the internet of clothes
TRANSCRIPT
Many of us love our fashion, but we have a problem…
We consume too many clothes: 400% more than 20 years ago. Just 20% are worn regularly. @Maker_Monday
It creates problems for agriculture…
2.5% of land is used for growing cotton but uses 16% of pesticides. @Maker_Monday
Clothing workers suffer high exploitation…
Nearly 80% are women working long hours in poor conditions.
Typical pay is around €60pm – well below a living wage. @Maker_Monday
The Internet of Clothes can address the challenges via a connected wardrobe
Each item ofclothing is taggedwith a washableRFID chip
Clothing items arelogged in the database(frequency of wear, season, etc) & iscombined withweather data
Based on thefrequency, weather& occasion, clothesask to be wornby sending an alertand tweeting
The wardrobe(or bedroom door)has an RFID readerwhere clothes aretagged each timethey pass by
The RFID readerconnects to a WiFi enabled Raspberry Pi
Unworn clothesautomaticallycontact a charityto be recycled
@Maker_Monday
Garments become ‘aware’ and ask to be worn each day…
If they’re ignored, the clothes automatically donate themselves for recycling. @Maker_Monday
The Internet of Clothes will be opened source, to create a network of wardrobes...
We want to encourage lower consumption of clothes, and greater use of garments from ethical, sustainable sources.
