With daffodils beginning to pop up, it is hard to believe that winter has barely ended and that it snowed last weekend. The museum has been busy preparing for the 12th Annual Gracious Gardens Weekend, opening gallery and changing exhibits and working with interns and volunteers. Our latest exhibit SHAKER MAKERS: American Furniture Icons from North Union draws together many items of furniture with North Union provenances. Many have been off-display in storage for many years, so here is your opportunity to focus on the Shaker Makers from North Union. Textbooks will need to be re-written after the latest research about our collection becomes known!

The Lissauer Art Gallery had the great privilege of working with Bill Tregoning again who brought us the work of Christopher Pekoc. If you missed the exhibit, you can see Pekoc’s work at Tregoning & Co. and purchase a catalog and a DVD. Being installed this week is the art of Leslye Arian, another local artist who had her first solo show last year at Juma. We are excited to be able to welcome our dear friend to the gallery. Do join us for the Gallery Reception on April 8th. Thanks to our Community Advisory Board for their role in choosing what we exhibit in the museum and in the gallery! Welcome also to our latest Community Advisory Board member—Herb Ascherman, Jr. This Shaker Heights resident and native is also a celebrated fine art photographer, whose work will be on exhibit in May. Stacy Hunter, a former Westsider, moved to the Eastside in 2013 with her daughter to Moreland Courts. She was raised in Atlanta and Washington, D.C. before coming to Cleveland, graduating from Rocky River High School. She attended Wittenberg University and earned a B.A. and an M.A. with honors in History with a specialization in Museum Studies. For the last twenty years she has run a consulting firm for small non-profits, businesses and museums. She has expertise in development, fundraising, event planning, marketing, organizational and collection management, and historic interiors. She holds certification in historic preservation and non-profit management as well. For the last ten years, she has been staging and styling for both businesses and residences, as well as for fundraising events, particularly silent auctions. Clients have included Hopewell, Lakewood Historical Society, Mitchell Sotka, Ltd., Lorain County Metro Parks, and the Western Reserve Historical Society as well as numerous private collectors and individuals. Chris Pekoc: New Work The Jack and Linda Lissauer Gallery was delighted to welcome Christopher Pekoc back to the Shaker Historical Society for a solo exhibit. His work was on display in the Lissauer Gallery from January 29-March 20, 2016. His family has long supported the Shaker Historical Society, and he is the son of Irene Pekoc, who passed away sadly last year. Pekoc exhibited his art here in 2013, when we partnered with Shaker Heights native, William Tregoning, who owns one of the most respected art galleries in the area, Tregoning & Co. Tregoning curated “A Myers’ House Salute: Cleveland School Art 1910-1969”, which included a work by Chris Pekoc to represent the later period of the Myers’ residency in our building on South Park. This exhibit was devoted to Pekoc’s recent work, which challenges traditional concepts of art hung on a wall – it is more than paint on canvas… Pekoc uses mixed media to build his art with depth, clarity and resonance. If you missed it, never fear! You can always go to Tregoning & Company to see Pekoc’s exceptional work and more!

How Do We Select Artists for the Lissauer Gallery? Since 2014, the Shaker Historical Society consults members of this community to determine what exhibits and programs we present. Museum staff suggests artists to the Community Advisory Board, and, after discussion, the artists are selected. Staff then work with the artists to schedule them and install their work. In the case of Abbey Blake, her professor recommended her. On other occasions, artists have contacted us. So, if you are an artist, or if you know about one, who would like to see their work hanging in the Myers Mansion, please let us know! We will be presenting artists to our Community Advisory Board soon to determine next year’s calendar.

Bring Art Home! Did you know that we are selling notecards designed by Lari Jacobson in our Spirit Tree Gift Shop? Like-wise, we have examples of Abbey Blake’s work for sale as well, so if you miss an artist in the gallery, there is a chance you can still see their work in our gift shop. Open Tuesday—Friday 11am –5pm and Sundays 2pm-5pm.

The Lissauer Gallery features art from

Northeast Ohio artists. Supported by Jack

and Linda Lissauer, this intimate gallery is

designed to encourage new and emerging

artists, promote an appreciation of art

and support local artists.

A recent donation of photographs and clippings about the Jacob Strong house by Bob

Huebschman of Arkansas prompted our investigation of this Century home. He is the

son of Mr. & Mrs. Millard L. Huebschman who owned the house in the mid twentieth

century. This house and its various owners chart the history of this area and the

importance of historic preservation. The home has been preserved for future

generations, but owners have much freedom to decorate the interiors as they wish.

Mr and Mrs Millard L. Huebschman raised their son Bob in the house that Jacob Strong had built. Probably

a columnist with the Plain Dealer, Elizabeth Luft wrote about their house, “The walls are painted a cool,

grayed aquamarine. This is a perfect color because of the warm light coming through windows made of the

original hand-blown panes of glass.” Friends of the couple thought “You’re crazy” to buy an old farm

house, but Luft reports that friends changed their tune once they saw how the Huebschman’s made it their

home. “Deeper aquamarine and gold are the colors of the draperies and cornices. The gold is repeated in

the loveseat. Slip covers of gold, purple and turquoise cover the sofa and large chair.” This color scheme is

far from period colors used in the 19th century, but this family’s choices were in keeping with the

contrasting color fashion of the 1950s and represents their wish “to remodel and decorate an old house

for comfortable, modern living.” A 1956 Colorizer movie said “Color can bring new life to old rooms!”

(Colorizer Movie 1956 - Charlie Dean Archives).

The current owners, Jude and Dick Parke, took the interiors in a different

direction—not seeking to remodel for modern living so much as to make it

comfortable for them with as much historic decoration as possible to

complement the home’s history. Hand stenciled walls in the bedroom,

period antiques and even an interior “outhouse” wooden toilet seat are

part of this historic interior. But—they

have not limited their preservation efforts

to the interior, they have maintained the red barn that prior

owner George Cannon built and have saved foundation stones

from the Knittel barn that was across the street until 2014.

Walls can be painted and floors can be polished. Maintaining a

historic home in Shaker Heights means that you can alter your

interior—update bathrooms even—but those of us interested

in preserving the architecture and history of Shaker Heights

encourage you to preserve the basic fabric of your home.

Maintain windows, keep doors and light fixtures (if original)

and wonderful features like pocket doors and built-in

cupboards that are found throughout Shaker Heights.

Late last year, our friends at Northern Trust invited the Shaker Historical Society to attend a special program on Cybersecurity at the Union Club. Presented by Northern Trust, Deputy Chief Information Security Officer, Bill Barouski and the Special Agent, Ganpat Wagh, this program was an eye opener to the real and immediate threat to personal and professional information via the internet.

The program prompted the Shaker Historical Society to consider how it operates on the internet, to increase security for our passwords and to be very careful opening emails. One of the tips shared at the program was to be extra vigilant on Friday afternoons when we are least likely to pay attention to the content as well as the sender’s addresses in emails. For example, would you notice the difference between your colleague’s emails: [email protected] or [email protected]? Do you have Cyber Insurance?

Another tip was to limit internet access on any machine upon which you do banking. Hackers have plenty of time to focus on guessing your password to get to your money. Make passwords long and complicated and change them regularly.

In a follow up email, Northern Trust shared Bill’s Cybersecurity best practices and web links, and his suggestions for the best antivirus and anti-malware apps for Android, iPhone and iPad:

Shaker Beef Stew

Cut beef into 1 inch cubes. Mix together salt, pepper and flour. Dredge meat in this mixture. Melt butter in a Dutch oven over fairly high heat and brown meat cubes quickly. Add boiling water, cover and simmer gently another 30 minutes. Use dumpling mixture and drop into stew by spoonfuls. Cover tightly and cook 12 minutes more. Serves 6 to 8. Dumplings: 2 cups flour 2 tablespoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 2 large eggs 3/4 cup milk 2 cups meat or chicken stock Sift flour with baking powder and salt. Break eggs into cup and fill with milk. Beat well and stir into dry ingredients. Heat stock in a large skillet or shallow braising pot, and bring to boil. Dip tablespoon into stock, fill with batter and drop into boiling stock. Do not cook too many at a time; they will stick together. Cover tightly and cook 2 minutes. Turn dumplings over and cook 2 minutes longer. Serve very hot with gravy, or cook mixture on the surface of beef or chicken stew. Serves 6-8.

Miss the Caring for your Collections workshops? Please let us know! We plan to do

the series again next March. Those who attended the workshops learned how to care

Did you know that research for this program on the Luthi Garden revealed more about

Shaker Heights than just the plants and garden design created for it? In looking at the

archives of the construction of Arthur and Helen Luthi’s double house at the corner of

Albion and Southington, we discovered the letters from the Van Sweringen Land Co. to

her that requested their consent to turn over the right to choose who they sold their

land and garden. They declined to respond, indicating that not all of Shaker Heights in

the mid 1920s were in favor of group consent and discrimination by consensus.

On January 14th, Louis Rorimer kicked off our year of programming with a bang! A full house came to hear him discuss THE MONUMENTS MEN AND THEIR LEGACY. Rorimer told the real story as told to him by his father James, played by Matt Damon in the movie. This group of Allies was given the task of saving art that had been stolen by the Nazis during World War II. James was a leader in the U.S. Army’s Monuments, Fine Arts & Archives group formed in 1943. He was later the director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art through 1966. WE PLAN AN ENCORE PRESENTATION! Remember, members find out first!

On January 31st, Shaker Heights resident and President of the Cleveland Restoration Society Kathleen Crowther shared with us the resources available to us for Restoring Shaker Heights’ Houses! The Heritage Home Program helps residents get financing and low interest loans for home restoration! Thank you Kathleen for sharing this great program with us and Cleveland!

The Shaker Historical Society has been developing an archive and database of Shaker Heights houses, and welcomes donations of photographs and documents related to the past, present and future of YOUR home! Copies are welcome too!

Jacob Heist Kent State University History major Jacob Heist has recently started a project to catalogue

the Myers Mansion. This means that every door, historic light fixture, window, and period

accessory that came with this house will be documented, photographed

and indexed. Things like the Western Electric interphone that was returned

safely to us by the Schomberg Center in New York, who used it in their

Black Suburbia exhibit, will be formally accessioned. The Myers Mansion

has many interesting architectural features that will be preserved in record

this year!

Toylands: We Built this City with Legos! Wow! What a fun exhibit! We welcomed back NEOLUG (Northeast Ohio Lego Users Group) members, Zachary

Lewis, Todd Wolf, and Arthur Gugick who shared with us their time and talent with these amazing Lego

builds. The premise of this exhibit was to use Legos to tell the story of how the Van Sweringen’s developed

Shaker Heights. We know Shaker Heights is a beautiful garden city suburb. How did it get to be that way? The

Van Sweringen brothers built your city with state of the art schools, churches and architecturally pleasing

homes with plenty of green space! The Vans knew that top quality schools, multiple churches and a country

club were important for a garden city oasis away from the gritty city. The NEOLUG members created out of

Legos, churches, schools, homes and government buildings from all over Northeast Ohio. We hope you had a

chance to stop in and see this exhibit while it was on display!

Editor’s Note: This exhibit was curated by Ruth Zeager.

INTERNS & VOLUNTEERS Gabrielle Lucas John Carroll history major Gabrielle Lucas has been learning about the museum’s textile

collection. In the future Gabrielle hopes to teach American History at the high school level.

Her ultimate goal is to inspire students to become passionate about history. Growing up in

Painesville, Ohio, Gabrielle remembers school field trips to museums all across Northeast

Ohio. These trips and amazing history teachers inspired Gabrielle to pursue a career in education. At John Carroll

she is involved in the Leadership Scholars Program as well as the Youth for Justice/We the People Program. Here

she has been repairing and adding to our teaching collection of Shaker dress. For educational programs, we

provide Shaker clothing, hats and other accessories. Many of the costumes were ripped due to children being

hasty to try on the clothes, or were far too long for young girls who might step on the hems. Gabrielle repaired

several dresses and is in the process of making more in the manner of Shaker originals in our collection.

Have you updated your will

lately and included the Shaker

Historical Society as a

beneficiary?

A gift—however small—helps

us deliver our mission. Please

consider including us in your

will. We need help to increase

our endowment!

WISH LIST There are several little things that we need on

Smile.Amazon.com.

2500 file folders to create files for each object in the

collection! That’s about $2200 in total, but if

members bought a couple of packs each?

WiFi Security Cameras to install in select areas of

the museum—Withings has been recommended.

We are proud recipients of a Cuyahoga Arts

& Culture grant.

The Lake to Lakes Trail is now

open and the Shaker Rapid stop at

Lee Road and Van Aken has a bike

gulley to assist riders to transport

their bicycles up or down the stairs

to track level. Shaker Heights is

moving forward with each step

toward safe, convenient and

accessible cycling—thanks to the

work of many people and organizations! We invite everyone

to be a part of Bike Shaker, which has its own Facebook

page. We will be riding in the third VeloSano Bike to Cure

event, and hope that new cyclists will join us! We also will

be presenting more popular guided bike tours by Shaker

Heights architect and Shaker Historical Society board

member Greydon Petznick!
