APRIL 2019

April is traditionally the time of year when we think of Spring. It is a time of rebirth and renewal

in nature. It is also a time to adjust and reset goals and re-energize after the long months of

winter. Our students are eager to go outdoors to play soccer and baseball and to start their

rigorous training for Track and Field. It is critical to our students continued good health that

some exercise is part of a daily regimen. Regular meals, adequate sleep and a balance between

school and leisure activities is the recipe to a rich, healthy life! It is my hope that many of you

have examined your busy households to ensure that everyone has activities and the time

available to balance busy lives!

Our Dance-a-thon fundraising activity was on April 25th

. With over $8,200.00 raised, we plan to

purchase more library books, more STEM & STEAM materials, and reconditioned computers for

the lab, provide Scientists in school presentations and purchase more gym equipment for all

divisions. We sincerely thank our students and their parents for your continuous support.

Summer is fast approaching as are the opportunities to enroll/sign your child up for some new

summer adventure. Take advantage of the programmes that are all over the city and provide the

excitement of a new learning experience. Your child will be richer for it!

Talk Presented to the Kindergarten students on Climate Change

David Lewis PI Contest Students were super excited for this year's biggest Pi day event ever...at Lewis on Thursday, March 28, we had an overwhelming number of students participating in reciting the Pi digits with a total of 85

contestants, 28 students from primary, 28 students from junior and 29 students from the intermediate

division. The top 10 students also had a chance to show off their memorizing skills to the rest of the

school in the afternoon assembly. The students who recited 20 digits from grades 1-3 and 30 digits or

more from grade 4 onwards got to enjoy real pie. Let’s continue our conversation about Pi !

14159265358979323846....

In Grade 1 / 2 : 5 recited more than 20 digits, winner in this category recited 28 digits

In Grade 3 / 4 : 9 recited more than 30 digits, winners in this category recited 60 & 61 digits

In Grade 5 / 6 : 10 recited more than 45 digits, 3 recited over 75 digits and 3 recited over 100 digits,

winner in this category recited 190 digits.

Grade 7 / 8 : 10 recited over 70 digits, 4 recited over 100 digits.

Sivan had 370, Peggy had 190 digits, Naveel, Angela, Yurui, Samuel and Wayne recited more than 100

digits. Judges counted about 4606 digits not including some recounts for those that were a little

overwhelmed the first time around!! Let us not forget the biggest motivation of them all which was the

real PIES!!!! Mrs. Peach sliced her delicious pies into more than 100 slices for the winners, judges and

teachers!!

Scientist, Stephanie

Arnold, showing the

effects of climate

change to our

Kindergarten

students. Our students

get hands on

experiences on climate

change.

Interesting tidbits to share with students: So far 31 trillion digits of Pi have been calculated so

far by Emma Haruka Iwao. The record for memorizing the most digits is 70 000

digits of Pi by Rajveer Meena. Record at our very own Lewis stands with Stone

Yang who graduated last year and who had counted

some 482 digits ....

Intermediate Co-Ed Volleyball The intermediates had their first time experience playing beach volleyball which was so much

fun. They played again on April 9th

at the Co-Ed Volleyball Tournament and they earned 2nd

place in the conference final. Thanks to coaches Mrs. Wall and Mrs. Rasmus! Well done!
