Unique Natural and Cultural Heritage
• The Valdivian Rainforest Ecoregion is one of the 25 most valuable and threatened ecoregions of the planet.
Considered globally, "hotspot” on biodiversity (Myers et al., 2000).
Chucao, only exists here and is
fully adapted to live on the forest
floor.
Pudu, is the world's smallest
deer and is endemic to this
forest.
Güiña, one of the smallest wild
cats in the world.
Monito de monte, is the more primitive marsupial
on earth, considered a living fossil, representative of
the first marsupials that inhabited South America.
Endangered.
• This ecoregion hosts the most extraordinary and representative biodiversity of the planet. Dinerstein et al. (2001)
• The natural isolation for several thousand years, developed unique plant and animal species on the planet.
• It is a globally virgin forest, because it is one of the large, ecologically intact natural forests remaining on Earth.
(Bryant et al., 1997)

Unique Heritage and an underprivileged community

History
• Since the early twentieth century the main economic activity in this sector was the intensive exploitation of native forests.
• In fact the two neighboring towns, Puerto Fuy and Neltume, which derives its name from the Mapudungun means "Go to Freedom" (Neltún: leave free, Men: go there), start as logging camps.
• The decay of this activity from the late twentieth century led to
high unemployment in the area that generated a problematic situation in the sector.

History
Dilemma: ¿ How to conserve this unique place with the local people for the future generations?
• To conserve a place it is necessary to work together with the community, and it should involve an economic activity that also benefits the local people. There may be an economic activity associated to conservation.
• In this sence, a natural economic alternative was tourism, but not any kind of Tourism. Sustainable Tourism is the one that focuses in conserving the local values of this unique place.
• However, the immediate answer of some experts was that the only alternative was to make an urban development subdividing the Pirehueico lake shore, like it has been done in most of southern Chile lakes, and that the forest didn’t have any real value for tourism .
STRATEGY: Development of a Sustainable Tourism Destination through
the conservation and enhancement of Unique Heritage of the Patagonian Rainforest, based in the local community.

Vision and Mission
VISION: Making the Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve an icon of sustainable development worldwide, based on the synergy and balance of its three pillars: conservation of natural and cultural heritage, local community integration and development of sustainable economic activity throughout the time, mainly tourism, generating a World Class Sustainable Tourism Destination.
MISSION: To preserve, highlight and spread the Natural and Cultural Heritage only present in Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve through a magical experience for our visitors, with the objective that the discovered values are transmitted and disseminated (to family and friends) once back in their place of origin and involve a commitment to conserve it. At the same time generating economic activity compatible with the conservation of this heritage, allowing the development of surrounding communities and the real sustainability of this heritage in the long run.

Retraining and multiplier effect, creating ventures. Testimonies:
• Ana Zambrano (Owner of La Cabaña Hostel) "I start with a restaurant which over the years became a hostel. I started with two rooms. Now look what I have!", notes Ana with proud observing her 7 full equipped rooms for tourists.
• Loreto Borel (26 years old, Chief Excursions Huilo Huilo) "... Because of this, the life of many people, including myself, has changed for the better. I never thought to study tourism. My grandfather Ruben was a truck driver in the timber industry and my mother worked as a secretary for a company in the same sector. With the advent of this project, I saw the option to stay here and have a better future. "
• Jacob Salgado (34 years old, Tour Operator) "I worked in a sawmill and then for six years, I was employed by the Huilo Huilo Reserve as a guide until I stated with my own touristic business"

"Why being an integral part of the community is important to Huilo Huilo.“
• From the beginning onwards, the rationale for the project was to achieve the conservation of the Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve along with the community.
• It is important to count on the local people because they know the place, the story, the traditions , they want to live and stay there and they provide and ensure continuity to the project.
• Tourism is an inclusive economic activity, it generates a wide range of other associated activities where many people can work in. It is also inclusive in gender and age terms. In this sence, the original activity (timber cutting) paradigm has changed with Tourism. Before, the main work force were men and young people, taking into account all the collateral effects that it implies. Now all the community is involved.

"Why being an integral part of the community is important to Huilo Huilo.“
• 90% of the current work force at Huilo Huilo Reserve comes from Neltume and Puerto Fuy, the neighboring towns.
• Only for specific positions, external people with skills and knowledge to train and prepare the others are recruited.
• HHBR supports local entrepreneurship by hiring the local outdoor activities providers, promoting the local accommodation alternatives, among others.
• Huilo Huilo Foundation has an important role in the integration of the community through their activities such as: all year long handcraft workshops for local people, educational projects supporting the local schools and organizing different cultural events and festivals through the year were everyone is welcome.
• HHBR believes and supports a sustainable local development in benefit of the current and future generations.
