After 3 years at the helm of the Jewish Home as its President and Chairman of the Board, Alan Glassman passed the gavel to Marshall Kornblatt. The transition to Kornblatt highlighted the first time in the Jewish Home’s 99 year history that a resi-dent of Luzerne County was elected to serve in the Home’s highest position.

During his tenure as President, Glassman oversaw and di-rected the various board committees charged with developing policy for the successful operation of the Jewish Home. He thanked the chairs of the Finance and Personnel committees, Attorney Jerry Weinberger and Steven Seitchik, respectively for the leadership of their committees. He expressed apprecia-tion to Attorney Donald Douglass for chairing the Insurance Committee and to Leah Laury and Ann Monsky for directing the Membership Drive. Glassman acknowledged the work of the Scranton Auxiliary under the leadership of Lynn Shaffer, and Bedonna Mitchneck and Anita Coplan for their work with the Wilkes Barre Branch. He was especially appreciative to his Executive Committee members who aided him in addressing the many issues that arose during his tenure.

A major accomplishment during his tenure was the estab-lishment of a Strategic Planning Committee to address the ever changing landscape of the health care environment specifically as it relates to long term care for aging residents.

The Geoffrey Allen Walp Memorial Student Nurse Challenge is an annual bowl competition pitting eight teams of the top nursing undergraduate students from local colleges and uni-versities against each other in a test of nursing knowledge in preparation for their registered nurse licensing exam.

This year the Penn State University (PSU) Worthington Campus came out on top among teams from Luzerne County Community College, McCloskey School of Nursing, Mary-wood University, Misericordia University, East Stroudsburg University, Wilkes University and the University of Scranton. Two of the six members of the PSU team, Lisa Misson and Colleen Knight, are staff members of the Jewish Home. Lisa has been on the Home’s staff as a Licensed Practical Nurse for the past eight years. Colleen, who also has a BS degree in Health Administration with a concentration in Long Term Care, has been with us for three and half years, initially as our Nursing Human Resources Coordinator, and then as a part time Activity Assistant on the Harry and Jeannette Wein-berger Alzheimer Unit while she pursued a nursing degree. The Jewish Home is pleased to congratulate these two staff members on their accomplishments and their desire to ad-vance in a nursing career. Both stated they enjoy working with the residents at the Home and want to continue in the field of geriatric nursing. Both have accepted full time positions as Registered Nurses at the Jewish Home after they complete their licensing exam.

Congratulations to Jewish Home Staff Members on the Victorious Team

Six Jewish Home registered nurses have completed a three month, on-line, self-paced course in wound prevention and care. The course is sponsored by the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurse Society and is designed to enhance nurse’s ability to provide measures to prevent wounds as well as to provide optimal care for acute and chronic wounds as members of a collaborative wound care team.

Mary Ann Adomiak RN., Sharon Brown RN., Sharon Kapi-nus RN., Terry Macknosky RN., Judy Mercatili RN. and Mary Ellen Semon RN. have completed the course modules, skills competency testing and passed exams and are now Wound Treatment Associates.

The Jewish Home welcomes people of all faiths and encourages residents to explore and grow in their faith and spirituality. While the Jewish Home observes Jewish traditions and holidays, a full array of Christian services are also offered for those interested in attending. Some of the Christian services include Catholic Mass, rosary groups, the annual Bishop’s family mass, Eucharistic minister visits, and protestant services. These services are provided by the many local clergy and community members who are dedicated to sharing their faith.

Religion and spirituality play an important part in many people’s lives. The Jewish Home recognizes that religion and spirituality are more than just attending services. For many people it can promote healing, a sense of well-being, and quality of life. Many residents are pleased to find that they can continue to attend religious services at the Jewish Home as they have done their entire lives. For other residents, they are able to attend services for the first time in many years as they no longer have to leave their home to attend.

Spirituality at the Jewish Home

June McGlone crowns the Blessed Virgin Mary during Rosary Group.

Prospective residents and their families are increasingly looking to digital media to educate themselves on their place-ment options. In an effort to further expose the public to the services offered by the Jewish Home, we recently completed work on a professionally produced video tour of the facility. Current and former residents, staff, and family generously agreed to appear on camera discussing what makes the Jewish Home such a special place. Topics of discussion included the wide variety of services, activities, and meal options avail-able, as well as the dedication and skill level of our staff. The video also highlights the “resort” like amenities and designer-decorated touches found throughout the facility.

The video will be available soon to view on the Jewish Home web site (www.jhep.org). We also expect to utilize it as a promotional tool at upcoming healthcare and career fairs.

There is a lot of Mah Jongg playing going on at Elan Gardens. Four (maybe more) times a week to be exact. Last fall we decided to give it a go and included former players and even a few new ones. We started with one day a week but quickly added on. Several of our players had not played in years and just needed a refresher. We elicited the help of Lainey Denis and Annie Monsky to do the teaching, refreshing, and guiding, and they have become an important addition to our Monday session when we have two tables of players. They have also taught our Activity staff who have subsequently become die hard players.

I have fond Mah Jongg memories. I remember the table my mother used with the special fitted table covering. I remember the chocolate bridge mix and the nonpareils. I remember that the kids were banished from the room when it was my mother’s turn to be hostess.

I remember when I started to play over thirty years ago. I don’t re-member all of the people that I’ve played with or how it evolved to my current group. I know that I have met some people through Mah Jongg that I wouldn’t have otherwise met. Some of those I did meet have become my nearest and dearest friends.

It seems to me that Mah Jongg could be a metaphor for life. There are serious players and those that are more casual. Players come and go for all sorts of reasons. Relationships are built and severed. World news, local gossip, and personal trials and tribulations are all discussed at the Mah Jongg table.

I know that this piece is meant to be about Elan Gardens, and it really is. In less than a year, the Mah Jongg group here has evolved. There are younger residents playing and some of our oldest. There are Scranton natives, New Yorkers, and some all the way from Wilkes-Barre! There are different religions and different personalities and different incomes all present and accounted for at the Mah Jongg table. There are those who arrive early and those who breeze in just in time. There are those who tend to spend a lot of time alone, and those who are very social.

Life at Elan Gardens is all about providing care to our Residents in a respectful and dignified manner while fostering independence to the extent possible. Life at Elan Gardens is about the diversity of person-alities, needs, and actions. And yes, life at Elan Gardens is currently about Mah Jongg!

the facility are suitable to visit with our residents, we require a pet pass for pets visiting at the Home. These are issued by the business office to pet owners who submit current vaccination certificates from their pet’s veterinarian. We request that visitors with pets present their pet pass to the receptionist upon arrival. Monsky and Laury Lead a Successful Campaign

12

The results are in. The Annual Membership Campaign that has just concluded raised $125,000 from close to 750 indi-viduals, families and corporate donors. At the Annual Meeting in May, outgoing president Alan Glassman was effusive in his praise of both Ann Monsky and Leah Laury, co-chairs of the drive. He also commended the entire committee for their participation in the telethon that reached out to additional potential donors. “Even as the local Jewish Communities are diminishing in size, said Glassman, the importance of the Home remains large in the minds of donors.” The majority of donors come from Scranton and Wilkes Barre with a growing number representing the various communities of the Poconos and Eastern Pennsylvania. Both Ann and Leah noted that over 140 gifts emanated from outside of the Commonwealth which clearly indicates that families of many former residents wish to show their continued appreciation to the Jewish Home for the care afforded their loved ones. Incoming President Marshall Kornblatt noted that the funds raised each year play a criti-cal role in the Home’s ability to provide a high level of care. “This speaks very highly of the track record of the Home and the devotion of the Jewish Communities of NEPA and beyond for the work of the Jewish Home”, Kornblatt said.
