Lafayette is a place of academic excellence and opportunity, where every student can realize his or her full potential. Four years of The Lafayette Experience means discovery both in and out of the classroom, through student-centered, active-learning that combines the highest academic standards with diverse extracurricular programs. Lafayette graduates are prepared for success and leadership from one of the nation’s most academically competitive and respected institutions.

the lafayette experience consists of four key elements:

n student-focused teaching and mentoring by an exceptionally qualified faculty, committed to each student’s success.

Student-focused teaching, mentoring, and academic excellence are the top priorities of the faculty at Lafayette. Undergraduate research, directed by fully involved and supportive faculty, is a priority and a key component in the primary teaching mission. Lafayette’s faculty make deep professional and personal commitments to the success of their students in relationships that can last a lifetime. Faculty members hold the Ph.D. or highest equivalent degree in their field.

n a challenging, broad-based academic curriculum that offers strong programs in the arts, sciences, and engineering.

Lafayette’s approach to teaching and learning goes well beyond traditional classroom methods. Through active-learning experiences in small-group seminars, student-centered team projects, independent study, and student/faculty research, students have the opportunity to cross academic boundaries in the arts and sciences and engineering. Students study abroad, participate in work/study experiential learning opportunities, and hold externships with alumni and internships in government, industry and many other fields.

n a small college community with large college resources.Major financial resources make superb facilities and exceptional academic programs available to all students. Lafayette’s close-knit residential campus, which is consistently referred to as one of the most beautiful in the nation, creates an atmosphere conducive to learning and achieving one’s goals. Also integral to The Lafayette Experience is the strong support the College receives from its global network of loyal alumni.

n a friendly residential community offering an exciting social life with a broad spectrum of extracurricular activities.

Whether you are a campus visitor or a member of the Lafayette family, friendliness and civility characterize the campus scene. Lafayette’s diverse student body provides an enriching social and cultural experience. With more than 200 student groups and special activities, students can explore new areas of interest and numerous opportunities for leadership and personal growth, including participation in 23 Division I intercollegiate sports as well as intramurals, a variety of on-campus cultural enrichment programs, a broad range of living groups marked by special-interests, and fraternities and sororities.

Lafayette College has a proud tradition of excellence in athletics, both on the playing field and in the classroom. Currently in its 129th year of intercollegiate athletic competition, Lafayette has always competed against the biggest and best in the Northeast and across the nation. Lafayette competes in 23 varsity sports, an usually high level of athletic activity for a college its size. Although the school ranks among the smallest at the Division I level (FCS in football), Lafayette produces highly

competitive teams that consistently compete for Patriot League championships and NCAA Tournament bids.

The Leopards have won 75 team championships in the past two decades. A charter member of the Patriot League, which was established in 1990, Lafayette has already captured 38 conference titles.

Lafayette student-athletes are also impressive in the classroom as 68 percent achieved a 3.0 grade-point average (GPA) or higher in 2007-08. Last academic year, 243

Lafayette student-athletes were named to the Patriot League’s Academic Honor Roll for having at least a 3.2 GPA and earning a varsity letter.

In 2008, the Lafayette baseball team recorded its third straight winning season. The Leopards also captured their second straight Liberty Bell Classic title with a victory over Lehigh. Off the field, 15 players were named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, the most ever in head coach Joe Kinney’s tenure.

bud Martin Faculty Mentor

Bud Martin, professor of Chemical Engineering, is in

his 33rd year at Lafayette and sixth as the mentor of Lafayette’s baseball team. Martin fulfills several roles as a faculty advisor, including serving as a link between academics and athletics, promoting the mutual understanding between faculty and coaches and providing an additional advising resource for student-athletes.

Some classes Martin teaches at Lafayette are Introduction to Engineering, Nature of Engineering Materials and Polymers. He received his bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Lafayette, where he graduated with cum laude distinction in 1966. Martin went on to obtain his Ph. D. in Chemical Engineering-Polymer Materials Program from Princeton University in 1972 and completed his thesis, “Amorphous Polyolefins: The Relationship Between Molecular Submolecular Motion and Mechanical Behavior.”

Martin began his teaching career at his alma mater in 1976 as an assistant professor and in 1980 was elevated to associate

professor. In 2002, he became a professor at the college. Martin also currently serves as a visiting Senior Scientist at the Textile Research Institute in Princeton, an organization he began working for in 1971. He is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Tau Beta Pi and Phi Beta Kappa.

Some of Martin’s most memorable moments as a mentor to the baseball team include serving on two honors thesis committees for members of the team and also being in the dugout for the Leopards’ 2007 Patriot League championship game victory. Martin currently resides in Easton, Pa., with his wife, Linda. The couple has one son, Eric.

CoAChing STAFFJoe Kinney Head Coach

Joe Kinney enters his 10th season as the head coach at Lafayette, a program he has built into a

winner. Since taking over in 1999, Kinney has continuously raised the talent level to the point where Lafayette is consistently in contention for a Patriot League title. The 2008 campaign was another winning one for the Leopards, as they finished with an overall record of 25-23, marking the third straight winning season for Lafayette. The 2007 season was one for the record books, as the Leopards recorded a program-best 33 wins, including 17 Patriot League victories, and advanced to the NCAA Regional. The team’s performance that season earned Kinney his first-ever Patriot League Coach of the Year honor. The success of 2007 came on the heels of a highly successful 2006 season in which the Leopards posted 27 wins, the second-highest win total in Lafayette history.

Under Kinney, Lafayette has advanced to the Patriot League Tournament in four of the previous seven seasons and boasted 42 All-Patriot League selections and two Patriot League Players of the Year (Adam Rosenberg ’04, Vince D’Angelis ’02).

In 2004, Lafayette advanced past the first round of the Patriot League Tournament for the first time in program history after defeating Lehigh in the opening round and went on to face Army in the three-game Championship Series.

That season, the Leopards finished with a 23-26 mark and went 11-9 in conference play. In 2002, Kinney and the team had a breakthrough 23-22 record in what was then the program’s first 20-win season in 10 years. The team won a then-school record 12 Patriot League games and made its first-ever appearance in the league tournament.

Kinney has been instrumental in securing major renovations to Lafayette’s baseball facilities. In 2008, the baseball field was renamed Kamine Stadium and 2004 renovations made to the stadium included the addition of a grandstand with chairback seats and bleachers, a press box and the expansion

and refurbishment of both dugouts. Other improvements included a new scoreboard, outfield fence and warning track, new infield mix and a shelter in the Lafayette bullpen.

Prior to Lafayette, Kinney was the top assistant at Navy from 1992-99, helping guide the Midshipmen to four Patriot League titles and two NCAA East Regional appearances. His responsibilities included serving as the hitting and defensive coach, facility manager for the baseball complex, equipment manager and director of the Navy Baseball Camp.

Before Navy, Kinney was an assistant coach at Lehigh from 1990-92 where he was the hitting, defense and conditioning coach. While there, he completed his master’s degree in Secondary Education. Kinney’s time at Lehigh followed a stint at Columbia High School in his hometown of Maplewood, N.J. where he was the junior varsity baseball coach and freshman football coach.

Kinney graduated from Lehigh in 1988 with a degree in Economics. He enjoyed a four-year career and served as captain of the 1987 and 1988 squads. Kinney and his wife, former Susan Pitman, reside on College Hill with daughters Annelise and Alexis.

CoAChing STAFFGreg Durrah Assistant Coach

Gregg Durrah has been with Joe Kinney every season at Lafayette. Durrah

works primarily with the pitching staff, while also assisting with recruiting.

Prior to Lafayette, Durrah was an assistant coach at Easton High School from 1992-99 following stints as an assistant coach at Rutgers-Newark and Fairleigh Dickinson. Durrah graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson in 1987 with a bachelor’s degree in Business Management following a four-year baseball career.

He currently works as a probation officer for Northampton County and is also in the Marine Corps Reserve where he has a rank of gunnery sergeant. He is also a Division I college basketball official. Durrah and his wife, Kendra, have two children, Sydney and Trey, and reside in Palmer Township, Pa. Trey has served as the team’s bat boy for several seasons.

Rick Clagett Assistant Coach

Rick Clagett begins his third season on the Lafayette staff. He joined the

Leopards from Villanova, where he spent five years as the program’s top assistant coach. Clagett serves as the pitching coach and is also responsible for coordinating recruiting efforts.

At Villanova, Clagett served as the pitching coach and recruiting and admissions coordinator. He was the director of the Wildcats’ camps, served as travel coordinator and assisted in the team’s booster proceedings.

Prior to Villanova, he worked for his alma mater, Utah, where his tasks included recruiting and admissions duties, as well as daily efforts with the pitching staff. As an undergraduate, Clagett was a standout pitcher, serving as the team captain in 1998. As a senior, he was among the team leaders with six victories. In 1997, Clagett’s 10 wins

led the team, placing him one shy of tying the school record. He was instrumental in leading the Utes to the WAC Northern Division Championship.

A Las Vegas native, Clagett earned his bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Utah in 1999. He and his wife Jill currently reside in Bethlehem.

brandt Godshalk Assistant Coach

Brandt Godshalk enters his second season as an assistant

coach with Lafayette. Godshalk, a Bangor, Pa. native, came to College Hill with 13 years of coaching experience at the high school level. He served as the freshman coach at Phillipsburg (N.J.) from 2004-07, a post he also held from 1999-2001.

Godshalk was also the assistant varsity baseball coach at Phillipsburg in 2003, working primarily with the pitchers and catchers and spent 2002 as the junior varsity coach. He is in his ninth year as a health and physical education teacher at Phillipsburg. Prior to Phillipsburg, he spent three seasons (1995-98) as the junior varsity baseball coach at Belvidere High School (N.J.).

A veteran of the Blue Mountain League, Godshalk graduated from East Stroudsburg in 1995 with a degree in Sport Fitness Management.

SEASon ouTLookWith an experienced lineup and deep pitching staff, Lafayette has the tools to continue competing at the top of the Patriot League. The Leopards return seven position players who will be a valuable asset as the pitching staff gains valuable experience, especially during the early parts of the season.

“Our lineup will be very experienced with many returning players,” head coach Joe Kinney said. “Our pitching staff will be young so it will be a critical area we need to develop, and the early part of our schedule will be crucial in getting our pitchers experience.”

the lineupBehind the plate, the Leopards will rely upon senior Ian McCutcheon and sophomore A.J. Miller. McCutcheon, a righty, and Miller, a lefty, will provide flexibility, especially during the long weekend series.

Three four-year starting infielders return. First base will be anchored by senior tri-captain Chris Luick, who led the team with a .329 batting average last year and is a former All-Patriot League selection.

Three players have a chance to see time at second base. Junior A.J. Pisarri and sophomore Matt Fenster look to be the leading candidates to earn the starting nod while freshman Brian Davila could push for playing time. Davila will also serve as the backup at shortstop.

Another four-year starter returns at shortstop in Daniel Bierce. Bierce, a 2008 All-Patriot League Second-Team selection, provides offensive and defensive leadership at the position as one of the team’s captains. He started all 48 games in 2008 and hit for a .324 average.

Jeff Butler, another captain and a previous All-Patriot League player, returns for his fourth season as the starting third baseman. Like Bierce, he will be relied upon to help anchor the infield as well as bolster the team’s offense.

Left field is a position with a lot of competition. Junior Brad Weiss, sophomore Alex Bechta and freshman Robert Fargnoli are pushing for playing time with Weiss and Bechta the leading candidates. Centerfield will be manned by sophomore Rob Froio, a player with excellent speed both defensively and on the bath paths. Junior

Matt Hall will start in right field where he saw playing time as a sophomore.

Other players who are expected to see playing time throughout the season include junior Justin Shepherd, who provides support both in the infield and outfield. Sophomore Adam McMahon will supply pop off the bench in a pinch-hitting or designated hitter role.

the Pitching staffSenior Ryan Hanna will help anchor the staff as a weekend starter. Junior Jeremy Atkins and sophomore Zach Fritz will fill two additional weekend starting spots. Fritz went 4-1 last season with a 2.88 ERA, the best mark among the team’s starting pitchers. Several pitchers are in the mix for the fourth weekend starting role including sophomore Corey Shea, who saw time there last season, and freshmen Ethan Perro and Ian Dickson.

If not filling a starting role, Dickson will help anchor the bullpen with senior closer Brian Mostek. Kinney will have many arms to call on in the bullpen, including sophomore lefty Joseph Verdon and sophomore righty Adam Young. Junior Tyler Chromey will fill a middle relief

role along with freshman Jack Rems. Fellow rookies Sean McGrath and John Gentile also figure into the mix.

the scheduleLafayette opens the 2009 campaign on Feb. 21 at Davidson and will spend the early part of the season playing at schools in the south. The spring break trip includes a trek through the Carolinas against Gardner-Webb and UNC-Greensboro.

“When we return from spring break, the focus becomes the Patriot League season,” Kinney said. “You try to use the first portion of the year to get ready to play and to be in competitive situations that you know are going to pop up week-in and week-out in our league.”

The Leopards will host league opponents Lehigh, Holy Cross and Army at Kamine Stadium and play road series at Navy and Bucknell.

Non-league highlights include the Liberty Bell Classic, which Lafayette has won the previous two years. The Leopards also host Monmouth and Rutgers and end the regular season with three games at Le Moyne.

The Patriot League semifinals will be held May 9-10 and the championship weekend is scheduled for May 16-17.

The baseball program is perhaps the most storied of all the 23 athletic teams at Lafayette, first beginning competition in 1865, the same year that the Civil War ended. Following that initial undefeated season that included just two games in the month of November, the Lafayette baseball program has been churning out important moments in Lafayette history, including four appearances in the College World Series and nine appearances in the NCAA Regionals, with the most recent regional appearance coming in 2007.

In recent seasons, current head coach Joe Kinney has taken Lafayette beyond the level of respectability to that of a Patriot League championship program. In the last six seasons, Lafayette has made four appearances in the Patriot League Tournament. The

when he was picked by the Cleveland Indians. A lefthanded pitcher, Mutis played two seasons (1991-93) with the Indians before being traded to the Florida Marlins where he played the 1994 season.

Former Lafayette baseball player Joe Maddon was the bench coach for the 2002 World Series champion Anaheim Angels. He took over the managerial reins of the Tampa Bay Rays in 2005 and guided his 2008 squad to its first-ever postseason appearance in which the Rays advanced to the World Series. Maddon was named the 2008 Major League Baseball Manager of the Year following his team’s season and playoff run.

Currently, the Lafayette Maroon Club Hall of Fame is comprised of 14 baseball players most of whom went on to play in the Major Leagues and two baseball coaches who are enshrined in coaching halls of fame.

Mike Gazella enjoyed perhaps the most successful run of all Lafayette graduates in the Major Leagues, playing for the New York Yankees’ world championship teams in 1923 and 1928 and what is considered one of, if not the best teams of all time, the 1927 Yankees.

A host of Lafayette players from the past have made it not only to the majors, but varying levels of the minor leagues, including Dick Fitzgerald who played for the Baltimore Orioles’ Triple A affiliate for several years.

Lafayette has a tradition of legendary coaches; namely Bill Coughlin and Charlie Gelbert. Coughlin came to Lafayette after a highly-successful pro baseball career with the Detroit Tigers. He had just one losing season in 23 years and ended his coaching career with a 273-134 record while coaching four Major Leaguers.

A World Series star for the St. Louis Cardinals’ “Gas House Gang,” Gelbert went on to coach for more than two decades at Lafayette where his teams complied a record of 307-172 in 21 seasons. Gelbert guided teams to five District II titles and an equal number of College World Series appearances. He also molded seven student-athletes into All-American baseball players.

Other top coaches include recent Penn State coach Joe Hindelang who coached Mutis and Antolick and was head coach from 1983-90 and his predecessor Norm Gigon who coached the Leopards from 1968-82.

2007 season was a historic success, as the Leopards won a program-best 33 games and their first-ever Patriot League title. That championship was made possible by a 2006 season in which Lafayette won 27 games, the third-highest win total in program history. In 2004, Lafayette advanced past the first round and on to the Patriot League Tournament Championship Series. Also in 2004, Tom Soldan ’04 made history by throwing the 10th no-hitter in program history, a 1-0 victory over Holy Cross.

Jeff Antolick and Jeff Mutis are recent Lafayette graduates who found a place in professional baseball. A 1993 graduate, Antolick was taken by the New York Yankees in 15th round of the 1992 draft.

In 1988, Mutis was the 27th player selected overall in the Major League draft

ThE pATRioT LEAguEathletic and academic success

In its second decade of combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 23 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham and Georgetown as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have, and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country.

Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League finished at the top spot with 97 percent of its teams reporting a graduation rate of 90 percent or higher in the most recent data. In addition, 79 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports.

Patriot League student-athletes and teams continue to enjoy success at the national level, with opening round victories coming in several NCAA Championships including Bucknell’s victory over national No. 4 seed Florida State in baseball and Navy’s triumph against national No. 4 seed North Carolina in men’s lacrosse during the 2007-08 campaign. Patriot League teams previously recorded consecutive first-round wins in men’s basketball, a final four appearance in men’s lacrosse and a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championship to highlight the League’s NCAA success.

The Patriot League’s mission is simple, to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society.

During the 2007-08 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams accomplished the following:

• 14PatriotLeaguestudent-athleteswerenamed ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans.
