“Leaders focus on the mission. A good leader remains focused. Controlling your destination

is better than being controlled by it.” -Jack Welch

Greetings Sorors and Fraters!

Distractions are the bane of the ineffective leader. Like a hound chasing two rabbits at once, the

unproductive leader changes directions frequently. Consequently, his or her followers become confused

and frustrated. Never knowing exactly what to do, they usually end up doing nothing.

But productive leaders have a single focus. They “chase” one thing at a time. They’ve narrowed their

attention. They know what needs to be done, and they know what they will have to do to accomplish it.

They’ve zeroed in on the mission. They also know what resources are available to carry out the mission.

They know how to gather manpower for the task. Focused leaders usually don’t lack followers. People

with a mind to work naturally gravitate to someone who is able to give them good directions.

Effective leaders understand what team skills are needed. They know who the team specialists are, and

they understand whose individual talents are best suited for the assignment.

Effective leaders are not interested in doing ten good things. They want to do one thing and do it right.

Remember that we are still working together to “Break Barriers, Bridge Gaps, and Build Leaders!”

Breast Cancer Awareness within the Houston community was provided through the creative theatre presenta-

tion production “Before Time Runs Out” in partnership with Baylor College of Medicine Dan L. Duncan Can-

cer Center. Zeta Chi members participated in facilitating activities of the presentation centering on the chal-

lenges faced by a woman diagnosed with breast cancer. The audience interacted in a question and answer peri-

od with an onsite physician from the Harris Health System at the conclusion of the play. Questionnaires exam-

ining pre and post attitudes and knowledge about breast cancer were completed by the audience and collected.

The Informer Fall 2015

After dinner as my family was getting ready to play a game, my four year old grandson

Langston, hollered out: “I want to be the leader.” I asked “Why do you want to be the

leader?” He replied “So I can tell everybody what to do.” Unfortunately that is why

many people want to become a leader. Leading people is an honor that has much more

responsibility than just telling people what do. We are all leaders to some degree.

Therefore, when we assume a leadership role, we become a leader with a position.

I am not talking about management when I say leadership. Management and leadership

are two different functions. Leadership refers to an individual’s ability to influence, mo-

tivate, and enable others to contribute toward organizational success. Influence and in-

spiration separate leaders from managers, not power and control.

If you have the drive and desire to become a leader, then start where you are right now.

Examine your real reasons before throwing your hat in the leadership ring. Ask your-

self: What are my strengths? What can I contribute? Do I know how to get up off the

canvas when faced with adversity? Do I value people? What skills am I missing? Am I

willing to learn from others? Do I have the patience to allow others that I am leading to

grow? Achieving a leadership position is a vision for many nurses and other profession-

als who want to make a difference in the organization and their followers. When you are

a leader, there is a quickening in your heart that spurts out joy and passion that is im-

measurable. Granted, there are difficult days but the joy and the passion that you have

for leadership reel you back in on target.

Legislation was introduced on October 7, 2015 to bring advanced practice

nurses under the Sunshine Act, a section of the Affordable Care Act that requires

drug and device makers to tell the government what they give physicians. The idea is

to discourage conflicts of interest that could cause a physician to favor treatments that

are not the best for the patient's health or pocketbook. Advocates of transparency in

the relationship between clinicians and industry (drug and device makers) have called

the omission of Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants a significant loophole in

the law. If this legislation is passed, advanced nurse practitioners may be required to

report cash and in-kind payments (such as dinners attended to learn of latest medical

advances and travel) received from pharmaceutical companies to the federal govern-

ment (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services). Reportable information can be

searched and tracked on a federal website.
