Editor’s Note

The Devil Is Real

By René MalgoInternational Editor-in-Chief

In an interview, horror author StephenKing said, “The evil is in us. The older Iget, the less I think that there is some-

thing like an external devilish influence; itcomes from the people.” In a certain way,he is right. Our Lord Jesus Christ said: “Forit is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come...” (Mark 7:21). It istrue: the evil is in us and comes out fromus, and therefore we need salvation, “thewashing of rebirth and renewal by the HolySpirit” (Titus 3:5). But this is only one side. The other one is: the devil is real. It is re-

markable that Stephen King, who writes insuch detail about what is evil, denies its ex-istence. In our Western culture this is in-deed nothing new or special. At the time ofthe Reformation, many Protestant theolo-gians thoroughly did away with the mysti-cal thinking and superstition of the MiddleAges. That was positive. But many went toofar. In 1691, the Dutch Reformed preacherBalthasar Bekker published the book DeBetoverde Weereld (The World Bewitched). Init he made fun of witchcraft, witches, ghostsand demons. He also questioned the exis-tence of an actual devil. The book became ahit. The British historian Jonathan Israelcalled it one of the “key books of the earlyEnlightenment”; in Europe it was the begin-ning of the end of believing that there is areal-world devil.

The French author Charles Baudelaireonce wrote the famous words: “The finestcunning of the devil is to convince us thathe does not exist.” Although often quoted—even in Hollywood movies—very few letthemselves be warned from this. Hardyanyone still believes in a real devil, and evenBible-believers are in danger of being influ-enced by the surrounding culture, as theytry to be loving at the expense of truth. Es-pecially today, when we conservative Chris-tians try to separate ourselves from theexcesses of some Charismatic circles, it canhappen that we “throw out the baby withthe bathwater,” as the popular phrase aptlyexpresses. We mostly behave as if the devil and his

dangerous machinations did not exist at all.The German Reformer Martin Luther, whowas strongly influenced by medieval think-ing, knew about the devil’s existence. Hegave the newly formed evangelicals of histime tips on how they could win the battleagainst Satan.Revelation 12 describes the devil pictori-

ally as a big, furious, fiery red, seven-headed, ten-horned, water-spewing dragonwith seven crowns. He is a powerful enemy;indeed, he is so powerful that we cannotwithstand him in our own strength. Inter-estingly, exactly someone like Stephen Kingseems to understand this instinctively.

EDITOR’s NOTE

Judging by the words of the theologian Roger Olson, who wrote an articleabout King’s horror novel Revival, King writes only of a hell in the hereafter, ruled by terrible evil creatures, who torture and enslave people, includingchildren. Revival claims to be about a Christian revivalist preacher, but he isas far away from the Gospel as possible, Olson soberingly writes. And in fact, when we speak about the devil and his power, and in so do-

ing exclude Christ and His Gospel, then only the victory of the evil one re-mains. But the good news is that the great fiery red dragon has beendefeated, and that by a slaughtered Lamb, as Revelation 5 shows. What a contrast: the Lamb crushed the dragon’s head, as Satan pierced

His heel. Jesus Christ took upon Himself the sins of the world, died, androse from the dead. With this He snatched away the power of death fromthe devil; He delivered from Satan’s claws all those who would come to be-lieve in Him. Jesus is the Victor! And that we must always keep in mind nomatter how massive the raging of the enemy may become—and how real heis. His days are numbered—“his time is short” (Revelation 12:12)—and He isto come who will crush Satan under our feet. Maranatha!

How Great IsGod? – Part IReinhold Federolf

The Bible reports again and again of clouds in which God appears. Thisis not about normal clouds as we see in the sky, but clouds which pointto God’s glory. A study and an encouragement for Christians.

Page 7: The International Prophetic Voice for the Endtimes … · 2017-03-02 · • Tactics of new atheists • The intelligence of ancient man ... and a thriving faith in the face of a

It was evening. We reached our destina-tion, a church in the northwest ofBrazil. I had to preach a sermon there

on the return of Jesus, signs of the endtimes, and our behavior as Christians. Thepastor gave a brief introduction and thensaid suddenly, “Jesus could come thisevening because there are clouds in thesky.” I almost laughed out loud but I keptsilent because after 40 years of missionarywork, we are used to a lot of things. But hiswords about the clouds were somehowshocking; they showed the degree of igno-rance even among Christian leaders. In Brazil we have blue skies for months

on end, so that the land is transformed intoa dry half-desert. This was the reason forthe words of the pastor. He was referring tothe classic verses about the rapture of thebelievers, “Then we which are alive and re-main shall be caught up together with themin the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air:and so shall we ever be with the Lord” (1Thessalonians 4:17). The question thatarises here is, will the rapture be like an air-craft taking off, which gradually disappearsin the clouds? It is worth taking a few min-utes to think about the “clouds in the sky”and to contemplate on the greatness ofGod. In Exodus 13:21, it says of the people of

Israel that God led out of Egypt, “And theLord went before them by day in a pillar ofa cloud, to lead them the way; and by nightin a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go byday and night.” It was indeed about a cer-tain visible presence of God, as Exodus14:24 clearly says, “And it came to pass, thatin the morning watch the Lord looked untothe host of the Egyptians through the pillarof fire and of the cloud, and troubled thehost of the Egyptians.” God continually protected Israel and

punished the Egyptians, “And the angel ofGod, which went before the camp of Israel, removed and went behind them; and the

pillar of the cloud went from before theirface, and stood behind them: and it camebetween the camp of the Egyptians and thecamp of Israel; and it was a cloud and dark-ness to them, but it gave light by night tothese: so that the one came not near theother all the night” (Exodus 14:19-20). GodHimself looked out of the cloud to theEgyptians, intervened supernaturally tohinder the imminent attack of the enemy, and made it clear that He was fighting forIsrael. For critical thinkers it is especiallyemphasized, “Thus the Lord saved Israelthat day out of the hand of the Egyptians;and Israel saw the Egyptians dead upon thesea shore” (verse 30). They could all see itand be amazed at how wonderfully Godhad liberated Israel from Egypt. This divine cloud means that God made

His presence visible in one place, “And itcame to pass, as Moses entered into thetabernacle, the cloudy pillar descended, and stood at the door of the tabernacle, and the Lord talked with Moses” (Exodus33:9). Here God legitimized His servantMoses, with the impressive and for allthose in the camp visible descent of the pil-lar of cloud. It symbolized the meeting ofGod with Moses, when He spoke with himin the sanctuary as with a friend face to face(Exodus 33:11; Deuteronomy 34:10).At the beginning of the wandering in the

wilderness, Moses wanted to see the gloryof God, “And he said, I beseech thee, showme thy glory…And he said, Thou canst notsee my face: for there shall no man see me,and live…And it shall come to pass, whilemy glory passeth by, that I will put thee in aclift of the rock, and will cover thee withmy hand while I pass by: and I will takeaway mine hand, and thou shalt see myback parts: but my face shall not be seen”(Exodus 33:18, 20, 22-23). We must con-sider this “filtered” and covered, dimmedpresence in the context of a few otherverses and try to understand it. “And the

Lord spake unto you out of the midst of thefire: ye heard the voice of the words, butsaw no similitude; only ye heard a voice”(Deuteronomy 4:12). Jesus declared, “Noman hath seen God at any time; the onlybegotten Son, which is in the bosom of theFather, he hath declared him” (John 1:18).The apostle John said the same thing, “Noman hath seen God at any time” (l John4:12). Paul shows the need for a total trans-formation to even come near God, for“flesh and blood cannot inherit the king-dom of God; neither doth corruption in-herit incorruption” (1 Corinthians 15:50).“God is a Spirit: and they that worship

him must worship him in spirit and intruth” (John 4:24). The Bible shows us thatthe living God is neither material nor tem-poral, but He is Spirit and He is timeless.

And this God created the material universeand also physical “time.” This element ofour sense of time and space is somethingcreated, just as material and energy. GodHimself is much greater than this createdcosmos: He is eternal. That which the Bible describes as “eter-

nal” is a timeless state, and in a timelessstate, in perpetual simultaneity, there is no“before.” The question is superfluous, there-fore, “Who created God?” or, “Where didGod get the information from?” The eternal, omnipresent, omniscient and endlessly in-telligent God was always there. This meansalso that everything is known to Him, with-out exception. There is not the smallest itemthat He does not know. He knows, for in-stance, every single molecule in our bodies,in the sun, in the Andromeda Galaxy—yes,

4This element of our sense of time and space is somethingcreated, just as material and energy. God Himself is much greaterthan this created cosmos: He is eternal.

of every single molecule in the whole universe, He knows the exact and precisecondition. This is what “omniscient” or un-ending intelligence means. This is the kindof God we are dealing with, as the scientistand evangelist Dr. Werner Gitt once ex-plained. But these things cannot be scientifi-cally analyzed, as they are not material. They can only be grasped in faith! ThePsalmist exclaims in amazement, “He telleththe number of the stars; he calleth them allby their names. Great is our Lord, and ofgreat power: his understanding is infinite”(Psalm 147:4-5). Also, “Lift up your eyes onhigh, and behold who hath created thesethings, that bringeth out their host by num-ber: he calleth them all by names by thegreatness of his might, for that he is strongin power: not one faileth” (Isaiah 40:26). Why should this unimaginably powerful

God, who is above the infinite depths of thecosmos, be interested in us? Psalm 8 asksthis question, “When I consider thy heav-ens, the work of thy fingers, the moon andthe stars, which thou hast ordained; what isman, that thou art mindful of him? And theson of man, that thou visitest him? (verses3-4).The Bible shows us clearly that God did

not find us in the universe by chance, butcreated the estimated 10 to the power of 80atoms on account of us humans. We aremoreover created in the image of God. Thismeans that we have many divine character-istics: language, for instance, creativity andmathematical capability. We can createcompletely new things. No animal can dothis. Only man—and the Bible reports ofthis—has fallen. This means he deliberatelywent away from God, who cursed thewhole cosmos, which He once described as

“good.” Because of this curse we see all theterrible things in the world, and we hu-mans have become like animals and onlybear a blurred divine image. The hopefulthing about this dilemma is that the cursewill one day be removed and things will beas they once were. This mighty, omnipresent, omniscient

and almighty God works on individualhearts of men who accept Him, who believeHim and trust Him. “For God, who com-manded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the lightof the knowledge of the glory of God in theface of Jesus Christ” (2 Corinthians 4:6).Thus, the presence of God today is conceiv-able through faith and changes our lives. The highly intelligent King Solomon

asked himself concerning the greatnessand exalted nature of God, “Will God in-deed dwell on the earth?” (1 Kings 8:27).And later on he said, “And the house whichI build is great: for great is our God aboveall gods. But who is able to build him anhouse, seeing the heaven and heaven ofheavens cannot contain him? Who am Ithen, that I should build him an house, save only to burn sacrifice before him?” (2Chronicles 2:5-6). Solomon hit the nail onthe head. Three thousand years before, when other peoples worshiped the sun, an-imals, trees and stones as gods, Israel knewbetter. Everything that we see is God’s cre-ation, but not God Himself.God is also much greater than the uni-

verse, with a radius estimated at more than70 billion light years. Our sun has a diame-ter of 1.392 million kilometers (around865,000 miles), which is 109 times that ofthe earth (12,756 km, or 7,917.5 mi.), andour moon is a mere 3,474 km (2,159 mi.).

The distance from the earth to our moon is384,400 km (238,855 mi.), and to the sun149.6 million km (92.96 million mi.). Lightfrom the sun takes 8 minutes and 19 sec-onds to reach us (the speed of light is299,792 km per second, or 186,282 mi. persecond). If a beam of light would encirclethe sun, it would take 14.6 seconds. This numerical gymnastics exercise

should help us make the great leap to su-pergiant star VY Canis Majoris. It takes abeam of light 8.5 hours to go around it. Tounderstand this a little better, we couldboard an aircraft and go around our sun at900 km (559 mi.) per second. This wouldtake us six months traveling non-stop, andin the case of VY Canis Majoris 1,165 years. For the sun the encircling beam of light, aswe have already seen, would take 14.6 sec-onds: here 8.5 hours. If we portray the

earth as a euro coin, then VY Canis Majoriswould be a gigantic globe with a diameterof 10 km (6 mi.). And if the VY Canis Ma-joris were the size of a basketball, then oursun would be smaller than a speck of dust. There are suns that are a million times

larger and their luminosity a million timesgreater than our sun, then. The as-tronomers know of a few such supergiantstars today. They are called Eta Carinae,Betelgeuse, HR 5171 A, Antares A, VVCephei A, Cassiopeiae, R 136a1, and Mira.If you go blind from looking at the sun fortoo long, what would looking at the mil-lionfold stronger VY Canis Majoris do? Andall this belongs to God’s creation! That iswhy it says in 1 Timothy 6:16, “Who only hath immortal-ity, dwelling in the light which no man canapproach unto; whom no man hath seen,

nor can see: to whom be honour and powereverlasting. Amen.” And of Jesus Christ it says,“…whom he hath appointed heir of all things,by whom also he made the worlds; who beingthe brightness of his glory, and the express im-age of his person, and upholding all things bythe word of his power, when he had by himselfpurged our sins, sat down on the right hand ofthe Majesty on high” (Hebrews 1:2-3).The Lord Jesus is the radiation of His glory,

and the exact expression of His substance, Hisbeing. That is why Jesus asked the doubtingdisciple, “Have I been so long time with you,and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? Hethat hath seen me hath seen the Father; andhow sayest thou then, Show us the Father?”(John 14:9). In another place we read, “He thatbelieveth on me, believeth not on me, but onhim that sent me. And he that seeth me seethhim that sent me” (John 12:44-45). Everythingthat Jesus Christ said, everything He did, andwhat He ultimately did for us reflects God’sheart, God’s nature and God’s intention withus. Is that not wonderful? Instead of pondering on the God-Spirit na-

ture and how incomprehensible this is, wemay look at Jesus. Then we will know exactlywhat love, compassion and willingness to sac-rifice mean. The Lord Jesus said in the name ofthe Father, “Let not your heart be troubled: yebelieve in God, believe also in me. In my Fa-ther’s house are many mansions: if it were notso, I would have told you. I go to prepare aplace for you. And if I go and prepare a placefor you, I will come again, and receive you untomyself; that where I am, there ye may be also”(John 14:1-3).Jesus Christ in the form of man is simulta-

neously the “transformer” of God. What doesthis mean? I will give you an example. In thehuge Brazilian hydroelectric power plantItaipu, near the Iguazu Falls, electricity is pro-

duced. The 20 turbines (the maximum al-lowed to operate at once is 18) each produce700 megawatts. The voltage is initially 6,600volts. From there it is transformed to345,000 volts, and supplied to important in-dustrial plants where it is further trans-formed to 13,800 volts. For the use of five toten thousand households, it is further trans-formed down to either 110 or 220 volts, de-pending on the state where it is used. Whatwould happen if the 13,800 volts were di-rectly run into a house? Pretty much every-thing would blow, and in the worst caseburn down. It would be similar to this if wewere to see God. Our senses could not standit, and we would die on the spot. For thisreason, we have the filtered presence ofGod, with Jesus Christ as a transformer. What Moses was able to see at that time wassomething of the heavenly glory of Yahweh, and this was none other than Jesus Christbefore His incarnation (cf. Philippians 2:6-9).This partly visible presence of God also

filled the temple, “And it came to pass, whenthe priests were come out of the holy place, that the cloud filled the house of the Lord,so that the priests could not stand to minis-ter because of the cloud: for the glory of theLord had filled the house of the Lord” (1Kings 8:10-11). This glorious presence ofGod cannot really be described; you wouldhave to come directly and personally in con-tact with it. It was similar when Jesus spoke to

Matthew and told him to follow Him (Mark2:14). Matthew realized immediately that hewas being spoken to by someone very spe-cial, for, “The Word was made flesh, anddwelt among us, and we beheld his glory”(John 1:14). (MR0516/779)

Paul begins verse 7 with the words, “Even as itis meet for me to think this of you all.” Paulfound it right to give thanks for the Philippi-

ans. In verse 6 he writes, “Being confident of thisvery thing, that he which hath begun a good workin you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.”It is God that has begun a good work in us and willlead us till the day of Jesus Christ. Referring to thisfact and in faith in God, Paul expresses his gratitudein verse 7.Paul was a spiritual father for the church in

Philippi. He had founded the church. In a church, not only the elders are shepherds. There are manywho serve as shepherds; for instance, the Sundayschool teachers or leaders of youth groups, as wellas the preachers who proclaim the Word of God onSunday. Also, every father and mother is in a way aspiritual shepherd.Paul was an example in his function as a spiritual

shepherd. A quality which we see in Paul in thispassage is his union with other believers. In verse 7it says further, “…because I have you in my heart.”Paul was in Rome, far from the Philippians, and yetunited with them. He prays for them and knowsthem by name. It is important what they think. It isby no means a superficial union, but a relationshipof feelings and thoughts. The heart that Paul men-

tions in verse 7 is the place where all our thoughtsand feelings come from, both the good and the bad.In Deuteronomy 6:5 it says, “And thou shalt lovethe Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with allthy soul, and with all thy might.” God wants us tolove Him with everything we are. If we do this, thereis consequently no part of our self that does notlove the Lord. In the same way Paul had great zealconcerning the church at Philippi. It was not a side-line for him but a life’s task. He asked himself whatwas important to the church members and whatconcerned them. This is how a shepherd should be.He should not merely lead but care about his flock, even if he is far away. The following example shows such a shepherd: a

pastor invited a young man from his church tolunch. The young man was very successful andrich. During the meal, the two men had a conversa-tion. The young man suddenly asked, “How muchdo you need?” The pastor inquired about the rea-son for his question. The young man had assumedthe pastor had invited him in order to ask formoney for the church. The pastor answered, how-ever, “I just wanted to know how you are.” It was im-portant for Paul to know how the Philippians were. In verse 8 it says, “God is my record, how greatly

I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ.”

His love was not dependent on sympathy or antipa-thy. He did not exclude any people. Every person inthe church was important to him. Paul was influ-enced by the love of Christ through and through. The Lord Jesus, Paul’s example, made no differ-

ence between a Jew and a Gentile. For Jews it wasdifficult to accept others. Paul differed from otherJews in this point. He was zealous for the church atPhilippi. Verse 8 speaks of a very strong love, a pas-sionate love which involves the whole person. Nowwe understand the union of Paul with the church. To be a spiritual leader or a pastor is not an occu-

pation but a calling. We have seen Paul now as aspiritual leader. On the other side there is thechurch. How does she stand where Paul is con-cerned? What is our attitude toward those who leadour church or preach there? What do we teach ourchildren regarding their attitude to those who teachthem? In verse 7 it says, “Even as it is meet for me to

think this of you all, because I have you in my heart;inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defenceand confirmation of the gospel, ye all are partakersof my grace.” The Philippians were as united withPaul as he was with them. Paul was an exemplarychurch pastor and spiritual father, and the Philippi-ans were an exemplary church in every way. Paulwas thankful for them because they were unitedwith him in their service, and not just with words. Itis easy to say, “I will pray for you,” but what is it likeafterwards? Do we even think of it at home? For thePhilippians it was more than words. They wereunited with Paul in word and deed. It was importantfor them to know how Paul was, and they wanted toencourage him. They sent Epaphroditus to him witha gift, even though they were in financial difficulties. In the USA, there are many churches for whom it

is important that the pastor is doing well. The pastorshould employ all his time for the church and nothave to be concerned with earthly things. ThePhilippians were an example of this. It was impor-

tant for them that the brother preaching the Wordwas well. They wanted to help so that Paul couldcontinue with the “defense and confirmation of thegospel.”With “defense...of the gospel,” the task is de-

scribed of confronting critics. The people in theworld must have the gospel explained to them. The“confirmation of the gospel” is a task within thechurch. It is important that the people in the churchmake progress in their faith. It would be sad if thespiritual growth of a believer makes no progress forten years. For growth in a church, leaders areneeded who are concerned about the spiritual wel-fare of the individual. They should grow in fellow-ship with their Lord and Redeemer. The Philippians were concerned about their

growth. They were concerned for those who had ledthem to their conversion. They were united in theLord’s work. For Paul, the Philippians were a workof grace, a work of Jesus Christ.A pastor needs a church, and a church needs a

pastor. They are dependent on one another. It is al-ways a scary thing when it is reported that a studentof theology becomes pastor of a church directly afterthe end of his studies. Does he know his church? Itis about more than organization. It is about the spir-itual things. How do things stand with you? How important

are the concerns of your church to you? Do you prayfor the elders? Do you pray for the pastors? They aredependent on our prayers! It is shameful when I read in the report of a mis-

sionary in Argentina, that he prays for the ministryof the Midnight Call every day, and I do not do itmyself…The missionaries are also dependent on ourprayers. Are we concerned about their well-being?The Philippians were prepared to go without fi-nances in order that it would be better for Paul. The conclusion we come to from this Bible text is:

we need one another! (MR0416/768)

Firstly, the situation unfolding atpresent really shouldn’t be news.It concerns demographics. After

all, “demographics is destiny.” This say-ing reflects that fact that changing birthrates and longevity (length of life) canhave a long-running impact on societies, spanning a half century and more. Birthrates have been plunging around theworld since the mid-1960s, a trend nowextending to most nations. At the sametime, most countries are experiencingincreasing longevity … i.e. people livinglonger than before. It sounds like an “economics” prob-

lem and is popularly treated as such. Butthat would be wrong. In reality, therapid demographic shifts the world iswitnessing are more a function of

“changing values” than anything else. Wewill try to explain. This writer has published many warn-

ings about the impending future impactof changing demographics since the early1990s. That future has arrived—the chick-ens having come home to roost, as thesaying goes. And so, the time has arrivedwhere the crisis has now become evidentto most. This has unleashed a desperateresponse. People are clamoring to save fortheir retirement years and to find suffi-cient financial income. But as almost al-ways is the case, by the time a crisisbecomes broadly recognized, it is usuallymuch too late to respond.Just what is happening? A brew of five

major factors is giving boil to a burgeon-

Economists and pension analysts around the world aregnashing their teeth. How are the world’s present and futureretirees going to be cared for? A “perfect storm” is thereforebearing down on the world’s stretched financial systems. There couldn’t be more contributing factors coinciding at

the same time. Just what is happening? And, does the Bible have anythingto say on this topic?

ing demographic and retirementdilemma. 1. Slumping Fertility Rate: The world fertil-ity rate (the number of births per fe-male)—from third-world to developednations—has been plunging over thepast half-century. It is a global phenom-enon … even to the extent that immi-grant groups in nations such asGermany actually have lower birthratesthan domestics. There are many rea-sons for this plunge (not all of whichwe will have space to review). The mainconsequence of this development isthat populations are aging.

2. Increasing Urbanization: Says Stratforwith respect to slowing birth rates, “[…]The process is essentially irreversible.”Why? They argue that it is primarily amatter of urbanization. “[…] In a matureurban society, the economic value ofchildren declines. In fact, children turnfrom instruments of production intoobjects of massive consumption.”1

3. Extending Longevity: An unprecedentedphenomenon that is sweeping the worldtoday is that people are living longer(see Midnight Call article “PensionFrenzy, the Aged and Final Judgment,”August 2015 for further perspectives).Never before has there been a world-wide boom in longevity. In fact, actuar-ies (analysts that calculate mortalitytrends) have been consistently provenwrong over the past two decades. Peoplekeep living longer than expected. There-

fore, pension funds dis-cover that they havegreater liabilities (futurepension payments thatthey have to make) thanthey originally thought.

4. Productivity Slowdown. Some analystshave argued that the world would wit-ness a massive productivity boom. Therefore, less people could generatethe incomes that would be required tomaintain a reasonable retirementlifestyle for the elderly. Instead, the op-posite is evident. Productivity growthrates have declined around the world inrecent years.

5. Shrinking Investment Income. Given thedeflationary impact of an aging popula-tion, interest rate levels have fallen. Cen-tral bankers around the world haveresponded to slowing economic growthby slashing interest rates to 5,000 yearlows. This virtually guarantees future in-vestment income will be low.

How significant are these trends?Consider that never before in world his-tory have the above five factors oc-curred at the same time. Never before inhistory has a world population boombeen followed by a population bust. Quoting a report by Fabius Maximus

(a respected political research site), thefuture impact will be shattering. Wequote: “The 2nd generation after thepresent one will be only 40% as large as

“[…] In a mature urban society, theeconomic value of children declines. Infact, children turn from instruments ofproduction into objects of massiveconsumption.”1

today’s. The 4th genera-tion will be only 15%as large. These are as-tonishing numbers.The worst large-scalepandemics killed1/4 to 1/3 of theaffected popula-tion. Only themost severe in-flicted such

damage.” There can be no doubt: the

scale of these trends is unprecedented. The resultant financial and social pres-sures upon the world are truly pro-found.Analysts may argue about the causes

with mathematical and economic theo-ries, as if isolated from the reality that itis a “human” world. Crises are the con-sequence of the choices in values thatmankind has made. There we find theultimate causes, and not in movementsof the stars, mathematics or economics. The consequences of “human choices”cannot be escaped. “Do not be deceived:God cannot be mocked. A man reapswhat he sows” (Galatians 6:7).Already today, we live in societies

where it has become (in some cases)prohibitively expensive to raise children.Children are widely considered to be toocostly to raise. According to variousstudies, having children sharply in-creases the likelihood of personal bank-ruptcy (most certainly so forsingle-parent families). We now live inan era of “post-familialism.”

The Perverse Wisdom of the AgeThus, the wisdom of the current human(Anthropocene) era. Financial marketsare expected to deliver secure retirementbenefits in lieu of shrinking families andfertility. Impossible. Biology and mor-phology (the physical designs of crea-tures and humans that God has made)are mocked. Feminists are angry at “evo-lution” for having given them child-bear-ing organs. Raising children is somethingthat is now looked down upon as a lowercaste career. Families are considered to befluid arrangements. One dare not denythat sexual orientation and child-rearingis to be entirely independent of biology. Again, how dare the obvious physical

plumbing of male and female and geneticdifferences dictate sexual orientation?Few stop to consider that the theory ofevolution does not support the idea thathomosexuality or feminism could resultfrom a “carrier gene.” If so, it would havebeen a gene that would have become ex-tinct over the supposed millennia of evo-lutionary process, as it would have been anon-perpetuating gene for the most part. The dispositions and values implicit in

the above-mentioned trends play a causalrole in the world’s current demographicchallenges. At least in part, they give riseto it. While it is wonderful that longevityis increasing and that the quality of life isgenerally improving for the aged, theplunging birth rates have severe conse-quences that cannot be escaped.God allows humanity (and each of us

individually) to make choices. We canchoose good or evil, or define morality

as we wish. But God has the last say. As we al-ready have identified, demography is destiny. That destiny is near. Judgment will come.

Anti-Familialism in HistoryVoluntary population implosions (i.e., notassociated with pandemics or war) have hap-pened before, though not on a global scale astoday. Roman aristocrats, for example, even-tually became so reluctant to accept the bur-dens of heading a family that CaesarAugustus felt compelled to enact steep “bach-elor taxes” and otherwise punish those whoremained unwed and childless.Polybius, the Greek historian, writes of the

people of Hellas of the 3rd century BC (inThe Histories, his work covers the period of264–146 BC in great detail): “[… The peopleof Hellas had entered the false path of osten-tation, avarice and laziness, and were there-fore becoming unwilling to marry, or, if theydid marry, to bring up the children born tothem; the majority were only willing to bringup at most one or two, in order to leave themwealthy and to spoil them in their childhood;and in consequence of all this the evil hadbeen spreading rapidly before it was ob-served.”What Polybius describes is today playing

out on a global level.

Longevity in the BibleThroughout the course of human history, there will be two global disasters in whichlongevity will have been involved. The firstmajor longevity shock took place early in thehistory of the world. Following the Flood, lifespans started to shorten significantly forthose born thereafter. Up to the time of the

Flood, the average lifespan, according to theBible, was around 930 years. A “longevity”collapse then ensued. However, falling longevity in the post-

Flood time had a major consequence. All pa-triarchs that would have known Noah andheard verbal history from him and others di-rectly, died off over a very short period of 200years. To be precise, eleven generations diedwithin a two century time period. Considerthat during the lifetime of Abraham, eightgenerations died. Imagine over your lifespan, eight generations of great, great, great ... etc.ancestor grandfathers passing away. There were disastrous repercussions.

Mankind had quickly fallen to godlessnessand sin. Only a little more than a century af-ter Noah died, Nimrod was busy pursuinghumanist endeavors. God needed to dispersethe citizens of Babel, who were intent to makea “name for [themselves]” (Genesis 11:4). Assuch, the plans of Nimrod were thwarted fora time. With so few acknowledging the Creator,

Jehovah decided to call out a people for him-self; one that would be a light to the world …His Servant Israel (Isaiah 44). Therefore heselected Abram, a man of faith, and calledout a people—namely the Hebrews—to be alight unto the world.

Thoughts to PonderOswald Spengler, the German historian andphilosopher, once observed, “When the or-dinary thought of a highly cultivated peoplebegins to regard ‘having children’ as a ques-tion of pro’s and con’s, the great turningpoint has come.” That point has most cer-tainly arrived for most developed nations.

Only a little more than a century after Noah died, Nimrod was busypursuing humanist endeavors. God needed to disperse the citizens ofBabel, who were intent to make a “name for [themselves]” (Genesis11:4). As such, the plans of Nimrod were thwarted for a time.

The trend will not reverse as the point ofreturn has passed.Patriarchal societies (which have pro-

vided societal stability for millennia) areunder attack. Fertility rates are difficultto change, as many governments havediscovered. The social trends that pro-duced this change—such as new contra-ceptives, feminism, materialism, narcissism (self-love), humanism … etc.—continue to wax worse. Male contracep-tives (a male pill) is anotherdevelopment that will depress birthrates.Looking ahead, few economists give

proper attribution to the role of length-ening lifespans in the boom of prosper-ity and material/financial wealth thathas been generated in the past two cen-turies. Now that past demographictrends are reversing, they are dumb-founded and frustrated. Policymakers,

strive as they might at manipulating in-terest rates and money, cannot over-come the influences of extendedlongevity and low fertility. What is the solution? To date, sup-

posed answers offered by the collectivewealth establishment around the worldare entirely fraudulent. In so doing, theymay succeed in deferring the ultimatereckoning day. But what a day that willbe when it comes! The longer conse-quences are deferred, the more perver-sion increases, the more cataclysmic thefinal outcome. God intervened in the days of Noah

and Abram. He will do so again in thefuture, as the Bible clearly outlines.

These statements only contradictone another at first glance, but inthe Biblical overall context belong

together. It is correct that the altar of in-cense, the seven-armed candlestick, theshowbread table, and the bread belongingto it were in the front part of the taberna-cle, before the veil that divided the sanctu-ary from the Holy of Holies. The Holy ofHolies, in which the Ark of the Covenantstood, represented the direct presence ofGod. Here the High Priest was allowedonly once a year, “not without blood,”on the Day of Atonement (Hebrews 9:7).The High Priest was obliged twice a

day, in the morning and in the evening, togo into the front part of the sanctuary to

sacrifice on the altar of incense, before theveil. In Exodus 30:8 it says, “a perpetualincense before the Lord.” Why “before theLord”? Because the perfume wentthrough the veil into the Holy of Holies. That is why the altar of incense had to bein front of the veil. And so it stood there, divided by a veil, in front of the Ark of theCovenant in the Holy of Holies (cf. Exo-dus 40:5). In this sense the altar of in-cense belonged indirectly to the Holy ofHolies. That is why the NIV translates He-brews 9:3-4, “Behind the second curtainwas a room called the Most Holy Place, which had the golden altar of incense andthe gold-covered ark of the covenant. Thisark contained the golden jar of manna,Aaron’s staff that had budded, and thestone tablets of the covenant.”Although the altar of incense stood

before the veil separating the Holy ofHolies, it belonged as far as its purposewas concerned in the sanctuary. Thus, both are correct. In a prophetic, longdistance view, this is also a pointer toJesus Christ, who did not remain stand-ing in the sanctuary but proceeded tothe Holy of Holies. Through Him ourprayers are as incense, a sweet savorand well-pleasing to God the Father.

(MR0216/765)

According to Hebrews 9:3-4, the altar of incense was behind the veilin the sanctuary. But according to Exodus 30:6, it was in front of theveil in the first part of the tabernacle. Which is right?

Why Study the

Bible? The question is asked, “Why study the Bible?” One answer is that humanityneeds communication from God with regard to who He is and what Herequires. The thousands of disorganized and organized religions that existworldwide today is evidence that much of humanity is confused and ignorantwith regard to God’s revelation, the Holy Bible.

Although it is not necessarily a search for thetrue God (Rom 3:11), humanity’s religiousand philosophical pursuits indicate the empti-

ness in life that occurs due to the absence of God, asa consequence of disobedience and unbelief. All hu-manity recognizes the necessity for authority in life, because there is a fundamental human need to func-tion according to one’s truth perception. As opposedto Scripture alone, other sources of authority may in-clude, for example: church traditions, convincing in-dividuals, human reason, occultpractices/superstitions, religious groups, and theo-logical persuasions (some of which may be valid andothers obviously not, but even those with validitymust never contradict, subjugate, or substitute bibli-cal revelation).God’s Word is, of course, the ultimate authority

for everything necessary to salvation (cf. 2 Pet 1:3).Because Scripture alone contains such truth, it mustnecessarily communicate with perspicuity so as tobe comprehensible to all humanity. Indeed, the Bibleis sufficiently perspicuous in this regard for any per-son who will receive Scripture for the authority thatit is (cf. Ps 119:105, 130; 2 Pet 3:16). The perspicuityof Scripture does not obviate the need for the art ofbiblical interpretation (viz. hermeneutics), but doesmakes understanding possible. There are certainlythose who regard biblical truth as abstruse, yet thisdoes not result from obscurity in Scripture; rather, obfuscation is the consequence of one’s own spiri-tual blindness, or lack of understanding by thosewho do not strive for the omniperfect clarity of thetruth. Sadly, there are some who become so preoccu-pied with thoughts contrary to Scripture that theyprevent understanding it.

WHAT IS REVELATION?The theological term “revelation” refers both toGod’s self-disclosure with regard to His nature andpurpose for humanity, and the corpus of truth made

known. The term is derived from the Greek wordapokalupsis, which means “a disclosure” or “revela-tion,” and may pertain to the act whereby God re-veals a truth through creation (Ps 19; Rom 1:18-21),dreams (Dan 2:20-30), miracles (John 20:30-31),oral communication (Exod 3:1-9; Acts 22:17-21),and the person of Jesus Christ (John 1:14, 18). Reve-lation may also pertain to the content of the truth re-vealed; that is, the words contained in the Bible. Thetwo mediums of God’s revelation include: generalrevelation and special revelation. General revelationis received through creation and conscience (Ps 19;Rom 1—3; Acts 14:15-17; 17:22-31); it is the world allaround humanity, and also certain sensibilitieswithin humanity. Special revelation is the very Wordof God (the 39 books of the Old Testament and 27books of the New Testament).

WHAT IS RELIABLE?The reliability (or historicity) of a document, such asthe books of the Bible, is based upon the closenessin time of the writers to the accounts that theyrecorded. Either by eyewitnesses or by those who re-ceived what they wrote from eyewitnesses were theNew Testament accounts of the life of Christrecorded (Luke 1:1-3; 3:1-3; John 19:35; 2 Pet 1:16; 1John 1:3; etc.). The early church not only preachedtheir testimony concerning Jesus Christ amongfriendly witnesses, but also among those who con-fronted them relentlessly concerning the fundamen-tal precepts of the Christian faith, and evenemployed aggressive and violent tactics. The disci-ples could not risk inaccuracy or manipulation ofsuch vital propositions, since those less than enthu-siastic individuals—who regarded the Lord’s personand work as scandalous—could refute those pre-cepts. The foundational element of the apostolicpreaching was the bold and confident appeal to theexperience and knowledge of their listeners. Notonly could they proclaim witness to the life, death,

God’s Word is, of course, the ultimate authority for everything necessaryto salvation (cf. 2 Pet 1:3). Because Scripture alone contains such truth,it must necessarily communicate with perspicuity so as to be compre-hensible to all humanity.

and resurrection of Christ, but also they could say,“just as you yourselves know” (Acts 2:22, 32).With so many biased criticisms of the Bible, one

would surely think that by now someone wouldhave been able to conclude that it is not God’s Wordand that the current translations of the Bible are farfrom accurate. However, the substantial testimonyis in favor of both the Old Testament and New Tes-tament. History records numerous atheists, histori-ans, lawyers, scientists, and others who determinedto disprove the accuracy of the Bible, and have actu-ally become the most compelling defenders for it:actually becoming Christians themselves. Certainly,it is one thing to test the accuracy of something, butto do it with a predetermined bias is simply not fair.Nevertheless, such hardest of the skeptics fall oneby one to their knees, and plead for mercy to thevery God whose holy Word they sought to erase.

Infidels for eighteen hundred years have been refuting

and overthrowing this book, and yet it stands today as

solid as a rock. Its circulation increases, and it is more

loved and cherished and read today than ever before. Infi-

dels, with all their assaults, make about as much impres-

sion on this book as a man with a tack hammer would on

the Pyramids of Egypt. When the French monarch pro-

posed the persecution of the Christians in his dominion,

an old statesman and warrior said to him, “Sire, the Church

of God is an anvil that has worn out many hammers.” So

the hammers of infidels have been pecking away at this

book for ages, but the hammers are worn out, and the

anvil still endures. If this book had not been the book of

God, men would have destroyed it long ago. Emperors

and popes, kings and priests, princes and rulers have all

tried their hand at it; they die and the book still lives.1

WHAT IS A WORLDVIEW?The personal viewpoint from which one under-stands all of life is often regarded as a worldview. Aworldview is then an amalgamation of various as-

sumptions or presuppositions that one affirms—ei-ther consciously or subconsciously—concerning thebasic framework of the world in which we live. Therationale for decision-making is not always obviousbecause it is based upon one’s worldview (i.e. one’sreason for living, one’s decision for the focus of hisor her life, and one’s consequences for those deci-sions). Therefore, it is absolutely critical to abide inthe truth of God’s Word and in the Savior, so thatone’s morality is based upon the spirit of truth, notthe spirit of error (e.g., see 1 John 4:1-6).A plethora of worldviews is evident in our cul-

ture, which seeks to answer basic questions regard-ing life in the present and thereafter. Manyworldviews are possible, such as the following: bibli-cal theism, deism, dualism, fatalism, hedonism, hu-manism, positivism, pragmatism, relativism, secularism, or synergism. Nevertheless, the reality isthat only one worldview is adequate and true. Theonly belief system that is sufficient is that God ac-tively—moment by moment—rules sovereignly overall things for His own glory and for the good of Hispeople. The comprehensive worldview that “the LORD

reigns” is revealed all throughout the Bible, and es-pecially within the Psalms. A worldview focusedupon God is declared rather succinctly in the wor-ship song of Psalm 97. The psalm provides an all-en-compassing perspective of the world that isunderstood in relation to God’s divine characterand holy attributes (vv. 2-11).

WHAT DOES PSALM 97 REVEAL?Psalm 97 is an enthronement hymn declaring theabsolute sovereignty of God over all creation. Hav-ing a true worldview begins with an honest under-standing of God Himself. Nothing upon earth willbe understood properly until one has first acknowl-edged God as supremely glorious: exalted inheaven. Psalm 97 provides tremendous help in re-

vealing a theocentric (God-focused) comprehensionof all things.Psalm 97 begins with the familiar refrain, “The

LORD reigns.” The declaration means that God isabsolutely sovereign over all human history. Onlythe Lord God is always able to do as He pleases:continually exercising His all-encompassing author-ity. How should we respond to such revelation? “Letthe earth rejoice” is the only response that would beappropriate to the magnificent truth of divine sover-eignty.The throne of God is described in symbolic terms

that inspire profound and reverential awe. First, theLord God is swathed in “clouds and thick dark-ness,” which is a reminder that He is invisible to theeyes of humanity and majestically inscrutable re-garding His ways. Moreover, “righteousness and jus-tice are the foundation of His throne.” God is theideal government for He is a beneficent monarch(king), who allows no miscarriages of justice or per-versions of the truth.God is a consuming fire to those who do not

know Him and who do not heed the gospel of Hisgrace (Ps 97:3-5; cf. 2 Thess 1:8). The time is comingin which everything that exalts itself against theknowledge of God will be humbled. At that comingtime, the Lord will be seen for who He has alwaysbeen: “Most High over all the earth” (Ps 97:6-9). Inlight of that coming day, how should one respondnow? “Hate evil . . . love the LORD” (v. 10).The two commands—hate evil, love God—are

moral corollaries, for all who sincerely love the Lordmust hate all that is contrary to Him. “Light is sownlike seed for the righteous” (v. 11), which means

that the coming of Christ will diffuse light for thosewho practice what is right, in addition to “gladness”for all those whose hearts are honest and sincere be-fore God.Psalm 97 concludes by calling upon all God’s

people to “be glad in the LORD.” Rightly shouldGod’s people exult in the Lord Himself and in Hiskingdom. All genuine gladness is in the Lord God(as He has revealed Himself to humanity in the HolyBible). The truth that “the LORD reigns” makes theheart glad. Knowing “that God causes all things towork together for good” to those who love Him, “tothose who are called according to His purpose”(Rom 8:28), is reason for genuine gladness!

WHY STUDY THE BIBLE?God took the initiative and revealed all truth, bymeans of the Holy Spirit, who impelled erring hu-mans as penmen, yet miraculously superintendedthem as they wrote, thereby preventing any error oromission in Scripture (2 Tim 3:16; 2 Pet 1:21). Scrip-ture is “God-breathed” and can be trusted as in-errant and infallible. The trustworthiness ofScripture means it is credible and worthy of belief.God gave His Word to reveal Himself and His willfor humanity. Scripture makes errant humans wiseunto salvation, and hearing and heeding it will cer-tainly grant you the strength and wisdom neededfor all the opportunities and responsibilities that areyours.

In the news recently, a commentatorasked whether we are already living inan uninhibited society. The changes in

our culture certainly are drastic. Christianvalues are toppling. Marriage, family andmorals are being newly defined. The up-heavals in our culture are serious. Someonesaid recently that Christian values and con-victions are being washed away in the end-

time floods. We are indeed living in aworld that has fallen away from God.Everything is upside-down, and the ten-sion is increasing. Many people find thishard to bear. Every big event casts itsshadow regarding the coming apostasy, af-ter the rapture of the Church, when theAntichrist will appear (2 Thessalonians2:1-12; Revelation 17:13). This is why Paul

emphasized in his time, “For the mystery ofiniquity doth already work” (2 Thessaloni-ans 2:7). Every turning away from theWord of God, every liberality, every weak-ening, depreciation or defamation of theScripture is basically antichristian and hasthe mystery of iniquity in it. It is turningaway from love of the truth and letting liestake its place. In a newsletter, the following could be read:

“Does no one see the apparent connection be-tween the spiritual apostasy in the land of theReformation, and the political-social develop-ment of our country? No connection betweenthe lukewarm, Bible-critical, modern serviceslacking devotion, and Islamization? No con-nection between abortions, greed for money, exploitation in the financial market, the cold-ness in the family and among neighbors, thedivorce rate—is there really no connection?”God’s answer to those who reject His

Word is shattering. It will apply when Hehas raptured His church (2 Thessalonians2:7) and the Antichrist appears on the scene(verse 8; cf. Revelation 17:13), “And for thiscause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: that they allmight be damned who believed not thetruth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness”(2 Thessalonians 2:11-12).Is not this strong delusion already visible?

In Sweden, a female pastor was of the opin-ion that the Christian symbols should be re-moved from the church, and instead prayerniches for Muslims be established. In Ger-man churches, the prayer mat is unrolled ortexts from the Koran read, with the emphasisthat it is equal to the Word of God. The Bibleis denied, however. Some people speak of aso-called “Chrislam.” Fundamental Islam is

looked upon as harmless and excused; wemust be prepared for dialogue. FundamentalChristianity, on the other hand, is declared tobe the enemy of society. H. Abdel-Samad, anEgyptian-born intellectual and critic of Islam, said in an interview the following, “Peoplefight for freedom of speech, unless it is aboutIslam. People fight for human rights, unless itis about Islam.”Abdel-Samad needs more bodyguards for

his protection than many politicians. The irra-tional behavior of our society cannot be ex-plained unless we believe in the “wiles of thedevil…principalities…powers…the rulers of thedarkness of this world…spiritual wickednessin high places” (Ephesians 6:11-12). In all areas we find how the mystery of

lawlessness is gaining ground. The authorGeorge Orwell said, “The further a societydrifts away from the truth, the more it willhate those who say so.” And Martin Lutherknew, “No greater wrath of God can comethan to be robbed of His Word.” The result, therefore, is that this will finally happen. The truth will be taken away from the peo-ple in the end times, and instead they willbe presented with the Antichrist and lies.A psychologist stated soberly, “The masses

have never thirsted for the truth; they turnaway from the facts that do not please themand prefer to worship errors. The one whoknows how to deceive them easily becomestheir lord. The one who attempts to enlightenthem is always their victim.”The only hope is in the return of Jesus and

the setting up of His kingdom. Karl FriedrichHering, a German pastor, expressed it as fol-lows: “There is no kingdom of peace andrighteousness without Christ, and no hopefor the world until it comes under the direct

lordship of God and His Anointed.” Theone piece of good news in the midst of allthe bad news is that Biblical prophecy isbeing fulfilled. It promises us, amongother things, that the godless one can onlywork as long as the Lord allows him, andthat Jesus Himself will have the last word.“For I know that my redeemer liveth, andthat he shall stand at the latter day uponthe earth” (Job 19:25). God will put all things under the feet of

the Lord Jesus (Psalm 110:1; Mark 12:36).Every knee will bow and every tongue con-fess that He is the Lord (Isaiah 45:23; Ro-mans 14:11; Philippians 2:10-11). As it saysin the previously quoted newsletter, “Fromevery pulpit in the land it must be pro-claimed with a voice like thunder that God isstill alive, that God is watching, and that Godis still on the throne. Our faith is a crucible; itwill be tested by fire, and there is no moresure and embracing haven for the heart andmind than before the throne of God.”This is our confidence, even in the face of

the stream of refugees from Islamic coun-tries. We have already seen how Christiansshould behave in this challenge. I want to

say one thing, however. We should notthink that these people are just coming;they are coming because God has sent them(cf. Amos 3:6). The stream of refugees is notan accident in God’s plan. The New Testa-ment teaches us that we should meet allpeople in the love of Jesus and be preparedto help them. We must find new ways toreach them with the Gospel. Those whoonly criticize them and curse them are notstanding on New Testament ground. Manyof these people are more open to theGospel outside of their Islamic background.God is on the wish list of all people. WeChristians must not be a part of the prob-lem; it is our calling to be a part of the an-swer. Abdel-Samad said, “We must not leavethe people (refugees) to the Islamic associa-tions.” This is where they are exploited andinfluenced by fundamental Islam.Thomas Lachenmaier emphasized in the

German Christian magazine factum: “Thebad news transforms itself in light of theBible. In the end we will see: light is strongerthan darkness…everything that happens, even the terror, the disobedience is part ofGod’s plan of redemption for the world…allthings are in God’s hand and serve His plan.”Ingo Resch writes in the same magazine,“The Holy Scriptures teach us that history isno meaningless sequence of coincidentalhistorical events.” Charles Haddon Spur-geon said on the same subject, “Howeverdark the night may be, morning is coming.”As Christians we may always be sure of this:the victory which was won at Calvary willcontinue! Jesus is coming! “And the God ofpeace shall bruise Satan under your feetshortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christbe with you” (Romans 16:20).

The above Scripture testifies of the unity ofthe world’s nations. When the word “hea-then” is used, it signifies nations outside of

Israel. So, the question arises, why are they “rag-ing…against the Lord, and against his anointed”?The answer in simplified terms is: the nations areunder the rulership of the god of this world. Paul, addressing the Church, makes it crystal clear thatthe world is literally led by “dumb idols.” “Ye knowthat ye were Gentiles, carried away unto thesedumb idols, even as ye were led” (1 Corinthians12:2).

The only nation that is different is Israel; accord-ing to Deuteronomy 32:8, the nations’ borders aresubject to Israel: “When the Most High divided tothe nations their inheritance, when he separatedthe sons of Adam, he set the bounds of the peopleaccording to the number of the children of Israel.”Thus, we have three groups of people: 1. Gentiles2. Israel 3. the Church.

6,000 Year HistoryThe Gentiles have literally warred against one an-other for six millennia. It started way back in the

“Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings ofthe earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against theLord, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, andcast away their cords from us” (Psalm 2:1-3).

beginning, when Cain killed his brother Abel. Hun-dreds of thousands of wars have been fought, withhundreds of millions of deaths. That is the work ofSatan.

The Imitation MessiahIn the Old Testament, the prophets proclaimed thecoming of the Messiah, the Prince of Peace, the onewho would restore all things and cause peace to pre-vail. Jesus made this prophecy regarding the falsemessiah in John 5:43: “I am come in my Father’sname, and ye receive me not: if another shall come inhis own name, him ye will receive.”This simply means a false messiah will appear in

the end stages of the end times, and Israel will accepthim as the Messiah.

AntichristThis false messiah we call the Antichrist, who appearsinstead of Jesus Christ, will be accepted, not only byIsrael, but also by the entire world. But the god of this world has a problem: Antichrist

must bring about peace and prosperity the worldover. That, we all agree, has not happened during thelast 2,000 years. Yet the Bible insists it will happen.Preparation for the Antichrist has been in the

works for the last 2,000 years. John writes: “Little chil-dren, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that an-tichrist shall come, even now are there manyantichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time”(1 John 2:18). Thus we see, at the beginning of theChurch, Antichrist was already at work.In order for the god of this world to present his An-

tichrist to humanity, he must create peace on Earthand good will to man. How will he do it? The apostlePaul writes of him: “And no marvel; for Satan himselfis transformed into an angel of light” (2 Corinthians11:14). Therefore, the spirit of Antichrist must unifyall the nations on planet Earth.

DemocracyThe Gentile nations—fragmented into thousands ofdifferent groups, tribes, and families—were ruled

mostly by monarchies, and often dictators. Thestronger always dominated. When one small king-dom or city-state conquered its neighbor, the win-ner wrote history, and subjected those who wereconquered.Democracy has been practiced before: by the

Greeks in the 5th century BC, and later by the Ro-mans. A degree of democracy was practiced inmany countries—Britain, for example, insists it hasa 1,000-year-old democracy. The United Statesclaims to be the world’s first democracy, and sodid France when they established Universal MaleSuffrage in 1848. Yet the world was still plungedinto wars: the First and Second World War werethe greatest catastrophe Europe had ever known.Yet WWII was also the milestone that marked theend of European wars.

European DominanceOne must realize that the European nations liter-ally conquered the entire world, establishingcolonies in Asia, Africa, America, and Australia. The American continent (North and South) as it istoday consists of 35 sovereign nations, all basedon Roman laws, speaking European languages, and following the principles of European culture.Africa was also carved up between the colonial

powers of Britain, France, Spain, Portugal, Hol-land, Belgium, and Italy. The same thing can be said about Southeast

Asia; the borders were drawn by European powers.Looking at the Middle East, still a hotspot in our

times, experts tell us the colonial powers dividedthe various land masses into sections according tothe preferences of the country in power, totally dis-regarding the culture of the various kingdoms, tribes, and peoples.

The Treaty of RomeThe European Union (EU) was established withthe aim of ending war between neighboring coun-tries. The first step was in 1950, when the Euro-pean Coal and Steel Community was created.

Page 29: The International Prophetic Voice for the Endtimes … · 2017-03-02 · • Tactics of new atheists • The intelligence of ancient man ... and a thriving faith in the face of a

SEPTEMBER 2016 29 % 1-800-845-2420

Seven years later, in 1957, the European EconomicCommunity (or Common Market) was established, based on the Treaty of Rome. Many other treatiesfollowed, creating a more unified Europe. In 1973,Denmark, Ireland, and the UK were admitted, fol-lowed by Greece in 1981, Spain and Portugal in1986, then Austria, Finland, and Sweden in 1995.Later Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hun-gary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia were added in 2004, Bulgaria and Ro-mania in 2007, and lastly Croatia in 2013.

United in DiversityAlthough the motto of the European Union is veryfitting, the leaders of the various countries quicklyrecognized that it is easier said than done. Con-trary to the new countries, without ancient history, these European countries have several thousandyears to look back on, and they have not forgotten. Thus, diversity exists.

Non-Member CountriesSwitzerland and Norway have not joined theUnion. There are multiple reasons for not joining, and one is simple: money. The Norwegian discov-ery of gigantic oil fields in the 1960s, and theirworld class fishing fleet caused them to see no ben-efit in joining the Union. Switzerland, in the heart of Europe, also resisted

membership. This relatively small nation is trulyexceptional. They successfully avoid any involve-ment in wars. Based on a Google search, the lasttime Switzerland invaded another country was in1815, when they invaded parts of France. The flag of Switzerland is the only one accepted

in the United Nations as a square, not rectangular;it is the reverse image of the Red Cross, which wasfounded in Switzerland—the most respected flag inmodern times. This nation is home to the world’s second

largest shipping company, the Mediterranean Ship-ping Company (MSC), operating 456 containervessels. But there is more: this landlocked, moun-tainous country is home to the world’s largest fooddistributor: Nestle. And when it comes to manufac-turing precision instruments, most notablywatches, Switzerland is second to none.

This extremely rich country prides itself in oper-ating the world’s freest democracy. That should be enough reasons not to join the

European Union. Yet, virtually all laws that are is-sued from Brussels, Switzerland complies withwithin a few days.

Reason for BrexitThe UK, just like all other nations in the world, think they are exceptional; after all, Britain was themost successful colonial ruler, priding itself that“the sun never sets on the British Empire.” TheBritish went out to conquer and rule. Britain wantsto lead, not be led by Brussels. But comparing the UK to Switzerland is a dream

not based on reality. According to the CIA Factbook, the lowest 10% income group consumes only 1.7%of the UK gross national product, while the upper10% on the earning scale consumes 30.1%. InSwitzerland, on the other hand, the bottom 10%consume 7.5% of the national product, while theupper 10% only consume 19%. While the UK is animportant component of Europe, it cannot lead theEU.

The FutureThe EU leaders have accepted the UK’s vote andwill deal with Britain as they do with other non-members. While the immediate reaction sent shockwaves

throughout Europe and the rest of the world, therewill only be little change since the UK is forced todeal with the EU, but without the benefits of EUmembership. In 2015, according to the CIA Fact-book, 44% of UK exports went to the EU. Importsfrom the EU were listed at 40%. Thus, economywill dictate the relationship between the EU andthe UK.

Prophetic SignificanceWe may simply call Brexit an intermission towardthe unstoppable development of a global world un-der the auspices of the European Union. It doesnot make one more evil or better than the other. Inthe end, the whole world continues to lift its fistagainst the God of creation. How so? In the nameof democracy, free market, and the need for contin-

uous economic growth, humanity is forced in the di-rection of virtually worshiping his own created prod-ucts.

Human SuccessThe curse God pronounced upon Adam and his de-scendants, modern society continues to detour. Here iswhat it says in Genesis 3:17-19: “And unto Adam hesaid, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice ofthy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I com-manded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed isthe ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it allthe days of thy life; Thorns also and thistles shall itbring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of thefield; In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, tillthou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thoutaken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou re-turn.” But man has taken care of the “thorns…and thistles”

with pesticides; he no longer eats his bread in the sweatof his face, but enjoys the abundance of luxuries of-fered at the supermarket. He eats his meals in comfort-ably air-conditioned and well-equipped homes andrestaurants. A little more than 100 years ago, 80 to 90percent of the world’s population was employed inagriculture. They worked six 12 hour days just to haveenough food. Today, developed countries have madeuse of technologies producing an overabundance offood, while employing less than 2% of the populationin agriculture. With each new invention for the benefit of mankind,

be it food, communication, transportation, or quality oflife, man recognizes his own ability and thereby dis-tances himself from God the Creator. In the last book of our Bible, we see the super suc-

cess and the ultimate end of global prosperity: “For all

nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her for-nication, and the kings of the earth have committedfornication with her, and the merchants of the earth arewaxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies…How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deli-ciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for shesaith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, andshall see no sorrow…And the kings of the earth, whohave committed fornication and lived deliciously withher, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when theyshall see the smoke of her burning” (Rev. 18:3, 7, 9).How man worships his own achievements is fit-

tingly described in the last two verses of chapter 9:“And the rest of the men which were not killed by theseplagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: whichneither can see, nor hear, nor walk: Neither repentedthey of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of theirfornication, nor of their thefts” (verses 20-21). Thatconfirms our statement, “Humanity is forced in the di-rection of virtually worshiping his own created prod-ucts.”

Conclusion The UK exit from the EU will not change the unifica-tion process of all people on earth. The spirit of An-tichrist will prevail, “These have one mind, and shallgive their power and strength unto the beast” (Revela-tion 17:13). What is missing? One man. The revelationof the man who will make Europe’s motto, “United inDiversity,” a reality for all people on earth. Thus, Scrip-ture warns the believer: “That ye be not soon shaken inmind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is athand” (2 Thessalonians 2:2).

Volvo Promises Death-proof Cars by 2020“If you meet Swedish engineers, they’re pretty genuine,” said LexKerssemakers, CEO of Volvo CarsNorth America. “They don’t saythings when they don’t believe in it.”

Fatality-free vehicles are not unprece-dented. In fact, there already are some,

and they’re not just Volvos. According to datafrom the Insurance Institute for HighwaySafety, there are nine vehicle models—includ-ing the Volvo XC90—in which no one in theUnited States died in the four years from 2009to 2012, the most recent period for whichdata is available.Volvo, still based in Sweden but now owned

by China’s Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, wantsto make this the case for its entire vehicle line upthroughout the world. The automaker alreadytracks how many people die in its vehicles in or-der to monitor safety. That way, engineers can tellhow much safer their vehicles become each timethey roll out a new crash-prevention technology. That also helps Volvo predict how much safer itsvehicles will be with each new advancement.Ultimately, all these new technologies will

be tied to together to create a car that can, lit-erally, drive itself. In fact, a number of au-tomakers, not just Volvo, have promised tosell autonomous cars by 2020.“With the development of full autonomy we

are going to push the limits of automotivesafety,” said Volvo safety engineer Erik Coel-ingh, “because if you make a fully autonomousvehicle you have to think through everythingthat potentially can happen with a car.”

That doesn’t mean that drivers will necessar-ily have to use the car’s autonomous drivingmode in order to be safe, though. Even whenthe driver is in full control of the car, these sys-tems will still run in the background, ready totake over the instant there’s danger.

-money.cnn.com, 21 January 2016

Commentary: There is no argument aboutthe constantly improving safety mecha-nisms, particularly in the latest motor vehi-cles that come to the market. The cars fromthe “good old days” would not have theslightest chance to be approved by anysafety-concerned country today; theywould be considered a hazard to the public. It is of interest that communist China is

now the owner of the Volvo passenger motorvehicle brand. This is not surprising, sinceChina has become the world’s largest pas-senger motor vehicle market. What does it mean? Simply that man is

able to do things that were considered im-possible just a century ago, whether it’s con-cerning transportation or communication. We may also include quality of life, life ex-pectancy, and innumerable products that aredesigned for the comfort and safety of mod-ern man. What do all these things have in com-

mon? First of all, they are very positive andare welcomed by virtually all people onearth. The other side of the story, however, isthat man, in his ability to create these benefi-cial things himself, has distanced himselfmore and more from God the Creator. It iswonderful to drive a vehicle that is virtually“death proof,” but death will nevertheless

come. Hebrews 9:27 is ap-plicable: “And as it isappointed unto menonce to die, but afterthis the judg-ment.”

How CARE Packages Wonthe Hearts of EuropeansRenate Senter clearly remembersthe first care package she received,in 1946. She, her mother and hersister had fled Poland. In the after-math of World War II, they’d endedup in a small town, in the British-controlled section of West Ger-many.

“It was my first day of school and allthe children got one,” she says. “And

I remember it was a small package—bur-gundy. And in white letters, it said ‘CARE’ onit.”Inside, there were a candy bar, a tube of

Colgate and a little doll. “But I tell you, thefirst thing that hit me: Included in this boxwas a tremendous amount of white—reallywhite—paper,” she says. And there werepencils! “I don’t even remember the candybar, I was so excited about the paper. Youknow, because at that time we didn’t havepaper for our school assignments,” she re-calls.The packages were shipped by CARE, a

humanitarian group formed by 22 Americanaid and religious organizations. Back then,“CARE” was an acronym for Cooperative forAmerican Remittances to Europe. So her family relied on the big packages

from CARE—filled with lard, flour, sugar andcoffee—that arrived every four months. “My

mother, I am so thankful, had a fantastic imagi-nation for how to make things with limited in-gredients,” Senter says. “I remember shewould send me to the railroad tracks to collectcoal that had accidentally fallen out. And wewould use that to heat the stove.”When it first launched, the aid scheme be-

came a symbol of American generosity. Aid ingeneral was a big part of U.S. diplomacy post-war, helping to rebuild the relationship with Eu-rope.When the Soviets blockaded Berlin in 1948,

the U.S. and U.K. responded with the Berlin Air-lift: American and British air force pilots flew infood and fuel. Sixty percent of relief sent to the

city came from CARE, according to Nunn. Alltold, Americans dropped 250,000 packages. The first packages sent to Europe were sur-

plus military rations left over from the war. When those ran out, CARE started putting to-gether its own packages. At first, the boxescame furnished with just the basics—rice, beans, powdered eggs and milk.

www.npr.org, 11 May 2016

Commentary: America’s generosity, particu-larly to the Germans, was virtually un-matched in history. CARE, which nowstands for “Cooperative for Assistance andRelief Everywhere,” was founded in 1945 as

an international humanitarian agency of anon-sectarian nature. Interestingly, not Christ-ian but humanitarian. Thus, CARE practicedwhat Christians preach, “Therefore if thineenemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give himdrink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of

fire on his head. Benot overcome ofevil, but overcomeevil with good”(Romans 12:20-21).

Contacts with Nearly EveryArab StateIsrael can communicate today with“almost every Arab state,” as long asit then does not make it to the frontpage of the daily newspapers, For-eign Ministry Director-General DoreGold said.

Gold’s comments to the Institute ofSecurity Studies’ (INSS) annual con-

ference in Tel Aviv came a day after reportsthat National Infrastructure, Energy and WaterMinister Yuval Steinitz was in Abu Dhabi fortalks with Emirati officials.Gold himself was in Abu Dhabi in Novem-

ber, paving the way for the opening of an Is-raeli office accredited to the InternationalRenewable Energy Agency located there.“We have a lack of agreement with different

countries in the world,” Gold said. “It is no se-cret that we have problems in Europe. Butthere are many countries open to Israel today, and those who say we are isolated do notknow what they are talking about.”The main change, and Gold called it a “dra-

matic change,” is “the willingness in the Arabworld for ties with Israel under the table.” Goldsaid he travels to various capitals in the Arab

world as part of his job, though he did not dis-close which.“We are entering a period of a lack of world

order, especially in the Middle East,” Goldsaid. “To prepare infrastructure for a basis ofunderstanding, for regional security arrange-ments and—in the end—for peace, we haveto ensure the rules of the game in the worldsystem, and in the regional system.”

-www.jpost.com, 19 January 2016

Commentary: Mr. Gold’s positive attitudemust be commended. He sees the glasshalf-full instead of half-empty. Israel is aMiddle Eastern country, situated almost inthe center of the Arab world. She is theonly functioning democracy in that area.

Plus, Israel is the most progressive societyin the Middle East. In plain words: Arabnations are beginning to recognize the ben-efit of dealing with Israel, even “under thetable.”Nevertheless, we see this only as a tem-

porary development, because Israel ismuch more than a nation on the Mediter-ranean. Israel, from a Biblical point ofview, is the center of the world, andJerusalem is its capital—that is exactly thepoint of division. Neither the Arabs nor therest of the world is prepared to recognizeJerusalem as the capital of the Jewish state. When analyzing Israel, we must go back

to Holy Scripture. Israel is not destined tobe part of the nations of the world, but sep-arate from the nations. While Israel triesdesperately to have good relationships withas many nations as possible, there is com-ing a day when the prophetic Word will befulfilled: “Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Inthose days it shall come to pass, that tenmen shall take hold out of all languages ofthe nations, even shall take hold of the skirtof him that is a Jew, saying, We will gowith you: for we have heard that God iswith you” (Zechariah 8:23). 6318(For more on Israel’s future, read Messianic Psalms, Item

Countries Urge CautionWhen Traveling in the USAThree countries have warned theircitizens to stay on guard when visit-ing US cities rocked by sometimesviolent protests that erupted after astring of police shootings of AfricanAmericans.

The US embassy of Bahrain, a tinyMiddle Eastern island nation, urged

citizens via twitter to “be cautious of protestsor crowded areas occurring around the US.”Bahamas, a Caribbean nation where most

people identify as being of African heritage, warned its people to be careful when visitingUS cities rocked by “shootings of young blackmales by police officers.”The United Arab Emirates urged its stu-

dents and other citizens in the United States toalso be careful, using similar language the USState Department employs when warningAmericans about countries that have experi-enced attacks by extremists.

“Please be aware of immediate surround-ings and avoid crowded places when possi-ble,” the UAE embassy said in a statementthat urged people to stay away from any USdemonstrations. “Exercise particular cautionduring large festivals or events, be alert andstay safe.”Some tourists in New York’s bustling Times

Square said they were nervous about the ten-sion and recent violence in America. “I don’t liketo be in crowded places any more,” said EleanorFairbrother, who was visiting from Ireland.

-www.smh.com.au, 12 July 2016

Commentary: These resolutions are quiteunusual, because the USA is considered arelatively safe country. Yet when comparedwith European nations, the US leads the listwhen it comes to violence. What do we learn from it? Again, there

is only one avenue by which internationalterrorism and gun violence can be takencare of, and that is world government. It isnot a matter of “if” but “when.” Theprocess continues unabated: unity at anycost. After all, Bible prophecy will be ful-filled: “…And all the world wondered af-ter the beast. And they worshipped thedragon which gave power unto the beast:and they worshipped the beast, saying,

Who is like unto thebeast? who is able tomake war withhim?” (Revelation13:3-4). 6315(For more on this sub-

Why Fewer Are SeekingMarriageThe number of young Japanese menand women wanting to get marriedhas seen a sharp decline, reveals anew study. What are the reasons be-hind this trend and how is it impact-ing society?

Looking back, Makoto Watanabewishes he had gotten married in his

early 30s, but he admits back then he hadneither the job security nor the financial re-sources to suppor t a wife and family.“The older I get, the busier I also seem to

get and there are fewer and fewer oppor tu-nities to meet ‘the one,’” he told DW. “NowI have my career and I’m comfor tably off,but I cer tainly have regrets that I did notmarry when I had a chance when I wasyounger.”

Watanabe’s plight is identical to that ofthousands of young Japanese men andwomen, who are unable to find a partner dueto any one of a number of reasons, althoughthe largest obstacles remain an inadequatesalary to support a family and punishing workschedules limiting opportunities to interactwith the opposite sex.A study by an affiliate of Tokyo-based Meiji

Yasuda Life Insurance shows that the propor-tion of Japanese men in their 20s who want tomarry has slumped to 38.7 percent, downalarmingly from 67.1 percent just three yearsago. For women in their 20s, the rate fell from

82.2 percent in 2013 to 59 percent.-www.dw.com/en, 23 June 2016

Commentary: Although Asians and in par-ticular Japanese are more pro-family thanthe European world (West), they are never-

theless following in the footsteps of the so-called modern world. Career, social and fi-nancial position are the key ingredients tostay unmarried. There are other reasons: one is that mar-

riage is now being redefined; it’s no longerjust husband and wife, but same sex marriagehas now been legalized in 22 countries. Thefirst was the Netherlands in the year 2000,and the latest the US in 2015. Although about77 countries list homosexuality as a crime, itis only a matter of time before they too willcave in to the spirit of the end-times. Here

we are reminded ofthe words found in 1 Timothy 4:3, “For-bidding to marry.”

Not a Crime to Steal FoodIn Italy it’s now acceptable to stealsmall amounts of food—but only ifyou have an empty stomach.

The nation’s top appeals court over-turned a conviction against a home-

less Ukrainian man who stole $4.50 worth ofcheese and hot dogs from an Italian super-market because he was starving, the BBC re-ports.The court ruled that because Roman Ostri-

akov was looking for something to eat at theGenoa store, the theft is not a crime.“The condition of the defendant and the

circumstances in which the seizure of mer-chandise took place prove that he took pos-session of that small amount of food in theface of an immediate and essential need fornourishment, acting therefore in a state ofnecessity,” the court said in a statement.Ostriakov was convicted in 2015 and sen-

tenced to six months in jail and a $115 finebefore the conviction was overturned.A columnist in Turin newspaper La

Stampa wrote the high court’s ruling “re-minds everyone that in a civilized countrynot even the worst of men can die ofhunger.”

-www.foxnews.com, 3 May 2016

Commentary: Italy is a country not knownfor Biblical principles, but their high-courtdecided biblically, “He that hath a bounti-ful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of hisbread to the poor…For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and yegave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye

took me in” (Proverbs 22:9; Matthew25:35). One of the most shocking evidences of

our time is the rejection of the poor. OneChristian article said we should act bibli-cally, quoting Scripture, “…if any wouldnot work, neither should he eat” (2 Thessa-lonians 3:10). That, however, applies to theChurch, and the Church family is obligatedto take care of their own.In our modern world where food and

luxury are available in abundance, the ten-dency of rejecting or disregarding the poorbecomes more obvious as days go by. TheApostle Paul quotes Psalm 112:9 in 2Corinthians 9:9, “As it is written, He hath

dispersed abroad; hehath given to thepoor: his righteous-ness remaineth for-ever.” 6308(For more on the Christian

6000-Year History of BarleyA team of scientists has successfullysequenced 6,000-year-old barleygrains, the oldest plants sequencedto date, and deduced that domesti-cation of the grain began in north-ern Israel.

The 6,000-year-old seeds were foundin an exceptionally inaccessible cave

100 meters below the lip of the ancientMasada fortress, near the Dead Sea. Giventhat reaching it involves climbing down asheer cliff face, the Yoram Cave most likelyserved as somebody’s prehistoric refugerather than a regular residence thousands ofyears ago. The extreme aridity of the area wasinvaluable to the preservation of the grainsover millennia.

Until now, examination of ancient plantshas been limited to looking at them andsearching for differences between themand present-day specimens.“Our analyses show that the seeds culti-

vated 6,000 years ago greatly differ geneti-cally from the wild forms we find today in theregion,” says Nils Stein, who directed thecomparison of the ancient genome with mod-ern genomes at the Leibniz Institute of PlantGenetics and Crop Plant Research in Ger-many, with help from Scotland’s James Hut-ton Institute and the University of Minnesota.“This demonstrates that the domestication ofbarley in the Fertile Crescent was already welladvanced very early,” he said, referring to theregion stretching from present-day Iraq andIran through Turkey and Syria into Lebanon,Jordan and Israel.“For us, ancient DNA works like a time

capsule that allows us to travel back inhistory and look into the domestication ofcrop plants at distinct time points in thepast,” says Johannes Krause, director ofthe Depar tment of Archaeogenetics at theMax Planck Institute for the Science of Hu-man History in Jena, Germany, which han-dled the actual sequencing process. The grains had been found in 2009, to-

gether with tens of thousands of otherplant specimens, in a dig managed by Dr.Uri Davidovich of Hebrew University and

Nimrod Marom from Haifa University. Weissled the archaeobotanical analysis. One surprise was the similarity between

the ancient barley and the modern domesti-cated lines in the region. “This similarity isan amazing finding considering to what ex-tent the climate, but also the local flora andfauna, as well as the agricultural methods, have changed over this long period of time,”says Martin Mascher of the Leibniz Instituteof Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research, the lead author of the study. The researcherssuspect that immigrants and conquerorscoming to the Levant did not bring cropseeds from their former homelands. Theysimply kept growing the local landrace—thebarley lines grown here all along.

-www.haaretz.com, 19 July 2016

Commentary: Barley is first mentioned inExodus 9:31, “And the flax and the barleywas smitten: for the barley was in the ear,and the flax was bolled.” The destructionof barley in the land of Egypt took placewhen the seventh plague came upon them.It was caused by a “very grievous hail,”which the Lord sent upon Pharaoh in re-sponse to his denial of Moses’ request to“Let my people go.” Barley is mentionedfor the last time in the last book of theBible, “And I heard a voice in the midstof the four beasts say, A measure of wheatfor a penny, and three measures of barleyfor a penny; and see thou hurt not the oiland the wine” (Revelation 6:6). This isrecorded in relationship to the opening ofthe third seal. Here we see that the valueof barley in comparison with wheat isonly one-third. Yet barley, as agriculturalscientists tell us, is more resistant to dis-ease, and grows in place where othergrains have difficulty.Barley, according to Unger’s Bible

Dictionary, was “the universal provenderfor horses, mules, and, to certain extent,

for asses (I Kings 4:28), taking the placeof oats.”Barley played an important prophetic

role during Gideon’s time too, “And whenGideon was come, behold, there was a manthat told a dream unto his fellow, and said,Behold, I dreamed a dream, and, lo, a cakeof barley bread tumbled into the host ofMidian, and came unto a tent, and smote itthat it fell, and overturned it, that the tentlay along” (Judges 7:13). Thus we see, “not

by might, nor bypower,” but the leastof the grains was thesymbol for the victoryof Gideon over Mid-ian. 6324(For more on Egypt, read

Trade with Israel to Tripleto $2.1 BillionThe commercial ties betweenMexico and Israel will be ex-panded, aiming at tripling cur-rent trade figures, according toIsrael’s ambassador in Mexico.

In 2015, two-way trade between thenations amounted to $700 million, a

300 percent increase since the nationssigned a trade agreement in 2000.“This is a very timely moment for the re-

lationship between Mexico and Israel, which is expressed at political, economicand cultural levels,” the ambassador,Jonathan Peled, told El Universal newspa-per, citing President Enrique Pena Nieto’sscheduled visit to Israel in 2017 as abooster of technological cooperation. The agreement will be updated as of

2017 to cover other areas such as invest-ment and services. Israel is Mexico’sbiggest trading par tner in the Middle Eastand 42nd globally.

Mexico’s expor ts to Israel include ce-ment, agriculture and mining products. Is-rael invests in the Latin American nation inthe fields of pharmaceuticals, agriculture, water technology, renewable energy, publicsecurity and technology.“We were one of the first to recognize Is-

rael, in 1950,” Mexico’s ambassador to Is-rael, Benito Andion, said in an interviewwith The Times of Israel last year. “OurJewish community is well integrated andwell respected, and it has wonderful tieswith other Mexican communities, as wellas with Israel. Many of our Jewish youthhave spent time in Israel and served in theIDF. To me, Israel and Mexico are a naturalfit.”

-www.virtualjerusalem.com, 18 July 2016

Commentary: This report simply showsthat trade agreements are mutually bene-ficial. That actually is the foundation ofthe so-called world of free enterprise, al-though in reality there is no such thing. It sometimes takes years to finalize andsign an agreement. We must recall that Columbus, a

Catholic Jew of Italian descent, discov-ered the American continent. Jews havelived in relative freedom here, with someshort-lived exceptions. But their home, according to Scripture, is the land oftheir fathers, “Eretz Israel.” Ezekiel39:28 has this to say about the Jews:“Then shall they know that I am the Lordtheir God, which caused them to be ledinto captivity among the heathen: but

I have gatheredthem unto theirown land, andhave left none ofthem any morethere.” 6323(For more on the Jews’

This one verse makes Israel uniqueamong all the people on the face ofthe earth. Israel’s experiences with

God are incomparable to anything thathas ever occurred on this planet. When Moses went before Pharaoh and

said, “Let my people go,” Pharaoh refused. Then followed ten supernatural signs, which all of Israel must have witnessed. The last one was the most horrible one;every firstborn of the families in the landof Egypt, including the firstborn of the an-imals, died. That was Egypt’s great tribula-tion, as we can read in Exodus 11:6: “Andthere shall be a great cry throughout allthe land of Egypt, such as there was nonelike it, nor shall be like it any more.” Wenote the words “…such as there was nonelike it, nor shall be like it any more.”The prophet Jeremiah continues: “And

hast given them this land, which thoudidst swear to their fathers to give them, aland flowing with milk and honey” (Jere-miah 32:22). On the way out of Egypt, they experienced multiple miracles. Prob-ably the most impressive one was the part-ing of the Red Sea; they all walkedthrough the body of water on dry ground. For forty years, they journeyed through

the desert in a miraculous way. Scriptureconfirms: “And I have led you forty yearsin the wilderness: your clothes are notwaxen old upon you, and thy shoe is notwaxen old upon thy foot” (Deuteronomy

29:5). Every single Israeli must have been100% convinced it was a miracle. I’venever heard of someone wearing the sameshoes for forty years and not having themwear out. Every Israeli experienced the di-rect intervention of God.But then we read: “And they came in,

and possessed it; but they obeyed not thyvoice, neither walked in thy law; they havedone nothing of all that thou command-edst them to do: therefore thou hastcaused all this evil to come upon them”(Jeremiah 32:23). These 41 words shouldconvince anyone that seeing is not believ-ing. For Christians, born of the Spirit of

God, it should be a warning not to seeksupernatural signs to confirm one’s faith. Iam reminded of the words of our founder,Wim Malgo, “When you experience God’ssupernatural intervention, it’s just a vaca-tion from faith.”About Israel, God says: “…they have

done nothing of all that thou command-edst them to do.” God’s chosen people, destined to be a light unto all people onthe face of the earth, are exposed as themost stubborn and rebellious peoplethere ever was. However, that’s not the end; God’s

promises are “yea and…Amen,” eternallyvalid. A few verses later we read: “Behold, Iwill gather them out of all countries, whither I have driven them in mine anger,

and in my fury, and in great wrath; and Iwill bring them again unto this place, andI will cause them to dwell safely: And theyshall be my people, and I will be theirGod” (Jeremiah 32:37-38). We notice thefour-fold “I will” of God. We may givecredit to the courage and inventiveness ofthe Jews, but the bottom line is still the “Iwill” of God. The Jews have returned andcontinue to return to the land of Israel. They have established a vibrant countrywith an intellectual capacity like no other.A recent article on Israel21c reports: The recently released Boston-Israel Study

commissioned by the New England-Israel

Business Council reveals that more than 200

Israeli businesses based in the Boston area

generated $9 billion of revenue for the state

of Massachusetts last year—making up

nearly four percent of the state’s GDP.

The study said that the rate of revenue

growth of the Israeli companies was more

than two times greater than the overall

growth of the Massachusetts economy be-

tween 2013 and 2015.

Highlights of the Boston-Israel Study show

that the companies led by Israelis directly

employed about 9,000 people in 2015 and

supported some 27,000 jobs based on the

multiplier effect of their demand for support

goods and services.

These companies secured more than

$1.2 billion in venture capital funding from

2013 to 2015, representing 10% of all VC

funds raised in the state, and they returned

nearly $10 billion to investors in M&A trans-

actions from 1999 through 2015.

The report noted that 2015 was marked

by the highest raised capital by Israeli-

founded businesses in the Boston area, and

the rate of investment is accelerating.

This is nothing short of a miracle. Is-raelis are at the forefront when it comesto innovation. If we ask why, the answeris rather simple: security. Israel’s ene-mies—whether it’s Hezbollah in thenorth, Hamas in the south, or ISIS inthe east—are the major contributors toIsrael’s innovation. It is precisely thatwhich the prophet also identifies inverse 39: “And I will give them oneheart, and one way, that they may fearme for ever, for the good of them, andof their children after them.” This newheart, new attitude, and fearless pioneerspirit is a gift from God for one specificpurpose: “…they shall be my people, and I will be their God.” That is yet tobe fulfilled. Answer: Reading the Old Testament,

we see that God pleads with His peo-

ple to believe, and they do not. Begin-

ning with Adam, he believed Satan

more than God. That caused Eve and

him to be expelled from paradise. The

last Adam, Jesus Christ, paid the price

for unbelief. Scripture says, “whoso-

ever believeth in him should not per-

ish, but have everlasting life” (John

3:16).

What must we do with Mark 16:16:

“He that believeth and is baptized

shall be saved; but he that believeth

not shall be damned”? Notice that

those who believe not are con-

demned, with nothing said about bap-

tism. Thus, the question, what type of

baptism does it speak of? Quite obvi-

ously, it is the baptism of the Holy

Spirit. Thus, we understand the Lord’s

words in John 3:5, “Except a man be

born of water and of the Spirit.” The

water is the Word of God. This is con-

firmed in Ephesians 5:26, “That he

might sanctify and cleanse it with the

washing of water by the word.”

The Catholics teach, “The Church

asks God that through His Son the

power of the Holy Spirit may be sent

upon the water, so that those who will

be baptized in it may be ‘born of water

and the Spirit’” (Catechism of the

Catholic Church, copyright 1994).

Believing is the key, “Believe on the

Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be

saved, and thy house” (Acts 16:31). If

water baptism is required for salva-

tion, then I participate in the act of sal-

vation; I have to work for it, and that is

contrary to Scripture.

Apostles and ProphetsDear Arno,On the back of the June Mid-

night Call is your ad for TheSure Foundation for the Church. Why do you say that there areno more apostles and prophets, when Ephesians 4:11 says oth-erwise?

-B. Pellitteri, NY

Answer: The answer to your question

is found in Ephesians 2:20, “(The

church is) built upon the foundation

of the apostles and prophets, Jesus

Christ himself being the chief corner

stone.” That is an existing foundation.

The apostles (only 12 according to

Revelation) passed on the Word of

God, and the Word of God is complete.

This is confirmed in the first two verses

of Hebrews, “God, who at sundry times

and in divers manners spake in time

past unto the fathers by the prophets,

Hath in these last days spoken unto us

by his Son.” That’s final; there is no

need for further “inspired Scripture.”

That is the reason we do not have apos-

tles and prophets today.

New Revelations? In the July issue, I noticed thatRené Malgo, the InternationalEditor-in-Chief, proudly states heis not afraid to criticize belovedand well-known works, such asthe account in the book HeavenIs for Real. So, I have a bit of criti-cism myself of the Editor. Whendid God quit revealing Himself? Ibelieve God can reveal Himself tous any way He chooses, whetherwe are alive, in a coma, or neardeath. It appears, like JohnMacArthur that you see God’spower as limited, no longer per-forming anything supernaturaltoday, especially through the av-erage Christian. Since when dowe really “know” someone byjust reading his book? Like theBible, I may have the AuthorizedVersion, but until I know theAuthor by being in His pres-ence, I don’t know Him. InJohn 5:39, Jesus told the Jews,“You study the Scriptures dili-gently because you think thatin them you have eternal life. These are the very Scripturesthat testify about me.” It’s sadthat some Christians will beleft behind as the Holy Spiritmoves without them. Like Icha-bod, you won’t even know it asit’s happening.

-C. Reynolds, GA

Answer: To your statement, “I believe

God can reveal Himself anyway He

chooses, whether we are alive, in a

coma or near death,” I give my whole-

hearted amen. But the question is,

why should He? Has He not revealed

Himself in Holy Scripture? Don’t we

have the full counsel of God for

mankind, recorded in the book begin-

ning with Genesis and ending in Reve-

lation? Do we have any Scriptural

basis that would require us to seek

signs, wonders, and supernatural man-

ifestation? The answer is absolutely

not; we live by faith, not by sight, the

Bible says. In conclusion, God has re-

vealed Himself; He has done every-

thing, “For God so loved the world, that

he gave his only begotten Son, that

whosoever believeth in him should

not perish, but have everlasting life”

(John 3:16).

Wine and Grape JuiceDear Brother Arno,I love the Midnight Call and

anxiously await its arrival eachmonth. I usually agree withyour stand on biblical truth, but was very disappointed withyour answer to S. Thomas, NCon “Drinking Wine” in the Jan-uary “Letters to the Editor.”You immediately referred to di-etary laws, which do not seemto apply to the writer’s ques-tion. The question was the ca-sual use of alcohol—a goodquestion in today’s culture.Alcohol is and has been the

drug of choice the world oversince Noah disgraced himselfin Genesis 9:21. The trail ofmisery, poverty, bloodshed, broken families, and ruinedChristian testimonies is

recorded in history and in ourpresent day newspapers. Ourconcern should be: what doesthe Bible say about it? The warn-ing in Proverbs alone should set-tle the matter. “Wine is amocker, strong drink is raging:and whosoever is deceivedthereby is not wise” (Proverbs20:1). “Look not thou upon thewine when it is red, when itgiveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright”(23:31). It then goes on to accu-rately describe the alcoholic(verses 29-35).Since alcohol impairs one’s

judgment, how can self-controlbe assured by those that hold to“moderation”? There never wasan addict that did not take thefirst drink. It soon becomes obvious that

there are two kinds of wine:“good” and “worse” (John 2:10).Fresh or new wine was a pre-mium in times where there wasno refrigeration. Fermentationquickly begins, which is the be-ginning of the decaying processand referred to in the Bible as“corruption.”In modern times the manu-

facturing of fermented wine canbe controlled by sealing it in air-tight bottles, thereby stabilizingthe alcohol content. But other-wise, the fermentation continuesuntil it becomes sour or turns tovinegar. This is what they evi-dently offered Jesus on thecross, which He refused. It waspermissible to offer this to adeeply distressed person as asedative. “Give strong drinkunto him that is ready to perish,

and wine unto those that be ofheavy hearts” (Proverbs 31:6).The other use would be medici-nal, as Paul’s advice to Timothyfor his stomach ailment (1 Timo-thy 5:23).I know that in some cultures,

especially in Europe, alcoholicwine is the traditional tabledrink, but nonalcoholic juice is awonderful supplement to mostdiets.

-W. Butcher, MD

Answer: Does wine mean grape juice?

Not so. You give reference to John 2:10,

which actually proves the intoxication

of that wine: “when men have well

drunk” (you can’t get drunk on grape

juice), the drinking person will consume

any inferior products thereafter. Not so

where food is concerned: after being

full, we desire something delicate—

dessert.

Why do I publish the wine issue?

Simply to warn against falsifying Scrip-

ture; twisting one fact leads to a dan-

gerous road whereby one twists more.

In most of the former colonial countries,

I notice the tendency of ministers of the

gospel to create a new miracle: turning

wine into grape juice. We do not en-

dorse, nor forbid consumption of alco-

hol or, for that matter, any food available

on the market. But, we are duty bound

to warn against deliberate, misleading

interpretation of Holy Scripture.

Book of EnochHello Mr. Froese,I have recently learned about

the Book of Enoch (I’m a littlebehind) and have a question foryou. I admire Enoch, who ismentioned in Genesis 5:22-24,stating that Enoch walked with

God for 300 years, and then theFather took him home. Regard-ing the passion and love Enochhad for the Father and walkingwith Him personally for such along length of time, I couldn’thelp but think of the depth oftheir relationship, and the wis-dom Enoch had of the Fatherfor knowing Him so well. I wasexcited to hear about the Bookof Enoch, but I’m leery aboutpursuing and reading the bookbecause it’s not in the Word. Iknow Jude makes reference toEnoch in verse 14 of his book. Ihave read a lot of back and forthonline on whether the Book ofEnoch is reputable or not. Themain reason I’m interested isthat I, like any Christian, wouldlove to read a firsthand accountof their relationship, and anygodly wisdom Enoch hadshared. Since you are a man ofGod and I trust your opinion, Iwanted to hear your thoughts onthe Book of Enoch. I don’t wantto pollute my mind with any-thing that isn’t in accordancewith our Father.

-M. Heard, GA

Answer: Regarding the Book of Enoch, I

have not read it, and the reason is this

would interfere with my regular reading

of Holy Scripture and many resources

we produce. I agree with your line, “I’m

leery about pursuing and reading the

book because it’s not in the Word.”

Nevertheless, I encourage reading,

and that includes the Book of Enoch or

the books of the Apocrypha contained

in various versions of the Bible. It’s defi-

nitely educational, and in some cases

broadens one’s horizons.

According to the results of recent surveys,Americans overwhelmingly believe that HEAVEN exists, though a much smaller num-ber believe that HELL exists, with only one-tenth of one percent believing they will gothere when they die. Gary Frazier helps readers:

When I walked out of the theater after watching Heaven Is for Real, I felt uncomfortable, for the almost subliminal messagewas that, eventually, all people go to Heaven. Since the movie did not show the Biblicalroad to heaven, it leaves a message that all people will go there.Since the danger to people’s souls is so great and is ETERNAL, Frazier speaks boldly

and compassionately as he gives the full Biblical teaching about what Hell is and why itis so terrible. Most of Frazier’s warnings come directly from the lips of Jesus, since Hetaught more about Hell than any other subject, and more than any other inspired Bibleteacher.Gary Frazier also weaves into this subject the most common misconceptions people

have about Hell: For example:1) I will party with my friends in Hell for eternity.2) Eventually all people go to Heaven.3) A loving God will never send anyone to Hell.4) I am a good person and all good persons go to Heaven.5) Frazier carefully explains the ETERNITY of Hell, a concept most unsaved just do not

seem to comprehend.6) Hell is so real and so terrible, Frazier urges people to make the decision NOW to

repent and ask forgiveness of sin through the blood sacrifice of Jesus, before God closesthe Age of Grace.

Frazier ends with the Plan of Salvation, so this video becomes a valuable Soul-Winning Tool.

Dear Fellow Believers,Reading or hearing the world

news media, we realize we are liv-ing in a tumultuous time. One sen-sational news article is followed byanother, seemingly even morenerve-racking. Many ask: what are

we to expect of the future? The answer is rather simple:the believer, born of the Spirit of God, is looking for-ward to a glorious future. Thus, my recommendation isto turn our attention to eternal things, clearly revealedfrom Genesis to Revelation. When reading the Scripture, we notice a diametri-

cally opposed message to what the world longs for:peace, prosperity, security, and better times, exclu-sively based on man’s own accomplishments. But theapostle Paul, inspired by the Holy Spirit, does not giveus promises of comfort or success in this present world.Rather, he emphasizes a totally different kind of riches, glory and strength; namely, that of the Spirit in the innerman. We live “by faith, not by sight.” This Scriptureleads us in a spiritual direction, that we “…may be ableto comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, andlength, and depth, and height….” This is not an earthly

promise, but a heavenly one. It is all centered in knowl-edge of the love of Christ. In light of these and other Scriptures, we immedi-

ately realize that this is totally different than what wehear today. Nothing is mentioned about political elec-tions, Islamic warfare, global merchandising, refugees, and innumerable other items the world is burdenedwith. We, as believers in Jesus Christ, know what has hap-

pened in the past, what’s taking place today, and whatthe future holds. The Bible admonishes us, “Ask me ofthings to come…” (Isaiah 45:11). The Lord Himself pro-claims, “I have declared the former things from the be-ginning; and they went forth out of my mouth, and Ishowed them; I did them suddenly, and they came topass” (Isaiah 48:3).We do not need special revelation, i.e. additional

prophetic utterances; there is no need for supernaturalsigns and miracles to confirm our faith. We have the liv-ing Word of God, which dwells in our hearts by faith. That, dear friends, is what is necessary for believers

today more than ever. We must not permit ourselves tobe placed in bondage by the news media, no matter inwhat form: radio, television, internet, etc. We are a dif-

“That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory,to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehendwith all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, andheight; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God”(Ephesians 3:16-19).
