Dear Liberty Hill Family and Friends:

As we move into Autumn, the season of color and crisp cool

mornings, I am thankful for the time that we have shared. We have

sung beautiful songs, prayed prayers, entertained cyclists, welcomed

guests, eaten hot dogs and pound cake, gone on hay rides, and so much

more. We have celebrated birth, and we have mourned with those

experiencing grief. All of these events in the life of the church remind

me of the circle of life.

Autumn introduces us to new possibilities. It is a time of wonder as nature paints a

colorful portrait of red and yellow and orange against a brilliant blue sky. Here on the Hill,

we are able to see this beauty and soak in its majesty as we serve the risen Lord. As we move

closer to the season of Advent, let us be mindful of the gift that awaits us. But let us also

remember to turn back and give thanks for all that God has given us through the years.

I am excited to serve God with you!

Blessings,

Dot

It’s a Small World November Elder Article contributed by Elder Peggy Sneed

I don’t know how many of you have ever heard of “The Big Grab” which is a 43-mile yard sale held every second week in September. Carole Cook and I have gone to this sale for the past three years and it is a fun time for us; we talk, laugh, eat and have a great time. It is an all day adventure- both of us always say we need nothing yet somehow wind up filling the vehicle we are driving. We usually stop for breakfast in Lugoff then we’re on to Ridgeway, Winnsboro and Blythewood before our day is over.

We stop at several places, but there are also sales we just pass on by. One of our every-year stops is the Winnsboro First Methodist Church and this year was no different. We looked around and picked up a few things and as we were paying for our items one of the ladies of the church asked us where we were from. We told her Liberty Hill. She then asked us if we had ever been to the Lakeside services for Liberty Hill Presbyterian Church. We told her we had since we were both members of the church and the choir. She said, “We had the most awesome and moving experience at Lakeside in July,” as tears came into her eyes. She said there was a teenager baptized! Carole and I both spoke at the same time and told her that was my granddaughter, Jessica. She then told us why Jessica’s baptism was so special to her, her husband and their friend. Her husband’s friend had lost his home and all his possessions in a house fire a year earlier and he had moved in with them. They had been trying unsuccessfully to get him to attend church with them, but he refused and told them he just wasn’t ready to attend church. She said July 4th they were at the lake and they insisted the friend go to Lakeside services with them. After the worship service and Jessica’s baptism were over and they were returning home, the friend thanked them for insisting he attend church with them. He said the Baptism was the most moving thing he had ever seen. She said she felt moved because it was the first time she had ever seen anyone baptized in “the river” and it was something she would never forget. She said it was wonderful to see an infant Baptized, but seeing a teenager make her own decision to live for Christ was beyond words. Carole and I thanked the lady for the kind comments and told her we looked forward to seeing her next summer at Lakeside. It would seem we would have asked for this lady’s name, but we didn’t. We will look for her next summer. I thought about this conversation after I got home. It is amazing how Jessica’s baptism brought out so much emotion from this lady, her husband and his friend. It also brought to my mind that as Christians we are mostly unaware when we are showing our faith to others. Matthew 5:16 says “Let your light shine before others, so they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in Heaven.” My thought for this whole year is: The Lord rejoices over me so how can I show God’s goodness and love to someone today?

Dear Church Family,

Your love and prayers made it possible for us for us to share Dana for

seventeen months longer than the two days to two weeks we were given on

April 12, 2015.

The day before Dana passed, sitting beside her bed reading, I came across this

quote, “God gives us love; something to love, he lends us.” I am so grateful he

qualified us for a Dana Loan.

Thank you from the bottom of all of our hearts.

I think of our Fall Festival as the kickoff event for the renewal of thanksgiving for what God has given us. We should be thankful each and every day; however, special events such as the Fall Festival prompt us to be in a mindful state of appreciation for

many things. Among those things I was thankful for on Sunday:

a church filled with members and friends during the unified service

our children and adults participating in the costume parade

a wonderful lunch together in the fellowship hall which was seated to capacity and decorated with pumpkins, scarecrows, etc. lovingly loaned by church members

phenomenal response (over 25) to the request for baked goods for the Cake Walk; over $100.00 was raised with the Cake Walk

the relaxing hayride through our beautiful community

the spirituality of our music, songs, and message

the contribution of candy for the preparation of treat bags for the Lancaster Children's Home by our children and adults

exceeding our Dimes for Hunger goal; contributions will be given to local food banks in our local communities

There are so many folks who worked to make this a special day and I am deeply grateful for their help and contributions:

Decorating the fellowship hall and preparing the tables for serving: Marguerite Adams, Pat Coates, Sylvia Patterson, and Millie Plyer

Decorating the Trunk of Treats oak tree and bench: Terry Hoffman and Mrs. Izetta

Face Painting and Crafts: Lisa Knight and Megan Rao

Preparing hot dogs, the fixings and dessert: Patti Kelly, Millie Plyer, Peggy Sneed and Darrell Ross

Inspiring us with their costumes: Bill Cram and LaVonne Newsome (the Duke and Duchess of Dimes); Gene Ghent (Wild Bill Hickok); Rob Jones (Arnold Palmer)

Taking us on the relaxing hayride around the community: Emerson and Pat Coates and family

Taking pictures of the event: Trish Flynn

Having our church grounds ready for our celebration: Mike Clark and Lloyd Douglas

Our Dimes for Hunger goal was $800.00 this year. The total contributed exceeded $1,100.00. Thank you for giving to Dimes for Hunger. Our local community organizations will be very touched by our love and support.

With thanksgiving and love,

Laura Horton Care Team Elder

What a wonderful morning we had on Friday, October 14! About 100 Tour des Trees riders coasted up the hill to Miss Bettie Richards Hall where they were welcomed and refreshed by LHPC members. The riders LOVED the church and grounds and our warm hospitality. They were shocked by the downed tree and many of them expressed sincere sorrow about the destruction. This event would not have been possible without the help of hard-working volunteers and generous donors: Special thanks to

Laura Horton for alerting the troops and getting us all in formation. She also made a Sam’s run and bought all the drinks and snacks for the riders. Jack and Barbara Owens brought Barbara’s wonderful oatmeal cookies and greeted and served the riders. Trish was on hand to take pictures and she brought us her water cooler to use. Gwen Starnes also lent us a 5 gallon water cooler. George and Alexandria Harkins brought Halloween pretzels, 3 HUGE coolers and greeted and served. Lisa Knight brought several different baked goodies, including her brownies which were a hit! One of the riders even made a comment about them on our Facebook page. Lisa also manned the jewelry table and sold $90 worth of BSG jewelry! Bob and June Dornblaser brought June’s chocolate chip cookies and greeted and talked with the riders. Bob has done bike tours similar to this so he enjoyed talking shop with many of the riders. Betty Riggan donated M&M’s and served as a greeter. Millie baked pumpkin

cookies that tasted just like pumpkin pie. Patti Kelly sliced watermelon, oranges and bananas for the riders. They especially liked the watermelon! Peggy Sneed served and welcomed the riders. Doug and Mary Douglas brought a variety of homemade cookies and stayed to greet our guests. Elaine Maree donated her chocolate chip cake bars which quickly disappeared along with all of the other homemade treats! Sylvia came up and helped us get everything in order as well as greeting and serving. We were delighted to have Pastor Dot spend the morning with us, too, and she enjoyed getting to spend a little extra time with church members.

It was so gratifying to show off our beautiful piece of Heaven on the Hill while we showed our love to our brothers and sisters who are working so hard to make this world a better place by

encouraging and promoting environmental stewardship. Thank you, volunteers, for giving so much of yourselves so that others would be refreshed.

In response to your thanking us, I can't resist giving a title to this reply in Thanking You So Very Much as well . . . calling it "The Rest of the Story". Although I wish not to imply that I can even come close in comparison to the great stories of Mr. Paul Harvey. And as you might imagine, by giving this a title, this writing is likely to be quite lengthy, therefore I ask that you please bear with me as I pull so many thoughts together. I feel ever so compelled to share a part of my story with you following the joy experienced with this past Sunday's "luncheon.” I learned that Bill had started attending Liberty Hill Presbyterian in 2010 while living at the lake . . . although the visits were sporadic during the later part of the year, as he began weekend visits to the Raleigh/Wake Forest, NC area courting me : ). During these weekends he attended with me local Baptist churches, which we together enjoyed opportunities to participate with and their community support efforts. I had been away from church most of my adult life until early 2010. In hindsight, I claimed to be too busy for anything but work, and otherwise allowed life to take priority. I desired to work independently in the world of commercial property management; then following many years of being the one and only go-to person for a group of investors and tenants, I started to pray (not literally speaking, just a strong heartfelt desire) for a life where I didn't feel so alone with all the responsibility working independently presented. Be careful what you pray for as that day unexpectedly arrived in 2009, and it arrived abruptly . . . God obviously heard my prayer, and my life journey was to change forever more! At the time this occurred I was devastated; all I knew was my work, it was my life. The people I was connected to through it, these people, I referred to as family (staying too busy for my immediate family unfortunately). Yet now, my only hope, was to let go, and let God take control! It took several months before a new job opportunity presented itself; a job that I was unfamiliar with, becoming a sales manager for a commercial sheet metal fabricator. The only stipulation upon my then hire with this company was that, prior to starting, I was being led to go on a mission trip for 2 weeks to Uganda. Letting go and letting God was definitely charting new territory! I had come from a background of construction, so working for a sheet metal company wasn't that far fetched, but going to Uganda! This was certainly never a place on my bucket list of places to visit . . . although, the circumstances surrounding this opportunity had already been more than a year in the making, but came to me by surprise. When it was presented to me at the last minute, the Lord instructed me to go without hesitation, which took place May 2010. I then returned home to a new job . . . very grateful, yet now questioning my ability with this new job and with this mission travel. This new employment opportunity soon led me to a project in SC where Bill and I became reacquainted after having worked together some 30+ years earlier . . . then in May 2012 we married . . . and we're still rejoicing over it : ) How very Good is Our God!!!! "Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you your heart's desires", Psalms 37:4. Although admittedly my experience in Uganda, and the connection with those remaining there, continues to remain a mystery for me. Relocating to SC following our marriage, we've experienced a whirlwind of events that have kept us on the move and quite busy for the past 4.5 years. Unfortunately, these events have limited interaction in getting to know many of the locals in our community, and establishing a church home. We do however attempt to attend church when possible, recognizing how much our lives have been transformed with such love through Christ's grace and salvation . . . we so desire to worship and honor him with praise and thanksgiving for the joy He's brought to our lives. Our hearts, too, have struggled to understand the circumstances surrounding previous church experiences, where pastors have been forced out and congregations divided. We've more recently been praying for direction in finding a church where we feel we could take root. We've also come to recognize that we're not doing our part by only going to church service when convenient. Though we are being encouraged by the Word being shared . . . our Spirit has longed for more. I promise I'm getting close to the end of this writing : ) When we learned that Liberty Hill Presbyterian was transitioning with it's pastor yet again, and would be welcoming a new interim, we felt this timing could also be a new beginning for us. We discussed making a concerted effort to attend Bible Study, and in doing so, we immediately experienced a more intimate opportunity to be welcomed in. We then also took note of the covered dish luncheon to welcome Pastor Dot

Horton and Sandy Granger. She has given us permission to reprint her beautiful reply here.

and knew that this would be something we wanted to take part in. So now for a girl who is not, and doesn't desire to be, a cook, I went on a mission of sorts to figure out a recipe for a dish we could bring. Fortunately, this summer my cousin prepared a delicious baked spaghetti casserole which fed us during one of our larger crowds, so I reached out to her for the recipe. When Bill discovered what selection I'd made, his first comment was "I just thought we were to carry a covered dish to share, not something to feed a crowd." My response was "I'm a girl raised in the south . . . we want to make sure we have enough for all." Fortunately, he had already learned a prior lesson pertaining to food quantity that he didn't argue : ) Therefore late Saturday I made our grocery list, and that evening we headed into town for shopping, (and to also enjoy some of the last performances being held during the Carolina Downhome Blues Festival . . . Bill, for years, has been a huge fan). We soon discovered Food Lion was closed, so we detoured around to Walmart . . . thank goodness for these big box stores that stay open through most anything. We later arrived home to find that our power which had been on throughout the day, was now off . . . Utt Ohh! How were we going to prepare this food now for this welcoming event? Not to mention, we too had shared with our new found friends, Holly & Tommy Hayes, who had prior that day shared with us that they had been without power, so we informed them not to worry about preparing anything, we would be making plenty. We also had reached out to Linda & Keith Rowland, sharing of this Sunday's event and asking that they plan to visit, and that we again had a large enough covered dish to share. Although I'm not a morning person, yet dedicated to making this food happen, Bill took on the challenge of waking me up by 6:30 AM to start this cooking effort (power having been restored at 11:00 PM that night; another prayer answered). Together, we chopped, diced and prepared ingredients so as to get items combined and in the oven, then allowing us to prepare for church without hopefully being late. We removed the pans from the oven as we walked out the door, piping hot . . . giving each other a high-five as we pulled out of our driveway : ) Arriving to Sunday school all smiles, and praying we didn't trip and drop these pans on our way in, we soon discovered that we had not received the memo: the luncheon had been cancelled due to the storm : ( Not knowing what to do now with all this food, we saw Tommy on our way out from Sunday school, offering he and Holly one of the pans. We then placed them in our respective vehicles and returned for church service. Then, the miraculous took place! You ladies were inspired to make something great happen! We couldn't have done this! It was placed on your hearts, to see to it that visitors and friends supporting Pastor Dot would be fed this day . . . and therefore a Welcome Celebration would take place after all! It may have occurred differing from what was originally intended . . . yet isn't this how God works : ) Isn't this what He wants a church to do? : ) It reminded me that it's not just the work of those called to lead . . . it's the efforts made by the gathering of his flock . . . and when joining together wonderful things unfold . . . honoring God as He intends for us to : ) Bill and I left church Sunday with smiles and tears . . . our prayers for God to use us, and to help us find a church that we could be a part of, and participate with, had just been experienced and answered in the blink of an eye. And although "the rest of the story" has yet to be finalized . . . Bill and I are looking forward to opening a new chapter with each of you at Liberty Hill Presbyterian Church. Thank You from the bottom of our hearts for what you do and did! Through your efforts we wholeheartedly believe God was showing us the way : ) With love, LaVonne Newsome & Bill Cram
