MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Mayfair 2013 Recaptures the Tale of Treasure Island

If you joined us at Mayfair this year, you know that an event of this magnitude requires nothing short of

months and months of planning and organization. I’m certain everyone agrees - Mayfair 2013 breaks all

The best school events tell a story about a school community. This particular story is all about extraordinary

parents and staff, and Mayfair is the event that showcases their dedication, commitment and vibrant cre-

ativity.

Primary School

All teaching assistants participated in ICT training every month this year. This past month we read an arti-

cle called “Why (Not How) We Should Use iPads In Education”. We discussed the article and then we

“played” with the iPads. It looks like there was lots to learn, create and collaborate!

Message from the Principal

We tried to answer some of these questions and we will continue to investigate iPad use in

the primary school.

What type of ENERGY is

best for Mozambique?

This question and many more

guided the research of the

Grade Four students, as they

inquired into the best ways to

harness and transform energy

to best benefit not only

Mozambique, but planet

earth and the entire human

race.

They found out about renew-

able and non-renewable en-

ergy sources and by the time

they reached the debate,

they were convinced about

their chosen energy source and were ready to argue their points.

Students learnt how to be attackers and rebutters, and how to argue in a respectful and democratic

way. Throughout the debate, students voted for the most convincing arguments. The winner was the

group who advocated a wiser use of biomass (with the possibility of wind power for the future). The stu-

dents are now debating the best way to take action on this, such as encouraging local people to use

more energy-efficient cookers (known as Jikos).

We will keep you posted! ~ Ms Fiona

On Thursday, May 9th, Grade 5 exhibited, in the primary library, the product of 7 weeks of research, investi-

gation and hard work. “Exhibition”, as it has simply become known, can be considered the grande finale

of these children’s primary school education. Seven weeks ago topics were identified that fell within the

trans-disciplinary theme of How We Organise Ourselves. It was an inquiry into the interconnectedness of

human-made systems and communities, the structure and function of organizations, societal decision-

making, economic activities and their impact on humankind and the environment. Students grouped

themselves according to their particular interests and each group took on single area of study. Although

there was some direction and structure provided by teachers, mainly to ensure everyone kept pace with

the workload, and some guidance and support from volunteer mentors, the research was initiated and

data recorded entirely by the students themselves. They were expected to arrange their own field trips,

interviews and guests speakers, synthesize the data they collected and present it in an attractive and co-

hesive way on Exhibition Night. The end result was phenomenal! The students presented their work with

pride and confidence and those in attendance that evening were thoroughly impressed. We can safely

say “mission accomplished, Grade 5!”. Very well done.

Secondary School

IB exams are all but over. Our seniors and many of their parents gathered in the auditorium for a special

farewell on Tuesday May 14th. They were all wearing their smart new graduates’ jackets, each embroi-

dered with their name on the back. We thank Sonia Dawson for preparing a lovely slideshow for the oc-

casion, which featured a picture of each of them as they started their school careers and a picture of

each of them now, as they are about to graduate. We wish them good luck for their remaining exams.

GRATEFUL THANKS TO OUR GENEROUS SPONSORS:

Teens and

The end of the school year is an exciting time for Secondary School Students. Teenagers are excited

to be moving up a grade level and are making plans for summer travel and visits with friends and

family.

The end of the year can also be a time of stress. Final assignments are due, exams may be looming,

and then there are the inevitable goodbyes that come with attending an international school. Alt-

hough there is a certain electricity in the air as the end of school approaches, students often go

through a period of anxiety within the last few weeks of the school year.

Signs that your teen is stressed:

Chronic illness

Anxiety

Chronic fatigue

Withdrawal

Aggression/irritability

Headaches

How you can help your teen:

Encourage them to talk about what they are going through

Offer reassurance, encouragement, and support

Continue to provide structure, stability, and predictability

Encourage them to participate in activities that they normally enjoy

Model effective stress management and coping skills

Ways teens can decrease stress:

Exercise and eat regularly

Avoid excess caffeine intake

Learn relaxation exercises

Decrease negative self-talk

Take a break from stressful situations

Build a network of friends who can help you cope in a positive way

While everyone reacts to stress in different ways, learning positive coping mechanisms at a young

age will offer a lifetime of benefits. As a parent, be open and respectful of what your teen may be

experiencing these last few weeks of school. Even if your teen is reluctant to open up to you being

there to offer support and (often more importantly) food, will go a long way.

Stretch before games and practices

Warming up and stretching before play is very important in helping prevent sports injuries.

Start with about 10 minutes of jogging or light exercise, then stretch all the major muscle groups,

holding each stretch for 20 to 30 seconds.

Remember to hydrate

Make sure fluids are drunk (water is the best) 30 minutes before sport begins and every 15 – 20

minutes during the activity.

Mandatory fluid breaks are advisable, don’t wait for a child to tell you they are thirsty.

Wear the correct sports gear

Wearing the appropriate and properly fitted sports gear during practice and games can help

avoid minor and serious injuries.

Athletes need the correct equipment, and need to wear it for both practices and games. This in-

cludes shin guards, mouth guards, correct sports shoes for the game and don’t forget sunscreen.

Coaches to be trained in First Aid and CPR

Make rest a priority

Avoid overuse injury by resting all players during each practice and game.

Encourage players to report any pain or injuries they may have during practices or games.

Be a supportive parent

Encourage your child to stay injury free and healthy while playing sports.

demands of playing sports

Lee Chang Dong's Poetry basically follows two story-

lines: a grandmother's late-life quest to write a prop-

er poem, and her equally belated attempt to deal

with her grandson's involvement in a schoolmate's

apparent suicide.

So goes Lee Chang Dong's latest feature, where

gentle comedy commingles with an even gentler

serenity, and the horror is all the stronger for being

folded into the everyday business (a round of beer,

“that's my son”) of a last-minute parent's meeting.

AISM hosted its first Service Learning celebration on April 18th, 2013, with a festive ubuntu spirit. Our part-

ners, students, teachers, parent volunteers and support staff came together to share the achievements

met, stories and beautiful performances prepared by each Service Learning group.

Earlier, our students had set up an exhibition, featuring the processes and output of the different projects.

The main piece of each group’s panel was a mind map developed during a reflection process facilitated

by our teachers.

The day was not only celebration, though. While many attendees gathered on the field to enjoy a dance

performance by W-Tofo (a Mozambican dance duo), partner, teacher and student leaders for each pro-

ject met to outline proposed activities for next year. The meetings took place within the exhibition space,

so the mind maps developed by all students could serve as references.

Our Service Learning celebration, which brought together all those involved – students, partners, teachers,

volunteers and donors – clearly demonstrated the program’s contributions to the development of strong

and lasting connections with Mozambique and with the community to which we belong. We saw clear

evidence of our core values in practice: excellence, ethical living and engaged learning.

The Service Learning Program welcomes suggestions, new ideas, volunteers and support of any kind. If you

would like to join us in our efforts to make this world a place, please take a look at our website or contact

Mr. Limaverde, our Service Learning Coordinator.

Maputo, Mozambique

Dear Laetitia and AISM students,

On behalf of the Board of Directors of AISA please allow me to congratulate you and the American

International School of Mozambique on being awarded the AISA Service Award for 2013 for your

‘Ministerio Arco-Iris’ programme.

This is a very special award that is given to outstanding community service initiatives undertaken by

students from AISA schools across Africa.

I can see from the very thoughtful and detailed submission from your school

that the ‘Ministerio Arco-Iris’ programme is indeed a worthy recipient of the

$1000 award. I hope that this contribution will be able to help you sustain or

even expand this initiative in the future.

Yours Sincerely

AISM Travels to AISJ for Soccer Tournament

AISM boys’ varsity and JV soccer teams travelled to AISJ on May 4th for a soccer tournament. The JV

boys did well in their tournament with the highlight being their 3-0 win over Maryvale College. Their of-

fense greatly improved this year, but they were unfortunate to be knocked out on penalties in the round

of 16.

The varsity boys had a great tournament. They made it all the way to the final four before being defeat-

ed by AISJ. The team drew great praise from other schools’ coaches who admired their skill and team

play. Zuva Donduro was a stand-out player in the tournament notching up five goals in his fourth trip to

AISJ with our team. Zuva graduates shortly - we wish him best of luck in the future

AISM girls’ varsity and JV soccer teams went to AISJ the following weekend. Our JV girls’ performance

exceeded all expectations with a win against the International School of South Africa and a draw with

AISJ. They fell in two tough matches against Diepsloot, but overall it was an amazing tournament perfor-

mance by the young team playing in the U19 bracket.

The varsity girls team made it all the way to the final four before being defeated by Diepsloot. Our girls

were a force to be reckoned with in the tournament with their highlight being a solid 7-0 victory over Holy

Family.

Congratulations to all of our soccer players.

games over InterMaputo before being downed

by the Portuguese School and eventual

champs Tico Tico Academy.

The highlight of the day was when our U10 team

won the tournament championship. They were

undefeated in four games on the day and de-

feated the Portuguese School, Tico Tico, and

InterMaputo. Congratulations to Marise, Lo-
