In the pursuit of Striving for Excellence Bapco receives another feather in its cap for the successful implementation of its Waste Water Treatment Plant Project. At the recently concluded Global Water Summit 2014 held in Paris. Bapco received the” Distinction award for Industrial Water Project of the Year” competing against

similar relevant and innovative projects commissioned in 2013 all over the world. The award recognises the most impressive technical or environmental achievements in the field of industrial water. Each year, the coveted Global Water Awards are presented

at the Global Water Summit, the major business conference for the water industry worldwide. Earlier this year the Project achieved “Sustainable Project of the Year 2014” MEED award for Bahrain nation and is in the race for the same award for the entire GCC region. Built at a total cost of $120 million, as part of Bapco’s environment initiatives, the Project facility treats 4,400 US gallons per minute of refinery wastewater. The four-stage membrane bio-reactor (MBR) process treats water to industrial reuse standard, meeting very stringent nitrogen and phosphorus discharge limits. As one of the largest MBR systems ever installed in the petrochemicals and refining industry, the plant is a shining demonstration of how cutting-edge treatment technologies can meet the stringent requirements of environmental regulations with difficult-to-treat wastewater streams. The process sequence allows for the reuse of spent caustic – one of the most challenging waste products in the refinery

system – as a carbon source for the biological de nitrification stage. This eliminates the need for expensive spent caustic treatment and disposal facilities. The Plant utilizes innovative and energy efficient two-stage plate heat exchange cooling system using cooling towers with plant permeate and a lithium bromide chiller (abundantly available steam is used as prime mover) for adjustable temperature control, letting the plant deal with extreme ambient temperatures. With this Project both Bapco and Bahrain are put on the world map for using innovative technologies in env i ronmenta l initiatives.

Continuing its persistent efforts towards fostering educational endeavours in the kingdom and as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) role in Bahrain, the Bahrain Petroleum Company “Bapco” has recently sponsored the University of Bahrain (UoB) College of Engineering’s “Bapco’s Process Instrumentation & Control Engineering Students’ Award”. In this regard, Bapco’s General Manager – Human Resources & Administration, Mr. Ghassan Al Muhanna recently received the College’s Head of the Chemical Engineering Department, Dr. Shaker Mohammed Haji, and presented a sponsorship cheque to Dr. Haji. Mr. Al Muhanna commented “Bapco regularly sponsors educational institutions in

Bahrain which is in line with its commitment towards fostering the kingdom’s educational sector. The company is proud to sponsor this award, which is expected to enhance the students’ learning experience greatly.” The award was suggested by Bapco engineers, who were members of the PICENG Programme’s Industrial Advisory Committee (PIAC) a few years ago. The first student award ceremony was held in 2009 and sponsored by Bapco to encourage the students to excel in their studies. The award clearly had a positive impact on the students, the programme, and the alumni. Also present at the cheque presentation was Bapco’s Acting Manager – Public Relations Mr. Ali Yacoub Al Meftah.

As part of its commitment to continuous improvement and striving for excellence, Bapco commenced updating its emergency preplans utilising available technology such as the Geographical Information System (GIS). GIS technology provides Bapco with highly sophisticated preplans, which illustrate all fire-related hardware in relation to process equipment. I say “rewarding” because working under pressure and adapting to the challenges of an emergency is my comfort zone. While others may panic and lose good judgment under those circumstances, I remain calm and seem to relish the chance to be there for others in that great time of need.• Whattrainingprogrammeshaveyouattended? I have been afforded the opportunity to attend several training programmes offered by Bapco and on the island, that address the unique aspects of refinery firefighting and safety. I believe it is opportunities like these that mould me into a better Fire Chief under this venue.• Kindlyshareyourthoughtsonsafetyregulationsin

Bapco. As the Fire Chief, I can assure you the safety section as well as our entire department is dedicated to safety 24/7. Our Manager refuses to accept any corner-cutting when it comes to safety and that mindset is passed down to all of us.• Whatareyourthoughtsoneventsandactivitiesheld

inthecompany?I am impressed at the many company events geared towards bringing people together in Bapco. Whether it is sporting events, bake sales, social activities in Awali or other gathering opportunities, there never seems to be an end to the offerings. Bapco also has programmes geared towards the health of our employees along with some very important health screenings. This shows the company’s dedication to the health of all who call Bapco “home”.• WhathaveyoulearntfromyourjobinBapco?I have learnt a great deal about the technical aspects of firefighting when it comes to refineries. I have also learnt a lot overall, about the refining business and the oil & gas industry.• Tell us about your best, most challenging and

and being able to work with them on a daily basis makes each day unique and interesting. The most challenging is ensuring all the firefighters are prepared for any emergency. Because there are so many possible emergent scenarios possible we have a constant readiness level that must be maintained. My most treasured memories, to date, would have to be the many friends from many different parts of the world I have had the opportunity to meet and become friends with. There is such a unique opportunity to learn so much about so many countries here via personal interactions.• Whatareyourhobbies.I enjoy a variety of sports. My favorite sport is Jal-Alai. This is not a well-known sport on this side of the world. I was a professional Jai-Alai player and played on my days off from the fire department from 1982-1985. I enjoy nearly every sport there is, both as a player and observer.• Doyouhaveamessageforthereaders?I would like to add that while some may work for Bapco for many years and some only for short tenures, the opportunity should not be missed to learn so much about different cultures. Books and television cannot replace the rewards of human contact coupled with so many interesting stories and facts about individuals’ homelands. I have enjoyed my tenure with Bapco and hope to continue. When my time with Bapco does end I will be very grateful to those who took the time to further educate me in the technical aspects of the refining business.

Current Energy Market Trends

Dear Employees,We would like to give you a brief description of the recently publicised HeartBleed bug, along with some advice as to how you should respond to it, both at work in Bapco, and in your personal Internet use. What is it?HeartBleed is the name given to a bug that affects many major Internet sites, but specifically those that use a free Web Server called Apache to serve their users.Last week, Security specialists identified that a bug in this software meant that a hacker could easily see information being transmitted to and from users, even if they were supposedly using what is known as ‘SSL encryption’ to hide login information, etc. This means that if you have a username and password on the Websites affected, someone could already have your password, or in some cases even credit card and other information. What sites are affected? Many of the Internet’s most popular sites could have been affected, like:• FaceBook• Instagram• Pinterest

• Tumblr• Twitter• Google• Gmail• Yahoo• Yahoo Mail• Etsy• GoDaddy• Flickr• MineCraft• NetFlix• SoundCloud• YouTube• Box• DropBox• GitHub• Wikipedia• WordPressWhat should I do?If you have a username and password at the above sites, you should change it immediately. Most of them have already been patched or are being patched now, so once you change your password you should be safe. You should also keep an eye on your credit and debit card usage, and be ready to alert your bank if you see any transactions that are not yours. What about other sites? If you wish to check whether your Online Banking or other Personal sites are affected, it is quite easy

to do. (Remember that this only applies to Secure sites, those that use HTTPS:// in their names and give you the “padlock” symbol to tell you that encryption is being used). You can simply type the website name (e.g. www.google.com) into the following web page (verified by ITD):https://lastpass.com/heartbleed/Lastpass will tell you when the Site was last safe, and advise you if you need to change your password. You should do this by going directly to the Website in question. What else should I do?(1) PasswordsPlease make sure that you do not use your Bapco password on any other Websites. If it is

compromised on one site, hackers will automatically take a guess that this is your password on other sites, including ours.Use different passwords for the different sites you visit. If you are not good at remembering passwords, then it is OK to write them down if you are at home, and keep them in a safe place. This stops one password giving the hackers access to all of your sites. And remember, simple passwords are easy for hackers to crack! You should try and make it as complex as possible; use letters and numbers at least, and if possible throw in lower and upper case letters to make words less guessable, e.g.“L3tTeR$” instead of “”letters”, or “P@$$W0rD” instead of “password”!(2) Phishing emailsBecause HeartBleed has received lots of publicity, it is certain that there will be a lot of Phishing messages that will try and convince you that you should login and change your password – only they will be using a fake copy of the Website in question. Please DO NOT click on links just because the email looks convincing. It is better that you go to the proper site itself and change your password

there. Some of the notices you receive may be valid, but you should ALWAYS go to the original site rather than clicking a link in an email, just to be safe.(3) Google ChromeIf you use Google Chrome as your browser, you can install a free Extension which will check the sites you visit and tell you if they are vulnerable or not:h t tps : / / chrome.google .com/webstore/detail/chromebleed/eeoekjnjgppnaegdjbcafdggilajhpicIf you have further questions on HeartBleed, Bapco’s Computer Security Management and Response Team (CSMART) will be happy to answer your queries. Just send an email to [email protected] and your Information Technology Department will respond as soon as we can.Courtesy: Bapco IT department

Saudi Aramco last Thursday raised its official selling prices (OSPs) for all its crudes, lifting in May and bound for Asia, by $0.20/bbl to $0.40/bbl over April OSPs. Details are shown in the below table. Aramco’s decision to increase prices was partially in line with traders’ expectation after Dubai backwardation strengthened in late March relatively to late February. However, refinery maintenance in Asia-Pacific is anticipated to peak in June, a factor that may have capped any further price increases and could continue to weigh on spot buying during April. Dubai’s Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC) has awarded US contractor KBR a

front-end engineering design (FEED) contract for upgrading its condensate splitters plant at Jebel Ali. The upgrade fits in with a growing trend of refinery revamps across the Middle East to meet rising domestic fuel demand, as well as tightening fuel specifications. KBR says the upgrade “will add new processing units (jet and diesel hydrotreaters and isomerization unit) and will lead to production of several Euro V grade products such as high octane gasoline, low-sulfur jet fuel and ultra-low sulfur diesel. ENOC has not disclosed the value of the contract, capacities of the new units or the project schedule. As Saudi Aramco’s 6mn tons/year

petrochemicals capacity program gathers momentum and its eyes targeting East Asia with a view to securing market share. Although some of the products from two giant plants under development at Jubail and Rabigh will be directed towards local plastics converters, the bulk of the output will be Asia-bound. Jubail and Rabigh are schedule to start in 2015 and 2016 respectivelyThe lever for the big petrochemicals push will be its Aramco Asia Company subsidiary, which comprises three units – Aramco Far East Business Services Company Ltd, Aramco Asia Japan Company and Aramco Asia Korea Company — with offices in Beijing, Tokyo

and Seoul, respectively. These offer a range of support services, particularly the marketing of oil and chemical products and the management of investments. The ordinance under the law “Sophisticated Methods of Energy Supply Structure” by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) is commonly referred as the METI Ordinance. Japanese refineries increased their ratio between heavy-oil cracking and CDU capacity from 11% to 13% by 1 Apr 2014; refiners could either upgrade their heavy-oil cracking units or reduce their crude distillation unit (CDU). Therefore, refiners had significantly reduced their CDU capacities because they could not justify the major investments to meet METI Ordinance (first phase).A second phase of the METI refining ordinance is currently in the works, with a targeted compliance deadline for refiners of

end-March 2017.A sub-committee was established earlier this year and has already reached a consensus on several key points, which will be officially recommended to the METI Minister in due course: • The definition of heavy-oil cracking that METI used for Phase I of the Ordinance will be redefined. • METI will set a further target for Japanese refinery improvements. • There will be incentives for refineries in close proximity to merge and/or oil refineries and petrochemical plants to integrate.Crude:Benchmark crude prices averaged last week; from 31st March to 4th April 2014; as follows:

Safety Alert

Eye Injuryto Contractor Employee

Safety Fact

Bapco’s Environment, Health and Safety Committee (EHSC) committee conducted their monthly meeting in April, where they discussed the following issues:• There were two lost time injuries during March 2014, one

suffered by a Bapco employee when he lost his balance while disembarking from the company pick up which resulted in a Supracondylar Fracture of his left arm and the second suffered by an MCSC contractor who sustained burn injuries when he was splashed with hot steam condensate whilst opening a man way of a condensate drum in No. 4 Sulphur Recovery Unit (4SRU). This particular injury is more significant due to its relation to process safety violation. In addition, there were 4 First Aid injuries during March 2014.

• Both the LTI’s during March 2014 are being investigated and lessons learnt will be shared amongst all employees .In addition the EHSC discussed all the LTIs during 2014 and it was agreed to take all the necessary measures to prevent the recurrence of all injuries and reverse this unacceptable trend by applying all the safety management tools available to us.

• There were 8 road traffic accidents out of which 6 involved Bapco drivers and 2 contractor drivers. Although, the majority of these accidents were not due to fault of Bapco drivers, the need for defensive driving was re-iterated as it would have a positive impact.

• 32 minor Process Incidents of which 10 have been PSE

tiered were recorded during March 2014. This includes 8 Tier 3 incidents and 1 Tier 4 incident. YTD, there have been 103 process related incidents out of which 1 has been classified as a significant incident.

• The Environmental Performance Index (EPI) is 3.9 versus the target of 7 mainly due to relatively poor performance of API separators and planned flaring during the shutdown activities. The API separators have now been cleaned up resulting in an improved performance of the Induced Air Floatation (IAF) Units.

• The composition of the EHSC was reviewed with a view to making it more streamlined and effective.

• The new Biological Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) has won the project of the year Distinction Award at the recently held Global Water Submit held in Paris, France. Well done to MEP for this achievement.

• The Petra Solar Panel Project won the Award under the category “Excellence in Environmental Projects and Products” at the recently held Off-Shore Arabia Conference & Exhibition held in Dubai and organised by the Regional Clean Sea Organization (RECSO)

These awards are clear testament to Bapco’s commitment towards the protection of the environment and sustainable development and its efforts to go beyond compliance by implementing such projects. Many Congratulations to the WWTP & Petra Solar project teams and all the supporting staff.

Summer is right around the corner, and the temperature has begun to soar in Bahrain. Live by the following skincare tips to have healthy skin all summer long!1. Water is your best friendSpending more time in high temperatures outdoors can lead to internal dehydration, which could result in headaches and dizzy spells. To combat dehydration, drink a minimum of eight glasses of water a day as this keeps you refreshed whilst importantly, maintaining your body’s moisture balance. Water is also undoubtedly effective at detoxifying your system. However, do take note that water in its purest form has the most benefits, and consuming beverages like coffee and tea do not hydrate; in fact, they do the opposite! In addition to drinking water at home, it is highly recommended that you carry a bottle with you in your car and when you spend time in the outdoors.2. Don’t Underestimate SunscreenUnfortunately, sunscreen is often overlooked and it is a myth that such products are only intended for people with sensitive skin. There are a wide range of sun protection creams available in the market, and these days you can even find products to suit your specific skin type. Choose a sunscreen cream of a high SPF (Sun Protection Factor), to keep your skin well protected. It is also important that you re-apply the product every few hours, and sufficiently. Of course, the best thing you can do, although

not always viable, is to stay out of the sun completely. 3. Manage DamageUltraviolet light causes photo aging in the form of brown spots, coarse skin and wrinkles, upon exposure to the sun. And for those of us who still don’t wear sunscreen before braving the summer heat, there is a way out of suffering sore and painful skin. Skin cooling gels and

products are widely available and can help fight peeling, redness and inflammation. You should focus on applying the product to the parts of your skin that have turned reddish or pink, as this indicates that the sun has taken its toll on your skin! Once again, like the sunscreen cream, be generous in your application – it is your skin, after all. Protecting your skin from sun damage also keeps long-term skin diseases at bay.4. ExfoliateExfoliating your skin removes dead skin and debris to prevent clogging of your pores, and also improves hydration through the usage of toners and moisturisers. Before you use any products on your skin, make sure to exfoliate. Follow it up with a hydrating cream and sunscreen lotion for well-protected skin.

Oral & Dental Care Activities Continue in AprilAs part of Bapco’s Medical Services Department’s health activities, the Oral and Dental Week continued in April, in line with the campaign titled “Oral Care is the Secret of Beauty and Health”.Employees from the Health Promotion Unit conducted field trips to various departments in the company with the aim of raising health awareness among employees and their families, which contributed effectively in fostering the health of individuals and the community. The event

comes as part of a series of health events and programmes that the unit is working on and is scheduled to implement throughout the company over the coming years as they are believed to bring great benefit to all employees.

GENERALINFORMATIONLocation: 4A Crude Unit Nature of Incident: Lost Time Injury Date of Incident: 6 April 2014INCIDENTSUMMARYDuring the Turnaround & Inspection Shutdown of the 4A Crude Unit, a Contractor employee twisted his left ankle while he was descending from a walkway into the Preflash/Atmos Pipe Trench. The employee was involved in the de-blinding of the steam system at the unit limit, where he stepped into the edge of an open drain channel located adjacent to the first step on the walkway, thus twisting his left ankle in the process.CAUSESImmediate Causes: 1. Stepping in an exposed drain channel that has not been covered. RootCauses:1. The drain channel layout and walkway stair-landing not meeting design standards.RECOMMENDATIONANDLESSONSLEARNTLessons learnt: 1. Focus on surroundings while moving in unfamiliar areas. 2. Always be conscious of your steps to avoid trips and falls. 3. Follow OSOOL #2: Always work in a safe and controlled condition.

4. Follow OSOOL #8: Always address abnormal conditions and never let them become accepted as normal. Recommendations: Plant Engineering Department to survey walking / working surfaces (in particular, the design of landing of staircases, walkways, and drain channels in pipe trenches) to identify hazardous conditions. FH&S (Occupational Hygiene Section) to prepare a plan for lighting illumination survey for existing old units and carry out periodic inspection of adequacy of lighting illumination during Turnaround & Inspection. FH&S will consider introducing and encouraging wearing half-boot safety shoes for Bapco and Contractor employees.

While Descending from Walkway

In line with its constant endeavours aimed at fostering and improving the health of company and contractor employees, and as part of its continuous environment, health and safety policy, Bapco has recently conducted a Run and Walk event on Saturday, 26 April 2014 at the Awali football pitch. The three kilometer walk was held for employees and their families and was attended by people of both genders and of all ages. In attendance was Bapco’s General Manager – Maintenance, Mr. Khalid Sabbagh. The event underlines Bapco’s commitment towards its EHS policy, and witnessed the enthusiastic participation of many company employees.

Run and Walk Event Held in Awali

• Contact lenses may be a better cosmetic option for some as compared to wearing glasses, but they require their share of precautions as well. Following proper lens care can help you avoid those nasty eye infections.

• Wash your hands with soap and water, and dry them well before handling contact lenses.

• Minimise contact with water – make sure to remove your contact lenses before you go swimming.

• Always use only the prescribed contact lens solution – other antiseptic liquids should not be used to substitute your lens solution.

• Replace your contact lenses after their prescribed time of use. For example, a pair of lenses intended for 30 days’ use shouldn’t be used for six weeks just because they have not done any damage in the past.

• Rub your contact lenses gently with your fingers, and then soak them in the prescribed solution. This will ensure superior cleaning.

• Your contact lenses’ case is no less important. Rinse the case with fresh solution and leave it to dry. The lens case also needs to be replaced periodically.

• Do not reuse your contact lens solution. It contains dust, protein and other dirt every time you soak your used lenses, so you would obviously not want the dirt to reattach itself to your lenses every time.

• If you experience redness, tearing, swelling or pain, remove the contact lenses immediately and get your eyes checked by a doctor.

• Never sleep with your contact lenses on, or expose them to heat or fire as this has the potential to cause permanent blindness.

ILM Level 2 Delegates Learn to Plan and Monitor Multiple Projects

Training & Development

During the month of April, 30 delegates who completed their first written assignment on time progressed to the next stage of their 8-month Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) Level 2 Certificate in Leadership and Team Skills programme. Senior Management Development Specialist Neil Porter got the delegates to complete the Belbin Team role inventory to identify their preferred role in a team, and over the coming month, they will complete this with their teams back at work. They also learnt about the stages of team formation and completed two case studies. On the second day they heard

from former ILM delegate Khalid Abdulla who shared his experiences of how they plan and monitor IT projects and how he used the skills learnt from ILM 2 and 3 to resolve a problem and save Bapco a large amount of money. Finally, each group was split into 3 teams and given 11 tasks to complete in 25 minutes. They had 40 minutes to design and plan the construction of a tower and prioritise the other tasks in terms of urgency and importance. The tasks were allocated to different team members based on their abilities and then the teams raced against the clock to complete all the agreed tasks on time to the required quality standard.

Bapco’s Oil Processing Department (South) has completed shutdown and major maintenance inthe period of March – April 2014 in cooperation with Shutdown and Major Maintenance, and other engineering units. Three units were closed during the shutdown process- 4A Crude Unit which is the biggest crude distillation unit, the 5VDU unit and the Keromerox unit, in addition to a number of other units in OPD (S) and other units related to Power &Utilities. This shutdown is the biggest in the (HUB-2) units in the history of the company. The biggest challenge for the company during the shutdown process was to control and monitor over 1500 Bapco and Contractor employees engaged in the inspection and maintenance of different units. Time was also another major challenge as the plan included the shutdown and inspection of around 600 machines, pumps, vacuum

units, heat exchangers and other equipemtn in the company from mid-March to mid-April, with the environment and safety as the top priority. The commitment of all parties adhering to safety procedures has resulted in achieving the target within the allotted time and budget. In addition to maintenance done in the units, there was also an upgrade of the system in the Control Room, which was upgraded to the Centum VP System to enhance the monitoring system and reliability. The shutdown involved effective planning, monitoring and risk assessment studies in addition to the availability of all supervisors, which enhanced teamwork and accountability. Upon completion, Bapco’s Management thanked all the concerned departments and employees for their diligent efforts.

The auto rickshaw, otherwise known as an “auto”, a “rick” or a “tuk-tuk” is a three-wheeled means of public transport predominantly used on roads in India, China, Thailand, and parts of Africa and Europe. A standard auto rickshaw can accommodate a total of three to four people (including the driver) and is generally open on both sides, unlike a car. Auto rickshaws have often been described as “a fusion of a motorcycle and a car”. In some countries, auto rickshaws are so prevalent that it eliminates the need for many people to own a car. The body of the auto rickshaw is made of sheet metal, and the vehicle consists of a canvas roof

and three wheels. The interior is divided into two parts; the front seats the driver, and the back is capable of accommodating two to three passengers at once. Auto rickshaws are driven with handlebars as opposed to a steering wheel and usually operate like taxis do, with a metre which records the distance run during a trip and the payment due. Newer models of the auto rickshaw run on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to minimise environmental pollution. So the next time you visit an Asian country, be sure to

enjoy a ride in one of these zippy little automobiles – a memorable ride is pretty much guaranteed!
