Bell Show BallBell Show Ball was well attended on Valentine’s Day with many people from around the district packing the Bell Memorial Hall.

The formal part of the evening saw the judging of ladies entering in their categories. Judges had a hard time making their decisions. With great anticipation the Bell Showgirl for 2014 was announced as Lauren Fisher.

Show Princess was presented to Mikayla Heathwood. Junior Miss Showgirl was Rebekah Arnold and Show Queen was Carole Gray.

The entrants received many wonderful gifts donated by sponsors including a pearl bracelet, vouchers, flowers and much more.

Lauren has volunteered her time at the show and other local events including the Bell and Cooranga North Camp draft.

Everyone continued to dance long into the night with the bands Darren Gray and Pure Kaos.

The Show Committee would like to thank everyone involved and we would like to wish Lauren all the best at the Toowoomba Show.

A Note From The EditorIt’s hard to believe March is here already, it feels as though the year has just begun, yet here we are almost at Easter again! With March of course comes the change of season, the start of Autumn and hopefully some cooler weather, maybe even some rain if we’re lucky!

This month we have a wonderful story from one of our new contributors, Chantahl Stedman, who has written a story on the very talented photographer, Scott Bridle. You will see some of his amazing photographs and read all about Scott on pages 12 - 13 of this edition.

We are also excited to bring to our readers a Feature on the upcoming Jandowae Show, and a recap on our local Showgirl Dinners held recently. Congratulations to winners of all categories.

There are great competitions in this month’s magazine, with tickets for The Phantom of the Opera up for grabs, as well as our usual Pet of the Month Competition!

Lions NewsSince the last newsletter we have held two more market days, a January and February market. Both market days were well attended by the community. It is always great to see our regular stall holders. Every market day we seem to have someone new come along with something different which makes the day more interesting. Of course the kitchen staff are always kept busy with bacon, sausages and eggs. Hot chips and donuts with our cappuccinos are also a great way to relax on a Sunday morning. Not forgetting our Ringmaster who keeps the kids occupied with the merry-go-round.

Following our February markets on Sunday morning, Lions held our zone meeting with Lions coming from Dalby, Cecil Plains and Chinchilla. After the meeting, our visitors and members enjoyed lunch and a cuppa including a chance for a bit of socialising with our neighbouring Lions members.

Our members also helped at the Jandowae Street Party night by having a stall cooking donuts and also keeping lots of children busy with the merry-go-round.

Our newsletter probably sounds as though we do a lot of catering, but out of this activity we are able to donate to many worthwhile charities and also the local community. Recently we have donated to the Jandowae Memorial Hall Committee and also to our local hospital, with two new pressure relieving mattresses purchased for the hospital with donated funds. These mattresses will provide comfort and pressure relief for many patients in the Palliative Care section of the Hospital.

We have also donated funds to “Aussie Helpers” hoping that some farmers can be assisted during this drought. Lions also have foundations such as Australian Lions Children Mobility Foundation and Childhood Cancer Research Foundation, to which our club have contributed.

So we work hard as well as enjoying ourselves, and we are always seeking new members to help us shoulder the load.

Community

Jandowae Business and Community GroupThis has been a busy and mind boggling past four to five months, with the Business and Community Group working with QGC and a company called Social Ventures Australia. Together they have pushed the Group with “love”, to come up with a Strategic Plan for Jandowae’s future.

At the moment the final product is being packaged up for us to reveal to the Jandowae Public for all to view and provide feedback.

The meeting for this will be mid to late April as we want to give everybody a chance to come along and be part of the process to help Jandowae move forward (not tell us, we didn’t know it was on).

As far as I know nothing like this has been done throughout the Western Downs, all of the Chamber of Commerce/Business Groups have been through the same process and it will take the whole of the Western Downs in the right direction.

A lot of benefits will come from this process, by the Jandowae Business and Community Group having a strategic plan this will enable us to have a professional package to send to WDRC, and other organisations to request funding and grants for projects within the town, for the simple reason that we have a well prepared plan and goals, and all has been thought through, with the blessing of the town and it’s needs. Thus giving us a bit more gusto!!

The WDRC is very much behind the group, having and using us as a voice for the local area and town, both for and against whatever situation needs to be addressed.

Onto something a little less serious, and that’s the Jandowae Street Party that was held on the 7th of February, 2014. All I can say is thank you “Jandowae” for coming out and making it a great night of socialising and entertainment, and congratulations to lucky Brenda Tuppack who

won $1000, and to Beryl King for winning the television.

We would also like to thank the businesses that participated in the ‘Shop Local’ draw.

If you haven’t noticed yet we have changed our name slightly to incorporate the Community as we thought we may have scared away one of the two important parts of the Group and that’s the COMMUNITY, which is what we are all about. Without the community we don’t have businesses.

The group is now called the ‘Jandowae Business and Community Group’

Don’t forget to put the 10th of March in your diary, for the next Group Meeting, from 7.00pm at the Memorial / Community Hall.

Jandowae Music Club “Jamin” SessionHey Hey!! All you groovers, did we have a great afternoon of entertainment on the 9th of February!

We may not have had whip crackers, but by Jove we had some rockers, country, and squeeze box players, all “pumpin” it out, throughout the afternoon to the record crowd of over 65 people in number.

I cannot thank the community and the artists enough for all their efforts, I don’t think I saw anyone go out the door without a smile on their face.

We are now getting regular artists coming to the gig and some are travelling from as far away as Kingaroy, Dalby, Brigalow, Chinchilla, Durong and of course our old favourite Jandowae.

There are a lot of people to thank but, “A big thanks”, this week goes to two people who never fail us, and they are Les and Oakey of Jandowae. Every session they arrive two hours earlier to set up their equipment for all to use.

Without them we may well be lost, and what a pair of characters they are as well.

I will not be at the next session, but that is no excuse for you not to come and enjoy yourselves for a gold coin donation, and a plate of “grub”.

The next date is 9th of March 2014.

Active AnglicansActive Anglicans is off to an active start with our AGM last week, chaired by the retiring Bishop of the Western Region, the Rt. Reverand Bishop Rob Nolan. This was his last current official engagement with our Parish. He has served us well and we wish he and his wife Jan good fortune in his retirement. He may be back again in a visiting capacity once settled into retirement, when he will consider doing ‘relief’ for Parishes such as ours. A special Service was held on Friday 21st February in Toowoomba with large numbers present. We have contributed to the retirement gift fund and wait to see his choice of gift. In the meantime we have also lost the services of our good and cheerful permanent relieving Minister, Reverand Major David Snape. With the return

of more troops from the Middle East regions he has been recalled to an Army base further east, Amberley, and is now unable to get out to us at present.

This is our sad loss as he was a great morale booster for our congregation. Considerate of all circumstances, he sincerely comforted or cheered the families to whom he ministered. Thus we will operate on a skeleton service basis for the present with Lay Prayer Services on 1st and 3rd Sundays. Communions will be advertised whenever a relief Minister is available. Once monthly communion services at Taralga village will continue, all are welcome.

Neighbourhood Watch JandowaeThe meeting held at the Jandowae Police station was well attended. Guest speaker was Rick Hogarth who advised that the Jandowae Business Group has changed its name to Jandowae Business and Community Group. All citizens are invited to attend meetings and their input is valuable. Meetings are held on the second Monday of each month at 7pm at the Memorial Hall. The strategic plan is to be professional to help move Jandowae forward and encourage younger people to join. A succession

plan is currently being formulated and will soon be revealed to all. Sargent Mark Avent presented the Police report. Mark emphasised that parking is Jandowae is not restricted to the white painted lines. People can park in other areas. A request is being made to main Roads Department to have lines painted outside the post office and Police Station. The AGM will be held at the Cultural Centre on Tuesday 20th May at 7pm. Everyone is invited to attend as we all need to be security conscious in our town. Much can be learnt from being a member, please feel free to come, you will be made most welcome. Supper and socialising after the meeting.

Jandowae Cottage CraftAnother month has passed us by and we still have had no rain. I guess we have to be patient for a little longer. We had a display at the Jandowae street carnival. This gained a lot of interest and I would sincerely like to congratulate the organisers of the carnival as it was enjoyed by all who attended.

Our ladies are still working on their hexagon bags and then they start on the bucket bag. Saturday craft begins on the 8th March at 9am. Every one welcome, doesn’t forget morning tea and lunch. Their will only be two craft days in April because of Easter and Anzac Day.

Meals on WheelsJandowae MOW held a morning tea on Friday 31st January giving Volunteers the opportunity to meet the new members on the Committee, President Bec Harth and Treasurer Cara Keehn. Guest speaker Debbie Dennien from Queensland Meals on Wheels was able to tell the volunteers some of the changes at QMOW, but more importantly it was Jandowae’s MOW Committee’s way of saying thank you to a very dedicated band of volunteers. Some of the drivers travel into town from up to 30 kilometres away just to deliver one meal. We now have a full roster of driver deliverers but as with most organisations we will gladly welcome more, so if you have a free day Monday to Friday and would like to help deliver meals, you will be made most welcome. It takes about an hour of your time, with meals picked up at the hospital and delivered to our clients.

To our Clients, Jandowae Meals on Wheels will be undertaking its annual survey over the next few weeks and we look forward to receiving your responses.

Domiciliary Care NewsJandowae Domiciliary Care wishes to thank Arthur and the staff of Jandowae Five Star as well as their customers who have generously supported our service. These generous community funds are greatly appreciated and put to good use purchasing items that benefit our clients. Thank you!

Our transport service continues to be very well used with between four and ten clients being transported each week. Due to this high demand, if two or more clients are travelling to the same destination on the same day we will consider the possibility of these trips being combined.

Thank you to our clients who have been both patient and considerate of other clients on these combined trips.

Please be assured waiting times and client’s

individual needs are considered when planning transport services. If you have any concerns regarding your transport needs please feel free to contact our office on 46685900.

As always we welcome volunteer drivers who may be able to spare a couple of days a month to transport clients to medical appointments in Chinchilla, Dalby or Toowoomba.

Local and regional artists involved in the 2012 Timbertown Art Exhibition have now received mailed invitations to exhibit again in 2014. Taralga Happenings2013 is behind us and we are now well into the first quarter of 2014.

Residents, families, friends and management committee members enjoyed several festivities over the Christmas period.

It was good to have ambulance officers and a member of the public join the Taralga residents for Christmas day lunch.

A surprise visit by Santa in short pants delighted all present.

January was a reasonably quiet month with several staff members on leave. Several new staff and volunteers have joined the team since the last magazine article and are fitting in well to the Taralga family.

The Taralga Management Committee has also welcomed a new member, with Jenny Hartwig accepting an appointment.

The independent living units are fully occupied and Taralga aged care facility currently has one vacant room.

Police Report

Police ReportUniformYou will have noticed Queensland Police Officers are now wearing navy blue polo shirts, Commissioner STEWART has approved operational officers to wear the Polo shirts whilst on duty, and the light blue shirts will be worn on formal occasions.

TrespassOn Thursday 13/2/2014 & Saturday 15/2/2014 offenders have gained entry to the swimming pool after hours, female clothing and alcohol have been located at the scene. Police will commence patrolling the swimming pool nightly and any offender found trespassing will be arrested.

TrafficOn 14/2/2014 a male driver was intercepted on George St, Jandowae, the driver was detained by Police after providing a positive roadside breath test, the driver was transported to the Dalby Police Station where he was breathalysed, the driver was charged with Drink Driving – Reading 0.077%.

17/2/2014 at 9.02pm a male was intercepted on High St, Jandowae, Police investigations reveal his drivers licence was suspended due to demerit points, he has been charged.

17/2/2014 at 10.30pm Police received a number of calls in relation to possible shots being fired at the intersection of Hickey & Myall St’s Jandowae. Police Patrols revealed offenders were illegally letting off fireworks, further Patrols located a youth riding a trail bike heading from the township towards the Jandowae Dam, the rider of the motorcycle evaded Police and did not stop, the onboard video camera in the Police vehicle clearly identified the 14 year old male driver of the unregistered trail bike. Further Patrols located the youth and the motorcycle at a residence on High St, Jandowae.

The youth involved was returned to the care of his father and he will be interviewed at a later date and dealt with under the Youth Justice Act in relation to a number of traffic offences and alleged fireworks offences. The motorbike has been impounded by the youth’s father and is held at the Police Station until further notice.

On 21/1/2014 Police from Jandowae and Dalby CIB executed a search warrant at the same address in High St, Police located a small quantity of cannabis and utensils, fireworks were also located. An 18 year old man has

been charged with alleged drug related offences and the illegal fireworks have been relinquished to the crown.

Noise ComplaintsPolice have received a number of calls for service in relation to offenders breaching the peace and playing loud stereos. I would ask all community members to have consideration for their neighbours and keep their music down to a dull roar, in particular keep the base music turned down as this can be heard several streets away. Any resident breaching the peace is liable to a $220 fine or they can be detained and placed in the watch house.

Community PolicingJandowae Police Officers have commenced conducting push bike patrols of the township and surrounds, we will be paying particular attention to the school zones to ensure safety of students in & around the school grounds at all times.

They say they breed them tough in the bush but really I think we breed them brilliant…well that’s the case when you mention the name Scott Bridle. Scott is a born and bred Glenmorgan boy raised at Erambie. His appreciation for nature and the bush was implanted into him from day one by his mother and father as they taught him about the magnificence and splendour that the bush had to offer. With his mother as an artist there is no doubt that Scott “grew up immersed in art” and before long his mother gave him another artistic medium to turn his hand at, photography. Leaving home at age 20 set for the stations up north with camera in hand, Scott embarked on a journey of majestic beauty and admiration. He spent 15 years as a stockman snapping away before graduating to the skies as a pilot. This different angle opened the doorway for Scott in to a new world of photographic opportunities. He spent 10 years in the air before returning to the district with ample images that left the masses in awe. Scott delighted in seeing the pleasant expressions as people looked on through his photos which lead him to compiling his recent book “Outback”. From here Scott decided to try his hand at a bit of healthy competition by entering the BHP Billiton Cannington Waltzing Matilda Photographic Competition. He began his success in this area taking out first place in the Colour Print section in 2010 and more recently again in 2013 with his image (pictured) Jordan’s Woolshed Brenda.

Scott continues his passion for photography right here in the Western Downs and is now based in Meandarra with his newly established helicopter business specialising in contract mustering, feral animal control and aerial photography. With his love for the bush, Scott has also developed a special talent for the odd portrait or two. He is currently building his photographic portfolio in order to release another book and plans to do a

few more trips out west before its completion. The Year 1950...Facts and FanciesWhat do you remember about the year 1950? I remember I was eight years old and most of that year for me is enveloped in a fog. It was my third year of school, so I guess a few pecking orders had been established by then.

As I have stated before, the fifties were the glory days of Jandowae. At this particular time it is good to note that the Jandowae Show was in its third year also, the first celebrated in 1948. I seem to recall the builders (Alva McBaron was one) having some difficulty putting the bits together in the refurbished Pavilion.

I also remember as a six year old in 1948 waiting for the governor of our great state to arrive. The fact that we were lined up each side of the road from the front entrance remains indelibly imprinted on my brain.... lined up for hours it seemed at the time. Lieutenant General Sir John Lavarak was the man in question. I readily admit Google supplied the information. He was just some bloke in a flash car to myself and most of my classmates.... a very late bloke in a flash car.

Someone made the suggestion that there were 13 pubs in Dalby... but I didn't understand such snide remarks at that tender age. But I guess it is important to note that the road through Dalby in those days went past the other side of the racetrack and down Patrick Street into the town centre, making it a little hard to ignore that town and its attractions.

Todays main drag was not the main drag back then. I do remember being sick and tired of standing in line, while other kids were taking full advantage of side show alley and the fairy floss, cold drinks and toffee apples!

In 1950, Ned Hanlon was Premier, with Frank Nicklin as Opposition leader. Our local bloke was Frederick Allpass, and he was probably the last labor rep to hold the seat of Condamine. I wonder when that will happen again.

Ellis, Ellis and Blinco had the sawmill, on the corner of George and Sydney Streets, up and running in that year. In the next 40 years it had a few name changes as partnerships dissolved and new ones began. For example, Blinco, Blinco and Dowden, then finally Gowan Lea. There should be more information about that

during the Timbertown Festival later this year in June. Of course, RW Blinco and Sons were also operating their mill to the east of town.

In 1950 the Jandowae Butter factory was our main manufacturing industry, with over 300 farmers supplying cream to the enterprise. For all the newcomers, the factory was situated on the vacant block next to the Swimming Pool. A small brick office is all that remains as evidence of the Dairy Industry in this town. The main building came down in the early years of this century.

There is not much evidence today of the thriving Dairy farming centre that Jandowae was in those heady years. It was the mainstay of the farming fraternity and continued until the factory closed in the early 1970's. The cream was then collected and sent to Dalby where it was processed into butter. The Dalby factory closed in the 1990's. It is now the CRT shop on the left as one drives out of Dalby on the Warrego Highway towards Chinchilla.

Jandowae had two bakers, two butchers, two grocery/hardware/household goods shops (Lovell's on George...next to the Ambulance Station and the Pall Mall Traders where Athlone Cottage now stands).

Both were very successful enterprises. That road to Dalby was the one seldom travelled by most of us in those years. Jandowae was a standalone centre back then and most of us only ventured down that track in cases of necessity.

Due to lack of space and some inspiration, I will continue this walk down memory lane next month. The main emphasis will be on the Timber Industry and some of the characters pertaining to it. There are some really good stories. And most of them fairly factual (!?) How good is your memory, anyway?

For all the Eggheads out there: Quiz: What was the name of the sawmill out near Darr Creek in the late forties, early fifties? Answer next month. Clue: Something to do with timber and processing.

Ingredients

• 2 teaspoons olive oil

• 8 thick beef sausages

• 3 middle bacon rashers, rind removed, chopped

• 1 large brown onion, chopped

• 2 garlic cloves, crushed

• 500g cup mushrooms, sliced

• 1 teaspoon sweet paprika

• 1/4 cup tomato paste

• 1 cup beef stock

• 1/4 cup sour cream

• 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives

• Crusty bread, to serve

Method

1. Heat oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat. Cook sausages, turning, for 8 to 10 minutes or until browned and just cooked through. Transfer to a plate. Cover to keep warm.

2. Add bacon, onion and garlic to pan. Cook, stirring, for 3 minutes or until bacon is golden. Add mushroom. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes or until mushroom has softened. Stir in paprika, tomato paste and stock. Bring to a simmer.

3. Meanwhile, cut each sausage diagonally into 4 thick slices. Add to pan. Season with pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 2 minutes or until sausages are heated through. Remove from heat. Stir in sour cream and chives. Serve with bread.

PREP TIME: 15 minutes

COOKING TIME: 20 minutes

New entertainment this year will be Ben Bawden’s Cockatoo Chaos, with birds and reptiles. Bring your camera to catch a snap of yourself with the well known Living Statue “Be-Still” (Dave Mulder). This year also heralds the introduction of Noah’s Pig Races and Calcutta, starting from 11am, with five races being fund raisers for organisations within our Community. This is sure to be a lot of fun.

Other displays will include Vintage Cars, Street Rods, Vintage engines and machinery, Rock and Roll Dance Displays and an Animal Nursery. The Pet Parade will be held at midday, so bring your favourite pet for a chance to win prizes and ribbons.

Our new stage (thanks to Nathan and Ken) will host Rock and Roll Dance Displays and a Fashion Parade from Noni B and Lowes Men’s Wear.

The Showmen’s Guild will be providing rides in “ Side Show Alley” and there will be many show and market stalls.

Night Time Entertainment will start with the Rodeo followed by the Band “Whiskey Road’ until midnight.

All this and there’s more! ONE LUCKY SHOW ATTENDEE WILL WIN A $1000 GATE PRIZE. You will receive a ticket at the gate on show day, to be placed in the barrel at the Office. The winner will be drawn after the Rodeo.

We also have a raffle with the prize of a Lovely Murray Grey Floor Rug to be drawn at the show.

Gardening Tips for MarchAfter the heat and humidity that we have been having, your roses may be starting to look a bit out of shape. It is a good idea to prune any stray branches and fertilise them with ‘sudden impact for roses’ to keep them going.

Petunias, alyssum and lobelia can be planted now to get a good autumn show. It is also a good time to start preparing garden beds for winter planting, by mixing the soil with a slow release fertiliser and gypsum. Winter flowering plants include pansies, sweet peas, foxgloves and larkspur, just to name a few.

If you have a vegetable garden, then towards the end of March is the ideal time to prepare a section of the garden so it is ready for your winter vegetables, such as cauliflower, broccoli, onions, peas, cabbage etc.

Members were recently welcomed back for our first meeting for 2014. We gathered at the Jandowae Cultural Centre in the cool. Our guest Speaker was Lorraine Liste from Toowoomba, and we found her talk very interesting. Questions were forthcoming about the Passive Solar House. Lorraine also explained how she collected rainfall records from local people who had kept rainfall records over long periods. These were collated through Landcare for the Condamine Catchment which of course affects the Murray-Darling water levels. Thank you for sharing your expertise Lorraine.

Theresa Eadie from Goombungee was present with Daylilies for sale. She had lovely plants in spite of the dry and puts a lot of expertise into her display. Her talk was very interesting. Thank you for coming Theresa.

Jandowae State SchoolOur student leaders’ induction ceremony was the focus for week five. 2014 leaders are Dylan Brown and Mia Peters School Captains, with Mitch Tucker and Sheralee Wenham elected as the Vice Captains. The Prefect Group contains Zeke Morris, Isabella Grima, Bree Gordon, Sophie Mynick and Shaye-Lee Klein. Support Officers for 2014 include Andrew Evans, Joe Phelan, Cameron Hunt, Cody Cockburn and Dean Wenham. The Sport Captains are Dylan Brown and Isabella Grima (Cunningham) along with Dean Wenham and Shaye-Lee Klein (Leichhardt). Each group of leaders read their pledge in front of the students, staff, parents and family friends. Our special guests provided some well-chosen words to guide our aspiring leaders before presenting each group with their badges. Thank you to Senior Constable Alan, Business and Community Group Chairman Rick, P&C President Wade, Lions Club President Ivan and RSL President Darcy.

The Great Results Guarantee is being finalised this week. All schools across Queensland are designing strategies to support the concept that all students meet the National Benchmarks for literacy and numeracy or have an evidence based plan for students unable to meet the benchmarks. All our school community are extremely busy adjusting lesson plans where needed to focus on providing the best opportunities for success for our children at Jandowae.

The year four class with Mrs Duncan, Mrs Mittelstadt and Mrs Hawton has been heavily involved with their sustainability project and are taking to the garden in preparation for growing winter crops for harvest and cooking. Active After School Community sport has commenced with basketball and soccer and the students appear to be having much fun. The school is participating in a P&C fund raiser on Friday March 7th with students participating in a walk-a-thon. The school choir presented their latest song at the leaders induction which was superb. The choir is entered into two eisteddfods this year.

In closing, our school positive behaviour support program (SWPBS) has commenced brilliantly in 2014. Recipients of rewards for reaching their first milestones will occur this week. Mrs Woollett and her team have done a great job. Each week the students are presented with a school core value which is then taught in more detail in a lesson. School wide signage is the next phase of SWPBS at Jandowae.

ChaplaincyThe Jandowae State School community has this year welcomed a new chaplain to their staff.

Former Chinchilla Christian School teacher, Matthew Stoner, commenced duties as the Jandowae State School chaplain at the beginning of the 2014 school year.

Matt has been well accepted and welcomed by students and teachers and early reports indicate that the addition of a chaplain to the school community is having positive results.

Jandowae State School has been without a chaplain since the middle of 2012.

Following Matt’s appointment, the Local Chaplaincy Committee held an Annual General Meeting on Monday 24th February.

It is anticipated that the LCC will hold fundraising events throughout the year and will be seeking pledges of financial support to assist with the funding of the chaplaincy position.

Kindy KapersAs I write this we are busily getting ready to open Kindy the week of the 24th of February. Our thanks goes again to Lenny and his building crew who have done many hours and lots of weekend work to help us achieve our goal. Our thanks also to Michael Wood for giving up his weekend to help get us opened.

I would like to give my personal thanks to Jillian Alexander who has gone above and beyond in getting this major renovation completed.

The Kindergarten is looking magnificent, thanks to all the parents old and new that came to help put the Kindy back together again.

We are looking for donations of NATIVE shrubs and plants for our new landscaped areas if you

have anything you would like to donate please drop it off to the Kindy or to myself. Any NATIVE plants would be gratefully received.

Our focus has been on getting the Kindy open but rest assured we will be holding a grand opening which may take the form of twilight BBQ, drinks and open Kindy so that all the people who have helped can come along and see our fantastic new Kindy.

I am very pleased to say that we have limited spaces available so if you are wishing your child to attend Kindergarten please ensure that they are on our waiting list. With our current enrolments as they are, if we had not extended the Kindergarten, there would be pre-prep

children missing out on Kindy and no three year olds would have received a place. Thanks to the Renovation and Refurbishment Grant from the Department of Education Employment and Training, we can now meet the growing needs of our community now and into the future.

Once again a reminder that we are holding our AGM on the 12th of March at the Community and Cultural Centre at 7pm. All are welcome to come along and we look forward to seeing some of the new parents attend.

We’re back!A sincere thank you to the ladies at the Jandowae Cultural Centre for accommodating the teaching staff over the previous four weeks as we eagerly awaited the final touches to our new kindy building. It was lovely having a base to work from, however we are very glad to be back doing what we love most, working alongside little children. We are very excited about the year ahead. We have a strong teaching team, large numbers of little people and wonderful families to support the journey ahead.

At Jandowae Kindergarten we aim to provide the children with high quality care and educational experiences. Our routines are flexible and are adjusted to meet the needs of the children. The program is also based on the children’s interests, allowing the children to take their learning in multiple different directions alongside peers and their teachers.

Our beginning weeks will focus on getting to know our new children, establishing our new kindy

routines, exploring our beautiful new play spaces and learning to play harmoniously amongst peers. Children have been asked to bring in photos from home so we can learn more about each other’s families and interests and in a few weeks’ time, we will invite our grandparents to kindy to share in our learning experiences.

The Jandowae Show is just around the corner and it’s always a special time for our Kindy children as they enjoy creating entries for displays. It’s often the first time they create specials artworks for a community event and we always support and encourage this first step in contributing to their community!

Throughout the year, we would like to further develop the outdoor play space. We have ideas for a mud kitchen and music and water walls. We have the support of Loren Barren helping us out with her creative talents and we warmly welcome anyone else’s support and ideas with these projects. If

you have any old tables, sinks or cooking utensils lying around and not getting used please consider donating these items to your local Kindy.

A sincere thank you to all the parents who have helped us prepare for our new kindy year with moving, unpacking, painting, gardening and cleaning and a very special thank you to Jill Alexander and Maree Taylor for being the front runners in facilitating our building project from start to finish (although not quite finished yet). Our staff are truly amazed at what these ladies have achieved and are overwhelmed at the ‘voluntary’ work load these ladies have endured over the past 12 months. We hope you are extremely proud of yourselves and our community will be forever grateful.

Montana Welding Montana Welding is a new family business in the Jandowae and Bell Area. Luke Heathwood, pictured, has worked and attended school in this district for over 15 years, and lives locally with his family.

With his passion of welding and fabrication, Luke has set out to help farmers, small businesses and the public with welding and repairs. He works from home and can travel to any site for repairs. Designing and fabricating garden ornaments and stands has been a favourite endeavour of Luke’s, and one that he has excelled at. Examples of his work are pictured.

Walking in Your Shoes There’s an old saying "You can't really know a man until you walk a mile in his shoes”. Last month members of the BMO Team hit the road to get a better sense of just what it’s like to be in the shoes of farmers and business owners across our region.

The stories aren’t new to us. Most of the BMO Partners have grown up on farms and even still work on them, we’ve helped in our families’ businesses, we’ve invested and we’ve borrowed. We’ve been young and carefree, we’ve studied, and we’ve travelled. We’ve had health crises. We’ve lost loved ones. We’ve had families. We get what it’s like to try and put a child through school while praying for the rains to come. And we’ve had good times too, like winning a big contract or having a good day on the golf course. BMO has worked with clients across a range of industries for more than 24 years.

Importantly though, even though we’ve had

similar experiences to our clients, we know that we will never assume at the outset what it’s like to be them. To do that, we have to walk alongside them and listen. It’s part of our team values at BMO – our value of “understanding” is about respect and good manners, being open and honest, and committed to listening.

It goes right back to ancient Greece. Plato once said: “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle”. That is why we’ve launched a new campaign called “We’re with you every step of the way”. It means more than just walking beside our clients and advising them, it’s about being “with them”; providing a service that’s not dictatorial – but more like a partnership.

During February, we were out on the road travelling to Taroom, Miles, Condamine, Dirranbandi, Moonie and back to Dalby visiting clients and presenting our “The Farmer Wants a Life” seminars. One thing

that really struck us was that no matter how bad the conditions were out in these communities, everywhere we went we were taken aback by the positive spirit of our farming communities. In amongst the desperate need for rain, there were signs of progress and excitement. More than 150 guests came along to the sessions to talk with us about succession planning, business structures, tax tips, government incentives, aged care, employing people, communication and about being aware of the signs of and effects of stress.

We know all too well the many challenges all of our local small businesses are facing – not just farmers but service industry, manufacturing, transport and retail. We know that everyone’s wearing a different pair of shoes… Sometimes the path is smooth and sometimes it’s bumpy. Some are skipping through while others are dragging their feet.

Rat Bait ToxicityWarning! The mice are everywhere, and where there are mice there is rat bait. This time of year we see a lot of inquisitive dogs coming into the clinic with rat bait toxicity from either eating straight bait, or from eating dead mice. Rat bait works by preventing blood from clotting which is fatal for rats and mice, but can also be fatal for your dog. Despite manufacturer claims that different rat baits are “safe for dogs”, they are not actually pet safe! If your dog is lethargic, having difficulty breathing, continually bleeding without clotting or bruising easily then your dog may be affected by rat bait and must be examined by a veterinarian immediately.

Flinton Races 2014It’s on again! The Annual Flinton Races, to be held Easter Saturday, 19 April, 2014, has grown from strength to strength each year. This year’s race meeting will be no different with a full five race program and $42,000 in prize money up for grabs. The usual bookies’ ring will be in operation where happy punters can bet on the local and interstate races while following the action on the big screens.

Gates open at 11.30am and the day kicks off at noon with a complimentary finger food luncheon courtesy of the Committee. The St George Lions Club will be out in force providing bar and BBQ all day. The Lions Club will also be on deck Sunday morning to provide breakfast for those camping. Please remember to bring your cash as there are no Eftpos facilities available on the banks of the Moonie River!

Guests are able to book a table under the shade of the bough shed; $25 secures you and your guests a table for eight and a bottle of champagne. Please email Cindy Coggan to book - [email protected]. The evening kicks off with an amazing fireworks display and then rolls into the night with a live band and DJ.

For those who are fleet of foot and fit, be ready to contest the Flinton Dash Footrace to be held on the track following the last race. There is $1,000 cash up for grabs and the glory of being written into the Flinton History Books.

To get to Flinton, simply head west on the Moonie Highway; the Flinton turn off is 12km past Westmar on the right hand side. From St George, the turn off is 110km on the left.

This month we are going to focus on another topic that can vastly affect your health, and that is sleep. Firstly, lets test how well you are sleeping with a simple questionnaire. For more than two weeks have you…

• Had trouble getting to sleep?• Been sleeping for fewer hours than usual?• Had poor quality of sleep?• Been tossing and turning at night?• Been waking up regularly during the night?• Been feeling sleepy most of the day?

If you answered yes to any of these then you are not alone. About 15% of Australians are estimated to suffer regular sleep difficulties and another 20% claim to suffer occasional problems sleeping. However, having a good night of sleep is important for maintaining good health. The body uses sleep to recharge from the day’s activities. In addition to this we need quality sleep which is not necessarily a long sleep. Lack of sleep or quality sleep can lead to irritability, lack of energy, poor concentration, fatigue, dizziness, slow reaction time, aches and pains, reduced immune function, decreased general well-being, hallucinations and increased risk of mental disorders such as depression and anxiety. Some common sleep problems and disorders include insomnia, restless legs syndrome, narcolepsy and sleep apnoea.

Some tips to improve your sleep

In the Morning

• Get out of bed as soon as you wake. Don’t go back to sleep.

• Get up at the same time each morning.• Go outside into the fresh air• Do some form of physical activity, like going for a walk.

During the Day

• Do not take naps.• If you are worrying about problems then make time to address them so that

your mind is free of worry and thoughts at night.• Monitor your sleep hours and awake hours by using a diary.• Avoid drinking caffeinated drinks like coffee, tea or energy drinks and at

worst avoid consuming any caffeine after 4pm.• Exercise.

At Night

• Try to go to bed at the same time each night.• Use low light when getting ready for bed; this signals the brain to wind down.• Try to keep all electrical items out of your bedroom. Some studies have

shown that electricity can interfere with brain activity during sleep.• If you have trouble getting to sleep then do a low energy and low stimulation

activity before going to be such as reading or sewing. Avoid mobile phones or television as they cause too much stimulation.

• Also listening to relaxing music can help clear your mind.• Ensure your bedroom is quiet, comfortable and dark.

Question: Should I be using generic over the counter reading glasses?

New research has revealed that over the counter reading glasses with identical magnification in each eye may put old people at risk of a fall and impact on quality of life and even life expectancy.

The main reason for this is that as we get older there is a greater prevalence of anisometropia (difference between the two eyes). This condition is ten times more likely in people over 75 years old compared to children.

Generic over the counter reading glasses don’t account for these differences. Appropriate correction of both eyes is especially important as we get older and less stable on our feet.

The Case for ProbioticsAt one stage or other you have probably heard the term probiotics, (from pro and biota, meaning “for life”), which are good bacteria provided through certain foods and health supplements. Lifestyle factors and antibiotics can upset the balance between good and bad bacteria in the digestive system.

We have had some great results using probiotics for Irritable Bowel Syndrome. For this we recommend a product called IBS support by ethical nutrients. It is kept in the fridge. People are even trying it for more severe illnesses such as Crohn’s disease.

I used to be a bit sceptical about the routine use of probiotics with antibiotics, but the evidence is now beginning to mount up. Various probiotic strains have been shown to prevent and treat antibiotic-induced diarrhoea. In one study, the incidence of diarrhoea was 35% and probiotic use decreased this to 12%. Also none of the probiotic treated patients had C.difficile, which is a more dangerous pathogen. Another study showed that while probiotics still helped return the gut flora to normal if taken after the course of antibiotics, they were more effective when taken during antibiotic treatment.

They have also been shown to reduce the incidence of traveller’s diarrhoea and diarrhoea in children and adults from diverse causes. They continued to be studied for a wide range of gastrointestinal problems.

As they are a naturally occurring thing, most people respond well to them, but we would be cautious in recommending them to people with weakened immune systems such as those undergoing chemotherapy for cancer.

Inner Health Plus is one of the most popular brands. It must be refrigerated, but contains a lactobacillus and bifidobacterium which are not affected by stomach acid. We use the capsules for adults, and it comes as a powder, Inner Health for kids, which can be mixed with water, juice, milk or food or even taken straight from the spoon. The dose is taken twice daily and spaced away from the antibiotic dose for those taking antibiotics, or once daily at other times. We also have a range which is shelf stable. You may think that ingesting the same bacteria in yoghurt would protect them, but probiotic capsules are 22 times stronger. We also have a range of shelf stable probiotics which are especially helpful for those with busy lives who aren’t always near a refrigerator.

So, next time you need antibiotics, you might want to think about adding a probiotic to set things right and avoid this all too common problem.

Interschool PhenomenaIn 1984 the first ever interschool Equestrian Competition was held in Brisbane with riders coming from various parts of the state. Now some thirty years on, we continue to have a large network with Regional, State and National events. Over the past 6 years the National Championships have been held annually in Melbourne, Sydney and Toowoomba. In 2013 Western Australia held the very first Interschool National Championships away from the eastern sea board in Brigadoon, Perth. In October this year the Western Downs Region had the following riders compete Sean Geraghty, Dominic Holtkamp, Hannah Portbury, Elise Crawford, and Emily, Tom, and Sarah Coggan. These riders had to qualify at regional and then state championships before receiving spots in the Queensland team.

300 Athletes represented every state in Australia at the championships which ran from the 2nd to the 5th of October. The event was held at the State Equestrian Centre, located in the Swan Valley some thirty minutes from Perth. The Swan Valley is also home to over one-hundred wineries including Houghtons and Taylors. Rumour has it, many interschool parents did enjoy a session of wine tasting or two. At this time Western Australia was receiving one of its wettest years on record. The hospitality of this state was second to none and they were certainly out to make an impression.

Of the children that gained selection some decided to use pool horses, which always adds an element of difficulty and surprise not knowing your mount. Those that chose to use pool horse have made long lasting friendships with their WA Hosts. Others made the epic journey of 9000km’s to Western Australia and back. The twenty-two horses that made the journey faced a few hurdles with having to cross three state boarders and having to dump feed at four different check stations. However this journey was full of adventure and exciting tales that included:

Sharing a camp site at Eucla with 300 Rebel bikies who were being escorted out of WA by forty undercover cops, playing the Nullarbor Links (the world’s longest golf course), seeing the Western Australian native wildflowers, checking out the super pit in Kalgoorlie and whale watching at the Head of the Bight. One family even managed to have a German countess make the trip back with them. Phillip Coggan described the trip “as an adventure of a lifetime and a must do trip for anyone that has not previously crossed the Nullarbor.”

On a whole the Western Downs Council collected six national titles across the disciplines of Show jumping, Dressage and Combined Training. An amazing effort from these seven riders given the distance that many of them live from regular coaching. After speaking with Theresa Geraghty who coaches brother Sean she said “The interschool national championships have taken us all over Australia to places that I never thought I would go, I just wish that I had known about it when I was school”.

The interschool competition season runs from July to the following July this year the regional championships will be held in Dalby on the 10-12 of May, and all new competitors would be greatly received.

Rates NoticesWestern Downs ratepayers can save 10 per cent on their rates by paying their bill on or before Wednesday 26 March.

Spokesperson for Corporate Support, Councillor Ian Rasmussen said residents will be receiving their rates notices in the mail this week and are encouraged to take advantage of the several convenient payment methods and discount on offer.

"The half-yearly rate notices for the period 1 January to 30 June 2014 have now been issued and if ratepayers pay their accounts in full, on or before 26 March, they will receive a 10 per cent discount," he said.

"Council offers a number of easy and convenient methods to help with payment, including electronic payments. But please be mindful that rates notices are separate to the water notices that were recently issued. This means there are different biller codes, so if you're paying electronically be sure to refer to the front of your rates notice to use the correct details.

"If however customers feel they might have difficulty paying on time, they can simply contact our Customer Contact Centre before 26 March for help in arranging an instalment plan."

Cr Rasmussen said residents are also reminded that this is the first rates notice on which they'll see the new State Emergency Management Fire and Rescue (EMFR) Levy.

"In July 2013 the State's Urban Fire Levy was reformed and expanded to the Emergency Management Fire and Rescue Levy to ensure a more sustainable funding base for all emergency services," he said.

"As of 1 January this year, Council became a collection agency for this new State Emergency Management Fire and Rescue Levy and this will be the first rates notice that you'll see this additional levy listed. Please note that the early payment discount offer does not apply to this levy."

Jandowae Student Makes South-West Tennis Team for 2014Mitch Tucker from Jandowae Prep-10 State School was selected in the 2014, 19 years and under South West Tennis Team. A Team of four boys and four girls were selected at the South West trials at Chinchilla on Friday 21st February. Mitch will now compete in the State Championships in Caloundra from 13th March to 16th March.

Geographically the South West School Sport Region extends from the Jandowae area in the east to Hebel in the south, west to Eromanga and north as far as Tambo - Taroom. South West School Sport is part of the Darling Downs

and South West education region. The students who participate in South West School Sport activities at a district, regional or state level come from all sectors including primary, secondary, special schools and schools of distance education.

Nelson’s Family Meats and Jandowae and District Tennis Association will proudly sponsor Mitch for the SW Team.

Mitch was not only selected for the SW Tennis team on Friday, but also received selection as the 2014 Jandowae Prep-10 School Vice-Captain on the same day.

Growing up in Brisbane, Kate moved to Jandowae in 1999 and is the newest member of the Western Downs Magazine Team. She has been involved with many community groups in Jandowae, and enjoys small country town life. Kate brings with her an interest in photography.

Aja was born in the Czech Republic and met her husband in England. They now have two cheeky little girls, living and working in their family farming business growing watermelons and breeding Angus Cattle near Chinchilla.
