advantages and disadvantages of the industrial

revolution. It will include the concerns of boththe living and working conditions at the time.

The problems will be presented along withcomparisons with other industrialist towns at

the time.

The Concerns About The Conditions in Bradford

The conditions in Bradford around the time of the industrial revolution were pretty bad:

• Living conditions were very cramped and tight.

• Young children were forced to work along with women

• Pollution increased in Bradford with smoke from the factories and smoke clouds thundering over the city.

• The Whole of Bradford was littered with waste and garbage as toilets were simply holes in the ground or little buckets which were emptied outside.

The concerns (part 2)

• Working conditions were very bad as they were also crowded. You would have to work long hours for a low wage.

• Cholera, a disease originated from India, arrived in Bradford and spread rapidly killing half the population.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Working conditions at the time were verypoor. The whole family would have to go outand work. Factories let of smoke and fumes

and the whole atmosphere inside was terrible.The chances of hurting yourselves were veryhigh. Hours were long and often started early

in the morning and finished late at night.

LIVING CONDITIONSLiving conditions in Bradford were worse thenworking conditions. There would often be a largefamily living in a one or two bed roomed house.People virtually slept on top of each other. One ofthe streets was described as:‘Damp, no ventilation, a toilet was 10 feet threeinches from the door….’Most of the streets were like this and variousdiseases were spread because of this problem.

CHILD LABOURDuring the time of the industrial revolutionchildren as young as 6 or 7 were expected togo out and work along side their mothers

andfathers. Parents may not have wanted theirchildren to have to work in such places, asmills and factories, but at the end of the dayany money that was bought in would be very

helpful.

The Conditions In Manchester

The conditions in Manchester were just as bad asthey were in Bradford. There were a lot of jobsavailable, so people came from other places in hopeof gaining employment. Owners were asked toprovide their employees with suitable housing. Theowners didn’t want to spend too much money sothey provided cheap and filthy housing. Workinghours were long and the pay wasn’t nearly enoughif you had a large family.

Conditions In Saltaire

Conditions in Saltaire were much better thenin Bradford and Manchester. Owner of thewhole town, was Sir Titus Salt. He was a kindowner and his motto was:‘Good housing, good workers’And this worked. He provided suitable housing forhis workers, depending on what their position was

atthe mills. The general workers house would consistof a back yard with an outside lavatory, downstairswould be a Kitchen and a living room. Upstairswould be two bedrooms.
