A scheme to improve the management of local water supplies in Hungerford is almost finished, Thames Water told The Adviser today.

In mid February the company started work to increase the capacity of the town’s reservoir by a third.

The £800,000 project is now in its final stages ahead of a four-week testing period to ensure the extension to the reservoir is working as planned.

Hungerford is a ‘storage reservoir,’ a covered-over holding tank that stores treated water on its way to 2,800 properties in the area.

The expanded reservoir will ensure there is always sufficient water readily available at peak times of day.

Hungerford’s water is taken from underground boreholes. It is cleaned and treated before being pumped to the reservoir, off Salisbury Road.

The treated water is then fed on demand into the local mains network to go to people’s taps as and when they need it.

After customers have used the water, the resulting wastewater is

Hungerford’s water comes from the Kennet catchment and is returned there after it is used, causing no lasting environmental impact on this important chalk stream and the wildlife habitats it supports.

“The aim of this work to expand the reservoir is to manage local water resources more effectively over the long term by increasing the treated water we hold in the reservoir.

“It will also allow us to carry out maintenance work at the site with minimal disruption to customers’ supplies.”

Thames Water supplies 2.6bn litres of water a day to its 8.8m tap water customers, recycling 14m people’s wastewater and run-off surface water – more than 4bn litres a day – safely back to the environment 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. -Simon Evans

The Adviser, Friday, September 30 to October 7, 2011

While my life has been peppered with lucky streaks, I have had a few disappointments of which two regularly intrude into my consciousness. The first concerns a fish – a very

large fish. The second concerns a bomb – a very large bomb. For many years my wife and I enjoyed the hospitality of Reggie Ward

(of the Chilton Foliat family) and his wife, Connie, on their marvellous Scottish estate, Kinnaird, through which winds the wonderful Tay, famed for its large salmon. On the walls of the billiards room of the grand house there were seven salmon in glass cases all weighing over 40 pounds caught by previous members of the Ward family or their guests. I was quick to notice that there was just enough space on the walls for one more glass case and, privately, I vowed to fill it.

After many years of salmon fishing on other rivers, my heaviest fish had been only 31 pounds so my ambition was high but, if you keep your salmon-fly or bait in the water you are always in with a chance. So, I always fished hard and long, assisted by Kinnaird’s splendid ghillie, Bob Grant.

One fine day, fishing a flashing metal bait, called a Toby, in the Green Bank pool, I hooked a salmon which quickly came close to the bank and flashed its side in the deep water. It was, easily, the biggest salmon I had ever hooked and I looked at Bob and declared ‘It could be forty pounds!’ He did not disagree.

After a long and tough fight Bob managed to gaff the fish because the bank was too high for it to be beached. My hopes remained high as it was slung on to the grass but were quickly dashed by Bob’s cry of ‘Oh Hell! It’s a razor-back!’. What he meant was that the salmon, which had certainly weighed more than 40 pounds when it had come in from the sea, had been so long in the river that it had lived on its muscles as well as its fat, losing so much weight that its sharp backbone could be felt by Bob’s finger. It weighed only 28 pounds.

Disappointment No 2 dates from 1956 when I attended Operation

Buffalo, an early-morning test of an atomic bomb, at Maralinga, the nuclear-testing ground in South Australia. After many days’ delay by bad weather, the weapon, located on top of a steel tower, was finally detonated at 5 a.m., causing an enormous fireball which vaporized the tower and everything round it..

As the RAF Director of the Operation, the late Air Vice Marshal ‘Ginger’ Weir, was a friend I was given information and facilities denied to my rival journalists. These included a flight at 500 feet over the bomb-crater only a few minutes after the blast, while scores of fires still raged, to see the effects on vehicles, tanks, old fighter planes and various test structures which had been erected .

I filed an exclusive account of this exciting experience to the London office but, while I had been airborne, Ginger had told the other journalists, including those working for international agencies, that he was calling the explosion ‘The Five-o-Clock Rock’, an allusion to Rock and Roll, which was all the rage then. The Night Editor in London was so taken by this utterance, which reached him from one of the agency reports, that he decided to lead the front page with it, with my exclusive contribution being much reduced and relegated to the bottom.

I had travelled half way round the world, successfully pulled all possible strings and pulled off a coup yet I had been scooped by an agency! Whenever I see that page, while riffling through my cuttings books, it still rankles.

JACK WILLIAMS

A FIREMAN’S MEMORIES

MEMORIES OF HUNGERFORD & THE KENNET VALLEY

We were front page news last week when The Adviser reported our own diamond wedding which followed 60 years after

the original wedding on September 22 1951.So many changes have occurred during that long

period; I was a newly joined fi reman in 1951 and in consequence it was a Fire Brigade wedding; a guard of honour outside the church and a ride around town with the fi re bell clanging until we returned to the church house for our reception. I could not contemplate a wedding until the cricket season was over, quite the reverse from my very good friend Harold North who was married a couple of months before so that he did not miss any of the football season; consequently Harold and Ruth have already celebrated their Diamond Wedding.

Sad to relate almost all the fi remen who formed the guard and honour have “passed on.” I think only Brian Tarry who now lives in Australia remains. Well to front and in charge was Offi cer in Charge Bert Wyatt my fi rst fi re chief, and incidentally it was Bert who proposed me as Chairman of the Parish Council to set me on a sequence of chairman and mayoral offi ces over 9 separate years and mainly in the Millennium year 2000.

I have talked to the historical association this week on the history of our town brigade and I am very pleased to report that 60 years after joining I am still associated with that organisation. In 1972 when the fi re station was moved from Charnham Street to Church Street, the building was sold locally as it belonged to the Hungerford Brigade not the county authority. The resultant sale enabled a small charity to be formed which gives benefi t to old ex-fi reman and then local organisations run for the benefi t of townspeople. It must be of interest to everyone in the town that the Brigade’s oldest ex-fi reman has just passed his 99th birthday. I speak of Ted Stevens who whilst he is frail and now very deaf is still very welcoming when I visit to inquire of his well being.

Back tracking to the wedding day in 1951 we were privileged to have two honour guards as Margaret was a guider and the fi remen moved over to be replaced by a splendid selection of young guides. I could continue with 60 year old thoughts but let me just conclude with giving you the names of local fi remen in 1951. Sub Offi cer Bert Wyall, Leading Fireman my father Charles Williams and Bill Hiscock, and fi remen, Bill Barnes, Bob Norris, John Price, Tommy Cox, Eddie Crame, Pete and Tom Walters and quite soon after my S1 crew came Norman Barr, Derek Whitry, Brian Tubb and Tony Wells. We collectively did great service for the town but it was a truly great social collection of local men anxious to serve but at the same to enjoy each other’s sense of humour.

Andrew Charles Tilley

Woodlands Lifestyle of Hungerford was opened on 18th April 2011 by Anthony and Sarah Jones. Sarah, a local craftsperson with a strong background in retail,

had been considering making the move from selling at Craft Fairs, with her friend Fiona Smart, to opening her own shop. When her mother, Robyn McDonald tragically died of Breast Cancer, Sarah decided to push ahead with her dream in honor of her mother.

Woodlands Lifestyle is a wonderful mix of old and new. Sarah successfully combines fi ne art and antiques, provided by David Guidir and Douglas McDonald, with affordable handmade jewellery, glassware, ceramics and soft furnishings. The majority of the items are produced and supplied by local crafts people, however she also stocks a small selection of Ness products, including a range of their coats and shoes, plus Quintessentially and Stasia products.

The business began with Sarah and Fiona’s work and, via word of mouth, now includes work from Toby Carey, Hillary Reem, Theresa Hing, Katya Pilkington (Brandy Wine Bay), Heather Miles, Sue Lucey, Kay Walker and Sue May.

Sarah is planning a Christmas Preview Event towards the end of October for customers to browse the shop whilst enjoying a glass of mulled wine and a mince pie. Much of the Christmas stock will either be of a limited quantity or unique.

Continued from page 1. The scale of the problem has been highlighted in two recent

television reports including Panorama and Points West. Charlotte Hitchmough of ARK (Action for River Kennet) is quoted as refering to the river not being this low since 1976, when the extreme summer conditions were no doubt a major contributor.

The river is also low along its entire length below Marlborough.

27.9.11EENIE MEENIE MARKETA GREAT SUCCESSHungerford’s fi rst eenie meenie market last Sunday was an over-whelming success. Many local families came to buy second hand baby and children’s clothes, toys and books; there were great goodie bags and there was a free raffl e for all children. UPSTREAM FISH MIGRATIONDISCUSSED AT MARLBOROUGHThe last Marlborough Town Council amenities and open spaces committee meeting received a report from Mr Mark Heelis of the Environment Agency.Among points discussed was upstream fi sh migration, currently limited on the River Kennet to Marlborough by sluice gates at Town Mill and Coopers Meadow and the possibility of installing fi sh ladders to alleviate the issue.

TRIBUTES TO FORMER MAYORMarlborough town councillors at their last meeting observed a silence in memory of former Mayor of Marlborough Mrs Lois Delyle-Turner. A memorial service for Mrs Turner was held at St Mary’s Church on September 14.

NEW COMMMITTEE MEMBERCr E.M. Hannaford-Dobson has been elected to serve on Marlbor-ough Town Council’s property committee to replace Cr Houlden who resigned from the committee.

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS REPORTThe next full Hungerford Town Council meeting on Monday, October 3 will consider the plan for Hungerford’s now-famous Christmas lights.

ADP EMPLOYEES CLIMBCOTOPAXI VOLCANOThree ADP employees, two from Hungerford and one from South Africa have just returned from Ecuador having successfully climbed to the top of Cotopaxi, the highest currently-active volca-no in the world. Geordie Taylor, Euan Smith and Steve Robinson reached the 19,347 feet summit (5,897m) at dawn on Wednesday 21st September having climbed the last 4,000ft through the night. The fi nal ascent is made over the glaciers that cover Cotopaxi’s peak, an almost symmetrical cone. The volcano has erupted more than 50 times in the last 300 years. The ascent over the glacier required night-lights, crampons, ropes and ice-axes. Under the supervision of experienced Andean guides, the three negotiated the treacherous crevasses, ice walls and thin air in wind-chilled temperatures as low as minus-30 degrees-C. ADP has kindly do-nated £1,000 to Hungerford’s Rotary Club in recognition of their achievements. The same three adventurers reached the summit of Kilimanjaro in 2008 and kayaked down the Zambezi River in 2010.

30.9.11METAL DETECTING DAY RAISES£2500 FOR ROTARYN CHARITIESThanks to Peter Kindersley and his staff, Sheepdrove Organic Farm welcomed The Rotary Club of Hungerford for their annual Metal Detecting day and enabled enthusiasts to contribute nearly £2500 to the Club’s nominated local charities.

President, David Wallis, on the left, seen with Yvonne Haddrell and Neil McPherson, was very impressed with the attendance and most interested to see some of the objects found. The pic-tures show some of the “booty” such as Roman coins, nail cleaner, brooches, buttons, musket balls, thimbles, sheeps bell and even a dog bowl made in 2007

Tools worth thousands of pounds have been stolen from at least 13 vehicles in Marlborough. One tradesman replaced tools after an earlier raid and then lost the replacements to thieves. Police have warned people to keep their vehicles locked .

A Hungerford June Flower Festival has been suggested to celebrate The Queen’s diamond jubilee next year.

The suggestion was made at the last Hungerford Town Council meeting at which the mayor, Cr Martin Crane appealed to townspeople for celebratory suggestions.

Walks and a general sprucing up of the town have already been suggested.

The council is also discussing a more pro-active role in marketing Hungerford.

Hungerford Town Council is retaining the services of former councillor Rod Desmeules in relation to the town’s Chistmas lights. Rod has been the backbone behind the town’s lights for many years during which the lights have been pronounced by far the best in the area. The last Hungerford Town Council meeting was told “Rod really is Mr Hungerford Christmas Lights”.

SHOW AN OUTSTANDING SUCCESS

The Royal County of Berkshire Show at Newbury Showgrounds was again an outstanding success at the weekend with thousands of people attending and rain failing to dampen enthusiasm.

St John’s in Marlborough is getting ready for what it expects to be its biggest ever school reunion on Sat 8 October, involving ex-students from St John’s as

well as its two predecessors, Marlborough Grammar School and Marlborough Secondary Modern.

The day has been put together following requests from many ex-students to repeat the 2009 event and invite ex-students to the new building.

Kate Hunter, St John’s Development Offi cer says the day is going to be one to remember. “So many people attended our last reunion and met up with old friends who they had lost touch with that we are sure October 8th will be another great day. If people have questions about the day they should email [email protected] .

We are aiming to raise money from the event to help our fundraising campaign for our tennis courts and all-weather pitch - the two areas that we haven’t yet been able to complete at the new school. So not only will visitors have a great time, but they will also be doing their bit to support the young people of Marlborough!

The school will be open during the day from 11:00am to 4:00pm for ex-students of St John’s, Marlborough Grammar School and Marlborough Secondary Modern to meet up. The restaurant will be open for lunch and refreshments and a licensed bar will be available all day. Tours of the new school building, which opened in December 2009, will be available, giving ex-students a chance to look around and compare the facilities at the new building to their own school days.

Boards will be available for students to leave messages and get in touch with old friends, and everyone is being asked to bring a copy of a photo of themselves from their schooldays to add to the display.

In the evening ex-St John’s student Mark Jones will be guest DJ at a School Reunion disco featuring music from the 70s, 80s and 90s. Tickets are on sale for the School Disco at £10 per person from St John’s. A licensed bar will be available throughout the evening. Anyone wanting to reserve a classroom for a class reunion or buy School Disco tickets should send a cheque (Disco £10 per person, Daytime room bookings £10 per hour) and a stamped, self-addressed envelope to Reunion Disco, St John’s, Marlborough SN8 4AX.

The reunion day is on the same day as Marlborough Mop Fair and some ex-students are planning to meet up for a full day, starting with a tour of the school and lunch, then spending a few hours in town at the Mop Fair, before returning to the school disco in the evening.

Information about the day has been posted on the School Facebook and Friends Reunited sites and more information is available from Kate Hunter at St John’s on 01672 519575 or [email protected].

EX-STUDENTS PLAN REUNION DAY TO

REMEMBER

The Salvage Trashion Show held at St John’s Theatre on the Hill last November raised almost £7,000 for two good causes, Charlie’s Charity, and the fundraising campaign

for the St John’s School sports facilities, each receiving a cheque for £3,475.

Two of the organisers, Jane Lamb and Angela Hobbs, visited St John’s recently to present a cheque to Headteacher Dr Patrick Hazlewood. Jane’s son Charlie was a St John’s student and Charlie’s Charity was set up in his memory following his death on 26 September 2009 at age 18.

The competition was called Salvage and it was all about designing a wearable item or outfi t made from old bits and pieces that were past their wear-by date into something individual and long lasting. The judges wanted to see what young people could do with their old clothes to turn them into tomorrow’s wearable fashion trends, encouraging creativity and awareness of the planet and their future. Encouraging young sustainable entrepreneurs to show off their talent. The results were outstanding.
