As we close our first year at the Eastlink Centre with all its challenges and growth, I can reflect on how this building has impacted so many lives. I know we have changed lives because we see it... every day! People in happy fulfilling careers who are excited to come to work every day and bring new ideas to this Centre and to the whole

community! Or, the people whose lives have changed because they learned to swim or lost weight and can now run and play with their kids! That is the impact the Eastlink Centre has made to our community and will continue to make throughout 2013.

I have mentioned many times that the success of this year has been not only because of the dedication of the staff

but also our community. Our staff has used this past year to get to know the building and we are dedicated to making 2013 a year geared to improving and increasing communication, programs and services. Our Events and Marketing team have a number of exciting activities planned for 2013. We have also provided new benefits and rewards for our new and renewing members. The community has showed us great support through-out the year not only by utilizing our programs and services but also by being so patient with our growing pains.

Thank you once again Grande Prairie for your support and making the Eastlink Centre a success. We can’t wait to show you what we have in store for 2013.

‘move it & lose it’ is under way here at the Eastlink Centre. With close to 70 participants, who are getting together on a weekly basis for workouts and seminars. For this year’s ‘move it & lose it’ we were lucky to welcome Garfield Wilson to Grande Prairie as our keynote speaker. Wilson kicked off the challenge and inspired us all!

Garfield’s lesson: “change the focus from the WHAT you’re doing to lose weight to WHY you’re losing weight to be healthy.” Move away from worrying about the pounds and focus on the life that you want to lead. Take stock of what is important to you in your life and why you want to live this life to its fullest.

Wilson is best know for his time as a trainer on CBC’s docu-series ‘Village on a Diet.’ He helped motivate the people of Taylor, British Columbia to lose over one ton of weight collectively by changing their lifestyle and in turn shed pounds. Which is essentially what ‘move it & lose it’ aims to do. We want to give our participants the tools to make healthy choices and in turn create the healthy body they deserve. Garfield has “worn many hats” throughout his career but says, “personal training has been the most fulfilling. Connecting with people and helping them achieve their goals inspires me because when they find suc-

change the focus from the

WHAT you’re doing to lose weight to

WHY you’re losing weight to be healthy

cess in the gym it will transfer into every aspect of their life. Which ultimately changes them (and me) in the process ... very powerful stuff!”

The move it & lose it challenge builds on this idea of connectivity by bring people together to work toward a common goal and create a sense of community here at the Eastlink Centre. Long after the challenge is complete, these relationships will continue here at the facility and beyond.

garfield wilson

Wilson even commented on how amazing our facility is, saying he was “blown away by the Eastlink Centre. The largest fitness facility I’ve ever been to and surprisingly cozy which is a testament to the enthusiastic team at the Centre. A stellar group who will no doubt have a huge impact on the com-mmunity of Grande Prairie.”

Thank you Garfield, we strive to!

what’s happening

Eastlink Centre had its first Anniversary this December and we had much to celebrate!! What an exciting year, with so many firsts! Grande Prairie has been waiting for a facility like this for a long time. You have showed your support by frequenting the facility in droves and surpassing all expectations!

We decided a celebration was in order and there was something happening in every corner of the building. The Fieldhouse became a stage with local entertainment wowing us all day long. The second level concourse was a buzz with the opening of ‘the nook,’many child & youth ac-tivities and the Synquatics open house. Rotary Avenue had cake, face painting and even hoola hoop demonstrations.

Santa Claus even joined us for the special occasion. Santa met with the kids and stayed around to have his photo taken. Santa even took some time to take a dip in our Aquatics facility. Playing with children in Aquaterasaurus Land and getting a little R & R in the Panda Tank & Vac Truck Family Hot Tub.

Meet Jim Qually! He clocked over 100 miles on our Pink Cybex tread-mill during the October Breast Cancer fundraiser.

You can find Jim anyday of the week up in the Ernie’s Fitness Centre. He’s hard to miss with his unique running style. Qually integrates his martial arts training with his treadmill workout. You will see him jump and spin, even run backwards on the treadmill.

Find FUN in your workout today!

Mix it up if you have to!!

We also teamed up with Free FM to fill a truck full of food donations for the Salvation Army. This was a huge success, raising over $80 000.

Always feel so good when we get the chance to connect with our community.

Thank you from all of us, for an amazing year

Meet the familiar faces around the

If you are a regular around the Eastlink Centre you start to get to know folks who work here, so we wanted to share a few familiar faces with you so next time you say Hi, you will know who they are!

Tricia Piepgrass & Rochelle Van Buskirk Customer Care Hosts

Hey there, Hi there, Ho there! My name is Tricia Piepgrass. I’m what you might call “a jokester!” I absolutely love to laugh and giggle and my favorite thing in the whole world to do is dance! I have 4 awesome kidlets and an amazing hubby. We moved to GP 7 years ago from Edmonton I have worked at the Eastlink Centre for just

answer! I have made so many cool friends and met so many talented people while working here and I look forward to meeting many more. I also look forward to seeing you here at the coolest place in GP. Peeps Out!

Hi there, my name is Rochelle Van Buskirk. I was born in Grande Prairie with a few generations preceding me. Needless to say, my roots are deeply planted here! I am married to a great guy named Jason and together we have four sons, one daughter, and one adorable grandson.

Outside of work I spend most of my time doing the usual "mom stuff" like running kids here and there, wondering what to make for supper, and trying to keep up with the never-ending pile of laundry. When not busy with the day to day things, I really enjoy being creative...especially in the area of interior decorating.

I have been working for the city for about one year now. As a

people of our community in a variety of different ways. From giving tours of our amazing facility, to face-paint-ing at a special event...no two days are ever the same!

Over this last year I have developed true friendships with both co-workers and customers that I know will last a lifetime. I look forward to the years ahead, knowing that there are many more tours to give, many more faces to paint, and many more friendships to gain : )

Megan HofAquatics Coordinator

I have been working for the City of Grande Prairie for 4 years, currently at Eastlink Centre as one of three Aquatic Coordinators. I have an administrative background that I never could have predicted would bring me over to aquatics, but am I ever glad it did! Our facility boasts a genuinely fun and vibrant atmosphere, there is never a dull or boring day for us and because of this constant need to work as a team we are building lasting relationships.

The City offers no shortage of opportunities to advance and continu-ally learn. My supervisors have always acknowledged what my passions are, specifically Eastlink Centre’s Tailored Aquatics Program, and allowed me the freedom in my job to pursue those passions. I consider myself to be very fortunate to get to work with the family the City has welcomed me into. I look forward to many happy years with my coworkers and new friends.”
