Lecture #11The Law of the King

James 2:8

If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture,

“You shall love your neighbor as yourself,”

you do well.

Page 3: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

James 1:25

But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.

James 2:12

So speak and so do as those who will be judged by the law of liberty.

Page 4: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Matthew 5:3, 10

Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake,

For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Page 5: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Matthew 5:19-20

Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.

Page 6: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Matthew 6:9-10

In this manner, therefore, pray:

Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come…

Page 7: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Matthew 6:33

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness,

and all these things shall be added to you.

Page 8: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Matthew 7:21

Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of

heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.

Page 9: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Matthew 5:17

Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets.

I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.

Page 10: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Hebrews 7:11-12

Therefore, if perfection were through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the law), what further need was there that another priest should rise according to the order of Melchizedek, and not be called according to the order of Aaron? For the priesthood being changed, of necessity there is also a change of the law.

Page 11: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Colossians 2:16-17

So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new

moon or sabbaths, which are a shadow of things to come, but the

substance is of Christ.

Page 12: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

1 Corinthians 9:19-21

For though I am free from all men, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win the more; and to the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might win Jews; to those who are under the law, as under the law, that I might win those who are under the law; to those who are without law, as without law (not being without law toward God, but under law toward Christ), that I might win those who are without law.

Page 13: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Matthew 28:18-20

And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you…”

Page 14: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Matthew 22:35-40

Then one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying, “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?”

Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”

Page 15: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Romans 13:8-10

Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not bear false witness,” “You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

Page 16: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Galatians 5:14

For all the law is fulfilled in one word,

even in this: “You shall love your neighbor as

yourself.”

Page 17: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Deuteronomy 6:4-5

“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one! You shall love the LORD

your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.

Page 18: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Leviticus 19:18

You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your

people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself:

I am the LORD.

Page 19: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Luke 3:10-11

So the people asked [John the baptist], saying, “What shall we do then?”

He answered and said to them, “He who

has two tunics, let him give to him who has none; and he who has food, let him

do likewise.”

Page 20: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

John 13:34-35

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Page 21: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Romans 12:10

Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another.

Page 22: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

1 John 3:16-17

By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?

Page 23: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Romans 7:9-11

I was alive once without the law, but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died. And the commandment, which was to bring life, I found to bring death. For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it killed me.

Page 24: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

2 Corinthians 3:3-6

…clearly you are an epistle of Christ, ministered by us, written not with ink but by the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of flesh, that is, of the heart… but our sufficiency is from God, who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

Page 25: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

1 Corinthians 16:14

“Let all that you do be done with love.”

Page 26: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Ephesians 3:17

…that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love…

Page 27: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Matthew 7:12

Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them,

for this is the Law and the Prophets.

Page 28: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

2 Corinthians 11:28-29

…besides the other things, what comes upon me daily: my deep concern for all the churches. Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is made to stumble, and I do not burn…?

Page 29: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Galatians 5:13

For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an

opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.

Page 30: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

John 13:13-17

“You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.”

Page 31: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Philippians 2:3-4

Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.

Page 32: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

1 John 3:16-17

By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?

Page 33: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Romans 14:15

Yet if your brother is grieved because of your food, you are no longer walking in love. Do

not destroy with your food the one for whom Christ died.

Page 34: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Matthew 23:23-24

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith[fulness]. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!

Page 35: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O man, what is good;       And what does the Lord require of

you       But to do justly,       To love mercy,

And to walk humbly with your God?

Page 36: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

John 5:30

I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous [just], because I do not seek My own

will but the will of the Father who sent Me.

Page 37: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

John 7:24

Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous [just]

judgment.”

Page 38: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

1 Corinthians 6:1, 5

Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unrighteous, and not before the saints?…I say this to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you, not even one, who will be able to judge between his brethren?

Page 39: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Luke 6:27-36

“But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you. To him who strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also. And from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either. Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away your goods do not ask them back. And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise…

Page 40: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Luke 6:27-36 (cont.)

“But if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive back, what credit is that to you? For even sinners lend to sinners to receive as much back. But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil. Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.”

Page 41: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Matthew 5:33-37

“Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.’ But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God’s throne; nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black. But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.”

Page 42: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Psalm 15:1, 4

Lord, who may abide in Your tabernacle?Who may dwell in Your holy hill?

He who swears to his own hurt

and does not change…

Page 43: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Ephesians 4:15

but, speaking the truth in love, [we] may grow up in all things into

Him who is the head—Christ

Page 44: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Proverbs 12:18

There is one who speaks like the piercings of a sword,

But the tongue of the wise promotes health.

Page 45: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Proverbs 15:1

A soft answer turns away wrath,      But a harsh word stirs up anger.

Page 46: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Proverbs 18:8

The words of a talebearer are like tasty trifles,

[traditional Jewish translation: “wounds”]      And they go down into the inmost

body.

Page 47: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Proverbs 26:18-19

Like a madman who throws firebrands, arrows, and death,

Is the man who deceives his neighbor,

And says, “I was only joking!”

Page 48: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Proverbs 27:14

He who blesses his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning,

It will be counted a curse to him.

Page 49: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

James 3:6

And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among

our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.

Page 50: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

James 1:19

So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak,

slow to wrath

Page 51: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Proverbs 29:11

A fool vents all his feelings, [“uttereth all his mind”—KJV]

But a wise man holds them back.

Page 52: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Proverbs 17:27-28

He who has knowledge spares his words, And a man of understanding

is of a calm spirit. Even a fool is counted wise when he holds his peace; When he shuts his lips,

he is considered perceptive.

Page 53: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Mark 10:21

Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you

have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.”

Page 54: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is

the head—Christ

Proverbs 27:6

Faithful are the wounds of a friend,       But the kisses of an enemy are

deceitful.

Page 56: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Galatians 6:1

Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be

tempted.

Page 57: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

2 Timothy 2:24-25

And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth.

Page 58: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

1 Peter 3:15

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear

Page 59: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Luke 4:22

So all bore witness to Him, and marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth.

Page 60: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Ephesians 4:29

Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.

Page 61: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Hebrews 10:24, 25

And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works…exhorting one another…

Page 62: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

1 John 4:7-8

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.

Page 63: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

1 John 3:14

We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren.

He who does not love his brother abides in death.

Page 64: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Galatians 5:22

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love…”

Page 65: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Romans 5:5

Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Page 66: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

2 Timothy 1:7

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a

sound mind.

Page 67: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

1 John 5:1-3

Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot [God] also loves him who is begotten of Him [His kids]. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.

Page 68: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Luke 9:23

Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily,

and follow Me.

Page 69: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

Luke 17:8-10

But will he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare something for my supper, and gird yourself and serve me till I have eaten and drunk, and afterward you will eat and drink’? Does he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I think not. So likewise you, when you have done all those things which you are commanded, say, ‘We are unprofitable servants. We have done what was our duty to do.’”

Page 70: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

John 12:26

“If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also.”

Page 71: The Kingdom of God A biblical study in twelve lectures by Steve Gregg Lecture #11 The Law of the King

1 Peter 2:21-23

For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps: “Who committed no sin, nor was deceit found in His mouth”; who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously.
