Breakfast
All men are invited to
enjoy breakfast and fellow-
ship the first Friday of each
month at the hospital cafete-
ria. Mark your calendar for
7 am Friday, Dec. 7.
Blankets are needed this season by many
households in Coffey County. God’s Storehouse has
asked churches to collect unused or new blankets.
These can be put under the Giving Tree in the narthex
to be distributed to those in need.
Share the warmth!

Hello all, On Saturday, November 17, Pastor Kim, Jinhee Han, Larry Hauth and I attended the Town
Hall meeting presented by Great Plains Bishop Saenz. It was the eighteenth and last presentation and was held
at Lawrence First UMC. The purpose of the meeting was to present an overview of the three proposals that
will be voted on in February, 2019 and respond to any questions.
Recall the three proposals have been inserts to our Sunday bulletins and in the newsletter. They are:
One Church Plan, Connectional Conference Plan, and Traditional Plan. For a full briefing on The Way For-
ward Report, go to: https://www.greatplainsumc.org/wayforwardreport.
We began the gathering with a short worship service with Communion.
Bishop Saenz then shared a power point presentation that began with the overview of the United Methodist
Church. Here are some highlights:
Great Plains Conference has ~1007 congregations; ~210,000 members; ~78,000 attend worship each
Sunday! ~8,500 small groups; Total Revenue of $203 Billion dollars; Mission Shares represent ~90%
Worldwide UMC numbers: ~ 7.7 Million in United States; ~ 33 Thousand in Germany; ~ 1.6 Million in
West Africa; ~ 374 Thousand in Central Africa; ~ 1.09 Million in Congo; ~ 15 Thousand in Eurasia and
Northern Europe; ~ 201 Thousand in the Philippines
We reviewed UMC Conference hierarchy:
Church Charge Conference is once per year.
Annual Conference is once per year i.e. Great Plains Annual Conference (all of Nebraska and Kansas
are included in the Great Plains Conference)
General UMC Conference is held once every FOUR years (last one in 2016, upcoming in 2020)
Other interesting vitae for General Conference in 2020: Total of 864 delegates. Per the Book of Dis-
cipline, ONLY delegates can vote on legislation at General Conference. Our Five Rivers District dele-
gates are representatives (clergy) Rev. David Livingston and (laity) Mr. Oliver Green. The Great Plains
Conference has 12 delegates (6 clergy and 6 laity). There are alternates, too.
Worldwide there are 66 Bishops – 46 in the United States and 20 outside the United States. Per the Book
of Discipline, Bishops do not vote on legislation.
CONTEXT: An outcome of the 2016 General Conference was the request that the Council of Bishops to
lead – A Way Forward – regarding the LGBTQ question(s) facing the global United Methodist Denomination.
A group of folks – 32 people representing nine nations, traditionalists, progressives – met nine times over 2016
through 2018. Two plans (One Church and Connectional Church) were developed. The Traditional Plan was
added at the end.
In May 2017, the Bishops voted to support the One Church Plan. The Judicial Council met to deter-
mine the constitutionality of each plan. Each plan had problem areas and those areas will be addressed. If you
have the kept the Overview of Proposals for General Conference (it’s been in the church bulletin and newslet-
ter), please use it to follow along. Additional copies are available in the church office. Not every area was
discussed in detail.
One Church Plan summary: preferred by majority of Bishops. Removes restrictive language in the Book of
Discipline prohibiting same gender weddings in UMC property and ordination of self-avowed, practicing
homosexuals. It adds language to protect churches and pastors who choose NOT to allow same gender
marriages. Local churches would have to review marriage policies. Local churches would covenant with
Bishop on whether congregation would accept an LGBTQ pastor.
Connectional Church Plan summary: Plan replaces the current Jurisdictional conferences with three con-
nectional conferences based on affinity – Progressive, Traditional, and Unity. All three options require use
of a General Book of Discipline (Articles of Religion, General Rules, Confessions of Faith) with the ability
to adapt other portions to their context for ministry. Local churches must choose: Progressive, Tradition, or
Unity. Wedding policy changes would occur. Continued on next page.

Traditional Plan summary: Broadens the definition of “self-avowed, practicing homosexual”; puts penalties
in place for disobedience to the Book of Discipline, and requires bishops, pastors and annual conference to
certify adherence to the Book of Discipline.
Bishop Saenz presentation explained: One Church Plan is like two trees growing side by side with
interwoven branches. Connectional Church Plan is like three separate trees growing side by side but not
necessarily with interwoven branches. And the Traditional Plan (one that needs the most work) is one tree.
I’m going to stop here. If you haven’t read through the Overview of Proposals for General Conference,
please do so. This is serious. Please pray for our Methodist Church – our delegates – for collective wisdom and
spiritual maturity.
Instead of being afraid of our future as United Methodists, let us be like Mary at the tomb on Resurrec-
tion Day – when Jesus Christ called her name, Mary, she turned to Him with JOY! Let us turn to Him with
joy – not anxiety, fear, or trepidation.
Call me. I will talk to you about this. Let’s have coffee or something. Remember – God is good…all
the time. He has a plan, too!

TOWN HALL MEETING, from Previous Page
BOOKS ORDERED, STUDY GROUP FORMING
TO FOCUS ON METHODIST CHURCH ISSUES Two books were recommended at the Bishop’s Town Hall Meeting: Living Faithfully: Human Sexual-
ity and the United Methodist Church by David Barnhart, and United Methodists Divided: Understanding Our
Differences Over Human Sexuality by Dale McConkey. Both publications are currently in the church office.
Living Faithfully is a four-week study. Larry Hauth will lead a study of this book. If you are interested,
please contact Larry, Pastor Daekyung, or the church office. A time that works for participants will be
determined.
Finance Reports Shared These expense and income summaries for
January through October were produced by Treasurer
Becky Richwine and reviewed at the November Coun-
cil meeting. BUMC monthly financial reports are al-
ways available in the church office and shared at
monthly Council meetings which are open to the
BUMC family.
Special Offerings The Christmas Eve offering will benefit Coffey
Co. Resource Council which offers financial aid to
county residents. BUMC refers people in need to
CCRC throughout the year.
The special United Methodist Student Day of-
fering of $482.61 was collected November 25. This
will benefit scholarships for United Methodist stu-
dents’ higher education. The next special offering will
be on January 20, Human Relations Sunday.

The November 18, 2018 Council meeting was called to order by Chairperson Bob Culbertson at 11.40
AM. Bob lead the group in prayer. Members present included Bob Culbertson, Susan Croll, Joyce Hopkins,
David Douglass, Jane Hartley, Rita Beard, Becky Richwine, Pastor Kim, Hope Peckham, Richard Croll and
Judy Stukey.
Becky gave a financial report and showed a graph of income verses expenditures from January 1
through October 31, 2018. She is having Luella print this graph in the newsletter.
Committee Reports: Witness- Joyce Hopkins reported the Christmas program would be December 2
at 6 PM. There will be a Christmas eve service at 6 PM. We will meet following the 10:30 service on Novem-
ber 25 to decorate the church for Christmas. Light snacks and lunch will be available.
Trustees- Judy Stukey reported the plumbing problems of last week had been repaired and should be
functioning in future. It was noted we need to place Rid-X in the basement toilets once a month to keep the
inside sewer lift station clean and functioning. She has made an agreement with Tom and Jeremy Hugunin to
do snow removal of the parking areas whenever we have over two inches of snow or other times we feel we
need it. The lights behind the cross above the altar are not working properly. We have decided to convert the
fixtures to LED lights. The electrician has ordered the necessary parts to complete this project.
Outreach- Rita Beard reported that Meals on Wheels need more volunteers. The BUMC is participat-
ing in the Salvation Army Bell Ringing on December 1 at Hoovers Thriftway and is asking for volunteers. We
still need six more people to do this.
Christian Ed- No committee members was present. The Dec 2 Christmas program was again men-
tioned and the church will go caroling on Dec 16 following the 10:30 service.
Ignite -Hope Peckham continues to work to get more small groups and asked all members to pray for
the church and ways to serve the Lord. We already do many things for the community and world and are ask-
ing the committees to share a “Spark Snapshot” during the services to let the congregation know what activi-
ties we are doing.
Pastor Kim reported on the annual conference and stressed our three goals that we have had this year
and are continuing them for next year. They are: Growing Young Families; Enhance Communication; and
Outreach. He wants to focus on small group especially for the younger people and also enhance Children’s
Church.
Youth- Richard announced they are planning a Christmas party but no exact date has been set. He also
informed the council that the youth mission trip will be to Puerto Rico rather than Alaska. It was felt the youth
would have more direct contact with the people they are helping in Puerto Rico. In Alaska they were going to
work on repairs at a camp but no local people were to be present. They felt a more face to face experience
would be a better learning experience for the youth.
Bob gave a brief report on the annual conference held last week in Lawrence.
Jane Hartley gave a report on the Five Rivers District Town Hall meeting on November 17 that she, Pastor
Kim and Larry Hauth attended. There are 1007 congregations with 210,000 members with 78,000 regularly
attending church in the Nebraska-Kansas Conference. The net worth of these congregations is approximately
$203 billion. There are many more Methodists worldwide. We are all part of the world wide church. Jane
gave an indepth report of the changes that are being proposed and will be voted on by delegates in February
2019. There will be twelve delegates from the Nebraska-Kansas conference. She advised everyone to go to
the web at [email protected] to learn the three proposals being brought before the dele-
gates. For more information on this, please talk with Jane Hartley. She will be glad to talk to anyone, indi-
vidually or small groups, in regard to this matter.
Susan Croll informed the group that it is time to work on a new church directory. The dates for pic-
tures have been set for March 21, 22 and 23, 2019. Following discussion Susan moved to proceed with the
directory. Jane Hartley seconded and the motion carried.

Cards and addresses are available in the narthex. Complete a card, address the envelope, and leave
it in the basket to be mailed to BUMC friends and family.
Our Giving Tree is in the narthex to receive less-frequently donated items like new socks, new
undies, hats and gloves, and child-sizes 6, 8 and 10 gender-neutral sweat pants. Items will be shared
with the elementary school’s clothes closet, God’s Storehouse, and shelters.
Bring baked goodies, candy or fruit on Sunday, Dec. 16 for Christmas plates for homebound
friends. Please consider delivering some of the plates at your convenience, EARLY that week while
the goodies are fresh. Register for specific deliveries on the church office window sign-up sheet.
Join the fun! Items will be ready for delivery Monday morning, Dec. 17.
Caravan to Carol at The Life Care Center and The Meadows following 10:30 service on Dec. 16.
Words to the carols will be provided. Professional voices are NOT required. Come join the caroling
fun to share God’s love with those who can’t get out to enjoy the season’s festivities.
The Christmas Adopt-a-Family program, administered through ECKAN, is underway, thanks to
BUMC family members’ generosity. If you are interested in “adopting” a large family or an individ-
ual, please contact the church office. If you wish to contribute money for the purchase of these
gifts, please make checks payable to BUMC and specify the Adopt-a-Family program for your con
tribution. Cash donations should be made by Wednesday, Dec. 5.
BUMC is Sharing God’s Love with Coffey County and the World. How will you choose to “Give
Christmas Away”?! Prepare your hearts for Christmas and give His love away! Please join us for this annual,
meaningful Advent project.
Council, Pg. 10 Bob asked the group to
designate where the funds
from the Christmas Eve ser-
vice will be given. Rita Beard
made a motion to give the
funds to the Coffey County
Resource Council as we have
done in the past. Becky Rich-
wine seconded the motion and
it carried.
There will not be a Coun-
cil meeting in December
unless something comes up
that needs to be addressed.
The next meeting date is
when we are going caroling.
Pastor Kim closed the meet-
ing with prayer.

Amy (Thomsen) and Tyler Osner were honored in
a Shower of Blessings hosted by the Nurture Committee
following 10:30 service November 18.
Amy and Tyler were married this summer by Pas-
tor Daekyung in Emporia. An embroidered blessing blan-
ket was passed through the congregation who prayed over
it and tied the fringes.
The blanket was gifted to the couple at the recep-
tion as everyone enjoyed decorated sheet cake and drinks.

Thank you to Raymon Kaufman who crafted the crosses and flames
which were given to family members of those honored at All Saints Day. His
talent and time is greatly appreciated, and the gifts are wonderful mementos
of the special service at BUMC.
Dear Son-Shine Express, The food and devotional book are deeply
appreciated. Your prayers are being answered. I appreciate everyone’s love
and concern. –Rita Beard.
