Who are the lay magistrates?
The lay magistrates are volunteers of the general public that do not require any legal qualifications, or knowledge of the justice system. There are 3 magistrates that sit in court. The Bench Chairman who sits in the middle and is the only one allowed to speak in the open court. Along
side of them are the other two magistrates’ who are known as the “wingers”.

If you decide to become a Magistrate you will have to deal with cases such as:• Motoring Offences• Minor Assault• Theft• And even murder (although this will be
passed to the Crown Court)

YOU DON’T NEED ANY QUALIFICATIONS!Training is given to you to help you with your journey on becoming a Lay Magistrate.
If you’re thinking of becoming a Lay Magistrate there are some things you have to consider, such as:• You have to be aged
between 18 and 70• Have good hearing as you
will have to listen to the case
• Have good character
