Shopping In Adelaide Districts Worth Checking Out

Adelaide has some fantastic shopping districts for all types of shoppers. For the new and confused international student, here are some main shopping districts around town that you might like to know about:

A great place to start is the City. It is very easy to find your way around here, with many buses running to and from the city regularly. The main shops to see generally run in a line, from Rundle Street, through Rundle Mall and down Hindley Street. For those looking for something a little different, check out some of the stores in town such as the Synagogue Place Market Bazaar (off Rundle Street) and the Eqyptian Bazaar on Hindley Street.

Glenelg is an excellent place to shop whilst being a mere few steps away from the beach front. Grab a tasty feast for lunch at one of the many cafés whilst you browse the shops lining the local hot spot that is Jetty Road. Some classics include Zero and Krypton Discs.

Harbour Town is Adelaide’s answer to cheap factory outlet shopping. Newly extended, it is situated right next to the airport, and has over 90 shops with greatly reduced lines. Definitely not to be missed if you are serious about your bargain-hunting.

One must also check out Adelaide’s biggest shopping centre, Westfield Marion. There is generally something for everybody here. With over 300 stores, everything from sports stores, surf shops, department stores, gaming, fashion, and electrical; you are guaranteed to leave, dragging behind you, numerous bargain ‘buys’.

Norwood is definitely the classy end of suburbia. Complemented by the various gourmet cafés and restaurants, Norwood is well known for its gorgeous but pricey boutiques. There are some relatively cheaper shops, however the main attractions are the fancy one-off numbers, which those of you with the extra cash might like to seek out. If you like Norwood, also check out the shops on Unley Road and King William Road.

In some areas of the world, buying second-hand clothes is not that common. Here in Adelaide, the local students love it! The second-hand clothes stores are called op shops and are a great way to find pieces of clothing that one rarely finds anywhere else! If hunting for weird and funky clothes interests you, maybe you should take a peek at this little list below. Searching through op shops may just make your day, as you might

just stumble across a fashion gold mine! However, it is true; most of what line the racks of your general Goodwill or Vinnies stores (the basic op shops) are the fashion world’s biggest regret; the 90s. However, never fear, there are some lovely ladies who have scoured the best of these shops just for you, and restored them to sell in their dainty decked-out retro stores. Although most have had their prices re-looked at too, it is well worth the buy, knowing that some classic clothes have been restored to their stunning original condition. These shops showcase the best of each era, and are worth visiting regularly if you’re a fashion lover. Here are a few great vintage stores to check out, the rest are for you to find!

Adelaide has its own “Little India” in Market Street, just off Gouger Street in the Central Market region. It has one of the most comprehensive Indian supermarkets, which stocks food and other brands very familiar to Indians. One can find haldiram namkeens (salted savouries) and sohn papdi, ruchi achaars (pickles), dabur products and the like.

For the vegetarian Indians who can cook, there are plenty of choices; daals (lentils), rajma (red kidney beans), choley (chickpeas), masalas (spices), ghee, papad, achaar, rotis, paneer (cottage cheese), lassi and basmati rice (which by the way, is cheaper than in India!). The Central Market and most supermarkets offer fresh fruit and vegetables, most of which are grown locally (within an hours drive of the market!). I have seen vegetables such as exotic asour karela (bitter gourd) and baingan (egg plant), and fruits `as Indian as mangoes’ in the markets in Adelaide. There are a number of new vegetables too and one can always experiment with them.

There is no lack of eating out places for the Indian vegetarian. Although almost all restaurants serve vegetarian food (no matter what the cuisine), for those looking for Indian food, there are a number of options. We know what it’s like when deciding where to eat in Adelaide. It’s hard. It’s especially hard

when you are new to the city and have no idea where anything is! Adelaide offers a wide range

of restaurants for the students with a bit of spare money and for those who are on a tight

budget.

Eating out in the city is the best place to start, with Rundle Street being as central as you can get. Along

Rundle you will find interesting restaurants serving food from around the world at varied prices; a true

Adelaide eating out experience! We also recommend trying Gouger Street, the home of

multiculturalism in Adelaide and the best place to find a meal from different nationalities. Melbourne

Street and Oxford Street, located just outside the CBD in North Adelaide, offers some of the biggest and

best pub meals as well as some high class Mexican food among other cool restaurants.

To help you, we have asked students where they think

are the best places to check out and why. Among the

following pages, you will find reviews of the best budget

eats, casual restaurants, cafés, Halal and vegetarian

restaurants as recommended by local and international

students.

Ordering a good cup of coffee in Adelaide is harder than you

might think! Luckily, Kim Martin, a local student and coffee

lover, is here to give you a helping hand.

Firstly, let’s go through the different types of coffees that most

places offer as the many choices can certainly be confusing.

Like alcohol, there is a standard measurement of coffee in each

drink. An espresso is 1 shot of straight coffee. A ristretto is half of

an espresso. The most popular of coffees is probably the latte,

sometimes known as a café latte.

- A latte is a standard strength coffee (1 shot of espresso) which

is topped up with hot milk and a little creamy froth on the top.

- A cappuccino is another standard strength milky coffee but has

more froth and a sprinkle of chocolate powder on top.

- Long blacks are often slightly stronger tasting than both the

latte and the cappuccino because instead of topping the shot of

espresso with warm milk, hot water is added to create a dark, hot

coffee.

You can choose to order any of them ‘tall’ which is coffee-

speak for ‘large’ but make sure you check with the barista

(coffee maker) to make sure they add more espresso too or

else your coffee becomes quite weak.

Popular ‘short’ coffees are:

- An espresso (or short black) which is simply a shot of coffee- A macchiato which is an espresso with just a bit of milk in it.These are great for a quick hit of caffeine or if you feel like a

coffee but just can’t fit one in after a great meal!

My favourite coffee houses include Illy, Un Café Bar

(North Terrace, Rundle Street, King William Road Hyde

Park and more), Lucia’s (an Adelaide favourite located in

the Central Markets), and on Rundle Street in Kent Town

is Simply Coffee where the staff not only make and sell

amazing coffee, but are keen to educate you in the finer

points of this popular drink.

Adelaide may be a small city compared to where you’re from, but the students of our city know where to party, and soon, so will you!

Rundle Street is the place to head for uni students wanting to relax on a Friday afternoon. This is located in the east end of Adelaide city. Rundle Street gets very busy at night with students and city workers. The street is filled with great bars, clubs, pubs, restaurants and late-night cafés. Rundle Street is an easy street to feel safe and relaxed on, which is why students often blend a Friday afternoon beer on Rundle Street into a night out on the town.

For those looking for some cranking nightclubs, there are great ones scattered all around the city, but the best place to check out is Hindley Street. This is the party centre of Adelaide and where the true party people go. There are plenty of pumping dance clubs on this street with some of the world’s best DJs playing in various clubs here. If you stay out late enough, you might see some hungry local students eating a Yiros, a necessity for a night out on Hindley! Other great nightlife areas are Gouger Street, North Adelaide and Glenelg.

Party Time A Guide To Nightlife

Alcohol Unlike in many countries, light beer in Australia means low alcohol content, not low fat! So if you don’t feel like a big night, stick to light drinks. A popular one for girls is white moscato wine. Virgin cocktails (no alcohol) are also very popular for the non-drinkers.

In Adelaide, a standard size shot is 30ml, a schooner of beer in the city is 285ml, a pint is 425ml and an imperial pint is 570ml.

Different City, Different Laws!In some countries, driving while under the influence of alcohol isn’t harshly prosecuted. NOT HERE! If you get caught with a prescribed blood alcohol level over .05%, you can lose your licence, get handed a substantial fine and may even lose your student visa! It’s not worth it. Remember, if you are on your L or P plates, you cannot have any alcohol in your system. Drinking outside of licensed venues or a private property is also illegal. This is a new city for you and there are new laws you need to abide by.

Wild Kangaroo Island

After taking the ferry, travelling through deep blue waters, we arrived at the jetty. The sunny weather and the friendly, relaxed, but also informative staff of the information site/souvenir shop, set me in a calm laid-back mood. One thing you realise shortly after your arrival is the original and rugged landscape, the Kangaroo Island scenery is exactly as it looks in photographs. After driving through the sandy and beautifully coloured landscape, we arrived at the lookout, and had a magnificent view over vast parts of the island, including the bay, where lines of different blue tones marked the depths of the sea. Another highlight was the nightly walk through the bushy dunes, finally arriving at the beach. Fitting to the island’s wild atmosphere, the islands animals such as the seals live very natural lives, luckily mostly undisturbed by man.

My favourite part was Little Sahara, which is a huge sand dune that you can either walk along or roll down! The beaches are great for just relaxing and enjoying the sea breeze. For me, Kangaroo Island is a must see part of South Australia and I hope you can get over there as well!

The Insider found out about Globe Medicalby asking students where they go to see a doctor. We spoke to the staff at Globe Medical and asked why they are the preferred choice for OSHC medical care. This is what they said...

ExpertiseWe specialise in providing GP (OSHC) medical care for international students living in Adelaide. Our expert team of male and female doctors is here to help and we have access to interpreters. We know how OSHC works and will coordinate with medical specialists to minimise any out-of-pocket expenses a student could incur.

A Caring TeamOur team understands the difficulties associated with adjusting to a new culture, while studying, working and coping with the pressures of living away from home. This is why we provide educational articles to help students with common health issues. These are provided in hardcopy when you visit our clinic, or can be viewed on our website.

Affordable FeesOur direct billing OSHC partners are Worldcare, AHM, BUPA Australia and Medibank Private. If students have OSHC with one of these insurers, they will only pay “the gap” of $15 for a standard consultation and $20 for a long consultation.

Convenient Opening HoursOur doctors consult 9.30am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday. For added convenience, we operate a Thursday night extended session and we are open on Saturday mornings. See our website for more details.

Australia’s health care system can be very confusing for international students. It is a condition of your visa that you have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), which means you should to go to doctor’s surgeries that can send the bill direct to your insurance provider. This is called bulk billing and means you only have to pay the difference between what is owed to the doctor and what your insurance will cover, also known as the ‘gap’. Also, most OSHC providers will not cover any private health care; so do not let your doctor recommend you to a private hospital for x-rays and surgical procedures unless absolutely necessary, or else it will end up costing you a small fortune! Here are some doctor’s surgeries that bulk bill and understand the conditions of OSHC. They also offer print outs and helpful information that you can take home with you in case you didn’t understand exactly what the doctor was saying:

Medical Help - Finding A Doctor In Adelaide

Finding a place to live in Adelaide can be a long and scary process. You want to find somewhere quickly but you don’t want to choose a place that is going to cause you problems. Most problems arisebetween international students and their landlord because the students have not paid enoughattention to the contract they have entered. Some landlords will try and take advantage of you! You must be careful and know what your rights are. You can find them on the Adelaide Uni website in the accommodation section.www.adelaide.edu.au/accommodation

Here are a few tips that will help you stay out of trouble.

- Make sure you know if you have entered under a fixed term or a periodic tenancy. If you sign an agreement, you should receive a copy straight away.

- A bond payment is usually requested. If you rent for less than $250 a week, the landlord cannot ask for more than the equivalent of four weeks rent as a bond. However, if you rent for more than $250 a week, the landlord can ask for the equivalent of six weeks rent as a bond payment.

- A landlord can ask for 2 weeks rent in advance, but no more.

- Make sure you write down any pre-existing problems when you first receive your inspection sheet. This will help when you have to dispute any repairs with the landlord at the end of your stay.

- Make sure you agree with your landlord about water use. How much are you responsible for?

- Pay attention to the details regarding the ending of your tenancy agreement. If you leave without giving notice, you can get in real trouble!

Ok, so you have arrived and like many have just realised that you should probably start earning some money so you can finance your amazing Adelaide experience! If you haven’t got your student visa, here is how you get it.

How To Get A Student Visa With Work Rights The easiest way to get one is to head to your Student Support Office at your educational facility and ask for a form called ‘Student Visa with Permission to Work: Request for Education Provider Declaration’. Fill this in and give it back to the office. Three days later, go online and fill out the application available at the website for the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC). Here is the link:

https://www.ecom.immi.gov.au/visas/html/questionaire/Students_Self_Selection_2_PTW.htm

Once you have done that, wait until you get an email from the DIAC that will let you know if your visa has been approved. If it has, take your passport to the DIAC so you can get a new visa label.

How To Find A JobChances are, if you are only here for a short time, the jobs that you will likely get are in the industries with a high turnover rate like hospitality and retail. If you want to get a job in these industries, or any other industry, you must have a good resume. This is the way to let employers know if you are the right person. Go to your Student Support Office and get them to help you make one, or go to www.workinsa.com.au. Go to the following websites and send out resumes to your potential employers!

- WorkinSA.com.au - Careerone.com.au- Seek.com.au- Worldworkers.com.au- Maxima.com.au- Mycareer.com.au

It is then worth walking around and handing your resumes out to businesses. Talk to local students and see if they know of anything available. This might be uncomfortable at first but it is often very effective!

Good luck and happy job-hunting!52
