The impact of new technology on media industries

Criteria Pro Con

Quality The effects now can be done on computer with CGI rather than with props, making the effects more believable.

The upgrade in technologies will go against the tradition so traditionalists thinks it will take away from the narrative.

Cost-cutting Digital Cameras record sound as well, so less equipment needs buying.

Cinemas will need to upgrade their equipment which will not cut the cost so much.

Piracy Pirated copies of the movie will be a lower quality than the actual film because of the equipment used to record the movie whilst being screened.

The pirated copies are illegal and allow people to see the film at a cheaper price or for free, affecting to Box-office rating.

Exhibition The films will look more appealing to their audiences and therefore more people will see the films cinemas are showing.

If a film company has a lower budget for their film then it means they can’t distribute to a mass audience.

Marketing Reaches the target audience in many aspects of their lives

Again if a film company has a lower budget, this becomes challenging.

Criteria Pro Con

Access With the internet, it allows more people to be made aware of the film.

Not everyone will have access to the internet, such as older audiences.

Marketing A wide range of audience will be available to the films.

Films made by Hollywood will compete to be marketed to a wider audience.

Audience as producers A film that the audience wants to see can be produced.

If too many ideas are made and put into a project, the film can be spoilt.
