The Nikon Creative Lighting System supports Advanced Wireless Lighting and itsnumerous possibilities for up to four i-TTL Speedlight groups controlled via themaster SB-800 Speedlight. This capability significantly enhances the value ofNikon’s D2H/D70 digital SLR cameras and SB-800/SB-600 Speedlights.Nikon’s Creative Lighting System also offers i-TTL flash control, an evolution ofthe highly regarded D-TTL system. Enjoy new features such as Flash Value Lock(FV Lock), AUTO FP High Speed Sync, Flash Color Information Communicationand Wide-Area AF-Assist Illuminator for the D2H’s 11-area AF system and D70’sFive-area AF system.

i-TTL Balanced Fill-FlashThe new i-TTL Flash Control system sup-ports Automatic Balanced Fill-Flash thatdelivers outstanding results as well as newcreative possibilities. Nikon’s newAdvanced Data Communication system fea-tures a new method for performing monitorpre-flash and improved wireless operation. This new technology takes flash controlsystem precision to unprecedented levels.Advanced Wireless LightingThanks to Nikon’s Creative LightingSystem, Advanced Wireless Lighting (sameas “wireless multiple flash”) is as easy touse as an on-camera Speedlight, enablingprofessionals and advanced amateurs aliketo freely test the seemingly limitless cre-ative potential of the system. You can sepa-

rate i-TTL Speedlights into four groups(comprised of the master* and threeremote i-TTL Speedlight groups), for com-prehensive control over scene lighting.Independent flash mode settings (TTL,Auto Aperture [Non-TTL Auto], Manual,Repeating and Flash Cancel) and any-timeadjustment of flash output level compensa-tion values for each group can be con-trolled from the master. There is no limit to the number ofSpeedlights contained in each group, givingyou virtually absolute control over back-ground illumination.*SB-600 cannot be used as a master unit.

Setting:The master SB-800 attached tothe D2H is employed solely totrigger the remote units. Two SB-800s (Group A) with blue colorfilters illuminate the main sub-jects from the left and right front. One SB-800 (Group B) fitted witha red color filter illuminates thewall of the house in the back-ground. The illumination of thebackground fog (from behind) andthe window to the right is per-formed by the Group C SB-800s.

The ability to adjust the flash output level of every flash unit from the camera gives youthe freedom to experiment with a variety of settings much faster and more simply thanwith conventional systems. For convenience in pre-shooting lighting confirmation, there’sthe Modeling flash function.

Nikon Creative Lighting System

Advanced Wireless LightingUsing the master unit’s LCD, you can set the flash modeand flash output level compensation values independentlyfor each group (A, B and C) and the master unit (M).

Advanced Wireless Lighting procedure (when TTL mode is selected for each Speedlight unit)In Advanced Wireless Lighting, flash mode and other typesof information are transmitted to each remote unit in theform of a series of low-level flashes from the master unit.In TTL mode, the camera’s exposure metering sensordetects Monitor Pre-flashes to determine each flash unit’sflash output level.

The SB-800 is a high-performance Speedlight with a large guide numberof 38 (ISO 100, m) or 53 (ISO 200, m) at the 35mm zoom-head position.Depending on the camera and lens used with the SB-800, you canemploy TTL auto flash, Non-TTL flash, and Manual flash control. Otherfeatures include a built-in wide-flash adapter for 14mm flash coverage,Distance-Priority Manual Flash Control, Modeling Flash, and Auto Zoomfor flash coverage from 24mm to 105mm.

Distance-Priority Manual Flash ModeOnce you’ve entered the shooting distance value, even changing theaperture won’t alter the flash exposure.

Modeling FlashPress the Modeling Flash button, and a series of low-level flashes arefired successively to confirm illumination and shadows that may be caston the subject prior to shooting.

Quick Recycling Battery PackThe supplied Quick Recycling Battery Pack SD-800 offers recycling timeas short as 2.9 seconds in Manual mode at full output.

AUTO FP High Speed SyncThis new mode offers ample fill-in flashduring shooting in bright conditions usingfast-aperture lenses, enabling effective blurin the background. Once the mode is acti-vated, high-speed flash synchronization inthe camera makes available shutter speedsthat are faster than the camera’s own flashsync speed.

Flash Value Lock (FV Lock)Flash Value represents the degree of flashexposure for the subject. FV Lock lets youmaintain the desired flash exposure duringzooming or even when recomposing a shot, allowing you to concentrate on the scene’slighting.

Wide-Area AF-Assist Illuminator Compared to the other Speedlights, the SB-800 and SB-600 emit AF-AssistIllumination over a much wider area duringautofocus operation. This gives you autofo-cus shooting capability in dim lighting evenwhen you change the focus area with acompatible camera.

Flash Color Information CommunicationColor accuracy in digital SLR flash photog-raphy is higher than ever thanks to Nikon’sCreative Lighting System. In Auto WhiteBalance mode, the master unit attached tothe digital SLR camera transmits flashcolor information to the camera. Voltage, flash duration and other variables can

affect flash color information. The datarelated to these factors is sent to the cam-era and is important in achieving optimumwhite balance.

SB-29s Reveal the beauty in the details

This Speedlight lets you use TTL automatic exposure, for wraparoundlighting of close-up subjects — free from distracting shadows. This ismade possible by two built-in flash modules which deliver full-surround illumination. The flash output balance (left:right, right:left)can be set to 1:4. And for a viewfinder preview of the effect the flashwill have on the scene you’re preparing to shoot, there’s modelingflash mode. Extremely accurate focus adjustment is supported by aconvenient focus illuminator, and a wide illlumination panel lets youshoot flash-to-subject distances closer than 40mm.The SB-29s provides an M1/32 flash output, which ensures accurateexposure with current and future generations of digital cameras fea-turing high sensitivity.

Nikon Electronic Format (NEF) File

This unique format consistsof the RAW data of animage, along with aninstruction set that pro-vides extensive image edit-ing capability not availablewith other file formats.

With a NEF file, the originalRAW data of an image isnever changed. All correc-tions and adjustments thatyou make are preserved inthe file’s instruction set.You can change the instruc-tion set as many times asyou like without ever dis-turbing the original image’sRAW data.Nikon cameras compatiblewith NEF are the D2H/D1X/D100/D70 digital SLRs, andthe COOLPIX 8700/5700digital compacts.

Nikon ViewBundled with Nikon digitalcameras, Nikon View sim-plifies image transfer andsharing, while enablingbasic image manipulationvia your computer. Andwhile fundamental adjust-ments for NEF data such ascolor balance, automaticcontrast, exposure andwhite balance can be per-formed using Nikon View, you’ll find Nikon Capture 4software to be your mostversatile NEF processingtool.

The postproduction imaging tool that’s a key element to an efficient, effective digitalimaging workflow.Nikon’s newly upgraded image-enhancement soft-ware affords you the ability to explore digital imaging more in-depth, and grants you a highdegree of control via your personal computer.

Nikon Capture 4 (ver. 4.1)A powerful postproduction tool, Nikon Capture 4 comprisesNikon Capture 4 Editor and Nikon Capture 4 CameraControl, along with the three elements (Transfer/Browser/Viewer) of Nikon View. Using these five components, you can transfer images toyour computer, view, edit, and even print them — all in asingle process. Nikon Capture 4 gives you comprehensivecontrol over the final quality of your Nikon ElectronicFormat (NEF) image data.

White Balance*The tools in the White Balance paletteare used to adjust white balance forNEF (RAW) images. White balance canbe adjusted by specifying the desiredcolor temperature or by sampling theimage for the gray point. You candefine white balance using a singlepoint or the average of an area.

Advanced RAW*Many of the attributes of NEF (RAW)image data can be altered or correctedusing the Advanced RAW feature.Exposure Compensation, Sharpening,Tone Compensation, Color Mode,Saturation Setting and Hue Adjustmentcombine to give you a high degree ofcontrol over image quality.

Vignette Control*This palette’s tools are used to correctfor loss of marginal illumination, whichcauses a drop in brightness at theedges of a photograph. Vignette Controlis most effective with images capturedusing a D-/G-Nikkor lens, and at largerapertures.

Image Dust Off*This function compares NEF (RAW)photographs with a reference imagecreated with the same camera toreduce the effects of any dust that maybe present on the low-pass filter pro-tecting the camera’s image sensor.

Digital DEE™Digital DEE (Dynamic ExposureExtender) reveals details that areobscured by shadows or highlights, correcting for underexposure in backlitsubjects or shaded areas of images andoverexposure in brightly lit areas.Note: Digital DEE™ is a technology developed byApplied Science Fiction.

CurvesUse the Curves palette to adjust thecontrast, tone (brightness) level andcolor balance of captured images, tomake maximum use of the tone rangeand color gamut offered by a particularoutput device. This high-precision fea-ture lets you make adjustments to spe-cific portions of the tone range whilereferring to the histogram display.

Noise ReductionRandom noise that appears in digitalcamera images — particularly at high-er sensitivity (ISO) settings — can beeffectively minimized using the ColorNoise Reduction function. Edge NoiseReduction makes outlines more distinctby reducing the noise along the edgesof a photo. Color Moire Reduction isalso usable with NEF images.

Fisheye Image TransformerThe tools in the Fisheye Lens paletteconvert images taken with the AF DXFisheye 10.5mm f/2.8G ED lens to rec-tilinear images. Both vertical and hori-zontal compensation can be performed.

*These features can only be applied to NEF (RAW)

image data.

Other handy, innovative features

•LCH Editor enables editing ofLuminosity (brightness), Chroma(color saturation) and Hue.

•Color Booster allows simple enhance-ment of overall color saturationaccording to the type of subject.

•The Color Balance palette offers sim-ple controls for adjustment of overallbrightness, contrast and color bal-ance for the entire image.

•Using Unsharp Mask, you canenhance image sharpness by increas-ing the contrast of the edges of theimage, while leaving other areasuntouched.

•Size/Resolution lets you specify thefinal output image size.

•Compatibility with Color Modes Ia andIIIa of the Nikon D70.

Nikon Capture 4 EditorNikon Capture 4’s Editor component provides you with a broad variety of

image adjustment tools, some of which can only be applied to NEF (RAW) data.

Close-up AttachmentLensesNikon’s highly portable,easy-to-use close-upattachment lenses screwdirectly into the frontthread of your lenses — asimple, convenient way toincrease magnification.Even when attached, youcan still use automaticexposure control and TTLmetering. And to improveimage contrast andreduce flare, all lensesare treated with Nikon

Integrated Coating. Close-up lenses numbers 0, 1and 2 are recommendedfor lenses with a focallength up to 55mm.Numbers 3T, 4T, 5T and6T are two-elementachromatic lenses thatensure a high image qual-ity. 3T and 4T work bestwith lenses from 85mmto 200mm, and 5T and 6Twith lenses from 70mmto 210mm. Numbers 5Tand 6T have a frontattachment size of 62mm;the front attachment size

for all other numbers is52mm. For close-up lens-es, the higher the lensnumbers, the closer youcan focus. For the primelens, the longer the focallength, the greater thereproduction ratio youcan obtain. Used singly orin combination, close-upattachment lenses openthe door to numerousinteresting close-upeffects. An attractiveoption for photographersjust getting into the worldof close-ups.

Auto Extension RingsPK and PNCompact and lightweightNikon Auto ExtensionRings — PK-11A, PK-12,PK-13 and PN-11 —slide on or off your cam-era in seconds for awide range of reproduc-tion ratios. The PK-11A,PK-12 and PK-13 fitbetween the camerabody and lens either sin-gle or in combinations, and retain automaticdiaphragm and meter

coupling with Nikkorlenses. This means you’re free tocompose, focus andmeter at the brightest, fullest aperture positionwithout having to manu-ally stop down the lensbefore shooting. Theserings also allow auto-matic exposure control.

Macro Adapter Ring BR-2AFits between the cameraand lens to enablereverse-mounting oflenses. It is an inexpen-sive means of obtaininga relatively high repro-duction ratio. The BR-2Aalso increases the work-ing distance for normalor wideangle lenses. The BR-2A is compatiblewith lenses that have a52mm front attachmentsize.

Macro Adapter Ring BR-5Needed when using theBR-2A with lenses thathave a 62mm frontattachment size.

Adapter Ring BR-3A handy adapter that con-verts the bayonet mountof reverse mounted lensesto the 52mm thread usedfor filters and hoods.

Filters for B&W Photography

Fil

ters

Circular Polarizing FiltersBy reducing the lightreflected from non-metallicsurfaces, polarizing filtersallow direct shootingthrough glass windows andreduce the glare fromwater surfaces and sunlittrees and grass. They arethe only filters that darkenthe sky in color photogra-phy without affecting colorbalances.

Nikon circular polarizingfilters come in a rotatingmount to enable differentangles for different degreesof polarization, and effectsmay be seen in theviewfinder as the filter isrotated. They do not inter-fere with the autofocus orauto exposure operation ofthe Nikon AF SLRs.

Filters for Color and B&W Photography

Soft Focus Filters No. 1, No. 2The Soft Focus Filter No.1 is good for portraitsand gives a "romantic"style haze to images. TheNo. 2 filter is strongerand produces a fog-likeeffect in landscapes, or

highlights a small subjectsurrounded by darkspace. Both filters comein 52mm, 62mm and72mm sizes to fit thefront thread of a Nikkorlens. For the No. 1 filter,77mm is also available.

Ultraviolet L37C, L39Skylight L1BCWhile invisible to the nakedeye, ultraviolet light canreduce contrast and detail. The colorless UV filters notonly produce sharper, non-hazy B&W prints, they cor-rect the blue or violet tintsthat may occur with colorfilm. The L37C is multilay-

er coated to further reducereflection and the L39 isgood for B&W prints ofmountain or beach scenes. Both may be used as lensprotectors. The multilayercoated Skylight L1BC alsocuts UV light and is oftenleft on the lens to protectit.

Neutral Density ND2S, ND4, ND400Since the ND filters sub-tract all light equally, theyhave no effect on color bal-ance. Instead, they reducethe amount of light enter-ing the camera. ND filtersare used to control depth offield by allowing a largeraperture without changing

the shutter speed. Theyalso prevent overexposurewhen lighting conditionsare extremely bright andwhen shooting beyond theaperture/shutter speedrange possible for the filmspeed in use. For shootingthe sun, the strongestND400 is recommended.

Yellow Y44, Y48, Y52Yellow filters absorb boththe blue and ultravioletlight, so that skies appeardarker in a B&W print. They are particularly usefulfor heightening contrast.

Mild filter Y44 and mediumfilter Y48 are best suitedfor portraits and snapshots. Y52 offers thestrongest effects and iscommonly used for land-scape photography.

Orange O56, Red R60The O56 and R60 offergreater contrast betweensky and subjects than Y-series filters. The O56subtracts green as well asblue and ultraviolet.

The R60 subtracts all col-ors of the spectrum exceptred and is often used withinfrared film for specialeffects.

Green X0, X1Green filters subtract redand blue and let throughgreen and yellow. Althoughboth X0 and X1 absorb thesame amount of blue, the

X0 absorbs less red thanthe X1, so its effect ismilder. The X0 is used forgeneral-purpose shooting, while the X1 is most effec-tive for portraits.

Gelatin Filter Holders AF-3, AF-4Accommodate gelatin or glass filters to thickness ofapprox. 2mm. The AF-3 is used with 3-inch squaregelatin filters and Nikkor lenses having an attachmentsize of 52/62/67/72/77mm. The AF-4 is used with 4-inch square gelatin filters and Nikkor lenses havingan attachment size of 52/62/67/72/77/82/95mm. Nikon also offers two dedicated hood options — theHN-36 for the AF-3 and the HN-37 for the AF-4.Several hoods of equal diameter can be stacked, depending on the focal length of the lens in use.

Gelatin Filter Holders AF-1, AF-2These enable standard 75mm gelatin filters to beused with many Nikkor lenses, the AF-1 for 52mmattachment size and the AF-2 for 72mm attach-ment size.

Amber A2, A12Because they subtract blue, amber filterscorrect the bluish colorations that some-times affects daylight film. The mild A2 fil-ter warms scenes shot on cloudy days or inthe shade. The deeper colored A12 is usedwith tungsten film for outdoor shooting infair weather.

Designed for use in combination with tele-photo lenses equipped with a slip-in filterholder, these filters reduce glare from non-metallic surfaces such as glass and water.Simply turn the rotating ring on the holderto find the most effective position. The fil-ters do not affect autofocus or auto expo-sure features.

Blue B2, B8, B12Blue filters subtract red and thus cool downcolorations. B2 is a mild filter used withdaylight film to remove the reddish tingefrom sunrise or sunset shots. The medium-blue B8 corrects color when clear flashbulbsare used with daylight film. B12 is a colorconversion filter which naturalizes the redcast produced by photofloods when shootingindoors with daylight film.

Available in attachment sizes 39mm,46mm, 52mm, 58mm, 62mm, 72mm and77mm, these neutral-color filters serve aslens protectors. They do not affect colorbalance. In addition, multilayer coatingprevents light reflection inside the glass, thus improving color rendition.
