For our new neighbors, this is an annual tradition where we gather at the intersection of Beechwood Lane, Knoll Drive and Sleepy Ridge also referred to as “the Triangle”. President’s Letter

Dear Neighbors -

As I write this message in early October, it seems that Fall has finally arrived! Hopefully the days of 90 degree highs are behind us, and we can look forward to a beautiful Fall with lots of changing leaves and seasonably cool (but not too cool) temperatures.

As a gentle reminder, Fairfax County collects yard waste throughout the year on the normally scheduled pick up days. In addition, the County will also schedule three special leaf pickups (generally one per month in November, December, and January). Residents will be notified of the anticipated collection dates via mail, signs posted at neighborhood entrances, and any updates to the County website https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/publicworks/recycling-trash/leaf-collection-dates. If you are taking advantage of the leaf pickup service, please ensure that your leaf piles do not block the neighborhood’s roads.

Over the past month, we had another wonderful Fall Picnic and General Membership Meeting, successful neighborhood clean up, and other activities. I would like to thank all the organizers and participants at these events. In addition, several members of the Executive Committee met with the Falls Church Anglican leadership to tour the new sanctuary at 6565 Arlington Boulevard (open as of September 8, 2019). The attendees also discussed issues of common concern and potential areas of collaboration (like coordinated cleanups along South Street). I would also like to acknowledge the work of the Roadway Safety Committee (previously known as the Holmes Run Road Work Group), which has met several times and will be reaching out to neighbors to solicit input on options for improving safety throughout the neighborhood.

Regarding upcoming events:

1. The annual Halloween Parade will be October 27th (see front page). 2. The Roadway Safety Committee and the SHCA Executive Committee will host an open forum on November 8th, from 7 to 9 PM, at the Mason District Governmental Center (please see Page 7 for more information on the Committee’s efforts and the upcoming meeting). 3. The next SHCA Executive Committee meetings will take place on October 21st and November 18th. These meetings are open to neighborhood residents and we welcome anyone who would like to attend.

If you have any ideas or suggestions (for improving the neighborhood, the Executive Committee, or anything in between), please feel free to reach out to me or other members of the Executive Committee.

Take care, Joe Pika

2019 Fall Picnic The huge pumpkin moon bounce left no mystery as to where the neighborhood’s fall picnic was this year! We had a great turnout once again for our potluck picnic that marks the end of summer and beginning of fall. The weather was perfect and the cul-de-sac on Crane Drive a perfect location for the party. It seems with every picnic, everyone ups their game on the food contributions with this year’s buffet offering a delicious assortment of all kinds of goodies! We went through 100 hot dogs all perfectly cooked by the grill master extraordinaire, Bill Walters. In addition to bringing food, neighbors brought books to donate to our new free library located at 3132 Holmes Run Road. We had a brief general meeting led by President Joe Pika. An extra special treat was a performance by the Sopranessence and our neighbor, Bharati Soman. We had a successful kick off to our annual membership drive with most neighbors in attendance paying their annual dues for the new year and picking up the updated directory. Thanks to everyone who helped make the event successful! A special shout out to the Pika Family for agreeing to have the big moon bounce in their yard and providing a lot of the supplies for the event including their grill. Our next event is the Halloween Parade and then Taste of the Hollow 2020. The date for that event will be advertised in January.

Sleepy Hollow Citizens Association Executive Committee Meeting Minutes September 9, 2019

Members Present. Joe Pika, Jan Keyes, Curtis Anderson, John Cockayne, Virginia Robinson, Peg Boyne, Kellie Bock, Sean Fox, and Bob Kokta. President Joe Pika called the meeting to order at 7:10 pm. Secretary (Bob Kokta): It was noted that the minutes for the committee’s July 2019 meeting had been previously approved via email.

Treasurer’s Report (John Cockayne): The Treasurer noted that dues were paid to the Fairfax County Federation and the expenses deducted for the National Night Out. The committee adopted the report.

First VP Report (Bill Walters): Bill in absentia conveyed that the point-of-contact list was updated in Google docs. Two neighborhood signs were still undergoing stenciling before installation.

Second VP Report (Virginia Robinson): Virginia presented a copy of this year’s directory, and noted minor formatting and substantive changes from that of the previous year. The group discussed possible additional changes for next year.

Mason District Council (Jan Keyes): Jan noted there had been no meetings since the summer.

Fairfax County Federation (Charlie Williams): The federation had not met in July or August and John noted that the federation was seeking nominations for the county’s “Citizen of the Year.” The SHCA board noted that they were still seeking alternates to represent our neighborhood at the Fairfax County Federation and Mason District Council.

Safety and Security (Curtis Anderson): Curtis reported that the National Night Out in August attracted a good turnout. He urged neighbors to sign up for Neighborhood Watch this Fall. He also reported one of the lights in a Neighborhood Watch box had been damaged and required replacement.

Social (Kellie Bock): Kellie reported on the preparations underway for the Fall Picnic on Sunday. The group agreed to include a membership drive component to the picnic. Kellie also asked for assistance with next month’s Halloween Parade event.

Communications (Peg Boyne): Peg provided the final Legend update of her tenure and noted the October 1 deadline for the next issue. The group discussed Legend content, including public event announcements and possibly including a sample ballot before elections. Joe thanked Peg for her hard work over the years in producing the Legend for the neighborhood.

Land Use (Sean Fox): Sean and Joe reported they had heard from about 10 neighbors volunteering for the traffic/land use working group. Approximately 6-7 lived along Holmes Run and the others from elsewhere in the neighborhood. The board discussed the importance of transparency in the activities of the working group, the opportunity for Pericles to describe the objectives and activities of the group during the Fall Picnic, and managing expectations for concrete county actions in response to working group recommendations.

Roadway Safety Committee (previously known as the Holmes Run Road Work Group)

Many thanks to neighbors who have expressed an interest in supporting efforts to examine options to improve the safety of Holmes Run Road and other neighborhood streets. Since its formation in late Summer, the Committee has met several times to discuss potential options for soliciting input and exploring roadway safety options. Recent and planned activities include:

Fall Picnic – Two representatives (Pericles Niarchos and Julie Sizelove) attended the Fall Picnic, providing updates, answering questions, and soliciting input from neighbors.

October – In the coming weeks, the Roadway Safety Committee will seek input across the neighborhood on what they are terming “Phase I” improvement ideas to roadway safety. To sidestep years of stalemate around sidewalks for Holmes Run Road, the Committee would like to start with more actionable items which may result in consensus and possibly even implementation over the next year, while less actionable options will continue to be explored and discussed. The Committee will rely on email, phone, and in-person methods to solicit as much input from across the Hollow as possible. Though they’ll have some specific options listed which came from earlier surveying last winter, they welcome any and all suggestions. Additionally, the Committee expects that many of these options may be potential

solutions for other trouble areas throughout the Hollow and will collect and analyze feedback on those issues as well.

November 8th – The Committee and the SHCA Executive Committee plan to host an open forum at the Mason District Governmental Center (6507 Columbia Pike, Annandale VA, 22003) from 7 to 9 PM. At this forum, the Committee and the SHCA Executive Committee will discuss roadway safety improvement and community progress thus far, and solicit input and answer any questions from interested neighbors. Additional information will be posted to the Yahoo listserv and across the neighborhood as the date gets closer.

We are truly excited at the prospect for progress in making our neighborhood as safe as possible for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists, and looking forward to everyone’s participation over the coming weeks. Please reach out to [email protected] or [email protected] if you have any questions.
