from the DireCtor

The first association many people have with The Imaginary Invalid is that it’s a satire of the medical profession. While that’s certainly one aspect of the play, I don’t quite see it as the play’s dominant theme. Argan’s hypochondria, his manic pursuit of a cure for his “ills” is, deeper down, an expression of a less definable emotional ache. Argan substitutes a list of imagined maladies for that ache, so to convince himself a material solution is possible. As a variation on that theme, his daughter Angélique similarly “aches”. She, too, thinks the solution lies outside of herself, in her case in the object of her affections, Cléante. If she can just have Cléante, all will be well.

Argan and Angélique each ache, but each in the ways typical of their age: Angélique pines romantically, while Argan grieves the slipping physical and social power that can come with aging. Indeed, his insistence that he’s ill is as attention getting as anything else -- if he’s sick and dying, well, nobody will have license to leave him.

Both Argan and Angélique are naïve or foolish in their own ways. Of course none of us can ever fully escape life’s pangs, though there’s good fun in seeing others try. While ultimately there are no panaceas, how human to believe there are, and how funny to grasp for them. And Molière has created a world of delightful freaks in The Imaginary Invalid, each passionately grasping for silver bullets. To our good fortune, James Magruder has written a spirited and contemporary translation/adaptation of the play that captures the full verve and hilarity of the 1673 original. We hope you enjoy it.

about the authors

molière (Jean-baptiste poquelin) (1622-1673) remains one of France’s best known playwrights. Born in Paris, Molière’s father was a prosperous merchant, but his mother died when he was ten. He attended Jesuit school then briefly pursued a degree in law before choosing a career in theatre. At the age of twenty-one Molière founded the Illustre Théâtre with a group of friends. The company was never able to compete with established theatres in Paris, so eventually Molière joined an itinerant company led by the actor

Charles Dufresne. The company received the patronage of the king’s brother, which led to a command performance before Louis XIV in 1658. They performed Molière’s own farce The Fleet-footed Doctor which amused the king so much that he granted Molière the use of a Paris theater. Molière was best known for his “comédie-ballet” style. He created a skillful patterning of dialogue which is designed to enhance the typically intense physical presentation of the play. People also took notice of his choice of content — a satiric commentary on society that explores eternal human foibles and obsessions. Not surprisingly the plays had many detractors. For example, his study of religious hypocrisy, Tartuffe, was denounced by the church and proscribed by Parliament after its premiere in 1664. Revised twice, the ban was not lifted until 1669. Molière fared little better with Don Juan (1665); its free-thinking title character incurred the wrath of the censors immediately after opening night and the play disappeared from the repertoire. Still, by 1665, Molière’s company was awarded regular pensions from the crown, and took the title of La Troupe du Roi. The Misanthrope and The Doctor in Spite of Himself premiered a year later, followed by The Miser (1668) and The Learned Ladies (1672). Molière’s last play proved to be The Imaginary Invalid in 1673. During the fourth performance Molière, ironically playing the hypochondriac Argan, was seized with a genuine coughing fit and died later that night.

James magruDer (Translation/Adaptation) is a fiction writer, playwright, and translator. His translations and adaptations for the stage include Christmas Carol 1941, Marivaux’s The Triumph Of Love (Center Stage, Classic Stage Company, La Jolla Playhouse), the book for its musical version, Triumph Of Love (Broadway and beyond, Germany, and Japan), Labiche’s Eating Crow, Lesage’s Turcaret, Dancourt’s Knight Errant, Molière’s The Imaginary Invalid, Bougie Man, The Miser, and Gozzi’s The Love of Three Oranges. His plays Penelope & the Sterile Field, Too Much of Me, Nine Rooms Worth, Dead Parents, Pissing Match, and Dunkler-Related Disorders have been staged in Baltimore, Atlanta, and New York, and published in The Art of the One-Act, Third Coast, and Arts & Letters. His Three French Comedies was named an Outstanding Literary Translation by the American Literary Translators Assoc. His writing has been supported by the MacDowell Colony, where he was a Thornton Wilder Fellow; the Maryland State Arts Council; the New Harmony Project; the Ucross Foundation; the Blue Mountain Center; the Jerome Foundation; and the 2010 Sewanee Writers’ Conference, where he was a Walter E.
