Weekly Halacha - Parshas Ki Sisa R’ Mordechai Torczyner – [email protected]

May I remove a tag from new clothing on Shabbos?

In general, there are three potential melachos involved in cutting a thread that joins a tag to clothing: 1. Separating two items that are joined tightly is the melachah of

koreia; 2. Cutting a thread with the goal of creating a thread of a

particular length or shape is the melachah of mechateich; 3. Adjusting a garment to make it usable is the melachah of

makeh b’patish.

None of these melachos is a concern where a tag is loosely joined to clothing and one forgot to cut it off before Shabbos. The clothing and tag aren’t joined tightly, the thread is not cut with any plan for its size or shape, and the clothing is already in its final form. One may even use a scissor to cut the string, if need be. However, some suggest that one should not cut the string in front of people who might mistakenly extrapolate that other acts of cutting are permitted.

One should not separate a tag which is sewn or stapled to clothing. Also, where two pieces of clothing are joined tightly, one should not separate them on Shabbos; there is concern for koreia.

First Aliyah: (30:14) Why do only men above the age of twenty have an obligation of the half-shekel? Second Aliyah: Why did the Jews choose the image of a calf as their foreign god? Third Aliyah: (33:12) Why does the word “Attah” – “You” – appear three times in this verse? Fourth Aliyah: (33:20) What is meant by Hashem’s “face”? Fifth Aliyah: (34:7) How can the pasuk say that Hashem “cleanses” (“v’nakeh”) sin, and then immediately afterwards say that He doesn’t cleanse (“lo yenakeh”)? Sixth Aliyah: (34:10) What is the new covenant (“bris”) that Hashem made in this verse? Seventh Aliyah: (34:29) Why did Moshe’s face only shine with rays of light after

he brought down the second Tablets, and not after the first?

A PRACTICAL INCLUSION TIP So ALL of Us Feel Valued and Welcome at BAYT

Inclusion- Embracing Differences

In the Shulchan Aruch (225:8-9) we read that upon seeing a person who has very unusual body features with which he or she was born, one can make the blessing, “. . . meshaneh habryot”, “. . . Who has created a variety of different types of people”. The formulation of this blessing teaches us several lessons which can be applied to the idea of inclusion in general. First of all we see the importance our Sages place on our embracing differences by acknowledging rather than ignoring them. Secondly, by attributing extreme physical differences to G-d by way of a blessing the Rabbis are teaching us that these differences reflect G-d’s will. Every individual, therefore, no matter how different or unusual plays an important part in the Divine scheme of things and is deserving of our love and respect.

UPCOMING EVENTSUPCOMING EVENTSUPCOMING EVENTS

We are pleased to announce the 6th Annual Shabbat Itanu@BAYT set to take place on April 27-28 2018 in partnership with Yachad, DANI, Yeshivat Nefesh Dovid, Kollel Ohr Yosef and BAYT Youth. This year, renowned teacher and inspirational speaker, Rabbi Yehoshua Hoffman, will be joining us as the scholar-in-residence.

More than ever before, the success of Shabbat Itanu will rely not only upon the exceptional ruach that we create, but also upon the generosity of community members, whose sponsorship allows us to create the inclusion for our kehilla. We kindly ask you to participate as a sponsor/supporter for the event to the level that you can contribute. Contributions to Shabbat Itanu can be made on the BAYT donation page by visiting http://www.bayt.ca/payment.php and selecting Donation - Shabbat Itanu Sponsor, by phone or in-person at the shul office.

DESPERATELY SEEKING VOLUNTEERS……

The burning of the chometz will be taking place in our parking lot from 6:30 am until 12:18 pm on Friday, March 30 (Good Friday, statutory holiday).

What is expected of the volunteers? Volunteers will be posted at tables that will be set up around the circumference of the "fire pit". Volunteers need to ensure that no plastics are placed in the fire. Volunteers check all of the bags that are being brought to be burned and if there is plastic, the plastic is thrown out. Many times people bring their offerings in plastic bags; BAYT supplies paper bags to be used.

How many volunteers are required? We require 3 volunteers per shift. If you wish to do more than one shift - great!!!!

Are children able to volunteer? Absolutely! Children ages 14+ are able to volunteer. If they require community service we will be more than happy to complete their forms.

Am I able to work more than one time slot? Silly question

Of course, the more hours you can do the better! Times slots are for one hour, commencing at 6:30 am until 12:30 pm.

What do I need to do? Contact Leslie in the shul office ([email protected]/ ext 143)
