CALENDAR OF EVENTS - 2012
THANKS. . .for THIRTY years of 4th of July MEMORIES!!!
...to the OHM Family
Ken - Karen & Judy Ohm A hearty THANKS!!! to the entire OHM CLAN for their dedication and commitment to make the 4th of July a “family-fun” event for all lake residents!
I recently asked Karen if she’d be willing to jot down some “highlights” of the Wapo Runs over the past 30 years. Here’s her story ...
“The races began from a conversation I had with Kathy Mortensen at the Marina one day. I was in high school and running on the track team, and it sounded like a good idea to me to host a race on the 4th of July. After getting my usual treats at the Marina, I let my parents know the plans and how they were going to help!! For the past 30 years, my dad, Ken, has been at the 1-mile mark and my mom, Judy, has been out on the 10km course, both hand-ing out water to the runners. The first race was held at Mort’s Marina and 69 runners participated. I had ribbons and certificates for winners and my mom found door prizes at garage sales that were “cabin themed” like s’more fixings in baskets, beach towels and floating rafts. Ron Friese at the Home Base Bar donated loads of candy to give away. The second year we added t-shirts, with help from Milt

Phantom’s 2012 Splash 3 Strange ... But TRUE
This really happened last week at the Waterside landing…no kidding…and it was so bizarre that we couldn’t figure out how to caption it. According to witnesses who told us the story, Some oy oy (dyslexic for yo yo) backed his old semi tractor into the water to demonstrate how the diesel engine could operate under water. He pulled it out and decided to demo it again. Only this time he got stuck. Four tow trucks couldn’t pull it out. So here’s the way our headline and copy thinking went:
1. Sir, you do know there’s free parking in the lot.
2. The truck launching event is NEXT week.
3. Did you come through the Bear Trap Wapo channel to get here?
4. Wapo considering underwater diesel plant.
5. ECONOMIC NEWS: We know GM is almost under water, but…
6. A little more to the left.
7. “Hey…you in the boat…got any beer?” As far as we’re concerned, Waterside’s food is so good, they really don’t need to provide entertainment.
GOOCH GIVES UP MUSKIE HUNT ...…Corky Roehl has not only taken over Gooch’s townhouse but he’s taken over his quest for “Old Mister White Eyes,” John’s mysterious Muskie. John rather fashioned himself the Captain Ahab of Wapogasset. As far as we’re concerned, John may have related better to Old White Eyes than alot of people. We’ll see how Corky turns out. Apparently Corky trolls with along line tipped with corn cobs, sometimes small rodents and occasionally, salted nut rolls. The nut roll deal may be a clue.
IF YOU WANT TO CATCH A MUSKIE… Get yourself a big thick rod, a heavy-duty reel, twenty-five pound test line, a long steel leader and

9:45pmIn 1988 ... WBT residents lit flares from shore to shore and enjoyed seeing our lakes “GLOW” for the
very first time. It took thousands of flares and the cooperation of every homeowner to make this happen and WOW ... was it spectacular! At 9:45 tuesday evening, we’ll be “lighting-up” to celebrate the “25” year of Light-Up-The-Lake ... let’s do it up GOOD!!!
Here’s how ... Plan to line your shore with flares - they’re avail-•
able now from your shore trustee or at Mort’s until 7pm on the 3rd ... or until SOLD OUT. Cost $2/each
Please ... wait until 9:45 to light your flares - •lighting early only causes confusion and diminishes the effect of a united light-up. If you have extra flares please burn them late ... not early.
Be creative ... additional white mini lights on •trees/railings/porches are a beautiful “extra touch”.
Be SAFE ... if you plan to tour the lake during the •Light-Up, please ask your neighbor to watch your flares and be sure to follow the safety precautions on P.6.
Enjoy ... FIREWORKS... immediately fol-lowing the “Light-Up”. This spectacular display can be seen from almost every shore on WBT, but are shot from the Bible Camp peninsula. Just sit-back and ENJOY ... it’s a memory-maker!!! Raindate: July 6th

BOAT PARADE 3:00p.m.
Start planning today ... then decorate your boat - pontoon - or anything else that floats! Whether it’s an elaborate theme or just a few rolls of crepe paper and balloons, it’s sure to be a memory-maker for the kids! Gather in Marina Bay just before 3:00. No need to follow any order, just follow the band ... and be sure your “entry number” is displayed so it’s vis-ible from shore. The route goes counter-clockwise along Rumpca Drive, crosses over past the YMCA Camp t Breezy Point - past Garfield Park and the judge’s station and disperses at the narrows.
Trophies and gift certificates to Mort’s and Water-side will be awarded for top floats. Wiinners will be notified within 24 hours of the parade.

The OHM family .... tiny tots when the races began ... NOW adults with tiny tots of their own!
Sunde. I designed the first few shirts, then various relatives took over that task. As a family, we have many photos of the runs - with the generation below me lined up in chronological order. We have around 25 kids each year pose in the same spot. It’s fun to see the once-toddlers in now holding their own children in the photo.
Russ Miller, Wapo resident, used to display all the t-shirts hanging in order in their living room over the 4th of July!
The Kid’s dashes and turtle races are added about 5 yrs. later. Mort’s Marina added “minnow races” about that time as well. In 2000, when the Marina was re-located, the races were moved to the YMCA camp. Milt Sunde and his band started entertain-ing the masses with festive tunes including the National Anthem to send off the runners. We have really gotten fancy in the last few years with park-ing attendants, printed race number and waivers! Participation in the Runs has increased every year. Last year we had over 280 runners and 100 kids in the dashes - and at least that many turtles! All my helpers are volunteer neighbors and relatives.
One year we tried to have the Runs on the weekend BEFORE the Fourth and ended up hosting it twice! On the morning of the 4th, a large group of run-

OUR READERS ASK… Bear Trap medicine man, Paul Elbing, asks, “Is there any other way than your purple worm thing to catch Bass this time of summer?” Sure, Paul. Try a tube jig over the weed tops…maybe a dark, marbly one. Or fish a jig and a pig (dark skirted jig, like purple with a black, twin-tailed pork rind) and bounce it off the bottom. If that doesn’t work, try the purple worm thing.

I look forward to the “4th” ... but really enjoy the “5th” of July also.” Thanks for the memories ... Karen
