VALUE KEEPERS OF THE BIBLE: Week 09 page 3

A long time ago ... there were ten men who had leprosy. These ten men were outside a villagebetween Samaria and Galilee. One day Jesus was traveling on his way toJerusalem and walked past the place were these men stood. They called tohim from a distance, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!” When Jesus turnedto see the men, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests” and at oncethey were cleansed. One of the ten men, a Samaritan, stopped when he sayhe was healed. He came back to throw himself at Jesus’ feet praising Godin a loud voice. Jesus said to him, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where arethe other nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God exceptthis foreigner?” (vs. 18) Then Jesus said to the man, “Rise and go; your faithhas made you well.”

What we can learn from the story In this story we can see the value Jesus put on the leper expressing histhankfulness of what Jesus had done for him. He is the only one that Jesusspoke to recognizing the man’s faith and the assurance that he is healed.Through this story, we learn the importance of saying “Thank You” for allGod does for us as well as for what others do for us.

WHAT IS THANKFUL?To show you are grateful.

To be THANKFUL means to show you are grateful in both your words andyour actions. It means showing you are glad not only for what others havedone for you, but what God has done for you! An act of THANKSGIVINGoften refers to an act of gratitude, especially to God.

HOW DID THE ONE LEPER SHOW HE WAS THANKFUL IN OUR STORY

TODAY?He came back to Jesus, throwing himself at his feet in humble gratitude, praising God loudly.

CAN YOU THINK OF OTHERS IN THE BIBLE WHO SHOWED THEY WERE

THANKFUL?Noah, Abraham and Sarah, Joseph’s father and his brothers, Zachariahand Elizabeth, the shepherds, the wise men, Paul, etc..

WHAT ARE SOME WAYS YOU CAN SAY THANKS TO GOD?Say a prayer of THANKSGIVING, sing praises, worship him. We can alsotell others what God has done for us or give of our resources to His churchor to charities to show our appreciations.

WHAT ARE SOME WAYS YOU CAN SAY THANKS TO OTHERS?Some ways to show you are THANKFUL are: give a gift, call someone onthe phone, send a Thank-You note, say “Thank You” and tell someone elseabout the thoughtful thing the person did for you.

WHY SHOULD WE SAY THANKS?It shows we appreciate what God and others have done for us. It remindsus of what God and others do and how blessed we are.

VALUE KEEPERS OF THE BIBLE: Week 10 page 3

A long time ago ... Hannah dedicated her first son, Samuel, to God and he went to live with Eli,the high priest. One night when Samuel was about twelve years old, hethought he heard Eli call for him. Samuel quickly got up going to Eli and said,“Here I am, you called me.” Eli replied, “I did not call; go back and lie down.”So Samuel went and lay down. Again Samuel thought he heard Eli call and, again, he went to him. But Eli had not called him. The third time this hap-pened, Eli realized it was God who was calling Samuel. He told Samuel if heheard his name being called again, he was to say, “Speak, Lord, for yourservant is listening.” (1 Samuel 3:9) God did call Samuel again. He listenedto the message God had for him which foretold of the death of Eli and histwo sons and the times of trouble that were going to fall in the nation ofIsrael.

After this event, Israel did fall on hard times. They were still at war with thePhilistines who eventually killed Eli’s two sons in battle and stole the Ark ofthe Covenant. The Ark was later returned to Israel when the Lord causedgreat disease and death to those who stole it. Samuel became the newpriest at Shiloh and was well respected by the people. He was appointed ajudge by God and was a prophet. Later when the people insisted upon hav-ing a king, God told Samuel the people were not rejecting him, but they wererejecting God. He told Samuel to anoint Saul as the first king of Israel. AfterSaul turned his back on God, He told Samuel to anoint David as the secondking of Israel.

What we can learn from the story Just as Samuel was called to do special work for God, each of us who arechildren of God are also called to a special purpose. We need to be just asattentive and obedient as Samuel was and say, “Here I am, Lord.”

WHAT IS ATTENTIVE?To listen to someone in a way that shows you care.

ATTENTIVE means “to pay attention.” When someone is ATTENTIVE, itmeans they are being considerate and courteous to the person talking.Generally they are looking at the person and are making a conscious effortto think about what the person is saying.

HOW DID SAMUEL SHOW HE WAS ATTENTIVE IN OUR STORY TODAY?Samuel paid attention to Eli when he thought the priest was calling him. He was also attentive to God when he realized it was God calling him. He wasattentive to God’s message and relayed it clearly to Eli.

WHAT ARE SOME WAYS YOU CAN BE ATTENTIVE TO GOD?Ways to show you are ATTENTIVE to God are to read your Bible daily, goto church and learn about Jesus, pray and ask Jesus to help you learnmore about him, and talk to responsible adults about Jesus and how youcan be more like him.

WHAT ARE SOME WAYS YOU CAN SHOW YOU ARE ATTENTIVE TO OTH-ERS?Ways to show ATTENTIVE are to look at the person speaking, think aboutwhat he is saying and, if necessary, repeat it back to the person.

WHAT CAN YOU DO WHEN OTHERS DO NOT SEEM TO BE ATTENTIVETO YOU?Tell them they seem to have something else on their mind and is there abetter time to talk with them.

Lord, help me to show myclass one of the greatest gifts they can give this special week as wellas the whole season, is the gift of help. Their Mom will need help while preparing Thanksgiving dinner and to prepare their home forvisitors. Dad will need help as he makes last minute repairs to thehome. And their teacher will need help as kids exhibit restlessnessas they await their vacation. Help me to show my class that being helpful needs to extend over the whole year. OBJECT LESSON

Objects: broom, bandaid, book, and baking sheetGood morning! Did all of you have a good week this week? What are someof the things you did? (Get their responses.) Today I want to show you fouritems and I want you to tell me what they have in common. (Get ideas fromthe students like: they all begin with the letter “B”, you can hold them, youfind them around the house, etc..) All of those things you said are true. Butthe one thing I am thinking of is that they all are things you can use to helpsomeone else. How can you use a broom to help someone? (sweep thehouse, sweep up sawdust when your dad is working on a project, use it aspart of a prop to tell a story or as part of a costume) How can you use abandaid? (to help someone who has hurt themselves, to keep a woundclean and infection away) How can you use a book? (To read a story to alittle brother and sister, to learn how to do something better, or to gainunderstanding about God and His world.) And how can you use a bakingsheet? (To make something good to eat for your family to eat, to bakesomething for a sick neighbor, or to make a gift for a friend.)

Today we will be looking at the value “HELPFULNESS”. What do you thinkis the most important thing to remember when you help someone? Themost important thing is to help someone with a positive attitude. You mustbe willing to do something for someone else with a heart full of love andcompassion. Today we will learn more about HELPING and how to do sowillingly. We will also examine the early life of a special young lady in theBible who did the extraordinary to help her little brother.

VALUE KEEPERS OF THE BIBLE: Week 11 page 3

A long time ago ... there was a mean Pharaoh who ruled in Egypt. Years after Joseph movedhis family to Egypt, Joseph and his brothers died. Israel’s family, calledIsraelites, had grown quite large and they filled the land. A new king, whodid not know Joseph, came to rule Egypt. He saw there were a great num-ber of Israelites and feared they would side with his enemies if a war brokeout so he had them made slaves. Well, the more he worked them, the morethey multiplied which made the king even more fearful. He ordered the mid-wives to kill all boys born to the Israelites, but they feared God and did notdo what they were told. The king then ordered that every Hebrew (Israelite)boy born was to be thrown into the Nile River to drown.

During this time a baby boy was born to a Levite woman. (A descendant ofLevi, one of the sons of Israel.) She hid the baby for three months. But whenshe could hide him no longer, she made a basket of Papyrus coated withtar and pitch, placed the baby in it and put it among the reeds along thebank of the Nile River. She had his older sister, Miriam, watch over him froma distance to see what would happen to him. Pharaoh’s daughter camedown to the river to bathe. She saw the floating basket, opened it and foundthe crying baby. Miriam saw that Pharaoh’s daughter felt sorry for the littlebaby and asked her if she would like her to find a Hebrew woman to nursethe infant. The girl returned with her mother and Pharaoh’s daughterordered her to care for the infant and she would pay for his care. When hewas older, she brought him to the palace and he became her son. Shenamed him Moses and he prospered in her household.

What we can learn from the story Miriam showed she was helpful not only to her brother, but to her mother. She wanted to be there in case her brother was in need and by doing sohelped her mother who could not stay at the edge of the river watching.Miriam also helped by offering adult help when she had the opportunity to.

This story also shows how Pharaoh’s daughter wanted to help. She knewthe law her father had made and she saw a tiny baby in need of help. She,too, sought others to help when the opportunity presented itself.

OBJECT LESSON

Objects: letter writing paperGood morning boys and girls! I am a little behind on my letter writing, so Iam going to take a couple of minutes to finish this last note. (Take out a par -tially finished note and write at least one line on it. Then write and say,“Sincerely” and your name.)

There, I am now finished! Would you like me to read what I wrote? (Readthe note emphasizing the word, “Sincerely.”) Does anyone here know whypeople end letters with the word “Sincerely”? (Get answers from students.)To end a letter, we often put a closing before we sign our name. What aresome closings you use to end your letters? (“Love”, “Yours Truly”, “YourFriend”, and “See you soon” are just a few.) Many letter writers use the word“Sincerely” if they want to add emphasis, truthfulness or a feeling of beinggenuine. For instance, if I was apologizing for hurting someone’s feelings, Imight be use this closing to add emphasis to how badly I feel for hurtingthem.

Today we will read a story about a synagogue ruler, Jairus, and his dyingdaughter. This man showed sincerity when he approached Jesus and askedfor healing for his daughter.

VALUE KEEPERS OF THE BIBLE: Week 12 page 3

A long time ago ... there was a synagogue ruler named Jairus. He had heard about the healingpower of Jesus and when his daughter fell ill he believed Jesus could healher. As his daughter lay dying, he went to the Sea of Galilee to ask Jesus tocome to his home and put His hands on her “so that she will be healed andlive.” (Mark 5:23) Jesus readily agreed and along with the disciples and alarge crowd of people followed Jairus towards his home. Among those whopressed around Jesus was a woman who had suffered from bleeding fortwelve years. She, too, had heard of Jesus’ healing power and made herway through the crowd toward her Savior. As she came up behind him, shetouched the hem of his cloak. Immediately her bleeding stopped and she feltHis healing power move throughout her body. At the same moment Jesusfelt power leave him. He turned and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”(Mark 5:30) The woman came forward, trembling with fear because she felthe was angry with her. Instead Jesus told her to “go in peace” because herfaith had healed her.

Meanwhile Jairus was patiently waiting for Jesus to continue his journey. AsJesus stood talking with the woman, some men came from his home to tellhim his daughter had died. Jesus, overhearing this, told Jairus to not beafraid. He did not let the crowd continue following them. Instead Jesus tookonly Peter, James and John with him. When he arrived at Jairus’ home hefound the people crying and wailing. Jesus questioned them saying, thechild is not dead, but asleep. Disbelieving him, they laughed. Jesus put themout leaving him with the child’s parents, the three disciples and the little girl.He took her by the hand and ordered her to get up. Immediately she stoodup ... alive!

What we can learn from the story When our story opened, Jairus sincerely believed Jesus could heal hisdaughter. He again showed his sincerity when Jesus told him to not beafraid, but to believe when he was told his daughter had died. Can you imag-ine his sincere joy when his daughter stood up from her death bed andwalked around the room showing she was indeed healed? God wants us tohave the same sincere believe in him as he is with us in our daily lives.
