THE KING OF THE NORTH AND HERMANEUTICS
OVERVIEW OF DANIEL 11
BIBLICAL PRINCIPLES OF PROPHETIC INTERPRETATION
WHAT METHODOLOGY SHOULD WE USE?
Biblical Dogmatism is a practice in which manyChristians adopt, and the person teaching is a“matter of fact” or set on their points of view. Noother point of view will do.We need to be able to have definite beliefs, butbe wise as to how to share them.Be kind; allow for other points of view; No-onehas all the answers. Biblical Dogmatism candestroy a Bible study and lose friends.
BIBLICAL PRINCIPLES OF PROPHETIC INTERPRETATION
WHAT METHODOLOGY SHOULD WE USE?
Systematic theology is a discipline of Christian
mode of study, that formulates an orderly,
rational, and coherent account of the
doctrines of the Christian faith.
This approach is also called the “TEXT PROOF
METHOD” and allows us to follow the principle of
verse upon verse, line upon line, according to
Isaiah 28:10 and 13.
Isa 28:10, “For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept, Line upon line, line upon line, Here a little, there a little.”
BIBLICAL PRINCIPLES OF PROPHETIC INTERPRETATION
WHAT METHODOLOGY SHOULD WE USE?
The Text Proofing method allows us to use the following principles to correctly interpret prophecy, and these are all Biblical:
❑ COMPARE AND CONTRAST (juxtapositioning)
❑ REPEAT AND ENLARGE❑ CHIASMS❑ TIME PROGRESSION❑ FRACTALISING❑ SYMBOLISMS❑ PARABLE TEACHING
STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY
❑ By Structural Integrity we mean “what the chapter made up of.”
❑ For example, a house is made up of a structure and dressed on the outside.
❑ Do the four apocalyptic visions of Daniel show Structural Integrity and methodology? Yes they do.
A STRUCTURE
STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY IN DANIEL
For example, the four visions of Daniel, show us the following structural consistencies:
a. The metals of chapter 2 and the beasts of chapters 7 and 8 all parallel eachother.
b. The metals on the statue describe kings and kingdoms.
c. The little horn of chapter 7:8 is consistent with the little horn of chapters8:9.
d. The kingdoms of Chapter 11 are consistent with chapters 2,7,8.
e. The king of the north in chapter 11 must be typical of these empires & thelittle horn.
f. The king of the north in chapter 11 is consistent with the work of thediverse beast of chapter 7.
We can go on and on. The book of Daniel is consistent in all its visions.
THE CONTEXT AND MAJOR THEME OF DANIEL 11
❑ The chapter follows a consistent progression of theempires covered in previous chapters.
❑ God’s people remain in captivity in Babylon, under theMedes and Persians, until Artaxerxes’ decree.
❑ The major theme is that of the “king of the north”.
❑ Two kings are at war throughout the chapter, parallelingverses 40-45
❑ God is equipping us with the foreknowledge of what iscoming, that is consistent with Revelation 12, 13 and 17.
Dan 11:1-2, “Also in the first year of Darius the Mede, I, even I, stood up to confirm
and strengthen him.) 2 And now I will tell you the truth: Behold, three more kings
will arise in Persia, and the fourth shall be far richer than them all; by his strength,
through his riches, he shall stir up all against the realm of Greece.“
The Archamenid Empire
(Persian Empire)
▪ The Medes and Persians were now in power. All in all,
there were a total of seven kings that ruled until
Artaxerxes’ third decree to release Judah.
▪ These were: Cyrus, Cambyses, Bardiya, Darius the Great,
Xerxes (Ahasuerus), Artabanus, Artaxerxes.
▪ Darius the Great fulfilled the prophecy of verse 2.
“Then a mighty king shall arise, who shall rule with great dominion,
and do according to his will. 4 And when he has arisen, his kingdom
shall be broken up and divided toward the four winds of heaven…”
The Greek (Seleucid) Empire
▪ When Greece overcame the Persians, Alexander left theempire to the strongest. Much internal infighting tookplace. His generals took sides and fought each other inthe well known Diadochi Wars.
▪ Eventually, four generals arose to prominence, being,Seleucus, Cassander, Lysimachus and Ptolemy.
▪ These were later reduced to two - the king of the north(Seleucus) and the king of the south (Ptolemy).
Dan 11:16, “But he who comes against him shall do according to his
own will, and no one shall stand against him. He shall stand in the
Glorious Land with destruction in his power.”
The Roman Empire
▪ The Seleucid ruler was king of the north, until he gave way to the RomanPompey, who took on the title. Verse 16 introduces Rome as the dominantpower in 168BC. Antiochus surrendered to Ptolemy on his way from Egypt.Pompey began the Imperial Roman Empire.
▪ Pompey was followed by Julius Caesar, Augustus, Tiberius and others. Thisempire lasted until 476AD.
▪ Some of the events that took place under Rome are part of the record ofScripture, in the life of Jesus.
Note: History records that after the fall of the Rome, the Roman Papal Churchcame to rule. She ruled for 1260 years as the mystery woman of Revelation17:1-3 and as the power that persecuted the saints (Daniel 7:8,11,15-25). Thispower is described in verse 28 and 31.
Dan 11:31, “And arms shall stand on his part, and theyshall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall takeaway the daily sacrifice [a supplied word], and they shallplace the abomination that maketh desolate.”
NOTE: The Papacy is a false system of religion that isPagan. Study shows that he (the Pope) would replace allthe prior persecuting powers and bring into the churchfalse doctrines (abominations).
