THINK YOU HAVE A STOMACH FLU? THINK AGAIN!

Ah, the so-called stomach flu. If ever a term needed to be retired, this one is it.

There really is no such thing as a flu of the stomach. Colds and flu viruses infect the respiratory tract, with the viruses taking up residence at the top of the throat.

If you’re vomiting, you probably don’t have the flu; you either have food poisoning or a stomach bug -- more technically, gastroenteritis. Gastroenteritis is usually caused by noroviruses or rotavirus, which are not related to influenza viruses.

That being said, children are a little different. Kids with the flu often have nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. But that doesn’t mean the flu has travelled to their stomach, because it simply can’t do that.

So let’s ditch the term “stomach flu” and go with “stomach bug” – a more accurate term that’s less confusing for all of us.

For more information about the flu, visit www.ctv.ca/health.

DID YOU KNOW?

Happy Chinese New Year! 2012 is the year of the...

Chinese New Year was celebrated on January 23, and 2012 is the year of the...dragon! The key to the dragon personality is that dragons are the free spirits of the Zodiac. An extroverted bundle of energy, gifted and utterly irrepressible, everything dragons do is on a grand scale—big ideas, ornate gestures, extreme ambitions. Because they are confident, fearless in the face of challenge, they are almost inevitably successful. Dragons usually make it to the top. However, too much enthusiasm can leave them tired and unfulfilled.

Even though dragons are often willing to help others, their pride can impede them from accepting the same kind of help. Dragons’ generous personalities give them the ability to attract friends, but they can be rather solitary people at heart.

The characteristics of the Dragon Sign are tempered by one of the five Chinese elements of metal, water, wood, fire and earth overlaying a 5-year cycle of characteristics on the original 12-year cycle.

2012 is the year of the water dragon.

Water has a calming effect on the dragon’s fearless temperament. Water allows the dragon to re-direct its enthusiasm, and makes him more perceptive of others. These dragons are better equipped to take a step back to re-evaluate a situation because they understand the art of patience and do not desire the spotlight like other dragons. Therefore, they make smart decisions and are able to see eye-to-eye with other people.
