    DOCTOR WHO

    NOVELSReview by Kenneth Parker

THE CABINET OF LIGHTby Daniel O Mahoney

The theme of the Doctor participating in

the affairs of Earth and the results thereofhas been touched upon many times in thepast, whether on screen or in novels. Thediscovery by an outsidecharacter that theDoctor has existed throughout history isa highly interesting idea and it is this plotdevice that is used in The Cabinet of Light.

In this mystery, we have the narrative pointof view of a private detective who is put tothe unwilling task of searching for thisDoctor who seems to have beeninvolved in events occurring centuriesago. Of course he knows that this isimpossible but never-the-less, thereseems to be some truth to the myth of thisDoctor.

The players in this story also include astrange woman with no memory foundwandering the streets of London (a victim

of recent bombings perhaps?), anunfriendly magician, a mysterious womandressed in black and a large body guardwho seems impervious to bullets. Ourdetective narrator discovers that trust isnot something to be taken lightly. Hisinvestigations into all of these odd

characters lead to a cabinet of light and, ultimately, to unraveling the story of theDoctor. It is at that point when things getworse for our detective hero.

The guest character perspective ideaworks very well and gives us an insight onhow the Doctors involvement, whether byaccident or on purpose, can affectpeoples lives. The main story is really notthe antagonists search for the cabinet oflight but the mishandling of a particularcase and his discovery of the secrets ofthe cabinet of light.

This book is one of the highly regardedTelos series and, therefore, one Ipurchased with interest. It reminded meof Fallen Gods, with a similar pacing andtheme to it, but Cabinet is not quite asenjoyable, perhaps because of a plot

element overused of late, the Doctor losinghis memory. This loss of memory does giveway to a puzzle that is ultimately puttogether in a fairly satisfying way. In theend, however, this book falls short in thecharacter and story developmentdepartments and I can only give it a good

rating and not an excellent endorsement.

    Lost in TimeDVD Box Set

Review by Kenneth ParkerThe Stories These are a selection butnot all of the incomplete stories for DoctorWho ranging from the mid to late 60s.

Highlighted among these stories is thenewly discovered Dalek Masterplan Part2. Eighteene p i s o d e swould beenough butin addition

    to the extrasmentionedbelow both T h e

Crusade and The Moonbase have themissing episodes represented with theaudio track of that episode.

The Restoration All of the episodes wereput through the usual restoration andVidfire process to recreate the video lookthat the episodes were originally made in.In the case of The Lion, the quality was

so bad that much of the process was notvery successful and the Vidfire was noteven attempted.

existing quality ranged from excellent todownright poor.

The Extras Too many to name here, virtually every little clip and home moviefootage of Doctor Who was included onthese discs.

T h ec e n s o r e dc l i p sr e t u r n e df r o mAustralia, thehome moviesfrom TheSmugglers and FX footage from SpacePirates are among the gems included. Afew surprises included footage of somekey scenes after the Doctors regenerationin The Power of the Daleks as well as

Steven Taylors and Vickis final momentsin the show. The extras alone would beworth the price of admission.

    THE TERTIARY PHASE

    Radio Serieswritten by Douglas Adams

    An Above the Title Production

    for BBC4Review by Arthur Robillard

Simply put, the long-awaited (at least forsome of us) return of the Hitch-HikersGuide to the Galaxy in its original radioformat doesnt disappoint. This is the first

of three new audio productions of DouglasAdams famous science-fiction humourseries, first broadcast in September andOctober of 2004.

Most of the original cast havereturned and a few new voices replace

those who have unfortunately died overthe years since the last episode sometimeback in 1980. The narrator (The Book),the late, beloved Peter Jones, has beenreplaced by William Franklyn. In a clevermove to explain this change, the firstepisode introduces Williams voice with a

flip-flop editing effect with bits of Petersto show that the voice circuits of the Guideare being updated. The other maincharacter who has been re-voiced isSlartibartfast, as Richard Vernon is alsono longer with us; Richard Griffiths joinsthe cast in this significant role. Douglas

Adams, himself, also appears in this seriesas Agrajag, the being Arthur Dentrelentlessly, and unknowingly, kills timeafter time, due to the recorded dramatic

reading of the third book Douglas mademany years ago.

Since the books and most every

other version of the HHGTTG divergestory-wise after the equivalent of the 4th

episode, there are many inconsistencieswith the idea of carrying on the radio seriesnot from the point of the last episode ofthat series but from the narrative point of

the start of the third book Life, the Universeand Everything. The series annoyinglydoesnt address this retracing of steps andcontradiction of story-line adequately, saying only that Zaphod Beeblebrox (MarkWing-Davey) had a double-psychoticepisode and was found wandering the

corridors of the Guides offices. Trillian(Susan Sheridan) is mysteriously (butwelcomely) back but wasnt present duringthe Total Perspective Vortex incident thatZaphod claims was utterly real (eventhough it was revealed in the original seriesthat the Vortex he was subjected to wasnt

the real one anyway, but thats anotherstory). Also, Marvin the Paranoid Android(Stephen Moore) still, somehow, nearlydives into the sun in the Disaster Areaconcert-ending stunt, which neverhappened in the radio version. I dont thinkDouglas Adams would have minded if amore inventive solution to thecontradictions presented here beenwritten in his absence, perhaps evensomething as simple as saying that ArthurDent (Simon Jones), who was last seenstealing the Heart of Gold spaceship in a

fit of anger, accidentally mis-operated theInfinite Improbability Drive in such a waythat it ended up rewriting history anddeposited our heroes at different points inspace and time with sometimes-

contradictory memories of things. Orsomething like that. When you considerthe explanation for Trillians departure

between the Primary and SecondaryPhases of the series (episodes, or fitsas they were called, 1-6 and 7-12respectively) was fairly curt and not fussedabout, this sort of narrative solution is notall that unlikely or inappropriate. Be that

as it may, this radio series, The TertiaryPhase, and the series to follow will beadaptations of the third, fourth and fifthbooks.Mark Wing-Davey (Zaphod), Richard Griffiths

    (Slartibartfast) and Simon Jones (Arthur)

I find that this series is not as funny

as the earlier ones, but this is not the faultof anyone in the production, but that ofthe books which, in my opinion, becameless humorous and more plot-driven asthe series continued. Indeed the final bookMostly Harmless hardly ends on a punchline, and Douglas Adams had meant to

rectify that at some point. Still, there areplenty of funny bits which will entertain theseasoned hitch-hiker.

The production of this project is

Many reviews have been written about theDVD detailing the picture changes, whilethe sound mix has been virtually ignored. Here is a list of sound changes on the

DVD. This is all referring to changes madeto the original film, except in a fewinstances Ive pointed out differences alsofrom the 1993 re-mix. Some of these newsounds obviously were heard in the 1997Special Edition re-mix, some are new tothis mix. Ive also included a few of the

picture changes (not the obvious ones, orthe cleaned up effects shots). I have notnoted any changes to specific SE shots(such as the destruction of Alderaan or theDeath Star) since these shots are entirelynew.

The 1954 recording of the Fox logo is stillplayed though it sounds very distorted.

The new Lucasfilm logo is shown.

The Star Wars title card starts moving

much too fast in relation to the originaland can be seen shifting gears as it getssmaller and slows down.

New explosions can be heard over theopening shot.

The foley in this mix is very loud and inyour face. Not subtle in anyway. NoteThreepios footsteps. Theyve always beenthere, just never this loud.

largely the work of Douglas friends, producer Bruce Hyman and director DirkMaggs. Long-time Paul McCartney band

keyboard player, Paul Wix Wickens (alsoa friend of Dougs), provides the dramaticmusic. Philip Pope wrote and performedthe Krikkit Song, which is heard a cappellain the story but is heard with instrumentsat the end credits of that episode. The

sound and voice effects are outstanding, especially those contributing to AndyTaylors performance: it made me utterlyconvinced that Marvin was indeed talkingto a mattress. The CD release, put out justafter the final episode aired in England, contains some 20 minutes of extra

footage but, not having heard thebroadcast version, I cannot say where theextra parts appear. In all this audio dramais an enjoyable experience, and I lookforward to the next installments this year.

The sound of the ship docking has somerevised sound.

The shirts of the rebel troopers changecolors. They were always gray before. Insome shots now they are blue.

Vaders voice has been re-processedthroughout the entire film to get him to

    match the sequels.

When Artoo opens the door to the escapepod, the button he pushes buzzes.

The laser blast that convinces Threepio toget in the escape pod was re-done in 1993.

It is the same sound effect as a lampblowing up in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Thiseffect is also heard later in the movie.

When Vader is talking to the SecondCommander (Lord Vader, the battlestation plans are not aboard this ship!)

    the room int h ebackgroundm a k e sb e e p i n gnoises. Forfun, Ill pointout that thisactor has thesame voice asG e n e r a lDodonna atthe end of the

movie. Isuspect thatthe Second Commander is dubbed.

When Artoo is shot by the Jawas and fallsover, a tremendous bass impact has beenmixed in.

The restraining bolt being installed makesa different sound.

Artoos arrival inside the sand crawlermakes a new sound.

You now hear the sand crawler start up asit starts to move.

Later, you hear the sand crawler come toa stop. Threepio then says, Wevestopped before telling Artoo to wake up.

This line did not exist in the originalrelease.

The sound of Threepio rising from the oilbath has been augmented.

The lunch scene with Beru and Owen has

some new foley (Berus chair makes asound now). This is a quiet scene and youcan literally hear the faders being broughtdown after every line of dialogue. Dailoguedoes not sound integrated in this scene.

Berus pronunciation of father has beenredone......again.

Lukes land speeder can be seen in thelong shot from the sand peoples point ofview. Previously it was just a white speckmoving.

The clanking of the sand persons gaffistick is heard in this mix.

The Krayt Dragon sound that Ben uses toscare the sand people has been re-done.It almost sounds like a police siren at first.

Definitely sounds artifical as opposed tothe older, more organic sound.

The light sabers have not been re-processed to match the sound heard inthe prequels.

In this mix its very clear that the bartenderhas been dubbed. It was not as obviousbefore.

When Luke is thrown into the table, itmakes an all new sound effect.

When the stormtroopers walk into the barthey can be heard saying, Undertand youhad some trouble in here. This is heardunder Hans, Looks like somebodysbeginning to take an interest in yourhandiwork. line.

Alien sound effect is missing just beforeThreepios line, I would much rather havegone with Master Luke than stay here withyou.

The music edit just after the Jabba sceneis pretty bad. The music just starts. AlsoBens line If the ships as fast as hesboasting we ought to do well is differentthan the original mix. It sounds editedtogether here.

A quick dissolve is missing between theshot of the spy and the interior entranceof Docking Bay 94. It is a hard cut now.

The spy makes some more sounds beforeinforming the stormtroopers of where Lukeand Ben are.

There are new explosion sound effects inthe shoot out in Docking Bay 94.

You would prefer another target? Amilitary target? both sound crystal clear.

Then name the system! is clearly fromthe old mix. Right in the middle of the linethere is a quality shift. This happensthrough out the entire movie, but this maybe the most obvious. It almost feels like agame, wondering if the next line is goingto be the new clear dialogue or the older

sounding dialogue. Obviously, there is alack of consistency here and its jarringthroughout the film. This is problably theworst feature of this new mix.

When the Falcon arrives at Alderaan thereis some very deep bass. However, when

the Falcon is captured by the Death Starstractor beam, deep bass is missing thatwas heard in the 1993 mix. However thereis a lot of sound of the cockpit shaking.

Also in the 1993 mix, the sound of the TIEfighter shooting at the Falcon could beheard. Thats not here nor was it in theoriginal mix.

The PA systems line, Close all outboardshields sounds different.

Just before Han and company come outof the secret compartments, the twoinspecting stormtroopers stop at the exit

ramp and one of them now says, Theresno one here..

When Luke exits out of the Falcon and tapshis stormtrooper helmet, static can beheard.

The dialogue keeps changing during thecommand office scene, between the cleardialogue and the older sounding dialogue.

The computer in the detention block scenemakes new noises.

When Han, Luke and Chewie are shootingthe cameras in the cell block area, the

explosions are all re-done. There is alsosome new blaster fire added. When Hanshoots the console, his blaster is muchlouder now then it was before.

The explosion as the stormtroopers blastinto the cell block is much louder and has

    more bass.

When Leia shoots the hatch to get into thegarbage chute, the explosion is different.

Chewie pounding on the door of the trashcompactor makes new sounds.

The famous blooper of the stormtrooperwalking into the door has now beenpunctuated witha loud clunksound effect.

What was once atough to seemistake is nowpointed ot foreveryone to see.

When Ben is turning off the tractor beam(I guess this is what hes doing since thedisplay is no longer in English) some

sound effects that were heard at Bespinin The Empire Strikes Backand in ALIENare mixed in here.

The creature sound effects after they getout of the trash compactor are different.

When Leia fires her blaster during thechasm crossfire, it no longer sounds likeDirty Harrys .44 magnum. This chasm alsohas the ALIEN/Bespin sound effect.

When Luke throws the grappling hook, it

makes a whizzing through the air soundeffect.

When they are shouting for Luke to comeon board the Falcon (after Bens death)Leia now says, Luke, come on!.Previously, it was just Come on!.

Music reverb heard during the fight withthe TIE Fighters is gone.

During the TIE Fighter fight, there is a longshot of the Falcon and you can see red

body of Nikopol who has recently beenaccidentally released from cryogenicsleep. Horus hopes to impregnate Jill forreasons that will not become clear to theviewer.

This 2004 movie is a very odd combination

of CG and live action but what makes thisdifferent from lets say Sky Captain orCasshern is that the CG effects look likesomething from a video game and indeedI was reminded of elements of Halo amongothers. The effects, while not bad, falter

when we see the majority of characters areindeed CG characters. This may be thepoint as the world has become artificial andthere appears to be no attempt to correctthis.

Westbrook LakeWestbrook LakeWestbrook LakeWestbrook LakeWestbrook LakeBy Christopher ParkerWelcome to the Sampson Inn, an

exquisite experience of fine dining andrustic ambiance. Located just outside the

small hamlet of Westbrook, the SampsonInn features the finest foods, wines, anddesserts New England has to offer. Fromits award winning chowders to itsdeliciously rich double chocolate layertorte, the Sampson Inn prides itself on itsfive star menu and unparallel service.

Resting beside the idyllicWestbrook Lake, Sampson Inn enjoys aspectacular outdoor vista with its manyrose gardens, walkways and woodedpaths. Inside, the Sampson Inn reveals a

history rich with colonial independenceand old-fashioned Yankee craftsmanship. From its brick fireplace and oak floors toits authentic antiques and fragrant candlesthe Sampson Inn captures the spirit ofearly America.

Founded in 1745, the Inn was ahaven for weary and thirsty travelers. TheInns original proprietors, Mr. JonathonSampson and his wife, Helena, were pillarsof the community and were thought kindlyof by folks from all over. Tragically, in1753, the Inn burned down. Helena

    perished in the inferno.

Unlike the other movies mentioned,Immortal has some imagery that is justplain odd. Horus will probably make you

laugh when you first see him and after awhile youwill stare athim ine v e r yscene, notb e c a u s ethe effect is

good, but because it doesnt fit with thelive sets and characters.

Okay, what about the story? Uh, mmm,uh. Okay, this movie is a cross between

Blade Runner, Liquid Sky and The FifthElement. Throw in loads of drugs and beatbrain with a blender and there you have it.Not sure about the history of this moviebut it does star Charolate Rampling.

This movie is confusing but that in of itself

would be okay if it were not the imagerythat just doesnt make sense. When yousee the two Gods playing Monopoly youw i l lp robablyunderstand. Its almostas if thismovie wasmeant tobe acomedy and if that is the case then I canforgive some of what it has dished out for

us. It feels like the second or third part ofa movie series with so many unansweredquestions but by the end of the movie Ireally did not want the answers anyhow.

Jonathon somehow survived andrebuilt the Inn managing it until his deathin 1767. The Inn was passed down through

many different hands and was evenrenamed twice until it was closed in 1899.It became and remained a privateresidence until 1973 when it was sold to alocal entrepreneur who, after extensiverefurbishing restored the Inn to its formerglory. He even resurrected the originalname. Since then the Sampson Inn hasbeen a staple of fine dining and NewEngland eloquence.

Of course if you decide to spendan evening with friends and family you may

want to watch for something thats not onthe menu. Not everyone notices her. Sheis very selective whom she visits. And ifyou do see her, it is best to lookawayquickly.

She is a vision of beauty dressed

in yellow with long, dark hair dancing likeflame. Her face, as bright and beautiful asany womans, yet not one feature can bedescribed. Lips, nose, brow and eyes bluras if seen through ice.

She is Helena Sampson, stillresiding in the dwelling at Westbrook Lake. The fire did not burn hot enough to destroyher. Jonathon thought it would be, yousee, but like so many other presumptionshe made, he was wrong, again. Yes, theflames did manage to eat away Helenas

flesh and bone, but they also didsomething else very unexpected. Theyblackened her soul and made it hard andever lasting. Betrayal by a husband she

loved beyond anything else is hardly everforgiven. And in the cloud between life andoblivion it is not easy for Helena to

    recognize friend from foe.

Only those she chooses can seeher. And she chooses only those thatremind her of her one true love, Jonathon. It may be the tiniest trait or just a hint ofrecognition that attracts Helena to theunsuspecting patrons. Yet once shenotices you, you will become a suitor toher revenge.

You will not long resist her stare. Her gaze will burn, building until your very

soul is ablaze. You will be compelled toexcuse yourself in order to take that shortstroll down the back steps of the Innleading to the lake. Only at the bottom ofWestbrook Lake with its cool, wet embracewill you be able to extinguish her fiery gazeforever.

If you do come to the SampsonLake dont be afraid. The likelihood youwill meet Helena are slender. But if youdo have the misfortune of encounteringher you might want to ask her to try themerlot. Its the house wine and I believeher favorite.
