The holidays are a time for families and friends to gather and share memories. While growing up, Thanksgiving and Christmas were my fa-vorite holidays. Every Thanksgiving we would wake up and watch the Macy’s Day Parade and then would pile into our car and head to Aunt Mary’s House. Upon arrival we would say hello to all of the family and jump back into the car with all of my cousins and head to the ice skating rink where we would spend the next 3 or 4 hours building up an appetite; I think all of our parents did it to wear off some of our energy. We all have our favorite Holiday meals but my Aunt Mary’s meatballs were the best. Of course we still had all of your tradi-tional Thanksgiving fare. We would snack on meatball sandwiches, watch football, and play board games while waiting for the turkey to be finished.

The next day my family would wake up and head out to the Christmas tree farm to pick out our Christmas tree. It was always a battle because I wanted the biggest, fattest, fullest tree and

my sisters always wanted the “Charlie Brown Trees”, and Dad wanted a tree that could be re-planted. To add to the challenge, trees in a field look smaller than they will in a living room! We would usually compromise and pick a tree in the middle that could be replanted. The next step was getting this tree tied down to the roof of the car and then home. Once we arrived at home it was always fun trying to figure out how to get a 7ft x 4ft tree in the front door. This was before they had netting on the trees. Ah, the tree is finally in the house, dad and I go out to the attic and I pass down the trunk of Christmas ornaments, lights, and the million other holiday decorations we accumulated over the years, including our life-size Santa sleigh, and reindeer. The rest of daylight, Dad and i would spend decorating the house like Clark Griswold since i always wanted to win the city decorating contest.

Later that night we would all start decorating the tree as a family. While my mom was string-ing the lights on the tree, the rest of us would

all pick out our ornaments, reminiscing about when we made them or who bought it for us and all of the meanings each ornament had. I remember this one story that my parents would always tell.

It was four days before Christmas, my sister and i were 3 and 4 playing in the family room where we had a little tikes sliding board, when my my mom ran up the stairs for 2 minutes to answer the phone. When she came back down she found my sister and i surrounded by thousands of pieces of the ceramic nativity scene. my mom then sent us both to our rooms, cleaned up the mess, and undecorated the entire house. (What had taken 3 days to decorate was down in 2 hours). Later that evening My father came home,looked around and asked what happened to all of the decorations. my mom told him there would be no Christmas Santa Claus was not coming to this house. My dad then spent the rest of the night separating the pieces and glu-ing each person back to together as best as he could. To this day a wise men still only has half of a head. baby jesus has a crack right down the middle and the rest of them look like a mosa-ics. We did have christmas after all that year my mom said 4am christmas morning she set up the tree with no lights or ornaments, and when we woke up the next morning Santa Claus had arrived but he had just left a few toys. After all

Santa Claus doesn’t bring toys to bad girls and boys.

The next month we waited anxiously for Christmas to arrive each day going to the advent cal-endar pulling out the piece of choco-late. during that month we would go have our pictures taken with Santa Claus, ride the train around the north pole, Christmas Shop with mom and Grandma, and still a holiday tradition drive around looking at all the houses deco-rated for Christmas. We would sit around watch the christmas spe-cials on TV, ( A charlie Brown Christmas, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman and as i got older A christmas Story which is still my favorite today.

On Christmas Eve my entire family and extend-ed family would go over to my grandparents

house for dinner and our annual gift exchange that would last for hours.

After the gift exchange we would light the luminaries,
