New Contemplative Spaces Sundays | 5:00 pm | Wilson Room or Fun & Fitness Room

In the midst of life’s busyness, are you craving space to rest and reconnect? Would you feel nurtured by some time and quiet in which to simply be, rather than be doing? This fall, as part of our parish focus on whole person wellness, we are shifting the form of our Sunday evening Contemplative Service to encompass forms of meditation and contemplation from a variety of traditions. Join us as we connect with God, Our Living Compass with the following lay facilitators:

October 15 Susan Ledenham (Passage Meditation) October 22 Todd Bankler (Mindfulness for Inner Freedom, 2) October 29 Judy Neely (Walking the Labyrinth [*in Sanctuary])

Submitted by Travis Helms

Walking the Labyrinth

Would you like to take a break from the busyness of life? It is God’s desire that you stay near Him as you walk along your life path. “Draw near to GOD and He will draw near to you.” James 4: 7-8. The labyrinth is a sacred space where you can find serenity, solace, and spiritual renewal in the presence of God.

The St. Mathew’s labyrinth will be available in the sanctuary thru November 26. To gain access to the labyrinth, please obtain key at desk downstairs during business hours: 8:00 am–4:00 pm, Monday–Friday . . . and return the key when finished.

Our Team Leader is Albert Hernandez ([email protected]); our Spiritual Advisor is Fr. Bruce Chabot.

Providing food to those less fortunate

This week the Caritas Food Pantry could use the following non-perishable food items*: cooking oil; canned mixed vegetables, spinach, and peas; canned ham; canned pork and beans; canned fruit; peanut butter; Hamburger-/Tuna Helper-type meals; and spaghetti sauce (in cans or plastic bottles only please). Please feel free to bring other non-perishable food items too.

This week’s item for our St. Matt’s Children for Caritas Children program is Honey Nut Cheerios. This week the Pantry could also use shaving cream, shampoo, and toothpaste as their stock is really low.

If you’d like to contribute toward the purchase of perishable food items for the pantry, please leave a $1.00 or more in the money box on the table in the Caritas Corner of the Commons. Thank you for your generosity. Submitted by Jane Baxter Lynn

All Saints Day at St. Matt ’s: Morten Lauridsen ’s Lux Aeterna November 5 | 10:30 am | Sanctuary

Mark your calendars for the Lux Aeterna by Morten Lauridsen, which will be sung during the regular sections of our mass. The Kyrie and Sanctus are from Messe Solennelle, Op. 16 by Louis Vierne. Lauridsen composed the requiem Lux Aeterna in 1997, the year his mother died. She was the muse who introduced him to music, playing swing jazz and singing to him as a toddler.

The five movements of Lux Aeterna are based on various references to light from sacred Latin texts: perpetual light, light risen in the darkness, Redeemer-born light from light, light of the Holy Spirit, light of hearts, most blessed light, eternal light—all supporting an earthbound spirit seeking not only mercy, understanding, and consolation but also renewal. Lauridsen uses the beginning and ending of the traditional Requiem Mass to open and close Lux Aeterna.

In short, Lux Aeterna is a beautiful, haunting piece that suits an All Saints worship service. We hope that you’ll join us!

Offshoots Small Groups

Offshoots small groups are a chance for parishioners to share our passions with one another and our neighbor. This initia-tive grows out of the idea that wherever Christians are present, the body of Christ is revealed. So have some fun with these groups, get to know your fellow parishioners, and invite a friend to “come and see” a little glimpse of the Kingdom. If you want to form your own Offshoot with support from church staff and clergy, email [email protected] and [email protected]. Formation of groups is a rolling process throughout the year, so keep your ideas coming!

Helping Our Neighbors (HON)—Homeless Outreach in Northwest Austin

Friends, for those of you interested in participating, however much or little, in the ministry to help our homeless neighbors in Northwest Hills, here are some opportunities for service:

Johanne Ibsen Wolford, the HON coordinator has arranged an event on November 11, 2017 at 5:00 pm at Body Business on Anderson Lane at which our homeless friends can shower, receive free hair cuts, as well as food, new clothing, and a dinner. Help is needed at the event and in advance. Needs include: a) attending the event and helping the homeless neighbors with getting new clothing, or being available to greet at the event; b) shopping the day or two in advance of the event to purchase clothing and underwear; c) helping to coordinate transportation—this could include picking up some homeless folks, which will be pre-arranged, or providing bus passes; and d) helping to provide food items. If you are available to help please contact Dineen Majcher at [email protected] or Johanne Ibsen at [email protected]

We have started an “Angels for Homeless” list for people who are interested in helping intermittently with particular needs of homeless neighbors. For example, when housing is able to be provided through Community First Village, or elsewhere, there often are needs for basic housing supplies. We will send out occasional e-mails to our list of Angels and if you are in a position to help on particular needs at that time, please let us know and we will coordinate pick up and deliver. Examples in the past have included a mop and bucket, artwork for the walls, spare pots and pans, etc. Dineen Majcher will coordinate this list and you can sign up with her at [email protected].

Children’s & Youth Sunday Morning Formation

The Family Ministry Team has an exciting season of programming planned for this autumn. Susan and Travis will be offering a kid-friendly curriculum on health and wellness designed to dovetail with our adult programming for this fall. Continuing through the fall, we’ll be basing our gatherings on the Living Compass curriculum, “outfitting individuals, families, congrega-tions, and organizations with tools and training for the journey toward wellness and wholeness.” Our community as a whole will congregate Sunday mornings at 9:15 am in Huffman Hall; and children and youth will then break off for age-appropriate lessons on “Heart, Soul, Strength & Mind.”

No meeting this Sunday; all will stay together for the Bishop’s talk—see you on the 22nd!

Trunk or Treat—SAVE THE DATE! Sunday, October 29 | 9:15 - 10:15 am (during the Sunday School hour)

We are currently looking for families to host a trunk so that children can play a game at your car and win a prize/candy. Trunks don’t have to be super fancy and the Family Ministry team is happy to help with theme suggestions. This is a low-key fellowship opportunity for all. Everyone dresses up for Halloween, plays games, and then worships together (in costume) in the Family Service at 10:30 am. Tons of fun for the whole family! Please contact Susan Goodman, [email protected] if you are interested in hosting a trunk.
