With a record USD 35 billion invested in 2018 alone and USD 200 billion in the last 2 decades, the Indian AIF industry has emerged from its boutique, cottage industry status in the 1990s and 2000s to becoming a solid asset class, both for investors and investees. Along the way, the industry has had its fair share of bouquets and brickbats, but has continued to grow and evolve in a capital decient but increasingly risk aware market. e asset class has also attained new dimensions from its initial venture equity focus to a diversity of opportunities in its current state including – venture equity, venture debt, growth equity, buyouts (large cap and mid cap), roll-ups, real estate equity and debt through funds and platform companies, yield bearing commercial realty through funds and REITs, Infrastructure funds, platforms and InVITs. e industry now has a good presence of both home grown fund managers and global rms. From a returns perspective, over USD 25 billion worth exits happened in 2018 alone taking the last 3 year tally to about USD 50 billion. But have alternates indeed delivered superior returns and can the promise be sustained in future? What are the lessons for rst time investors from investors who have participated in these asset classes historically? Is the regulatory and taxation environment supportive?
