THE LONDON ORATORY JUNIOR CHOIR wasestablished in 1973 to provide Catholic childrenwith the opportunity to experience choral musicat the highest level and to take part in theliturgies of one of London’s premier Catholicchurches. The choir is open to Catholic boys andgirls aged 8–16 and provides a unique andspecial musical education. The choir is directedby Charles Cole, who is also the Director of theSchola Cantorum of The London Oratory School.

The choristers are trained in music theory and singa wide range of repertoire from the 16th–20thcenturies. They are also taught the majorGregorian chants and learn a large numberof traditional Catholic hymns.

Members of the choir receive free vocaltuition from one of London’s mosthighly regarded singing teachers,Anita Morrison, who also trains thechoristers of the London OratorySchola and Westminster Cathedral.

The Choir’s duties at the Oratory include singingthe 10 o’clock Mass on Sunday mornings,Benediction on Tuesday evenings andrehearsals on Friday evenings. In additionthe Choir sings at other major events duringthe Church year such as the famed ChristmasCarol Service.

The Choir undertakes a number of engagementsoutside the Oratory and, in particular, has a long-standing association with Royal Ballet, providingthe choir for the company’s productions of theNutcracker and The Dream at the Royal OperaHouse.

The choir has featured on BBC Radio 3, the BBCProms and has sung at all London’s major concerthalls. The choir took part in the award-winningrecordings of Bach’s St Matthew Passion andMonteverdi’s Vespers with Sir John Eliot Gardinerand the Monteverdi Choir. In recent years the choirhas undertaken tours to Rome and Venice, singingat St Peter’s Basilica, the Roman Oratory, andSt Mark’s, Venice.
