    COVER STORY

    THEJUDDSby Joe Henderson

The Judds released their first record in 1983, and the artistic impor-tance of this mother and daughter team from Kentucky has since been‘documented with three Grammy honors and five awards each from theCountry Music Association and the Academy of Country Music. Now,Cash Box adds another honor to this impressive list. We are proud toname The Judds as Cash Box's Country Entertainer of the Year!

This dynamic RCA/Curb duo has had 12 Number One singles infewer than five years of recording, and three of their albums have soldmore than a million copies each. During the same period of time, theyhave continued to win each and every award category that they havebeen eligible to win, in the Cash Box Annual Awards issues. With allthese facts in mind, plus the knowledge that The Judds’ road show hasexpanded in proportion to their popularity, (26 workers, a six-pieceband, three buses and two semis), we at Cash Sox feel the Entertainerof the Year Award has been well-earned.“We know we’re a one-in-a-million story,” mother Naomi concedes.

“You can’t get any more normal than we were four years ago: a nurseand a secretary. We come from the ranks. ..from blue-collar families. And, it’s almost as if we get more excited as time goes by, because weknow, now, how involved the music business is and how amazing it iswith all the talent around.”

Wynonna agrees; “The great thing about this business is that you’replugged in, if you want to be, to so many different kinds of music. I loveanything, as long as it has some depth and isn’t destructive.”Wynonna recently reached a high point in a career that’s been filled

with high points when Bono, U2’s lead singer, invited her onstage tosing with him. “It was,” she recalls, “one of those things that really

    blessed me.”

Well, Cash Box says, “Bless and bless, alike.” The Judds haveblessed the music world with their talents, and we wish to bless themwith their just rewards!

BOUND FOR GLORY — Michelle Shocked (right) and Marvin Etzioni led guests in animpromptu sing-a-long during a train ride hosted by PolyGram Records in celebration ofShocked's latest release. Short Sharp Shocked. (Photo: Jacki Sallow)

HOO-CHOO BOOGIE... -The day after her successful

    opening slot for Billy Bragg

    at the Wiltem Theatre, Poly-

Gram Records hosted quite an eventhonoring recording artist Michelle

Shocked. Keeping with the theme of

her current AOR mover “If Love Was ATrain” (off Short Sharp Shocked),

    PolyGram's Local Promotion Manager

Paula Tuggey stormed up the idea of

reserv'ing a box car on a train which

departed from L.A.'s Union Station en

    route to San Juan Capistrano.

On the ride to San Juan Capistrano,Shocked entertained the 80 or so guests

by crooning and playing guitar, joined

later by Marvin Etzioni on mandolin

and several music biz types on the

    various percussion instruments sup-

    plied (i.e. marachas, castinets, cow-

    bells, etc.).

LAY IT ON THE LINE "If Love Was ATrain” is the title of the current AOR hitfrom MercuryIPolyGram recording artist

    Michelle Shocked. (Photo: Jacki Sallow)

After lunch and some quality time inSan Juan Capistrano, we began ouijourney back. Having left Shocked be-

hind to continue moving South on her

current tour, we had to make do withour own entertainment. Etzioni and hismandolin led the way in a sing-a-longwhich included renditions of every-

thing from "Iko Iko" to “Sugar Sugar"

to “Respect" to “Beat On The Brat."PolyCramers Sue Sawyer and David

Millman probably showcased thegreatest untapped musical prowess of

aU (A&R folks should keep their eyeson this duo). Definitely one of the finest

    "industry events" in memory.

CLUB CRUSADE - “QubCrusade," an organization of local, so-

    cially conscious club owners, will

present a benefit for the Jamaican hur-

ricane relief effort on October 14 atj

    L.A.'s Variety Arts Center.'

    Featured performances wdll include ^

    The Broken Homes, Gentlemen After

Dark, Broken Glass, Zanes Fly,Human Drama, Kills For Thrills, !Zeros, Shadowland and DoubleFreak, with many more surprise addi-tions to be announced.

Since relief efforts aiding victims of

Hurricane Gilbert have subsided, QubCrusade has been looking for sponsors

in every field to join forces with the

    American Red Cross, Capitol Records

and American Airlines (who have com- !

    mitted to donating transportation oi

    supplies.

Doors win be open to the public at 9

    p.m. and continue until 4 a.m.. Admis-

sion will be S15.(X). Tickets are available

at both the venue and Ticketron loca-

tions. Food and clothing donations are

encouraged and will be accepted at the

door. All proceeds go to the Jamaican

Red Cross. For more information, call|

LOVE, AMERICAN STYLE - Forthose of you who hold a special place inyour heart for "the decade that

wouldn't die," a new club dubbed"1970" has opened at CandUejas (lo-

cated on the east end of the Sunset

Strip), playing only music released in

the years 1970 to 1979. The clientele is

your basic El Lay club-goer, but the i

music, ah the music, is a different story.

For those of you that are afraid, don't

worry. It's not all Donna Summercrooning "Love To Love You Baby" and

A Taste Of Honey warbling "BoogieOogie Oogie." During our brief visit,

we heard everything from Ian Dury's"Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll" to Ch er's

    !

"Dark Lady" to T. Rex's "Bang AGong" to the B-52's "Rock Lobster"

(the later already a decade old, beUeve

    it or not).

The club operates only on Sunday

    nights (from 8 p.m. - 4 a.m.) and fea-

tures aU the music you loved to hate

(and some you hate to love). The cover

charge is a measly five bucks. So pile

into your "Chevy Van," head down tothe club, and rock on with your bad

    self.

    Until next week...

ON THE WAY TO THE TOP - UB40 plays Madison Square Garden Oct. 13support of their self-titled A&M release, which does NOT feature their current Topsingle, "Red Red Wine." That song is from a 1983 album called Labour of Love...

first single from UB40 is "Breakfast in Bed” and will be released some timeChristmas.

The GODFATHERS FT. II -Epic Records is finally putting

the push behind one of their

    most overlooked bands. The

British five-some is being sent back out

on the road in support of Birth, School,

    Work, Death, w'hich vocalist Peter

Coyne calls “the story of life in four

stages," and the emphasis this time

around is on Top 40 rather than the col-

    lege/alternative market. The God-

fathers opened the tour w'ith a blister-

ing set at The Ritz Oct. 2, and the

prediction from this desk is that the an-

themic title track will be the most-heard

song on the sidewalk in the very near

future. It's an offer .... never mind.

THESE DAYS - Scotsman LloydCole has become a transplanted NewYorker. Cole says he relocated to w’ork

on material for the next Commotions

    record. Coincidentally, Capitol has just

released the domestic version of Lloyd

    Cole and the Commotions' Mainstream,

w'hich came out and disappeared on

Polydor in the UK last year. Hopefullythe American audience will be a little

more discerning: this is the quietest, gentlest, prettiest Commotions record

to date. Outstanding tracks are “Mr.

    Malcontent" and "Jennifer She Said."

    Definitely music to comtemplate life

    by.

OH, NO, IT'S DEVO! - The spudsare back, with a new' record and an im-

minent tour in support of it. A quickconversation with front man (or as theirpublicist puts it, "the guy wtith the

whip in 'Whip it' ") MarkMothcrsbaugh shed light on w’hyDevo still exists, and more importantly, why w'e still need it. “W^e never reallyintended to be aw'ay from doing al-

bums so long. We just took a break, andit lasted three years," he explained.

Devo is stil relevant because "Devo is a

plastic example of the spirit of de-

    evolution" and the personification of

the materialistic outlook of the decade.

Beyond the reconstruction of the band,

    Mothersbaugh has been busy working

    on a film that coincided with the Am;;

nesty International Tour. The film w'as

an animated lecture on the Interna tion-*^!

    Michael Masser's Greatest Love

^ LOS ANGELES - When Michael^^vlasser recently received the "Spirit

'^4\^cd for Masser the culmination of apersonal struggle to find his own

throw it all away and do it the way l-iewanted - with a career in music.

    * 7\. large measure of Masser's suc-cess as a songwriter stems from the

Almost Have It All." Prior to the* immense Whitney success, he wasYb«st known for penning hits forDiana Ross including 'Touch Me In

Morning," and "Do You Knowiv .'lA^here You're Going To." Masser also

l^^vrote hits for Peabo Bryson, includ-'

11% "If Ever You're In My ArmsAgain." Ho is currently writing and

    ^ripf'oducing tracks for Natalie Cole's

    upcoming LP.

    But Masser's real achievement

'r overcoming the chains of paren-' yal social expectations. Masser

"^^'^spoke to Cash Box about the long jour-

    ** npy towards self-fulfillment.

^"From the age of three on, I had

    - ^ourring dreams of sitting at a piano,

1^banging at it," recalls Masser. "I

' never took lessons growing up. But

    s e'.4ery time I walked by a piano, I'd

    : feel emotional pain. I wasn't myself.

Tnally I taught myself to play as an

    .\dult."

    By Julius Robinson

    Carrying the discouraging mes-

sages about music in his subcon-

    scious, Masser's creativity funneled

into business, and he thrived. It also

bubbled into other areas, and he in-

vented, among other things, a garterbelt and a flytrap. Finally Masserfound him.self at the top of heap in

    New York City, strangely dissatis-fied.

"I was a stockbroker with offices atthe top of the Pan Am building,"shrugs Masser. "I had money, 1 had a

nine room apartment ov'eiiookingthe George Washington Bridge. Itmeant nothing to me. I'd ride my biketo work everyday. 1 started playinghooky. I'd make a left turn on my hikeinto Julliard and use their rehearsal

    rooms."

"As soon as I had achievexf every-

thing my mother wanted of me, themusic started to breathe fire. I went

to a shrink for the first time. 1 said I

wanted to write but couldn't. Istarted to work through thenegativity.

"Even today I'm trying to makemusic more enjoyable. 1 still have to

    pass go every time."

Masser sadly left behind a wife

and two kids, and came out west tomeet his newfound mentor, the late

johnny Mercer, who recognizedMasser's talent. Masser recountswith difficulty how he begged rela-tives for a little money to keep hisfamily's lights turned on back East,

but was denied. Despite tremendousguilt, his determination to follow his

    destiny was undaunted.

"I lived in Johnny Mercer's guest

house, I had no money. That broke at

the age of 31, and my wife left me."Masser sighs. "It took success in

business for me to know what I didn'twant to do. I'm comfortable being in

the state of unknown where the art-ist lives. Not knowing the answer, getting close. That sensitivity is con-

sidered weakness by some corporateworld people."

Masser got his first big chance wdth

    the newly-relocated Motown

Records, which was auditioninghundreds of songs and producers for

the next Diana Ross single. Masser

wrote 'Touch Me In The Morning"with Ron Miller, and also producedthe song. The success of that songstarted a long-term relationship with

Motown, where Masser was "one ofthe only white faces around."

Adds Masser, "When I workedwith Diana Ross, Berry Gordy gaveme a lot of leeway, I had a chance tochoose the songs, choose thesingles."

Most of Masser's songs have beenperformed initially by black artists.

    Was that merely a coincidence?

"Having grown up in Chicago, ina multi-racial environment, I wasclose to the experience of a lot of

people. I really don't know why it'sturned out that way with artists."

LY'rry Gordy, who was convincedof Massc'r's genius, pursuaded himto score the music for the film 'TheGreatest," a film based on the life ofand starring Muhammad Ali. Masserhad never done a score before, so heembarkexi on a soul-.searching jour-

ney to Jerusalem, where he wrote thescore in a hotel room.

"1 went to mosques, synagogues, Iwalked around, I prayed. Prior to thetrip, in my former life I'd been astockbroker and a lawyer. From thisexperience I finally got involved in

spirituality, and the music came forthe song. When I got back, I wrote the'The Greatest Love Of All" with thelate Linda Creixl, who had just gonethrough a mastectomy."

Masser pauses. "When LindaCreed and 1 wrote that song, theworld and time stood still."

The song was first recorded byGeorge Bensen, and it became amainstay of his set.

"I was sitting next to George Ben-sen at a dinner, and he told me abouthis faith in Cod. I told him that I'dwritten a song for Muhammed Ali,and would he do it? He said yes."

It was some time later that Masserbecame interest in a teenaged singer,Whitney Houston.

"Clive Davis invited me to seeWhitney Houston at a New York'sSweetwater Club. As 1 walked in shewas singing 'Greatest Love Of All.'Sissy Houston told mo later it was thefirst song she'd taught her, she'd told

Whitney if she could sing this song, she could sing any song. It's techni-cally difficult."

Masser would go on to championHouston, pushing her inclusion onhis Teddy Pendergrass cover "HoldMe." And when her debut album

    : Music

deal was signed, he was a naturalchoice as a writer and producer.

Masser considers himself a perfec-tionist in the studio, a man who willnot settle for second best.

"If you watch me working, it's likemaking a film," explains Masser.'Those songs are really complicatedto produce. With Whitney, they heldup the album, so she could re-dosome of the phrasing for 'Saving AllMy Love' and 'Greatest Love Of All."

"I've a high ratio of success pei

release, and the rea.son is 1 work, I'l.go over budget if necessary to get itright."

When it comes to writing however,Masser finds the process a lot moremysterious, linked to the ebbs andflows of the subconscious.

"I can't try too hard. I had a dreamlast weak with my father in it, and Iheard all the music to a new song, which I'm writing with Carole Bayer-

    Sager."

On the other hand, Masser is an ob-sessive re-writer, "My tendency is toconstantly change songs, if therewasn't a deadline they'd constantly

    evolve."

Because Masser has very little for-

mal musical training, he feels le.ss

    restricted by preconceptions about

    musical direction.

"At the beginning my songs woreconsidered radical. Touch Me In TheMorning' changes keys in several

places. Motown tried to cut it, edit it,it had seven different parts.'Mahogany' changed keys five times.

My new Natalie Cole single, she tellsme, is the hardest song she's ever

    sung."

Adds Masser, "Sometimes I feellike Fred Astaire, the moves are com-plicated, but you've got to make itlook easy."

Masser has worked with some ofbest lyricists in modern pop, includ-ing Sager, Gerry Coffin, Will Jen-nings, Cynthia Weil, Pam Sawyer,Ron Miller and Neil Diamond.

'The art of collaboration is open-

ness," says Masser. "I demand a lotof the song and the people when I'mworking with. I'm looking for the

poetry, as well as the mechanics."

Even after working through all the

    inhibitions that have hold Masser

back, he still holds some music inreserve, a secret body of work that he

would like to one day reveal.

'There's a part of my music I keepprivate, stored away. Real composi-

    tions, like 'Rhapsody In Blue.'"

Somehow you get the feeling thatone day that music will be heard.

That would be the greatest gift of all

    Patti Austin TapsThe Source

^ ^ LOS ANGELES - Every once inawhile, an artist creates an album

^^nat taps the source of their musical

    inspiration. It's a magical moment,

L Jifeen all the elements - talent, timing, luck - fall into place and the-•songs come alive with the kind of eLfo^less ease that takes a lifetime to

    ‘"^perfect.

recently released LP The RealMe is such an album. Patti Austin

and does, sing just about anykind of music, and sings it like no one

But the music she sings on TheRe^l Me touches something fun-

    rfafnental in this consumma';e per-

Jpitrmer: her own history. The dozencuts of The Real Me reveal, in short,

musical roots of Patti Austin. But

they also do a great deal more. Her

.fanning renditions of "Smoke GetsIn Your Eyes," "How Long Has This

-cJeen Going On," "Mood Indigo,"j^'Slry Me A River," "They Can't Take

Tliat Away From Me" and others aremerely evocative echoes of the

    ^Bast. The real creative accomplish-

ment on display here is Austin'sability to reinvest these songs with

' i^vv meaning, nuance and emotion-

al resonance. She makes them her•'^oAvn. With the help of producer'

    '^>avid Pack, pianist David Benoit

and an all-star line-up that includes

^ j^^^^ngers Marty Paich and Jerry' Hey

    1and such world-class instrumen-

mlists as Jeff Porcaro, Greg Phillin-

    ganes, Bruce Hornsby, John Faddis,

nie Watts and Earl Klugh, Pattiastin has made the album of her

    life...about her life.

    ^ ^ /^nd it's quite a story. Born in Har-

l^^lem and raised on Long Island, Patti

Js the daughter of a professionaltrombonist father who performedtfh Lucky Millander, Earl 'Fatha'jnes and Fletcher Henderson, to

name a few, and backed artists fromLana Horne to Dinah Washington

^owore the bottom fell out of the big

, b^rd business. "I grew up with allthese tales of the road," Patti

'WeCounts, "and my parents' hademendously eclectic musical tastes

the record collection to prove it. I
