LEADERSHIP REPORT
Hello to our parents and carers, Student Led Goal Setting Interviews It has been a very busy Week 9 and 10 for our students and teachers as students have been preparing for and participating in their first Student led Goal setting Interview. Teachers have been explicitly teaching the skills of self regulation with students from Kindergarten through to Year 6 in order to support them before, during and after interviews and within the classroom during their learning. The skills being taught involve the process of inquiry whereby students ask questions such as:
What am I learning?
Where am I up to in my learning?
Where to next?
How am I going to get there?
Who can help me?
Parents and teachers have been listening attentively as students from K-6 take ownership of their learning and talk about their goals in order to improve. Research shows that the explicit teaching of the skills needed to self regulate helps students become more active and engaged learners. Self regulation is a skill that can be taught and learnt from an early age and will continue to be practiced and used throughout life. If you would like to discuss any other matter with your child’s teacher then interviews can be scheduled at any time throughout the year by either parents or teachers.
P&C Meeting this week At our P&C meeting this Tuesday evening (2/4/19), Year 6 representatives from the Student Voice Team, Isabelle, Lucille, Eva and Claudia will be sharing the results of their school wide survey on the School Uniform. Well done Student Voice. We will also be tabling a few school procedural updates on Wellbeing and Communication for parent information and consultation. All NSW Public Schools follow Department of Education policies and guidelines and our school procedures are underpinned by them. Mrs Larkman will be back on Monday 8 April - Week 11. TELL THEM FROM ME SURVEY – Years 4-6 All children from Year 4-6 are automatically enrolled to complete the survey unless the parental non-consent form (which went home last week) is returned to the school by 5th April 2019. The survey provides us with valuable feedback about what they think about school life and how engaged they are in their learning. Mrs Louise Tilse

INVOICES TO FAMILIES The office has given invoices to students recently via their class teacher. (If you did not receive one please come into the office and we can print one off for you). These invoices will include: Resources used for learning in the classroom and all extra curricular charges (Band, Strings, Dance etc). Please note that we have invoiced Band for the whole year – we only require payment for Band Fees Term 1 now. Thank you in advance for your payments. Payments can be made in person at the school office, over the phone with your Credit Card or an Online Payment (POP) via the school website. KINDER ENROLMENTS 2020 We are currently taking enrolments for Kindergarten in 2020. Families who reside within our ‘Enrolment Zone’ may apply for enrolment at any time. Our boundary map is on our school website. Due to enrolment projections, we will not be able to accept non local students. This will now include all siblings of current students who live outside the school’s intake zone (ie non local siblings). Parents need to be aware of these policy implications now and make the necessary adjustments with their children’s enrolments. There will be a Parent Information Session here at school in August (date to be confirmed). Thank you, The Leadership Team
EASTER HAT PARADE – (Kinder to Year 2) Our annual Easter Hat Parade is fast approaching on Friday 12th April at 9.15am outside the new hall. All children in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 will parade their fabulous Easter hats, masks and bonnets for you. Easter hats are made at home and brought along on the day. Children do not have to wear full school uniform on the day but must wear enclosed shoes and tops that protect shoulders. Don’t forget your school hat, as you will still need it at playtime. SCHOOL ASSEMBLIES Kinder to Year 2 will have their next assembly this Friday – 5th April! Assemblies will be every second Friday (Even weeks) at 10.15am in the New Hall. Year 3 to Year 6 – This Friday at 11.20am - every week! Parents are welcome to attend these assemblies in the new hall.
BAND/STRINGS NEWS As the end of Term 1 fast approaches, I would like to thank our musical families for your continued support as we made the transition to out of school hour’s rehearsals. We have three fine bands and a lovely string group now rehearsing and moving forward in their preparations for events later in the year. Making the commitment to band is indeed a big commitment, both from the families, financially and time wise and from the students, practising and caring for their instruments. We understand that issues arise regarding those commitments and at times it seems easier to give up but the music team are always here to help you through any difficulties or rough patches. From Term 2 onwards, we will revert back to our exit process should a student be thinking about leaving band. This will involve continuing to attend rehearsals for 3 weeks whilst meeting with a member of our music team to work through any problems that have emerged. Being a member of the band or string group is like being a member of a team. Beautiful music can only happen if we all work together. Upcoming performance dates in Term 2. Fri 14th June – Grandparent’s Day (Premier Band) Fri 28th June - Winter Winds @ The Conservatorium (All Bands) Band Days Primary Band Day : Monday 3rd June Premier Band Day : Thursday 20th June Concert Band Day: Wednesday 26th June Band days are held here at school, students are to wear ‘Band Uniform’ and lunch will be provided. Please watch out for further details closer to these events. Angie King PSSA GIRLS AND BOYS SOCCER KNOCKOUT – RESULTS On Wednesday 27th March, our Girls and Boys Football teams played fiercely against Hamilton South at Lake Macquarie Centre, Speers Point. The girls played first and what a game! The girls’ effort, perseverance and fabulous passing was amazing. Well done to Lexi who was able to counter the first goal with one of our own. Whilst the girls walked away without a win, they were in it until the end. Each player displayed great sportsmanship on and off the field. The skill shown on the field today and great teamwork reflects the girls passion for football. The girls should be extremely proud of themselves! The boys’ effort on the field today could not be faulted, despite walking away without a win. Within seconds of being on the field they had a penalty against them. They worked as a team and luckily Max was able to deflect the ball above the goals. After an injury and a change of field, the boys were quick to get back out there and give their all. Despite being down to 10 players in the second half, they forged on right until the final whistle. Two great goals were scored by Luka B and Luka K. The boys showed great skill and sportsmanship on the field and each player should be extremely proud of themselves. Tess Barns

STEAM Kindergarten students have recently completed a Design Project as a culminating activity to their STEAM lessons this term. Students designed and made an animal using pipe cleaners and UV beads which change colour in the sun. The next part of the challenge involved the students designing and making a shelter to protect their animal from the harmful UV rays of the sun. Over the two weeks, students used a variety of ‘thinking caps’ to help them brainstorm, sort and plan out their ideas. The rainbow thinking cap was used to think of all the materials students might be able to use to build their shelter. Then the students used the red and green thinking cap to sort the ideas into those which were good ideas (green) and those which might not work (red). The next step involves the pink planning cap where students drew their designs and selected materials. Finally, students put on their purple thinking cap and created and tested out their designs. The teachers were most impressed by the creativity and critical thinking skills demonstrated by students over the two week process. Students were able to describe how the UV beads worked and how they would use them to test out how well their shelter worked. What really impressed all of the teachers was how the students would test their shelter out in the sun and then go back inside and make changes to make it even better – an excellent demonstration of reflective learning!

ETHICS AT THE JUNCTION Could you be an Ethics teacher at The Junction Public School? After a great response from TJPS families earlier this year, our Ethics classes are full and a number of students are waiting for a place. I’m seeking a few more teachers to take the load off the current volunteers so we can provide classes for all families who have requested it for their children. Ethics teachers receive full training by Primary Ethics, the not for profit organisation approved to design curriculum and training for the Ethics program. Training consists of a two day workshop and short online modules. Lesson materials are provided. Suitable volunteers have an interest in children’s education and development of critical thinking skills and must be able to commit to delivering a class each week on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday afternoon (2-3pm) for at least 12 months. Many of the two day training workshops are delivered in Sydney or the Central Coast but one will be run in Newcastle in early May - so this is a great time to jump on board and be trained, ready to teach. In Ethics classes, children learn how to think logically, disagree respectfully and support their arguments with evidence, rather than act according to blind habit or peer pressure.
Children discuss topic such as: - imagining how others feel - what is bragging? - what is greed? - how do we treat living things? - what is laziness? - how do we disagree in a respectful way? - fairness

INTRODUCTION TO THE AFTER SCHOOL KLUB – TASK TASK is your new provider of before and after school care at The Junction Public School. We will begin at The Junction on Tuesday 30 April (first school day of Term 2). We are very excited about becoming part of your school community and are looking forward to getting to know all of you. We understand that a change in carers can be an anxious time for children, families and everyone involved. We wanted to share our story and the plans for the start of our service at The Junction.

• We have planned a “TASK The Junction Connection” picnic day for Monday 29 April. Children from TASK Ourimbah and TASK Merewether will join together for a picnic day at Speers Point.

OUR STORY TASK was started in 2013 by Madi Morrison and Suzanne Tucker – two mums with 3 children each. We were experiencing the chronic shortage of after school care at our own school in Sydney’s Inner West. We began as a small homework club – with 5 children (3 of them ours!) with one educator in a classroom. Our aim was to create a place that combined care, play and homework after school. In 2015, we became approved providers of out of school care. We have grown over six years and now operate in Newcastle, the Central Coast, Tweed Heads and Sydney in 15 schools across the public and independent/catholic school systems. TASK is an ethically private service – we channel monies back into our programs, people and resources. Madi and Suzanne are joint and equal owners of TASK. We employ 120 people – all of them from the local communities in and around the schools at which we provide service. Anyone wanting to work with us, please send us a resume. We

Money collection for excursions & events
All money will come straight to the office, this includes:- Dance fees, Band fees, School books, Excursion money etc. There is a “Payments” slot at the front counter in the school office – please post payments in this slot. For this to work successfully, we ask that any money that is sent into school be in a sealed envelope with your “Child’s name and class” on the front and details of what event you are paying for. Plastic lunch bags that seal are ideal. The school accepts cash (exact amount is appreciated - we do not have a float-money is banked every day), cheque or we have Eftpos facilities in the office. Please note that the school Eftpos facility is only available for school payments and not P & C – such
as the Uniform Shop. Payments can also be made through the “Make a Payment” tab on the school website. If you use this online option, please make sure you still return your permission note to school.
Absences Any absence from school must be explained. The Skoolbag App is a great way to advise the school of student absences, or alternatively phone the school, send an email or write a note. Each day at around 10am, the school sends out a SMS alert to parents of anyone who has an unexplained absence for that day. Please refrain from using the Class Dojo to explain absences as the teacher may not be at school or they are on class and unable to read the Dojo message before 10am. If you are going away and the leave is over (5) school days, you must complete an “Extended Leave Form” from the office prior to your leave.
Late Arrivals / Early Leavers School hours are from 9am to 3pm. First assembly is at 8.55am. If children arrive later than 9am, parents are requested to accompany them to the office to provide late arrivals information to office staff. A ‘Purple Partial Slip’ is then taken to the class teacher. Similarly, if children leave early for the day, parents are required to go to the office first and a ‘Purple Partial slip’ is then given to the class teacher when children are collected from the classroom. The ‘Purple Partial Slip’ indicates to the teacher you have been to the office to have the partial leave processed on the computer.
Medication at School The office is only able to administer ‘prescribed medication’ to students. This means medication that has been prescribed by a doctor. This medication must be left in the package provided, clearly labelled with the child’s name and dosage. If medication is required, a parent will need to come to the office and complete a Medical Deed of Indemnity form. We are not able to administer any medication without this indemnity form being completed. We are not able to administer Panadol or non-prescription medications.

UNIFORM SHOP The Uniform shop is open on Mondays from 8.45am to about 9.15am from the new space between the Senior Girls’ and Boys’ facilities just along from Class 4L. Payment for Uniform Orders here at the school shop on a Monday is by Cash, Cheque or EFTPOS. Please be aware when you are purchasing hats at the office, you are only able to pay by cash or cheque. The P & C Eftpos cannot be used by the office.

Other events (like the Cross-country BBQ and Mothers Day Stall) are run as a service to our school community. Mothers Day will be here before we know it.
