With this edi-tion of TheLaker, we’re
proud to welcome 700Dade City families toweekly home delivery ofour newspaper.
If you live in thedowntown area, or in
subdivisions south of town along Fort KingRoad and Clinton Avenue, you most likelyfound today’s paper in your driveway, andcan look forward to receiving it everyWednesday.
In addition to this new home delivery,we’ll continue to distribute 2,000 Lakersevery week to 60 newspaper boxes, busi-ness locations and public buildings in theDade City - San Antonio area. InZephyrhills, we have another 130 outletsand 6,300 papers.
Adding circulation is a big deal in thenewspaper world, especially one that rep-resents a 35 percent jump in onecommunity, all in one week. And we do sowithout hesitation, and with much confi-dence, because Dade City readers andbusiness leaders have been asking forhome delivery of The Laker for some time.
So when The Tampa Tribune stoppedpublishing so suddenly and unexpectedlyin early May, we decided there was no bet-ter time than right now to add homedelivery in Dade City. With the help of thefine folks at The Greater Dade CityChamber of Commerce, we selected neigh-borhoods with demographics that matchedthose of newspaper readers, and decidedto take the plunge and add all 700 homesthe Chamber was recommending.
Our goal is to fill the void left behind bythe closing of The Tampa Tribune, which al-ways had a strong following in east Pasco.Earlier this year, we began to step up ourEast Pasco news coverage when we hiredKevin Weiss as a full-time reporter assignedto Zephyrhills, Dade City and San Antonio.
Kevin, a 2014 graduate of the Universityof South Florida, has the enthusiasm, ener-gy and passion about communityjournalism that make his stories easy toread and understand. He is a talented, hard-working young man I’m proud to employ, and one I hope you have an opportunity tomeet.
Joining Kevin in our East Pasco newscoverage is Kathy Steele, a seasoned jour-

Pasco County property values grew byabout $1.1 billion in 2015, according to taxestimates released by the Pasco CountyProperty Appraiser’s Office.
That’s about 5.2 percent higher than thecurrent tax roll and shows acceleratedgrowth, compared to the previous steadygrowth of 4 percent, year to year.
Much of the increase is being fueled bynearly $685 million in new residential andcommercial construction.
The southern half of Pasco, particularlyalong the State Road 54/State Road 56 corri-dor is driving the growth, said Wade Barber, chief deputy at Pasco County PropertyAppraiser’s office.
“I think it will continue to be so,” he said.“Nothing up north is really going gang-busters yet.”
County records reflect the rising values.Tampa Premium Outlets, which opened
with more than 90 stores in October 2015,currently is valued at about $98 million. Ayear earlier with only vacant land to assess, the county pegged the property’s taxablevalue at nearly $12 million.
Lowe’s on State Road 54 in Lutz jumpedfrom about $1.8 million in taxable value in2015 to about $8.8 million now, recordsshow. The home improvement store openedin April 2015.
More new housing construction is onthe way, including Bexley Ranch in Odessaand Union Station in Wesley Chapel. FloridaHospital Center Ice Complex in WesleyChapel is expected to open in October.
The upward trend in valuations couldcontinue, but Ward cautioned that state-im-posed caps on increases play a role inholding values down.
State law limits increases in valuations tono higher than 10 percent for commercial, nonresidential properties, and no more than3 percent for homesteaded properties.
“It really holds you to the 5 percentrange without new construction,” Barbersaid.
Overall, the boost in valuations spread to
Pasco’s cities as well.Estimated values and percentage increas-
es are: Zephyrhills, $609 million, a 1 percentincrease; Dade City, $265.7 million, a 2.1 per-cent increase; San Antonio, nearly $56million, a 3.2 percent increase; Port Richey,nearly $252 million, a .08 percent increase;and New Port Richey, $504 million, a .08percent increase.
The Town of St. Leo showed a modest in-crease of about $22,400 to an estimatedvalue of about $8.7 million. But, the town’sproperty values remain in the doldrumscompared to the nearly $10 million value in2014.
The town lost about 85 homes in theLake Jovita subdivision when Gov. RickScott signed a bill to de-annex the homes in2014. The homes were added to unincorpo-rated Pasco’s tax base.
Pasco property values on the rise
FILE PHOTOSCrowds gathered outside stores on opening day at Tampa Premium Outlets. The mall was partof nearly $685 million in new construction that is pushing up Pasco County’s property values.
Lowe’s home improvement store on StateRoad 54 is valued at about $18 million byPasco County Property Appraiser’s office, andhelped boost overall county property values.

Recreational vehicles and RV parks dotthe landscape of rural thoroughfares sur-rounding Dade City.
But, just north of the historic downtowndistrict, a very uncommon RV park is beingplanned. This project, an upscale RV gatedcommunity with amenities more oftenfound in pricey single-family home subdivi-sions, is moving toward development.
Hill Country Estates is at 17151 U.S. 301,atop one of Dade City’s rolling hills.
“It’s a pretty unusual project,” said JackBuckley, real estate solutions provider withExit Realty in Land O’ Lakes.
The site has 37 ready-to-build one-acrelots.
Construction on the first site is anticipat-ed within 45 days.
A standard feature will be a pull-throughRV garage. Buyers will have several floorplan options ranging from about 1,200square feet up to a more customized 5,000square feet.
There will be one-bedroom, one-bath;two-bedroom, two- bath; and three-bedroomand two-bath houses.
Amenities can include an observationdeck atop the garage, a pool house, gardenand courtyard. The base price will be about$505,000. There also would be fees for ahomeowner’s association.
“We like to think these would be a sec-ond residence,” said Buckley. Though for

AROUND THE PARKS
By Helene RubensteinGrand Horizons
Grand Horizons observed Memorial Dayin its community center on May 30. About85 people showed up for a luncheon. Thepicnic included chicken, cole slaw and pota-to salad, with ice cream for dessert. All thefood was provided by the social club.
A short music medley started off the cel-ebration that honored all the branches ofthe military. Following this, there was a mo-ment of silence for the deceased heroes. Then, of course, all the people that were inattendance sang “God Bless America.” Thislunch/picnic was hosted by Rich and ChrisFulton, and Terry and Mim Gardner, alongwith Tita Mauk helping out. There were alsopeople who helped with the setting up andcleaning up. Our thanks go out to all ofthem.
Since we were unavailable, I spoke toSandy Lindke and Chris Fulton. Between thetwo of them, I received the above informa-tion, plus the fact that flags were put upalong the sidewalk throughout the develop-ment to commemorate Memorial Day. Thiswas a day to celebrate and to go all out, andthat is exactly what Grand Horizons did.

Along, long time ago, in a coun-try far, far away, a newpresident’s secretary of statepresented her Russian counter-
part with what clever minds at FoggyBottom must have imagined was simple ge-nius: a “reset” button, symbolizing theObama administration’s desire for a freshstart between our nations.
We’ve seen how that worked out.Anyone seeking an enduring USA-Russia
reset needs to program his GPS for a low-slung block house off 20 Mile Level Road inLand O’ Lakes. There, amid the managedchaos and loving clutter of a makeshift fami-ly, is the nerve center of a genuineinternational coming-together.
Four boys from St. Petersburg, Russia, have spent their coming-of-age school yearshere under the guidance of transplantedHoosier Eric Wilson. And, they enjoyed value-added assistance from the village networkthat is nearby Academy at the Lakes, the lads’welcoming school.
The quartet — Gleb Barkovskiy, Maximand Tioma Stepanets and Daniil Shcherbinin— has shrunk, through graduation, to a duoof Tioma and Daniil. By late August, thehousehold will shrink again to Wilson andTioma, plus languid Sam, the rescue coon-hound mix. By then, Daniil, 18, will havebeen dispatched to Springfield, Ohio, andWittenberg University.
How are the other alumni doing?Barkovskiy, the son of a former Soviet nu-
clear submarine captain and a rising senior atBucknell, is interning at Goldman Sachs. Max
Stepanets is a rising sophomore at AlmaCollege in Michigan, where he’s a member ofthe football team and majoring in business.
As for Shcherbinin (“Sher-ben-in,” but forsimplicity’s sake, hereafter Daniil), he antici-pates a summer of unofficial occupations. Here on a restrictive student visa, this perfectprospect for stocking the top shelves atPublix — he’s 6 feet 5 — ruefully concedeshe can’t collect “a regular paycheck,” but heneeds to save for college expenses.
So he’ll mow lawns, paint houses, helpout with the household’s pooch-sitting oper-ation, “move really heavy furniture” and dowhatever other honest odd jobs come hisway. After all, if he’d wanted to be idle andtempted into troublemaking, he could havestayed in Russia.
That depressing prospect is the futureKaterina Ilina, a real estate agent in a perpet-ually tough market, was hoping her only
child could avoid when she presented himnearly 10 years ago for evaluation by an asso-ciate of the Renaissance Project.
The plan was to identify promising St.Petersburg boys and invite them to attend aposh private school in Boca Raton, wherethey would be groomed to become citizenambassadors for America back home.
Alas, the original plan soon collapsed. Bythen, however, Wilson wasn’t just on board,he’d become a passionate believer and theboys’ best advocate. Long story short, hefound a like-minded administrator atAcademy at the Lakes, and through a combi-nation of scholarships, fundraising schemes, donations, a generous landlord, philanthropicmedical professionals and stretching Wilson’steacher’s paycheck, they’ve made it work.(Read more about their efforts here:http://renproject.org.)
It hasn’t hurt that each of the Russianshas been an exemplary student and — asmuch as any teenager is capable — a modelcitizen. Daniil captained the football and bas-ketball teams, served as student body vicepresident and played Mr. Darling in theschool’s springtime production of “PeterPan” — notably, without attempting a Britishaccent.
The amateur thespian explains: “When Itry to do an English accent, my Russian reallycomes out.” (Not that he hasn’t waxed the
Volga boatman when it might charm anAmerican girl, or get him out of a tight spotwith a teacher, he concedes.)
Otherwise, looking for highlights in aneventful senior year, two stand out: First, theMarch afternoon he learned he’d been ac-cepted, with generous underwriting, atWittenberg. Second, the recent two weekshe spent here, with his mom, duringKatarina’s first visit to America.
What did she learn? Americans are un-commonly welcoming to newcomers.“Everyone is so friendly,” she says. “Everyonewants to hug.” Maybe, she says, it’s theresidue from Stalin, an era of suspicion, butRussians are rarely so open to strangers.
Experiencing it for herself, Katarina cameto appreciate how this kid from a factory dis-trict —where V.I. Lenin once lectured oncommunism — had become upbeat andopen-hearted, phonetically, “dobriy” inRussian. What a contrast to his somber, pes-simistic peers back home.
Here she saw real evidence of that elusivereset. And, for those back home who frettheir countryman has gone native, not toworry. When he’s not fetching and lifting thissummer, Daniil will be immersed in Russianliterature, Mikhail Bulgakov’s fantasy parable,“The Master and Margarita.”
“I am proud to be Russian,” he says flatly.“I never want to lose that.” Neither does any-one else in the Renaissance Project. They likehim just the way he’s turned out.
And, so this happened. On the day of theopen house on 20 Mile Level Road, whenteachers and friends came to celebrateDaniil’s graduation, they brought presents forhim, and for Katarina.
Gifts for the graduate Katarina under-stood. But for her? Why? “We brought yougifts,” explained one of the moms, her eyesshining, “because you shared your gift —your only son — with us.”
They hugged and wept happy tears.Because that’s what moms, wherever they’refrom, do.
It’s from such embraces, real, lasting resetsemerge.
Tom Jackson, a resident of New Tampa,is interested in your ideas. To reach him, email [email protected].

PREVENT HEAT-RELATED CAR DEATHS
Each year in the United States, an averageof 38 children and hundreds of dogs diefrom hyperthermia (heatstroke) in hot cars.
At 70 degrees on a sunny day, a car canreach 100 degrees within 15 minutes. Bodytemperatures for children and dogs rise threeto five times faster than an adult’s, and braindamage can occur in a matter of minutes.
Reduce the risk through A.C.T.:• AVOID heatstroke-related injury and
death by never leaving your child alone inthe car, not even for a minute. Be sure tokeep your car locked when you are not in it,so kids don’t climb in on their own.

41,000 LBS.Lost In 10 Years!
In the 10 years that Gerri Willetand her family have owned Medi-Weightloss in Lutz, they have assist-ed several thousand patients loseapproximately 41,000 pounds.
“It is very rewarding knowingwe’ve helped so many peoplebecome healthier,” said Gerri.“Although everyone wants to loseweight to look better, we believe themost important aspects are improv-ing our patients’ health and addingyears to their life.”
This month, Gerri and her staff ofhealth care professionals are cele-brating the clinic’s 10th anniversary, including an open house hosted bythe Wesley Chapel and CentralPasco chambers of commerce.
“In addition to celebrating withthe business community, we areinviting the public to stop by andtour our facility,” said Gerri. “Wegenuinely want people to see ourclean, comfortable offices, meet ourstaff and learn about a weight lossprogram that really works.”
Visitors don’t need to worryabout being pressured.
“We know people are most suc-cessful at losing weight when theydecide it’s time to take action,” saidGerri. “We just want to educatefolks, so when they are ready to loseweight, they know we’re in theirneighborhood.”
Medi-Weightloss is located onS.R. 54 at Oak Grove Boulevard, just east of the Ferman Auto dealer-ship. It has been at this location forall 10 years because it is convenientto people living in Lutz, Land O’
Lakes and Wesley Chapel.“Our location may be the same,
but not our program,” said Gerri. “Inthe past 10 years, there have beenmany, many positive changes andadditions because of all the researchour company conducts,” said Gerri. These include:• Pharmaceutical-grade supplements• Informative tip sheets and easy-to-use food calendar• Full-time nutritionist • Low-calorie, healthy recipes• High-quality, prepacked foods, including nutrition bars, shakes, soups, meal replacements and sugar-free candies• Interactive website with a patient portal• Inexpensive exercise equipment that’s easy to use at home and work
The one constant at Medi-Weightloss is its physician-super-vised program. Because weight lossimpacts every aspect on a person’sbody, Medi-Weightloss has alwaysemployed physicians to work withpatients.
“We have a medical doctor onsite most days, and patients can con-sult with a doctor anytime theywant,” said Gerri. “This is whattruly sets us apart from other weightloss clinics.”
A typical patient at Medi-Weightloss loses 35 pounds, Gerrisaid. “And, because your lifespanincreases by one-and-a-half yearsfor every 10 pounds you lose, mostof our patients will live an additionalfive years!”

The initial goal is to sell at least half ofthe existing lots, and then expand, Buckleyadded.
The project’s location is centrally located

But, Buckley said there also is plenty hap-pening now and in the future in Dade City.Potential projects could include a new golfcourse and a boutique hotel, he said.
The Publix grocery store that opened inlate 2015 at the corner of U.S. 301 andClinton Avenue is also a plus. It’s a shortdrive from Hill Country Estates.
“That’s a big feature for us, because yearsago where would people go to do theirshopping?” Buckley said.

Eden Shireen is making a name for her-self in the local music scene.
Thousands of YouTube views for hercover songs and the March release of herfive-song ‘Shadows’ EP (Extended Play) havemade the 20-year-old Land O’ Lakes singer-songwriter an up-and-coming artist.
Her popularity has been steadily increas-ing since she became a 2015 FloridaGRAMMY Showcase semifinalist, thathelped to propel her career.
Shireen, a 2014 graduate of Land O’ LakesHigh School, describes her musical style as a“clash between pop, indie and folk.”
That unique style was formed during herhigh school years, when she was heavily in-volved in her school’s choir and theaterprograms.
“I was about 14 or 15 when I started towrite short stories and poems, and then Igot involved in musical theater...and I waslike, ‘Oh, my poems are literally just songs.’Then I started the whole writing process, and it was great,” Shireen said. “I really foundmy voice through acting and realized, ‘Wow,I love doing this.’”
Listening to alternative bands likeBleachers, Of Monsters and Men, The 1975and First Aid Kit were major influences dur-ing her formative high school years whenshe started creating music.
“I started to not just listen to what wason the radio,” she said. “Being a musician, you want to find what’s going to inspire youthe most, so I really just dove into Pandora(Internet Radio) and Spotify, and any differ-ent kind of playlists I could find.”
She continued, “I always grew up listen-ing to great music in my house with myfamily. I knew who The Sundays and TheCranberries were before anybody else.”
As she manages her burgeoning music ca-reer, Shireen is working toward an associatedegree at Pasco-Hernando State College, be-fore she relocates to Orlando to enroll in theUniversity of Central Florida’s EntertainmentManagement degree program.
She plays a lot of shows in Tampa, includ-ing the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, but Orlando appears to be more ideal loca-tion for generating more buzz about herwork.
“Land O’ Lakes and Tampa do not havethe kind of music scene that I knew how tojump into when I first started getting intomusic, and the Orlando music scene ismuch younger—the teen crowd, teenbands, early 20s bands,” she said.
Meanwhile, Shireen is working with localvenues on an EP release show around mid-June, and then plans to embark on a musictour throughout the state.
Someday, Shireen hopes to be able to cre-ate a full-length album. For the time being, though, she’s content with sharing hermusic through short EPs.
“The cool thing about writing EPs is you’rereally developing your sound, developing sto-ries that you want to tell,” Shireen explained.“You’re building an audience and you kind ofcreate a feeling on longing — people wantmore, people are going to connect with youon one level. Writing a record is financially alittle bit of a hit with studio time, and I wantto find the right people that can really helpme craft my sound even more.”
Jotting down lyrics and creating music isa constant for the young artist, whethershe’s in the recording studio, relaxing athome, or even out shopping with friends.
“Making music for me is a relief of somekind. It’s the most satisfying feeling onceyou finish a song and you’re like, ‘Wow, I re-ally believe in this’...and other people aregoing to relate to this. It’s a very powerfulfeeling knowing that you can impact peoplein what hopes to be a very positive way.”
Despite Shireen’s eclectic sound and hergrowing popularity locally, she still feels thatone of the biggest challenges ahead is devel-oping more of a widespread audience.
“There’s a lot of music out there, there’sa lot of talented musicians, and there’s a lotof very powerful people who have thepower to change your life if they hear you.
But, having those people hear you, and hav-ing people really turn their heads and lookat you, sometimes it can be the biggest chal-lenge, because there is so much music allover the Internet.
“It is just a challenge being heard.”But, that challenge doesn’t discourage
her from living out her dream, and encour-aging other aspiring artists to do the same.
“Never discredit that little voice inside ofyou that says to do it,” she said. “Believe inwhat you write...and don’t let anybody elsediminish what you created.
“If you want to become an artist, justhave that self-belief and that passion inknowing whatever you create is original, and you have the power to make it some-thing.”
“Shadows” is available for download andstreaming on iTunes, Google Play, Amazon,Spotify and Apple Music.

A closer look at Eden ShireenIN THIS CONVERSATION WITH EDENSHIREEN, THE SINGER-SONGWRITER FROMLAND O’ LAKES:
Shares how her interest developed insinging and songwriting
“I think that always being an avidreader and always knowing that storieswere a place where magic kind of hap-pens. I always loved reading otherpeople’s stories, and feeling a little bit likean outsider in school...I was just kind of inmy own world, and from there I wrote. Itwas a place where I could find my ownsolace and I found myself.”
Describes her musical style“I think it’s definitely eclectic. Kind of
every song is going to have a different un-dertone to it, but I’m definitely pop. I like tosay I’m a little bit indie and folk becausemy voice isn’t all completely pop — withthe way the inflections are in some of thesongs, so I think it’s a clash between pop, indie and folk.”
Explains what inspires her song ideas“I think there’s a story within everything,
whether it’s a little bird that we see takinga bath in a puddle, or the wind blowing ina certain way. ...I just enjoy believing insomething that’s so much bigger than my-self that isn’t exactly tangible. It’s the idea Ican grow it into whatever I choose...and Ihave the power to manifest it in a waywhere other people are going to under-stand.”
Shares her writing process for her‘Shadows’ EP
“I started writing it in the end of 2013and I finished the record in June 2015, but Itook a little time to figure out how I want-ed to come out with it — what the titletrack should be, how I wanted to structurethe photo shoot, all of that. For all of thesongs and the singles— and how am Igoing to work to design it — I really tookmy time on the after-effects of writing theEP. But, it did take about two years to writethe record, and about six months afterthat to get to a good place to put mysongs out there.”
Talks about ‘Stick Around,’ one of herfavorites on ‘Shadows’ EP
“It’s a single from the record, and I likethe message of the song. I had written thewhole album from a sad place, and I wascoming out of a very toxic situation withsomeone. For me, the whole idea of therecord and the title being ‘Shadows’ is...theidea that it’s darkness, it’s hidden, you’replaying with shadows and you’re hiding —all of these different kind of themes areplaying throughout the whole record. But,when you get to the song “Stick Around” atthe very end, it’s about feeling empow-ered. ...Ending with that song definitelyleaves an impression on how you can de-velop, even in your darkest moments.”

Justin Dargahi has a penchant for knock-ing down 3-point shots.
So much so that he holds the GuinnessWorld Record for the most 3s made fromNBA range (23 feet, 9 inches) in one minute.
Firing three after three inside the Land O’Lakes High School gymnasium, Dargahiknocked down 26 treys in 60 seconds onJan. 4, breaking the previous set mark of 25.His feat became an official Guinness WorldRecord in early May.
“I’ve always been the best shooter on myteam in school,” said Dargahi, the head JV(Junior Varsity) coach for the Land O’ Lakesgirls basketball team and former basketballplayer at Cambridge Christian School.“Shooting was always easy to me.”
The skill comes so easily for Dargahi thathe claims he makes anywhere from 75 per-cent to 80 percent of 3-pointers he attemptswhen he’s “just shooting around for fun.”
He figures he can make about 95 percentof his free throw attempts, too.
“Anytime I was on a (school) team, Iwould always be the technical free-throwshooter,” said Dargahi, who began playing or-ganized hoops at 11 years old. “I had a greenlight to shoot 3s most of the time. It was al-ways like, ‘If we need a three, let’s get(Dargahi) the ball or set a screen for him.’
“In games, I would show off sometimesshooting 10 feet behind the (3-point) line,”he said.
Out of curiosity, the JV coach decided tolook into some of the timed 3-point records afew years ago. When he saw some of therecord totals, he realized he might have a de-cent chance at knocking down some ofthem.
“When I saw that record of 25, I was like,‘I could get that,’” Dargahi said, with an air ofconfidence in his voice.
On his first attempt at the record, henailed 18 shots.
While impressive for most, Dargahi knewhe could shoot at a much higher clip.
“I had a lot of bad luck; I had one of myfriends helping me, and we weren’t clicking,”Dargahi said. “It just wasn’t scripted toowell.”
To better organize a record-breaking strat-egy, Dargahi reckoned his best chance was toenlist the help of some of his JV roster atLand O’ Lakes.
About eight or nine of his players aidedDargahi by fetching loose balls and rapidlyhanding them to him at the top of the three-point arc as he continually fired from deeprange.
The strategy worked, as he eventually
knocked down 26 shots after a January JVpractice.
“It was still kind of shocking when he gotit,” sophomore Land O’ Lakes JV captainClaire Valeski said.
“We were all happy and all thought hewould get it, but then again, it’s one of thosethings that’s like the luck of the draw,” shesaid.
Dargahi’s shooting philosophy was fixat-ed on conserving energy.
“If I’m not on a great pace, I would stop.If I only have five or six (made 3s) after 20seconds, instead of consume all my energy, Iwould just stop,” he said.
He also uses his arms more than his legs.Dargahi admits he wished he could’ve
put the record out of reach — perhaps mak-ing 29 or 30 3-pointers — knowing full wellhe may have to attempt the endeavor all overagain if someone surpasses his current markof 26.
While a prolific shooter during his highschool career at Cambridge Christian,Dargahi didn’t receive much interest fromcollege coaches.
“It’s hard when you’re 6 feet to play big-time college basketball, even if you are thebest shooter,” said Dargahi, a 2007 graduateof the University of South Florida (USF). “Iprobably should’ve practiced on other stufflike dribbling and my defense.”
Instead, Dargahi settled for playing intra-murals at USF, and occasionally enteredshooting contests — which he typically won.
The love of the game and high-pressurecompetition led him into coaching, where hesaid he enjoys watching his players matureand develop their skills over the course of aseason.
Despite his proclivity for making shots,Dargahi said he doesn’t particularly work with
his JV players on their shooting technique.“It’s hard for me to see through their
eyes, because to me, it’s so easy,” he said. “Ican’t get along their thought process, so I’mprobably not the best shooting teacher.”
But, that doesn’t stop him from giving hisplayers a few tips along the way.
“I would tell people: ‘Don’t worry aboutyour form.’ The best shooters — a lot of themhave weird form,” Dargahi said, noting thatformer NBA great Reggie Miller would crosshis arms during his 3-point attempts. “I thinkform is totally overrated; I think (settingyour) feet is more important. Do whateveryou’re comfortable with.”
Dargahi doesn’t plan to end his shootingrecord quest anytime soon. The Land O’Lakes hoops coach also has his eyes set onbreaking the record for most made freethrows in one minute (52) and the most 3-pointers made in two minutes (44).

Swimmers were splashing aroundthe pool at the Land O’ LakesRecreation Complex, enjoying the
facility which recently received a $90,000makeover.
Some adult swimmers swam laps, whilesome kids received instruction from CoachRobin Hilgenberg.
A little while later, others joined in, tak-ing a refreshing dip on a scorching hot day.
Normally, the pool is open in time forMemorial Day holiday, but this year it was-n’t, because of delays on the project toupgrade the pool.
Besides resurfacing the pool, and repaint-ing the deck, the pool’s shower facilitieswere improved, too.
The last time the pool had been resur-faced was during the 1990s.
Jordan Wheeler, a head lifeguard at thepool, said the improvements are noticeable.
“If you go in there, it feels a lot better onyour feet. There were some holes on thebackside over there, that got completelymended,” he said.
It looks better, too, he said.“The water, now, is a lot more blue,” said
Wheeler, who is working at the pool forhis third season.
The pool has a capacity for 150 guests, but typically doesn’t get that crowded, hesaid, noting the most he’s seen there at onetime was about 120.
A number of summer camps visit the
pool, and the kids seem to enjoy them-selves.
“It gets rowdy, that’s for sure,” he said. The pool’s upgrades were done prima-
rily in the off-season, he said.“We were only closed for about a week
and a half in the time that we’d normallybe open,” Wheeler said. “It was less than op-timal that we didn’t get to open onMemorial Day. Usually, a lot of people wantto come by. It’s practically the first day ofsummer. People want to go out and spendtheir day out at the pool.”
“We’re really excited to have this facilitycleaned up a little bit, because last year itwas kind of in sad shape,” said KristanyFitzthum, supervisor at the site.
With the repair work completed,Fitzthum hopes people will take advantageof the pool.
“I don’t think many people know thatwe’re open. Our first day, we had four peo-ple here. Yesterday, we had 12 or 13,” shesaid.
To make matters worse, there was light-ning on both afternoons, which meant theyhad to clear the pool.
When lightning is within a 10-mile ra-dius of the pool, it is cleared for a half-hourbefore swimmers can return, Fitzthum said.
The price of admission is reasonable,Fitzthum noted. The daily charge for swim-ming is $4 for adults and $3 for children.Passes also are available. A family of four, with two adults and two children, is $120;an adult pass is $80, and a child’s pass is$60.
“The New Port Richey RecreationCenter, it’s $7 to get in and swim, per per-
son,” Fitzthum said.Another advantage at the Land O’ Lakes
complex is that there’s an adults’ only hourfrom 11 a.m. to noon, she said.
The pool temperature is kept at 80 de-grees to 83 degrees.
“Most of the people who come here arereally local. Most of our people who comeare regulars. So, we can form really good re-lationships with them. We know all of themby name,” Fitzthum said.
Nancy and Bernie Guss, who live inPlantation Palms, are both retired fromPasco County Schools.
They began using the pool when itopened, and their now-grown daughter wasa member of a swim team there.
“We can do our yard work in the morn-ing, and then just come over here in theafternoon and relax,” Nancy Guss said. “I’mlooking forward to seeing what kind ofclasses they offer. I hope they have a varietyof classes,” she said.
Marie Berghoefer, who was doing laps, said she’s been swimming at the pool for 10years. A lifelong swimmer, she said she en-joys coming to the pool and will be there asoften as she can be this summer.
Carrie Kukuda, also of Land O’ Lakes, wasswimming laps, too.
She said she appreciates the conven-ience of the pool, not only for herself but formembers of the triathlon team from Get AGrip Total Fitness, where she is the owner, trainer and head coach.
As Coach Hilgenberg taught her class, some parents looked on.
Debbie Fisher has two kids — 13-year-old Tyler Esenberg and 11-year-old Kayla
Esenberg — in the class, and LarisaCurbelo’s son, Nick, is taking it, too.
“This is their first day,” said Fisher, wholives in Lake Padgett. “They want to try outfor high school swim. They want to beready,” Fisher said. Tyler is going into eighthgrade, and Kayla will be in seventh.
“They learned how to swim in CoachRobin’s backyard when they were young,”Fisher said, but they don’t swim competi-tively, and they want to learn the propertechniques.
She was glad they were there.“They look happy,” Fisher said.Curbelo, who lives in Wilderness Lake
Preserve, said her 12-year-old son is “big intofitness now.”
She’s impressed by the pool at the LandO’ Lakes complex.
“It’s a beautiful pool,” she said.“It’s great that they have somewhere to
go,” Curbelo added. The pool is open Tuesdays through
Sunday. It opens at 11 a.m. on weekdays, andcloses at 6 p.m. It opens at 11 a.m. on week-ends, and closes at 7 p.m.
