It is such an honor for me as the founding director to still have the opportunity to remain so involved in not only the strategic visioning and planning for our program, but also the day-to-day operations which allow me the blessing of getting to know more personally the members of our community of learners. One of the ways in which we continue to expand our programming in order to deepen the relationships within our community is through special events. The goal of offering special events is to enhance our educational programs; expand our format to include evening opportunities in which those still working during the day would be able to participate; provide a social environment whereby we can continue to showcase the talent and expertise of our UDOLLI members; and to encourage UDOLLI members to bring non-members with them to the event as a way to introduce others to our program and hopefully get them involved. Everyone attending our UDOLLI special events is grateful for the experience, and our numbers of those participating, as well as the special events we are offering, continue to grow. The Special Events Committee has confirmed the UDOLLI special events for the remainder of this program year, and very soon we will begin planning for next year. Because the number of proposed events is quickly beginning to outnumber the time we have available, the members of the Committee and I are asking all those interested in offering a special event to submit their request by sending an e-mail or letter to me describing the proposed event. The committee will consider all submissions as we plan for the special events programming for the coming UDOLLI year, September 2018-June 2019. Our goal is to offer a variety of new events while still supporting a few regular favorites and to have all special events for the year in place in the fall. Then I can turn my attention to working with the committee as we plan for the 25th anniversary of our program, September 2019-June 2020. Thank you for your continued support of our lifelong learning community. Learning in community is the hallmark of the Marianist charism at the University of Dayton and nowhere do you see this modeled more effectively than in the UD Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S UPDATELearning in Community—The Hallmark of the Marianist Charism at the University of DaytonOf all the programs I have the privilege of directing on behalf of the University of Dayton, my most favorite is the UD Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.

Then I can turn my attention to working with the committee as we plan for the 25th

anniversary of our program, September 2019-June 2020.

Thank you for your continued support of our lifelong learning community. Learning in community is the hallmark of the Marianist charism at the University of Dayton and nowhere do you see this modeled more effectively than in the UD Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.

FROM THE PRESIDENT

Another Event-Filled Year Closes for UDOLLI: a Real Tribute to Our Executive Director and Record Number of VolunteersIt’s hard to believe that the 2017-2018 year at UDOLLI is nearing a close. I’ve enjoyed my

first year as President of the Board of Advisors. Most impressive are the number of UDOLLI

members who contribute as moderators, liaisons, board members, and volunteers. This

year, a record number of UDOLLI members also showed their talents at our special events,

including:

• Richard Prigozen at the wonderful classical guitar recital and also at Music Trivia Night

• Jude Walsh Whelley and the legacy writers and poets, Shulamit Adler and the

photographers, Peg Farmer and the Zentangle artists

• Gary Ruff, our Rock ‘n’ Roll DJ and trivia expert, with dancers Mary Rose Pica and Dale

Searcy, guitarist Richard Prigozen, and all the brave twisters

• Terry Martin, UDOLLI’s own horse racing expert

• Dennis Turner and Bob Thum, our Holocaust educators

UDOLLI has a national reputation as a premier program in the OLLI network of 119

programs. This would not be possible without the continuous leadership of our Executive

Director, Julie Mitchell. Julie is celebrating her 30th anniversary of working with

Continuing Education and was the founder of the Institute for Learning in Retirement, the

forerunner of UDOLLI. Her vision and efforts succeeded in having this program become

part of the OLLI network and in obtaining the Osher Foundation endowment grants. Not

resting on past achievement, Julie is busy planning the celebration for the 25th year of

Lifelong Learning at UD in 2019. Congratulations and thanks, Julie Mitchell!

GROWING IN UDOLLIUDOLLI is a place where we can be ourselves and explore aspects of ourselves that

uniquely fit into a peer education community. We find joy and sometimes surprise in

our own creative abilities—in developing seminars, moderating and teaching, and the

variety of hands-on activities, from horticulture to acting to card-making. Sometimes

we disclose and discover facets of ourselves that lay dormant, unshared, or that we

never knew existed.

The Resource Room is one way we celebrate the

creative gifts of UDOLLI members. The writings and

visual art of past and current members appear on the

bookshelves and on the Big Wall. Participate in one

of our photography seminars and next year, show us

the fruit of your creativity.

We evolve in UDOLLI. We enrich each other,

encourage, and cultivate. In Nancy Hatton’s Visions

of Experience seminars, we learned the basics of

exhibiting. During winter session 2018, I had the

pleasure of staging the show Shared Values: Studies

in black and white. “Values” refers not only to the light and dark of the displayed black

and white images, but also to the shared values of the three exhibited photographers—

the co-moderators of the UDOLLI winter program seminar, Creative Studio: Shoot.

Process. Print!

John Sheehan, Stephen Goldberg and I, Shulamit

Adler, are committed to peer-to-peer education.

In 2009, I was recruited by veteran moderator Bob

Sherman to assist him in presenting creative aspects

of photo processing. UDOLLI members requested

a full seminar on the topic, which has evolved into

approaches that foster awareness and intentionality

for any photographer and decanting your personal

vision and heart into your images. John has

taught photography around the Miami Valley for

decades, mentoring us to understand and master

fundamentals of photography and camera use.

He is now broadening this to include intention, purpose, and inspiration. Stephen

joined as a moderator with this year’s Creative Studio, introducing participants to

Photoshop Elements.

Growing in UDOLLI continued on next page

As co-moderators, we shared our enthusiasm for photography and our particular strengths

as photographers, to inspire and elevate participants’ photography and to promote their

confidence to print and display their images. During spring session, I mounted the work of

all the winter seminar participants, in Creative Studio: Shoot. Process. Print. Exhibit! Visit

the River Campus, second floor Resource Room to see the photography of the 17 exhibitors.

Through photography, UDOLLI members express their aesthetic sensibility, joy, and depth.

This seminar, plus exhibit, provided the vehicle to share their vision, and, together, have the

pleasure and the risk of showing their work formally, many for the first time.

The variety of UDOLLI

photography seminars

have covered mastering

camera knowledge and

skills; photo processing;

nature photography,

portraiture, and

other genres;

history of Dayton

photojournalism;

and the work of great

photographers. Creative

Studio seminars are

photography workshops.

They build skills and

enhance participants’

technical and creative control of their image-making, whether on mobile phone or camera-

on-a-tripod, family snapshot or artistic expression. As the group works together to explore

new ways to approach photography, each participant is guided to cultivate their eye and

instill their distinct spirit into their images.

Join us. Bring your camera, your perspective, and your passion to a future UDOLLI

photography seminar!

ITEMS GOOD TO KNOW A CALL FOR MODERATORS

UDOLLI plans its curriculum throughout the year and is always looking for moderators to

lead seminars. If you have information, gained either through work or life experiences, that

you would like to share, contact Executive Director Julie Mitchell ( [email protected]

or 937-229-2605). Moderators and their spouses can take seminars throughout the academic

year at no charge, in addition to benefitting from many campus privileges.

AN INTERESTING AND PERSONALLY REWARDING UDOLLI PROGRAM

UDOLLI’s program, Connecting Generations & Cultures, is a perfect venue for members to

use and apply their lifelong skills. Through this program UDOLLI has partnered with several

UD and community organizations which in turn need UDOLLI volunteers to assist them with

their missions. A wide spectrum of talents is needed. If you are interested in learning more,

contact Executive Director Julie Mitchell ( [email protected] or 937-229-2605).

REGISTERING ONLINE FOR UDOLLI SEMINARS

Prior to registering for seminars online, if you should have any questions or special needs or

requests, please contact the Registration Secretary first at 937-229-2347.

YOUR GENEROUS RESPONSE TO THE 2017 UDOLLI FALL FOOD DRIVE

Thank you to all members who chose to help care for those in need within our community by

donating to the Miami Valley Foodbank. In the 2017 fall drive, monetary donations equaled

$2,046.00 and non-perishable items equaled 568 pounds. Watch for email announcements

giving the dates for the food drives in the 2018/2019 academic year. Receptacle bins are always

situated in the UDOLLI Resource Room on the second floor of River Campus.

THE FANTASTIC FLYER FOLLIES–A PERFECT WAY TO STAY FIT AND HAVE FUN

In 2018, UDOLLI launched its traveling performance company, the Fantastic Flyer Follies.

Under the direction of Jacqueline Heman, director and master dancer, the company stages

numbers from beloved “golden” musicals and performs at assisted living centers in the area.

Jacqueline is looking for singers, dancers, musicians, and actors. Enrollment is $40 for each

6-month period (January-June 2018 and July-December 2018). For additional information,

contact Jacqueline Heman at 937-435-3353.
