The design separates the ‘wet’ and ‘dry’ sports areas in the building either side of a dramatic double-height foyer. This bisects the scheme providing the entrance to the facility at one end and an open lakeside viewing terrace to the other. The foyer area offers easy control of the facility from the reception and allows users to understand the facility layout. The pool building provides a shop front and landmark gateway building on the main approach road into the township of Killingworth at both day and night. The overall design, reminiscent of a bird wheeling in flight, was developed with the local community.

The Lakeside Centre represents an efficient and compact community wet and dry sports centre with a traditional mix of facilities. The scheme includes a 25 m pool, learner pool, 6 court sports hall, health and fitness suite, dance studio, meeting and club rooms, soft play area and a cafe / foyer area.

The design separates the ‘wet’ and ‘dry’ sports areas in the building either side of a dramatic double-height foyer. This bisects the scheme providing the entrance to the facility at one end and an open lakeside viewing terrace to the other. The foyer area offers easy control of the facility from the reception and allows users to understand the facility layout.

The pool building provides a shop front and landmark gateway building on the main approach road into the township of Killingworth at both day and night. The overall design, reminiscent of a bird wheeling in flight, was developed with the local community.

Killingworth Leisure Centre has exceeded all expectations for predicted user numbers. The fitness membership targets were met shortly after opening.

Circulation

The Lakeside Centre is designed to be compact with no redundant or wasted space and configured to optimise receptions overview of users as they move about the facility.

The scheme design is based around a highly efficient circulation pattern whereby all principle areas are accessed directly off the cafe foyer. There are no long corridors and the only enclosed corridor is the short route to the sport hall entrance foyer which provides access to the changing and meeting room.

The foyer provides direct access into the wet changing area, pool spectators, soft play, administration area, and to an external lakeside viewing deck.

An open stair and lift rise to a bridge across the foyer which provides access directly into the fitness suite. Access is gained to the studio from the fitness suite.

An open balcony to the pool hall provides access to the fitness changing and a further function room, and allows fitness users to access the pool via the end staircase.

The design facilitates excellent staff control, provides a safe environment and creates an attractive sense of visual movement and activity within the building.

General Accommodation / StandardsSwimming Pool 25 m pool x 13 m wide with 6 no. 2 m swimming

lanes and 0.5 m side margins. Fixed depth 1 m shallow end with slope to 2 m deep end. 7 x 13 m learner pool with a fixed depth of 0.9 m and easy going steps to the changing end.

Spectators An efficient arrangement of two rows of 70 no. tip-up spectator seating stepping down to pool surround level with an additional upstand bench to the front and a casual cafe terrace area.

Sports Hall Multi-purpose 6 court sports hall with a general clear height of 7.2 m and 9.1 m over the individual badminton courts.

Health and Fitness Suite 325 m2 fitness suite with 70 stations.

Multi-Function Rooms 9 x 12 m dance studio with 4.5 m clear height. 7 x 9 m meeting / club space used also for spin classes.

Meeting Room 70 m2 meeting room overlooking the lake.

Changing Area Wet changing village with group rooms and dry side changing.

Foyer and Circulation Double height with cafe, views to pool and bridge across.

Soft Play 120 m2 soft play area.

Offices Staff and managers office.

Egan’s Report issued the industry with a challenge to commit to change. North Tyneside Council embraced this challenge and abandoned the traditional tender led procurement route for capital works in favour of an improved approach. The strategic, non-contractual framework allows us to work together as a team to deliver the aims and objectives mutually agreed by those involved.
