Unlimited’s 70th Anniversary at our Annual Convention in

Anchorage, Alaska, from May 23 – 27, 2007.

We have a wonderful agenda planned for the convention. In

addition to the educational and inspirational meetings, we have a

full menu of exciting parties, tours and side trips for this once-in-

a-lifetime trip to Alaska. The work of our staff,

in cooperation with the Alaska host committee,

ensures an unforgettable event.

Convention is a special time to recognize the

achievements of Ducks Unlimited, especially

those related to the Wetlands for Tomorrow

campaign; but no celebration of organizational

success would be complete without honoring the people behind

those achievements. Once again, the General Business Sessions

and Presidents’ Luncheon will provide a venue to pay tribute to

these special leaders.

The program schedule included in this brochure will help you

plan your time while at convention, but there are a few details

that should be completed now to ensure your trip’s success.

special registration fee for children ages 14 and younger.

those who came later, lured north by a haunting inner spirit, have always been

hard-pressed to come up with a better way to describe Alaska, our 49th state.

a Brief history: From Folly to Fortune When, on March

30, 1867, then Secretary of State William H. Seward negotiated

a deal for the United States to buy Alaska from Russia for $7.2

million–or 2 cents an acre, many Americans called the pur-

chase “Seward’s Folly,” or “Seward’s Icebox,” thinking Alaska a

snowy, icy wasteland. Of course, that was before

treasures of gold, oil and wilderness adventures

were discovered in the state.

Today, Alaska’s natural appeal draws millions

of tourists to enjoy its rich traditions and native

history, and thankfully, they are all well preserved.

From the earliest inhabitants who crossed over

the Bering Land Bridge from Asia approximately

20,000 years ago, the cultures and villages of Alas-

ka’s natives remain icons of the state’s rich heritage.

Visitors can experience the state’s unique native

culture through demonstration totem carvings,

native dancing, local artisan handiwork, Russian iconography,

or find traditional native tools and technologies from Tlingit

cedar bark hats to the Inupiaq ulu.

The theme for Ducks Unlimited’s 2007 convention

is “The Journey Begins.” In this case, it really is

more than just a metaphor for a conservation

message. While the actual convention takes place

in Anchorage, the various tour packages that

Ducks Unlimited has put together will afford the

opportunity to explore well beyond the city itself.

Alaska is full of outdoor adventures, from the mild

to the wild. Choose from wildlife viewing, sea

kayaking, dog sledding and guided glacier hikes.

Relax aboard a cruise, pan for gold, or cast a line for

Alaska’s world famous King salmon. Skim the wilderness in a

“bush” plane or helicopter. Take a flightseeing trip over some of

the most breathtaking mountains in North America. In order

to enjoy all Alaska has to offer, you must get out and experience

it for yourself.

Whether you join us on our planned excursions or choose

peak, Mt. McKinley; it’s the largest state in the

United States, it’s two and a half times the size of

Texas; and claims the largest earthquake ever

recorded in North America, the Good Friday

earthquake of 1964.

Climate & Clothes With a moderate spring

climate of daytime temperatures in the mid-50s

to low-60s, and evening temperatures in the 40s, convention

attendees will enjoy adventure-packed days with almost 21 hours

of daylight!

While May temperatures in Anchorage are typically mild,

when traveling anywhere in Alaska, proper clothing is always a

priority. The layering technique is the most efficient and effec-

How do you begin a journey to one of the last unspoiled places left in

America? Well, the gateway to Alaska actually starts with Anchorage. To truly

experience the great outdoors isn’t difficult–where to begin is the challenge.

We’ve put together some suggestions of things to do, and places to see while

visiting Anchorage and nearby destinations. So take a walk on the wild side!

Embraced by six mountain ranges

and warmed by a maritime

climate, Anchorage is an urban

enclave surrounded by wilderness.

There is no city in the nation quite like it. In the

morning, you can catch world-class King salmon,

then catch a ballet in the afternoon or dine at a five-star restau-

rant. Anchorage is the only major city in the U.S. that, along

with its 277,000 human residents, is also inhabited by wolves,

bears, moose, Dall sheep and dozens of smaller animals.

The city itself rests at the base of the Chugach Mountains,

on a bluff overlooking historic Cook Inlet, named for Capt.

James Cook, the famous navigator who searched in vain for the

Northwest Passage. Sculpted by glaciers and seas, the Anchorage

area is a wonderland of majestic fjords and forested valleys,

where the northern lights ripple through winter, then summer

brings the city alive with vibrant, blooming flowers.

The municipality of Anchorage spans almost 2,000 square

miles—more than four times the physical size of Los Angeles—

and serves as the economic, communication, service and main

transportation center of Alaska.

Local activities Anchorage activities will thrill adventure

seekers of all interests and abilities. It is the perfect base camp

for Alaska adventures! Step foot on an Alaskan glacier, hike to a

Surrounding Anchorage is an extensive network of
