PROGRAM

WELCOME

Good evening and welcome, we are glad you could join us.

The annual Proms festival has become a cherished tradition of classical music fans the world over. Here in Australia we’re lucky enough to have most concerts broadcast on ABC Classic, so we can enjoy them whilst having dinner or commuting to work. In 2016 Queensland Symphony Orchestra even had the privilege of performing in the inaugural Proms Australia event in Melbourne.

Tonight I’m especially looking forward to hearing Diana Doherty perform Nigel Westlake’s Oboe Concerto: Spirit of the Wild. It’s extraordinary what Diana can do on the oboe, and I’m sure you’ll be as amazed as I was when I first heard this piece.

One of the most endearing aspects of the Last Night of the Proms is the great singalong that concludes the evening. It’s quite a spectacle to see thousands of concertgoers enthusiastically belting out their Proms favourites, Union Jack in hand. Tonight we will attempt to recreate this moment, so follow our guest soprano Rachelle as she leads the singalong. You can find the lyrics in the listening guide that follows.

We hope you have a fun evening, and look forward to welcoming you back to another concert soon.

Orchestras sit in sections based on types of instruments. There are four main sections in the Western classical orchestra: strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion, and sometimes a keyboard section.

STRINGSThese instruments produce sound by bowing or plucking stretched strings.

First and Second ViolinsViolaCelloDouble BassHarp

WOODWINDWind instruments produce sound by being blown into - the vibrating air from the musician creates the sound.

Flute / PiccoloClarinet / Bass ClarinetOboe / Cor AnglaisBassoon / Contrabassoon

BRASSBrass players create sound by vibrating their lips. When this vibration is pushed through large brass tubes, it creates a huge sound.

HornTrumpet / CornetTrombone / Bass TromboneTuba

PERCUSSIONThese instruments create sound by being struck. Some instruments just make a sound; others play particular notes.

Timpani, Bass drum, Chimes, Cymbals, Glockenspiel, Side drum, Sleigh bells, Snare drum, Suspended cymbal, Tam tam, Tambourine, Tenor drum, Triangle, Whistle, Wood block, Xylophone.

Nigel Westlake (b.1958) Spirit of the Wild: Concerto for OboeNigel Westlake’s oboe concerto, Spirit of the Wild, was inspired by a trip Westlake took in 2016 to South West Tasmania, a land of ‘button-grass moorlands, heathlands, and estuaries bound by jagged peaks, wild rivers and rugged coastlines’. The music is also based somewhat on uninhibited improvisations oboist Diana Doherty demonstrated for Westlake in his Sydney studio, resulting in an energetic and sparkling concerto which was received enthusiastically at its premiere.

Camille Saint-Saëns (1835 - 1921)Symphony No.3 in C minor, Op.78 (Organ Symphony) Finale

The Organ Symphony is one of Saint-Saëns’ most frequently performed works and in recent decades has achieved a certain amount of popular success, following its quotation in Nigel Westlake’s soundtrack for the 1995 movie Babe. Notwithstanding its modern association with the little talking pig, the symphony has established itself as an orchestral showpiece in which Saint-Saëns gives literal meaning to the cliché ‘pulling out all the stops’. Tonight we hear the finale, in which the climax builds through fanfares, four-hand piano figures, loud organ chords and extensive fugal writing, carrying the work through to its triumphant conclusion.

Gioachino Rossini (1792 - 1868) William Tell OvertureThe overture to Rossini’s opera William Tell, about the eponymous Swiss hero, is a kind of mini four-movement symphony, comprising its own share of nature study. We have one of the most famous storms in the musical literature, then a depiction of dawn, followed by the march made famous by numerous TV shows.

Charles Gounod (1818 - 1893) Roméo et Juliette, Je veux vivre (I want to live)Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette is based on Shakespeare’s tragic tale of the ‘star-cross’d lovers’, but Juliette’s ‘Je veux vivre’ expresses the enthusiasm of a young girl in love and longing to savour the excitement of her family’s ball. Gounod’s aria accommodated the wishes of the renowned soprano Marie Miolan-Carvalho to showcase her coloratura.

LISTENING GUIDE

Alexander Borodin (1833 - 1887)Polovtsian Dances from Prince Igor II. Polovtsian Dance with Chorus

Borodin was a 19th-century Russian composer who sought a distinct Russianness in his music. He was actually a chemist who found time to compose major works such as the opera, Prince Igor. The Polovtsian Dances take place in Act 2 in the camp of the Polovtsi people. The tunefulness of these dances later earned them a place in the Broadway musical, Kismet.

Fly away on gentle breezes Fly swiftly, songs of love, to greet our homeland, Where once we lived in hope and knew no sorrow, Where once we sang, rejoicing in our freedom.

There beneath the burning sky Languid breezes cooled us, There the cloud-cappp’d mountains Dream above the silver sea.

There our days were long and carefree Amid the sunlit hills and shady meadows, And there the scent of roses in the valleys Once filled the sultry air with sweetest perfume, And fertile vineyards yield sweet wine. Fly away, our songs of freedom, Fly away, or songs of freedom!

Glory, honour, praises to our Khan! Fearless, mighty, ruthless warrior! Hail! Sing his praise! Praise! Great Konchak, praise him! Fiercer than the scorching midday sun! None can equal him in splendour! None!

Slaves and captives, slaves and captives, Look at those slaves of mine, Aren’t they beautiful? Captives I took from the tribes of Caspian. They can make you forget all your loneliness, Choose anyone who attracts you, And shall be yours. All acclaim him.

Glory, honour, praises to our Khan! Fearless, mighty, ruthless warrior! Hail! Sing his praise great Konchak, praise him! Fiercer than the scorching midday sun! None can equal him in splendour, none!

Braver far than all before you! Great Khan Konchak! Braver far than all before, Mighty Khan, great Konchak! Praise our Khan, Khan Konchak!

Dance and sing for Konchak’s pleasure, Let all people praise him singing! Let all people please him dancing! Offer songs of homage to our glorious Khan Konchak! Praise Khan Konchak!

George Gershwin (1898 - 1937) By StraussGeorge and Ira Gershwin, famous for their Broadway musicals, apparently first sang By Strauss, with its triple-time nod to the Viennese waltz, as a party piece. It was then incorporated into Vincente Minnelli’s The Show is On, and the 1951 film, An American in Paris.

Away with the music of Broadway. Be off with your Irving Berlin! Oh I give no quarter to Kern or Cole Porter and Gershwin keeps pounding on tin. How can I be civil when hearing this drivel? It's only for nightclubbin' Souses Oh, give me the free 'n' easy waltz that is Vienneasy and Go tell the band if they want a hand The waltz must be Strauss's Ya, ya ya! Give me oom-pa-pah!

When I want a melody Lilting through the house Then I want a melody By Strauss! It laughs, it sings! The world is in rhyme Singing in three-quarter time. Let the Danube flow along. And the ‘Fledermaus’ Keep the wine and give me song By Strauss! By Jo! By Jing! By Strauss is the thing! So I say to ha-cha-cha, her-aus! Just give me your oom-pa-pah, by Strauss! Let the Danube flow along And the ‘Fledermaus’ Keep the wine and give the song By Strauss! By Jo! By Jing! By Strauss is the thing! So I say to ha-cha-cha, her-aus! Just give me your oom-pa-pah, By Strauss!

Ola Gjeilo (b.1978) TundraNorwegian Ola Gjeilo is one of the great choral composers of today. Compared to the florid ‘Je veux vivre’, Tundra makes starker use of the female voice. And it’s appropriate. The landscape that inspired this piece – the Hardangervidda mountain plateau between Oslo and Bergen, paid tribute to in Charles Silvestri’s words – makes it easy to feel ‘that you’re treading on sacred land’.

Wide, worn and weathered, Sacred, Of green and white and granite grey; Snowy patches strewn, Anchored to the craggy earth, Unmoving; While clouds dance Across the vast, eternal sky.

Jack’s the LadFold your arms and kick, Lift your left leg out, Keep it neat and quick, Hear the other tars shout; When the fiddler starts to fiddle, Keep it straight from the middle, Tap the feet on the deck and around about

It was ‘Jack’s the Lad!’ When the fiddler struck the tune, It was ‘Jack’s the Lad!’; They would take him from his broom, Scrub the deck, tie a knot, Climb the mast, like a shot: Twas the horn-pipe for to clear a space to give him room. They would clap along and cheer him as he stepped and turned, They would give an extra tot of rum as grog well-earned; They’d recognise a master As the fiddler, ever faster, Scrubbed the horn-pipe out till Jack did shout his feet soles burned!

And he never flinch’d no matter how the fiddler played, He could dance the faster speed so well with his both feet splay’d, And clapping ever quicker With Jack never known to bicker, It was quite a feat of footwork fleet he ever made!

Fold your arms and kick, Lift your left leg out, Keep it neat and quick, Hear the other tars shout; When the fiddler starts to fiddle, Keep it straight from the middle, Tap the feet on the deck and around about.

Fold arms and kick, Left leg out, Neat and quick, Others shout, Fiddler fiddle, Straight from the middle, Tap your feet and turn about! (for last repeat, replace ‘turn about’ with ‘Jack’s the Lad!’)

Clap, cheer, Step and turn, Tot of rum, Grog well earned, Fiddler fiddle, Straight from the middle, Tap your feet and turn about!

Henry Wood (1869 - 1944)Fantasy on British Sea Songs Arr. Peter Lawson (b. 1950) III. Saucy Arethusa IV. Tom Bowling V. Jack’s the Lad

Henry Wood’s Fantasy on British Sea Songs brings us back to nature as an inspiration. Wood was also significant for today’s concert in being the founder of the Proms back in 1895.

Saucy ArethusaCome all ye jolly sailors bold Whose hearts are cast in honour's mould While English glory I unfold, Hurrah for the Arethusa! She is a frigate tight and brave As ever stemmed the dashing wave; Her men are staunch to their fav’rite launch And when the foe shall meet our fire, Sooner than strike we'll all expire On board of the Arethusa,

The fight was of the Frenchman’s land, We forced them back upon their strand, For we fought till not a stick would stand Of the gallant Arethusa. And now we’ve drv’n the foe a-shore, Never to fight with Britons more! Let each fill a glass to his fav’rite lass, A health to the captain and officers true, And all that belong to the jovial crew On board of the Arethusa.

Tom BowlingHere, a sheer hulk, lies poor Tom Bowling, The darling of our crew; No more he'll hear the tempest howling For death has broach’d him to. His form was of the manliest beauty, His heart was kind and soft! Faithful below, he did his duty And now he's gone aloft, And now he's gone aloft!

LISTENING GUIDE

Franz Lehár (1870 - 1948)Meine Lippen, Sie Küssen so Heiss (‘My lips, they give so fiery a kiss’) from GuidittaFranz Lehár’s last work, concerns a nightclub singer who knows she is irresistibly charming to her customers. When Giuditta was first produced, in 1934, it was relayed by 120 radio stations, proof that Viennese operetta could still compete with American popular music.

Why ever should it be That men at once make love to me? When they are near me, there they stand. Their eyes look deep in mine. They always kiss my hand.

Why ever should it be, They speak of magic charms in me. That no man can resist? For every time they look at me these charms persist.

But when the soft lights glint and glance As midnight hours go by They hear me sing, they see me dance It's then that I know why

On my lips every kiss is like wine In my arms love is more than divine, Its engraved in the stars high above me Men must kiss me, men must love me.

When my feet haunting rhythms inspire, In my eyes gleam the flames of desire, When I dance, then I know Fate's design. On my lips every kiss is like wine.

I have a dancer's blood That rules me like a throbbing flood. My mother was the dancing star Without a rival at the Golden Alcazar!

How great she must have been! In dreams I have so often seen The raptures when she danced; She held each heart enthralled and every eye entranced.

Her spirit wakes in me again, My fortune wills it so. At night I dance as she did then, And this is all I know:

On my lips every kiss is like wine In my arms love is more than divine, In your feet haunting rhythms inspire, In your eyes gleam the flames of desire! When I dance, then I know Fate's design. On my lips every kiss is like wine.

Rule, Britannia! When Britain first, at Heav’n's Command, Arose from out the azure main, Arose, arose from out the azure main. This was the charter, The charter of the land, And guardian angels sang this strain:

Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves; Britons never shall be slaves.

The nations not so blest as thee, Must in their turn to tyrants fall, Must in, must in, must in their turn to tyrants fall; While thou shalt flourish, shalt flourish great and free, The dread and envy of them all.

Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves; Britons never shall be slaves.

Still more majestic shalt thou rise, More dreadful from each foreign stroke; More dreadful from each foreign stroke; As the loud blast, the blast that tears the skies, Serves, serves, but to root thy native oak.

Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves; Britons never shall be slaves.

Edward Elgar (1857 - 1934)Pomp and Circumstance: No.1 in D (Land of Hope and Glory)Edward Elgar’s music has become almost a byword for Empire, but he was talking like a commercial song-plugger when he said this Pomp and Circumstance march had a melody that would ‘knock ‘em flat’.

LISTENING GUIDE

Land of hope and glory, Mother of the free, How shall we extol thee, who are born of thee? Wider still and wider shall thy bounds be set; God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet. God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet.

Hubert Parry (1848 - 1918) JerusalemParry’s Jerusalem may represent the Establishment nowadays but it initially gained widespread popularity in 1917 when it was taken up by the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies, of which Parry and his wife were keen supporters.

And did those feet in ancient time Walk upon England's mountains green? And was the Holy Lamb of God On England's pleasant pastures seen? And did the Countenance Divine Shine forth upon our clouded hills? And was Jerusalem builded here Among those dark Satanic mills?

Bring me my bow of burning gold! Bring me my arrows of desire! Bring me my spear! O clouds unfold! Bring me my Chariot of Fire! I will not cease from mental fight; Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand Till we have built Jerusalem In England's green and pleasant land.

Henry Wood (1869 - 1944)Fantasy on British Sea Songs Arr. Peter Lawson (b. 1950) VII. Home Sweet Home VIII. See, the conqu’ring hero comes IX. Rule Brittania

Home! Sweet home!’Mid pleasures and palaces though we may roam, Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home; A charm from the skies seems to hallow us there, Which, seek thro' the world, is ne'er met elsewhere. Home! Home! Sweet, sweet home! Be it ever so humble, there’s no place like home!

See, the Conqu’ring Hero ComesSee, the conqu'ring hero comes! Sound the trumpets, beat the drums.

Myrtle wreaths and roses twine, To deck the hero’s brow divine. See the god-like youth advance! Breathe the flutes and lead the dance! Sports prepare, the laurel bring, Songs of triumph to him sing.
