Zerbey’s favorite movie of the year - “I really liked “Inception.” It was just incredible. The story and the CG… very impressive. I wasn’t much a Leo DiCaprio fan prior to seeing “Shutter Island,” but he’s a helluva actor. That being said, if you know me at all, you know how I dig my comedies, so I really liked “The O ther Guys,” too. I mean, Will Ferrell is magic. I was disappointed in the latest Adam Sandler movie, “Grown Ups,” despite the fact Salma Hayek plays the role of his wife in the movie. Even she couldn’t save it from being a disappointment.” Zerbey’s favorite restaurant of the year - “Locally , I have to go with a place in Tremont (a neighbor- hood on Cleveland’s near west side) called Ty Fun, which is a Thai Bistro that serves a great selection of Pad Thai and other delicacies from Southeast Asia. Special mention would go to Iron Chef winner Michael Symon’s B Spot (where they feature burgers and beer, and pretty much everything on the menu has bacon in it, including the vanilla bean, apple & bacon milkshake), 56 West and Latitude 41 N.” Zerbey’s favorite recreational moment of the year - “Believe it or not, I did not go kayaking once all summer . Kind of disappointing. But, I d id take three long bike rides through the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area, which runs from a Cleveland suburb all the way to the southern part of Akron. I didn’t ride it from start to finish, but I did about 14 miles each ride. Lots of pretty scenery and nature and wildlife to roll past while you’re down there. Second place goes to playing indoor soccer at a new facility that recently opened in Rocky River , just minutes from my house. Some guys bought an old indoor tennis facility and turned two of the barns into soccer houses. It’s sweet in there - the newest generation of artificial turf, big goals, fresh paint on the walls… I hope they get enough business to stay around forever because going there is so much better than playing indoor anywhere else around Cleveland. I’m on two teams there at the moment and I love going there to play. T oo bad my game doesn’t improve each time I enter. The time for that may have passed me by , sadly . Oh well. Nearly0 of the happy couple’s friends and family madeheir way to Put-In-Bay, and after late morninghower, the sun shone brightly throughout thefternoon, creating the perfect tableau for thevent. To go along with the guests’ delight at thedo’s’, it was the “open rowboat” on the Calfees’

Reception

The reception was held at The Crescent Tavern indowntown Put-In-Bay. After the best man and

There were other sliders and aveggies tray and alsosome shrimp. Sincethe new Zerbeys havemassive sweet teeth(tooths?), in additionto the traditional cakethat they cut and fedto each other, therewere dozens of blue-and green-frostedcupcakes for dessert, which were brought infrom a local bakery in

Rocky River called Great Scott’s. Kevin and CCshared their first dance together as husband andwife to the song “Wonderful World” by Sam Cooke, which was followed by CC dancing with her fatherto “My Girl” by The Temptations, and then Zerbeydanced with his mother to “My Guy” by Mary Wells. The guests danced and drank away the hours, andas night approached and many of the mainlandguests made their way to the Jet Express so theycould return home, CC and Kev carried on therevelry at Hooligans, an Irish pub at the other endof PIB’s downtown area. They spent the night atThe Bay Shore Hotel & Resort, the “finest”“traditional” hotel on the island.

Honeymoon

After the schoolyear ended,

Zerbey and ateachingcolleague led ahigh schoolstudent group toSpain for ninedays. There wereeight students inthe group, six of whom Zerbey taught back whenthey were in 7 th grade. The trip went from Madrito Córdoba, Sevilla, Granada and wrapped up nearMálaga, on the Costa del Sol. It was a really funtrip for everyone. The kids headed back to theStates from Málaga and Zerbey took the train backto Madrid so he could meet up with his wife thefollowing day. Once CC arrived, the newlywedsspent a couple days in Madrid before renting a MiniCooper and driving north to Pamplona (above) -where CC had studied for a semester when she wasa student at Ohio University - and then to SanSebastián (below), a beautiful seaside town not farfrom the border with France. While in Madrid, CCand Kevin were able to visit with CC’s host familyfrom her time studying in Pamplona, as theiryoungest son is now the owner of a bar/restaurantin the northern part of the capital. The housespecialty is txistorra , which is a Basque dishfeaturing spicy sausage that CC’s host brotherserved with scrambled eggs and potatoes.¡Delicioso! Since 2010 was a World Cup year, thenewlyweds did take some time out to catch a

Eight. Man, I can’t believe I turned eight thisyear. Seems like just yesterday Daddy wasringing me home to the house in Lakewood, etting up every few hours to let me out toee, taking me to meet new people and seeew things. Now I’m getting older and it’s aittle bit harder to get going in the morningnd it’s not so easy to go up or down the stepss it was once.

And then this year, he brings a cat into ourouse. Unbelievable. At rst, I was reallytoked. I mean, I love cats, but for someeason they don’t want to have too much to do

with me. Whenever I see them when we’re onwalks or whatever, I bark at them to try to gethem to come play with me, but they alwaysun off. So to have a kitty in my own house,

who would be able to play with me all theme… yeah, I was red up! But apparently,

his cat is just like all the others. She wouldide under the basement steps or go otherlaces to avoid me. And then she smacked men the head one day and gave me a pretty bigump. Not nice. For whatever reason, sheikes to yell at me - even if I’m just sittinghere minding my own business, she’ll walky and give me a meow that sounds like, “Heyuddy, watch it. I’m coming by and I’ll

whack you in the head again if you trynything.” I just don’t get it. Thanks, Dad.

Anyways, the rest of the year was fantastic. I ot to swim a TON at Put-In-Bay over theummer, and even went swimming here aouple times. We went on a lot of walksogether, went to Pet Supplies Plus a lot and I ot to spend some good times with my Nanand Papa and Auntie D. But maybe one of he best things about this year is that my

Mommy now lets me up on the bed to chillwith her at night before bed time. Most

ights, I get up there and can crash out for awhile before Daddy comes to bed. Yeah. It’she best!

Okay, I hope you had a great 2010 and that I et to see you sometime in 2011!!

Mack

The Princess WhoCame to StayThe Friday before Zerbey’s birthday, he and Mackmade a trip to Pet Supplies Plus to pick up somecans of wet food and a toy. On their way to thecheck-out, they swung by the rabbit and ferretcages, like they usually do, and then visited thebird cages, like they usually do, and then theychecked out the kitty in the Animal Protective

League Adopt-A-Cat cage, like they usually do. Butthis time was unusual in that the cage’s residentdid not shy away from the big black nose thatpoked up against the bars. This kitty took a pokeback through the bars at Mack. She was not

intimidated by the dopey dog in front of her. Mackturned away, realizing that it wasn’t going to beany fun for him to visit with this cat. The kittyallowed Zerbey to put a finger in the cage so shecould rub against it and let him scratch her chin. This kitty had begun working her magic on Zerbey, and he was done for.

“CC had always wanted us to get a cat,” Zerbeysaid. “I wasn’t necessarily opposed to the idea, but I am mildly allergic to them and there was noway I wanted us to take in some random feral catoff the streets. I grew up with a black cat and I

told her that one day we’d get a cat, but only if itwere a black one - and it would not ever be invitedto sleep with us.”

Zerbey went home with Mack from PSP and told CCthat they might be having a visitor after theweekend - she was going to Put-In-Bay for theweekend and he was going to Michigan to attend aIron Maiden concert. He told her all about thefeline encounter and they both agreed that if thecat were still at the store on Sunday, they’d takeher home. Unbeknownst to CC, Zerbey went backto the store first thing on Saturday to pay for thekitty and reserve her until Sunday afternoon.

They went back on Sunday afternoon and the catwas still there, and she melted CC’s heart. HerAPL name was Moon, so they decided to change hename to Luna. She’d been given up for adoptionby a family that was moving and couldn’t take herwith them. The Zerbeys bought all the necessaryitems prior to loading up the car - scratching posts, food dishes, litter box, etc. - and they phoned upZerbey’s Mom and sister so they could come overto meet the newest member of the family. Onething - Luna let it be known that she HATES car

rides, as she howled in disapproval throughout theduration of the ten-minute car ride home.

It was a noise that he’d have to endure later thatweek when he took her to the vet for a check-up.

But once everyone arrived at 19297, Luna quieteddown when the crate’s door opened. She emergedand spent most of the evening getting used to hernew surroundings. She spent lots of time relaxingunder the basement stairs, just out of arm’s reach.Mack came by for a sniff but he wasn’t allowed toget too close, too soon for fear of making Luna’sadjustment more difficult. She spent most of thefirst two days in the basement but eventually cameupstairs to get the lay of the land. By the end ofthat first week, she was sleeping on the guest bed.

“She’s great. Ten pounds of sass and love. She is

not a big fan of being picked up, though. We thinkshe’s part Siamese because she’s so vocal. Shereally doesn’t do anything without making somekind of noise, whether it’s running up the steps orresponding to us saying her name. It’s kind offunny how much she likes to talk. And she’s comea long way since that first week. The four of uscan spend lazy moments crashed out on the bedand she won’t try to hit Mack at all. I haven’t seenor heard her go after him in months. We werehoping that we could get them to pose together fora Christmas photo, but that just wasn’t in thecards. She’s not that comfortable around her bigbrother. Not yet at least. Maybe in 2011.”

The Kevin Zerbey Holiday Up

Teaching NewsWithout question, the highlight of the year in

aching for Zerbey was the day in January whens new SMART Board was installed.

or the uninitiated, a SMART Board is basically likebig computer screen that is interactive with the

oftware set that comes with it. You can usefferent animations while presenting informationlessons to the students, as well as play music or

deo on it. No hyperbole here, but it hasvolutionized the teaching profession.

Using the SMART Board to introduce my lessonsas made them more interesting, more dynamicnd more fun,” Zerbey said. “Honestly, it’s madeem more fun to present. I love using it for

ames and for looking up stuff on the internet realuick. The kids love writing on it too. Plus, itves so much time for me. Rather than having torite notes up on the board and then erase themefore the next class, now I can just use thestore option and the board looks like it did 40inutes earlier.”

Maybe the most significant thing it has done forerbey is give him a chance to change how heteaches hislessons.

“I canadmit thatafter eightyears, therewerecertainlessons thatI did oncruise

ontrol. But now, I’m in the process of re-doingl of them so that they’re SMART Board-friendly.ve thrown out old worksheets and created newnes that the kids can complete in class on theoard. It’s making me a more effective educator.”

other teaching news, Zerbey and his Worldanguage Department colleagues spent a greateal of time back in February and March writingeir new curriculum to match up with the newxtbook series that they were going to receive fore fall.

Soccer Newshe Rocky River High School Boys Varsity Socceream wrapped up its season with a record of

2-5-2 and bowed out of the state playoffs at theistrict Finals stage, which would have made themne of the final 128 teams (out of about 570,pread across three divisions). River has nevereen past the District Final, six times coming outn the wrong end of the scoreboard after thatame, and for the first time ever, the boys madee final two years in a row.

At the start of the fall, we set our goals to wine conference and to get to the District Final,”erbey said. “Anything that happens above and

beyond that is icing on the cake. We finishedsecond in the conference this fall, and to make itback to the final was something unexpected.”

“It was a fun year and we had a good bunch ofguys, so we were able to accomplish some nicethings. A really nice surprise for us was winningthe Greater Cleveland Scholastic Soccer Coaches

AssociationAward forSports-

manship,Ethics andIntegrity. It’simportantto me thatmy boysplay theright way

and that they’re not jerks out there on the field. It was an honor to be recognized by my peers forsomething this important. Of course, winning 12games was nice this fall, but I’m just as proud ofthis award.”

As far as his playing career goes, Zerbey joined upwith a new men’s league team, after the eventualdemise of his former team, which was largelycomposed of some of his good friends.

“I guess it’s a sign of the times that our team sortof folded. Guys get older, their families grow andevolve, there’s less ability to definitely gettogether once a week to play… I’m bummed thatwe’re not playing together anymore, but I wantedto keep going. It’s still fun to get out there andkick the ball around for a bit each week.”

Travel NewsJANUARY - Zerbey and one of his assistant coachesdrove to Philadelphia, PA for the annual NationalSoccer Coaches Association of America convention. The four-day excursion provided him with anopportunity to learn more about being a bettercoach, to catch up with some of his relatives andto get back to his Pennsylvania roots.

“I hammered some authentic Philly cheesesteaks.I went out to eat with my cousins. I got to hob-nob with lots of soccer folks. The weather waseven nice enough on the Saturday that I was ableto go out for a six-mile run. What more could Iwant? It was a great all-around weekend.”

APRIL - Zerbey and CC drove to Murfreesboro, TNto spend the Easter holiday with her mother andfather. While there, they caught up with some ofCC’s friends from back when she lived down thereand they went out for an afternoon on the town indowntown Nashville.

“We got some good barbeque at a place calledJack’s. We walked around for a little whiledowntown. What was really interesting to me wasthe fact that five months later, the very placeswhere we stood that weekend were completelyunder water after the terrible flooding that region

suffered. They’ll be making a return trip overthe Christmas weekend as well.

MAY - Zerbey and his friends Laura and Beckyreturned to Pittsburgh, PA to run the halfmarathon there. The trip was nearly a carbon-copy of the 2009 trip, minus the restaurant wherethey ate dinner on Saturday night before the raceand their times in the race itself. Zerbey ran it in2:00:51, which was nearly ten minutes slower thanthe previous year.

JULY - Zerbey and his friend Brian Salco and hisson Cameron are all huge fans of the Englishsoccer team Manchester United, and when theyfound out that United was coming on a pre-seasontour of the United States and Canada, they wastedno time in making plans for a road trip to see theirheroes in action. The three of them drove toPhiladelphia to watch United’s match against thePhiladelphia Union. It was a brief, but action-packed trip. Zerbey introduced the Salcos to Jim’s

Steaks and theywalked aroundIndependence Mall visited Eastern StatPenitentiary. Themorning after thegame, they visited tfamous “Rocky” stain front of thePhiladelphia ArtMuseum.

As far as the gamegoes, their second-rseats were prettynice, the weather w

ideal, most of their favorite players played in thematch and United won 1-0. Additionally, Zerbeygot some practice shooting the action with thenew camera he and CC had bought prior to their

trip to Spain.NOVEMBER - Zerbey and CC took a long weekenin Chicago to celebrate the end of anothersuccessful soccer season. They spent Friday nightwith a friend of CC’s from high school and herfamily in suburban Wheaton, IL. They hadSaturday brunch with CC’s aunt and uncle andcousin at their house in Lake Forest, IL and thenspent that night in downtown Chicago at TheAllerton Hotel, one block from The Water Tower, just off of Michigan Avenue. They had a wonderfudinner at a Spanish restaurant called Mercat a

Miscellaneous NewsIn 2010, Zerbey ran a total of five road

aces, which is an all-time high for onealendar year. He ran three 5-kilometeraces, one four-miler, one five-miler andhe aforementioned half-marathon. Nextear, Zerbey is not planning on runningny out-of-state halfs, but he is planningo run the Cleveland half marathon forhe first time ever in May, as well aseprising his role in at least two of theve races he completed this past year.

With most of the inside of the house allainted up and pretty after two years ofving at 19297, Zerbey and CC did aunch of outdoor renovations. Mostgnificantly, they ripped up a bunch ofaving stones that had been next to thearage in the ‘Sanctuary’ and put downew grass seed and new topsoil. As therst frost arrived and the first snows fellf the fall and early winter, the grass wasrowing up strong and looking good.

Once spring 2011 arrives, they plan to fill

n any bare spots and to enjoy not havingo pull all the weeds that used to grow upetween those stones.

Unfortunately, for the first time since002, Zerbey saw the Columbus Crewose more games than he saw them win.

After a 2-1 victory in the season openergainst Toronto FC, the boys in yellowell 2-0 to Los Angeles and 2-0 to Kansasity with Zerbey in the stands.

• In big-time concert-going news, Zerbeysaw Pearl Jam, Ozzy Osbourne and BruceSpringsteen in Cleveland, as well as IronMaiden in suburban Detroit. He also sawsome local shows in smaller venues withhis sister and various friends, enjoyingLed Zeppelin tribute band Zoso the most.

A Look Ahead at 2011• No major trips are planned for theupcoming year, but Zerbey would like tomake it back to Philadelphia to check outa Phillies game at Citizens’ Bank Park.He also intends to cheer on his ColumbusCrew at least twice and is weighing hisoptions to attend a U.S. Men’s NationalSoccer Team game when they play in theGold Cup (the continent’s championshipfor the many national teams) which willbe held at various cities throughout theStates in June.

• Zerbey and CC are planning a day tripto Pittsburgh to sample some of the localdelicacies that they’ve seen on both the

Travel Channel and The Food Network.Maybe a stop at IKEA? We’ll see.

• While Zerbey was unable to get out andpaddle Lake Erie or its tributaries in2010, he vows to turn that around in2011. He has at least three sets offriends who own kayaks and come hell orhigh water (yes, pun intended), he isgoing to get out as often as his summerschedule will allow.

Letter from the Editor...Wow! What a year it has been. I got married. Let me write that again. I.GOT. MARRIED. I’m not going to lie and say I never thought that was goingo happen, but I always thought it would happen at some point when I wasn my 20s. I don’t really care that it didn’t, because if it had, I wouldn’t

have met, wooed and married CC! I couldn’t be happier with starting off my “ever after” with her (sorry so cheesy - I’m watching “Shrek” as I type).

And I’m also not going to lie about the fact that one of the best parts of now being married is the fact we’re nolonger planning a wedding. :-) These days we’re on tobigger and better things, like getting started on afamily, loving our black pets and continuing to make ourhouse into a home.

Getting back to Spain last summer was fantastic. Iwasn’t sure when I’d ever get to go there with CC, but

the possibility of leading a student trip over there sortof fell into my lap and it sort of struck us that we couldturn that into our honeymoon. No thanks to the morons

t the AAA office in Westlake, we were able to plan out the trip ourselvesnd I had a lot of fun driving a Mini-Cooper over there. It was really coolor me to meet CC’s host family from her study abroad. They were really

nice and it’s great to know we’ll always have a place to stay and folks tovisit whenever we return. Now the question is, when will she and I getback over there?

So in sum, year XXVI wasn’t so bad for this guy. Lots of fun times withgood friends and my family. I still dig what I do for a living and I still digwhat I’m living to do. Stay well next year, thanks for reading and I hope toee you around somewhere. Good luck on the Crossword Puzzle!!!
