Dark lady in the Palace

Everybody knows that the Palace in Baranowice is haunted. The ghost is the dark woman holding a coil.

There are many sorts of rumour about her identity. People say that she was the last baroness Durant, poor and unhappy because her husband cheated on her. Some say, that she was a governess who poisoned all the owner’s family almost two hundred years ago. She wanted to marry him and became the mistress . Others mention a woman, the owner of Baranowice in the times of “Swedish Deluge”, who was abandoned by all her servants and lived alone in a plundered palace. Local peasants considered her a shrew or madwoman and didn’t care about her. They had enough their own problems. It’s unknown when she died. People very often could see her on the porch at noon, even in times when she was certainly dead. Her body was found by one of her relative, the priest from Cieszyn, who decided to visit her after many years. Supposedly, the woman promised to bequeath all her jewellery to her family. But neither the will nor the jewellery was found. Although her body was buried, the “dark lady” kept on appearing on the porch at noon and midnight. People murmured that it was the punishment for cursing her family at the moment of death. The ghost appears ever since in the old part of the palace. Locals mention also about the bricked-up room, which is haunted.

In the half of the nineteenth century the French baron Emil Durant and his wife came to own the palace. The haunted room was supposed to be their children’s bedroom. Little counts could not sleep there calmly even one night. Something persistently was taking their duvets off their beds and snuffed out the candles. After an ineffective exorcising the room was bricked in.
