What is Presessional?

Presessional is a specialist academic English programme for foundation, undergraduate or postgraduate students who speak English as an additional language. Presessional develops your language competence in order to meet your main course English language requirements and helps you to progress onto your main course of study at University of the Arts London.

The Presessional programme is based on creative arts subjects and includes the skills you will need in order to study at university level.

Presessional has four different entry points depending on how much English language development you need before you start your UAL degree course. There is also a Pre-Foundation English programme, which helps students who will be starting a Foundation Diploma or Level 3 introduction course.

Which Presessional course should I take?

Why take one of our Presessional courses?Taking a Presessional course before you start your main undergraduate or post-graduate university course provides high quality, tailored preparation for your life and studies at university. It will help you to:• start experiencing university life in a comfortable and supportive

environment before your main course begins.• progress to your main UAL course without having to take

another English language test if you pass all of your Presessional assessments.

• learn about UAL academic culture and improve key 21st century skills such as critical thinking, collaboration and interaction with peers through exhibition reviews, group presentations and discussions.

• get to know London and learn more about British culture, and help you adjust to London and UK life.

• further develop your English language skills within the context of art, design, fashion and communication.

• become familiar with the facilities and resources available to you and give you the chance to visit other UAL colleges.

• build social relationships across UAL and to make new friends.

The Language Centre at University of the Arts London is a specialist teaching, training and assessment department located within the University. We are accredited by the British Council for the teaching of English and in our last inspection, strengths were noted in the areas of student administration, quality assurance, learning resources, academic staff profiles, academic management, course design, learner management, teaching and leisure opportunities. Our Presessional programme is also accredited by BALEAP (British Association of Lecturers in English for Academic Purposes) and received an excellent inspection report.
