2Matsumoto CastleHimeji Castle, Hikone Castle, Inuyama Castle and Matsue Castle together with Matsumoto Castle are considered to be Japan’s Top 5 National Treasure Grade Castles. The surrounding streets make for a pleasant walk.

Tomioka Silk MillStarted in 1872, this was the first silk-reeling factory established by the Japanese government. It was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in June 2014. The main buildings such as the silk-reeling mill are still preserved in excellent condition.

Risshakuji TempleSituated within a rock forest, this temple spans over 420 acres, and is a 870 stone step climb from the mountain entrance. The traditional architecture of the mountain temple and dramatic backdrop is breathtaking.

KakunodateThis area of former samurai residences was founded in 1620, and gives a taste of what streets during the feudal era looked like. Kakunodate is also famous for being a cherry blossom spot, gaining it the name as “Little Kyoto of Oushuu”.

Miyagi Cat IslandTashirojima is fondly known as “cat island” for being home to countless cats. Island residents see cats as a lucky animal and have even constructed a Cat Shrine to worship them.

OouchijukuDue to its well-preserved state, this post station town was appointed as an Important National Treasure. Take a trip back in time walking amidst these ancient structures.

Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park Covered in snow for nearly one third of the year, this may be hell for humans but it is heaven for the monkeys. Since the park was opened to public in 1964 visitors from all over the world can’t get enough of the onsen-dipping monkeys.

Ginzan Onsen StreetFirst used as an onsen resort for a nearby silver mine, this nostalgic street of wooden bathhouses is also famous as a filming location for NHK drama series “Oshin”, using ryokan “Notoya” as a setting.

13Foot Spa Shinkansen Toreiyu Tsubasa Taking the Shinkansen to get to an onsen is quite common, but did you know you could also take a foot onsen in a high speed train? “Toreiyu Tsubasa” allows you to do just that.

12Koshino Shu*Kura This resort train was inspired by Japanese sake, for which Niigata is famous for. Various types of seating are available here, with the most unique being bar tables made from a wine barrel.

11Gonosen Resort Shirakami “Resort Shirakami” is a sightseeing train that features a large viewing window for a paronamic view of the Japan Sea. When the train travels between the Ajigasawa Station and the Goshogawara Station, you can even enjoy a Tsugaru-jamisen performance inside the train!

SL Galaxy This steam engine was inspired by Miyazawa Kenji’s novel, “Fantasy Railroad in the Stars”. The train carriages exude and old world charm. There’s even a planetarium in the train which projects images of the galaxy.

Tohoku Shinkansen “Hayabusa” Going up to speeds of 320km, this is a new model that connects Tokyo and Shin Aomori. With a streamlined design, cool green color motif and the highest cabin grade, Gran Class, that features cushy leather seats and impeccable service, you’ll wish the ride was longer.

Rokumon (Shinano Railway)

Joshu D-51 BentoThe bento is inspired by Joshu D51, a rare steam locomotive that is still in operation. The rice is cooked with bamboo charcoal to generate a dark color, and chopsticks are carved with train numbers.

18Gyuniku DomanakaThis is sold on the Yamagata Shinkansen line. Finely-sliced Black Haired Wagyu and minced beef is marinated and flavored with a secret sauce before being generously laid on a bed of fluffy Yamagata-grown rice.

23Aomori Tasty CollectionThis hexagonal box has 14 small sections, each filled with a taste of Aomori such as scallops, apples, squid etc to live up to its name.

21Aizu Kuradashi BentoThis bento is packaged in an Aizu Lacquerware container. The ingredients include pickled mountain vegetables, stewed cod etc, all of which are local dishes.

SL Galaxy BentoFrom the cover wrapping which illustrates the Fantasy Railroad in the stars to the retro container, this bento brings one back to the age of steam trains. The main ingredients are from Kamaishi, such as kelp-flavored rice, sea urchin and scallops.

Akita Hinai Jidori Chicken RiceBroth extracted from Akita’s famous branded chicken, the Hinai chicken, is used to cook famous Akita Komachi rice, which is topped with the teriyaki chicken, chicken meatballs, sesame flavored minced chicken and Akita pickled radish.

Zao JuhyoJuhyo is a phenomena due to the unique weather conditions on Mt. Zao. When illuminated at night, these natural snow sculptures make for a mysterious sight.

Akiu Ootaki WaterfallOne of Japan's most famous waterfalls, this has a breadth of 6m and height of 55m. This is sure to impress.

Oga PeninsularSurrounded by the sea, each area has a different type of scenic beauty. The West has strangely shaped boulders and dramatic cliffs, while the south coast is famous for its sunset.

Towada Lake, Oirase GorgeThe Oirase Gorge has a 14km walking path for a leisurely stroll that leads to Towada Lake, with various viewing spots of the gushing river.

Jodogahama BeachAppointed as Iwate's Famous Sightseeing Spot in 1954, these rock formations are the result of years of wavebreak. Lined with jade green pine trees and a clear blue sea, this makes for an ethereal sight.

40Goshikinuma LakeWith lakes ranging in color from red, to various shades of green and blue, the Goshikinuma Lake changes color according to the seasons, climate and time.

RyusendoRyusendo in Iwate is one of Japan's Top Three Limestone Caves, stretching 3.6km, of which 700m is open for public viewing.

Shiraito WaterfallThis is a must-see spot when visiting Karuizawa. 3m in height and 70m wide, this crescent-shaped waterfall looks like fine white threads are flowing down. This is one of Janpan's Top 100 Waterfalls.

NarukoNear Naruku Onsen resort is a river trek that leads up to a viewpoint of breathtaking beauty at the Naruko Gorge Resting Area.

Geibikei This river gorge stretches for 2km and one can take a river boat ride downstream lasting around 90 minutes. Both river banks feature steep and dramatic cliffs, making it a picturesque sight.

34 35Tazawako LakeAkita's most famous lake is also Japan's deepest, with clear waters that have earned it a spot as one of Japan's Top 100 Scenic Spots. Refresh and recharge at Tazawako Lake Highland Onsen Resort or Mizusawa Onsen Resort.

Zao Okama CraterThis lake formed by volcanic activity changes color depending on the weather and sunshine, and as such is also called the Goshikiko Lake. The path leading up to the crater is open from May till October.

Hotokegaura This dramatic coastline features distinctly-shaped rocks over a stretch of 2km. These natural works of art have been named after Buddhist images such as "500 Arhats" and "Beach of Nirvana".

44Kitakata RamenRamen is big is this little town. There are over 100 ramen shops serving Kitakata Ramen, which basically has a clear soy sauce-flavored pork stock and flat, curly noodles.

Zunda Rice CakesMiyagi’s signature food item, the zundamochi, is made by mashing boiled green soybeans and mixing it with some sugar and salt for a tasty paste that is eaten with mochi.

41Kiritampo Hot Pot This classic staple of Akita Prefecture is made by molding rice paste on a stick and roasting it over fire until fragrant and crispy on the outside while chewy on the inside. These are then cut into bite-sized morsels and thrown into the chicken broth hotpot with other ingredients for a hearty winter meal.

Bamboo Leaf DumplingsThese bamboo leaf wrapped dumplings which contain red bean paste are said to have been wartime rations during the Warring States Era for the troops of Uesugi Kenshin. Today it is a signature snack of the region.

Himokawa Udon Originating from Gunma’s Kiryu City, this won the 2013 All Japan Udon Competition. What makes it special is its flat and broad shape and smooth texture that glides down your throat!

45Togakushi Soba Pilgrims to Nagano’s Mt. Togakushi would carry Toga-kushi soba, or buckwheat noodles, as food supply. Today, the soba is famous as a local dish of the area and is one of the Top Three Soba in Japan. 48

Yonezawa BeefYonezawa Beef has long been famed as one of the top-class Black Haired Wagyu, together with Matsuzaka Beef and Kobe Beef. Yamagata’s environment is ideal for cow farming.

Naruko OnsenNaruko Onsen together with Iizaka Onsen (Fukushima Prefecture) and Akiu Onsen (Miyagi Prefecture) form the Big Three Onsens of Oushuu. Naruko Hot Spring Village consists of five hot spring areas of different characteristics.

Koganezaki Furofushi OnsenLocated by the seaside, the onsen pool here seems to merge with the ocean. Enjoying the outdoors in this onsen is a must-try. At sunset, the onsen is reserved for guests staying at the hotel.

Nyuto Onsen Nyuto Onsen is made up of a cluster of 7 onsen ryokans found at the foot of Akita Prefecture’s Mt. Nyuto. Each ryokan has a unique hot spring characteristic, with the “Tsurunoyu” being the most famous.

Kusatsu OnsenKusatsu is one of Japan’s Top Three Onsens, boasting the country’s largest volume of gush-ing hot spring water. The nostalgic hot spring street here centers on the “yubatake”, or Hot Spring Field.

Echigo Yuzawa Onsen This is said to be the setting for the novel “Snow Country” by Nobel Prize for Literature recipient Yasunari Kawabata. Here, onsen therapy is avail-able at all hotels and ryokans.

Zao OnsenZao Onsen is one of Yamagata Prefecture’s largest onsen resorts. The strongly acidic sulfuric spring here revitalizes the skin and is hence known as the “Beauty’s Bath”. Experience a communal onsen bath at Zao’s main onsen street.

Shibu OnsenThis 1,300-year-old hot spring area allows you to try hot springs of several different types that are all pumped directly from the source. The famous snow monkey onsen, Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park, is nearby as well.

Taking a dip in a steaming onsen, or hot spring, during winter amidst

falling snowflakes, with a view of snow-capped surroundings is like

heaven on earth.  

Akiu OnsenAround 30 minutes from Sen-dai City by car is Akiu Onsen. Most of the onsen ryokans here allow day-trip visitors to use their onsens and facilities.

6258Snow Strawberry Picking Most of the strawberries in Japan are harvested in the early Spring, but in Yamagata’s Sagae City you can try picking strawberries in the snow (reservations required). Get an early taste of strawberries grown in greenhouses.

Akita Furusato VillageLocated in Yokote City, this is a fully experiential theme park based on Akita’s traditional villages. Other than boasting the largest planetarium in To-hoku, there are other attractions such as souvenir shops and a restaurant serving traditional Akita dishes to get a full flavor of Akita’s charms.

Harunako Lake IlluminationEvery December Gunma’s Takasaki City lights up for this event where around 50,000 bulbs are used in various illuminations to create a dreamlike night scene. The illumi-nated lakeside pathway stretching for 100m and daily laser shows and fireworks are sure to delight.

Daruma PaintingShorinzan Darumaji Temple in Takasaki City is famous for its Daruma tumbler. At Daimonya near the Daru-maji Temple, not only can you visit the tumbler making factory, but you can also try your hand at painting your own original tumbler!

Nebuta Museum WARASSEIf you missed the festival in early August, you can check out the home of the nebuta here, where some of the giant lantern floats are displayed. There are also various experiential activities here, such as drum beating, which you can try as part of the nebuta experience.

Zao Fox VillageIn Zao’s Fox Village, are over 100 energetic foxes and other cute animals. Here you can observe various types of foxes in their natural habitat. The atmosphere is amicable, and you can inter-act with small foxes and baby sheep. Suitable entertainment for the whole family.

Oyaki Dumpling MakingOriginated in Shinshu (the traditional name for Nagano Prefecture), oyaki dumpling has evolved to become a simple yet delicious local specialty dish. Try your talent in oyaki making in the setting of Jomon style pit houses in Oyakimura Village. From making pastry and fillings to the final step of baking, the hands-on experience is sure to bring lots of fun (reservation required).

Sendai Tanabata Matsuri This is one of the top three festivals in Tohoku. During the festival, central Sendai will be colored by elaborate bamboo and paper decorations.

Hanagasa MatsuriHeld every summer, participants wear straw hats decorated with paper safflowers—the prefectural flower of Yamagata--and don colorful traditional costumes while dancing in unison to the traditional Hanagasa song.

Nagaoka Fireworks Festival This annual fireworks festival held at Nagaoka City in Niigata Prefecture is one of Japan’s big three fireworks festivals. Over 20,000 fireworks are set off to the delight of over 1 million spectators.

Aomori Nebuta MatsuriThis is clearly one of Tohoku’s Top Three Festivals, and is also one of Japan’s Intangible Cultural Heritages. The giant and vibrantly colored handcrafted lantern floats and the passion and raw energy of the parade participants and cheering of the spectators make this a representative festival attended by visitors worldwide.

Akita Kantou Matsuri The Akita Kantou Matsuri harks back to the Edo era and is des-ignated as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Its highlight is the lifting of a 12m-long pole weighing 50kg onto the shoulders of the parade participants.

Onbashira Matsuri Held once every seven years by the Suwa Grand Shrine, selected fir trees aged over 150 years old are dragged down the mountain to be erected as poles around the Shrine. Don’t miss the next Onbashira Festival in April and May 2016!

73Tsubamesanjo CutleryThis area gained a reputation for metal goods and cutlery production since the Edo era. Even till today, many craftsmen insist on using traditional techniques to make knives and cutlery.

79Aizu LacquerwareThis is distinguished by its special production technique that requires repetitive steps and long years of training as craftsmen. The lacquerware is both practical yet beautiful.

Peony Dyed Household ItemsHousehold items dyed using peony pigment has a warm look and soft touch. This technique has been adopted by Japanese designer Masako Oka in her designer label “ECOMACO”, in which all items are handmade in collaboration with handicapped people.

Kogin EmbroideryKogin embroidery originated in the Edo era and was passed down to the Tsugaru region. This craftwork evolved from the household stitching women working on the farms did during the winter and evolved over time to decorate garments.

80Kabazaiku, or Cherrybark CraftworkThe bark of the mountain cherry is used to make utensils and originates from the Edo era. Each item is carefully handcrafted and gets more beautiful in color with usage.

Uetsu Shinafu ClothDesignated as a national traditional craft, Shinafu is made from the fibre of trees and plants. Its texture is rough and durable, and together with Okinawa’s Bashofu and Shizuoka’s Kuzufu make up the Big Three Ancient Fabrics of Japan.

Kokeshi DollsThese have roots as toy dolls in the Tohoku area and were made by a piece of wood by craftsmen. They have a straight torso, round head and simple strokes for facial expressions. Each region has a unique Kokeshi design.

Nambu IronwareDesignated as a national traditional craft, Nambu Ironware originated from Iwate Prefecture with a 400 year history. All parts are intricately made by hand. Ironware products include teakettles, wind chimes and hotpots.

Originating from craftwork common folk did at home during winter, these

have been passed on today with a modern twist and continue to be treasured for their artistic value.
