We celebrate graduations, weddings, summer vacations and national holidays. The church marks the Day of Pentecost as the birthday of the church. At Hope Church, we decorate with red and orange decorations to signify the flames of Spirit, and we sing happy birthday to the church. If the presence and power of the Holy Spirit at that first Pentecost marks the beginning of the church, the Spirits work was not finished on that day, since it is the Spirit who creates the church in every new generation. For example, it is the Spirit that makes our meal of bread and cup more than a remembrance of the Last Supper but instead a way to connect to the living Christ who is still speaking among us. From the book of Acts, we read, I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Acts 2:17. The Spirit sparked creativity energy across the ages and today, it allows us to dream new dreams about how to be the church in 2019 and moving forward. Just as the Pentecost, when foreigners without a common language could all understand each other, it is the Spirit that gathers the church with people from a variety of backgrounds and with a variety of stories. We come through the doors as individuals from different places along our life journeys. We rejoice that through the gift of the Spirit we can embrace our uniqueness and celebrate unity. Gods Spirit was there at the beginning of creation and has never ceased providing the inspiring creativity and hope we find in God. This same Spirit spoken through the prophetsstill speaks through a variety of people today. So let us celebrate the birthday of the church on Pentecost, but let us also discern where Gods Spirit is moving today, both in and outside Hope Church and the church universal. We celebrate the Spirit giving life, creating what is new, renewing what is old, and restoring what is worn out. As we enjoy family celebrations and remember the birthday of the church, let us never stop praying the ancient prayer of the church: Come, Holy Spirit, Come!Let us continue to open the doors and windows of our hearts and welcome Gods love to flow through us. We have entered the season of celebrations. We celebrate graduations, weddings, summer vacations and national holidays. The church marks the Day of Pentecost as the birthday of the church. At Hope Church, we decorate with red and orange decorations to signify the flames of Spirit, and we sing happy birthday to the church. If the presence and power of the Holy Spirit at that first Pentecost marks the beginning of the church, the Spirit’s work was not finished on that day, since it is the Spirit who creates the church in every new generation. For example, it is the Spirit that makes our meal of bread and cup more than a remembrance of the Last Supper but instead a way to connect to the living Christ who is still speaking among us. From the book of Acts, we read, “I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.” Acts 2:17. God’s Spirit was there at the beginning of creation and has never ceased providing the inspiring creativity and hope we find in God. This same Spirit “spoken through the prophets” still speaks through a variety of people today. We celebrate the Spirit giving life, creating what is new, renewing what is old, and restoring what is worn out. As we enjoy family celebrations and remember the birthday of the church, let us never stop praying the ancient prayer of the church: “Come, Holy Spirit, Come!” Let us continue to open the doors and windows of our hearts and welcome God’s love to flow through us. The Strengthen the Church offering supports the expansion of ministry and growth

of UCC local congregations. Your support of this offering will help the UCC fulfill its

commitment to creating a just world for all by investing in new ministries and prac-

tices that meet the emerging needs of local communities.

In 2018, your support:

• Increased church vitality by awarding 12 grants totaling $350,000 through the

New and Renewing Spiritual Communities program.

• Ensured excellence in ministry through the completion of the Habakkuk group

and the Manual on Ministry.

• Worked to alleviate poverty through the Adese Fellowship program for spiritual

entrepreneurship.

• Strengthened your local church through the services provided by the UCC con-

ference.

Please join us in planting the seeds needed to grow and sustain our denomination by

making a gift to the Strengthen the Church offering.

HOPE PANTRY

Our Hope Pantry is always looking for a

few good volunteers. Once a month you will have an

opportunity to sign up and help our neighbors. On the

day before our pantry, six volunteers are needed at

1:00 pm for about one and one half hours to unload

and stock bread and produce. Then the rolling pantry

shelves are put in place for Saturday, and we prepare

the shopping bags. On Saturday, six volunteers are

needed to shop with our clients, weigh the bags and

help them to the cars. Helpers need to arrive by

9:50, and we should be closed up by 12:30. Please

consider helping with this rewarding mission.

We, as a church, and each one of us individually, are

blessed to be able to support our neighbors, and this

mission returns so much to all of us. We hope that

you have the opportunity to participate in this

ongoing project, as we continue to grow HOPE as a

pantry and an extension of our church.

We will continue to need your support to keep the

pantry stocked. Your donations of paper towels,

toilet tissue, tooth paste, bar soap, shampoo, laundry,

dish detergent, and feminine hygiene products are

very helpful.

CHRISTIAN MISSION AND WITNESS

PANTRY UPDATE ~ MAY

We distributed 1,608 lbs. of food, paper

products and cleaning supplies in a single

day! We served 34 individuals and fami-

lies. Thank you to all our dedicated donors and volun-

teers who helped feed those in need.

You made all the difference! Our Second Annual “Pasta with a Purpose” fundraiser held on May 15, 2019, benefiting

“HOPE Food Pantry” was a great success! With your generous donations and your participation in the evening, we raised $5,232.00 that will go a l

ong way in feeding those who hunger in our local community and funding “HOPE Food Pantry”. The generous support of all those who attended our “Pasta with a Purpose” benefit helps

make it possible for “HOPE Food Pantry” to exist and makes our community a great place to live.

Thank you again for your generous support! It means the world to those we serve!

GET READY..............PLANT

Here in Michigan the rule of thumb is "No planting until after Memorial Day." I

am sure this rule is based on how fickle Mother Nature can be. So in my prepa-

ration for planting I came across a product that is natural, inexpensive, not

hard to find and good for the plants.

It is EPSOM SALT. A product used way before the fancy fertilizers we see on

the shelves today. Epsom Salt active ingredient is Magnesium Sulfate a miner-

al. It can be used on Lawns, Garden plants and shrubbery, Tomatoes, Ever-

greens, Azaleas, Rhododendrons, Trees, Garden Start-up and Houseplants. You

can diluted in water and spray it or sprinkle it directly on the ground.

Here are a few reason to use Epsom Salt for plants:

- speeds up plant growth

- increase a plants nutrient uptake

- deters pests

- increases flavor of fruit and veggies

- improves overall plant health

After reading about all the ways Epsom Salt can improve my garden I am surely

going to give it a try. Also remember that Epsom Salt is kinder to our environ-

ment. Application information can be found on the container or just use Goggle

for lots more information.

Happy Gardening,

Karen Miller

THANK YOU

Hope United Church of Christ was very instrumental in PFLAG-CT’s

initial launch as a chapter back in 2014, and the collaboration has

only improved over the years. It’s gone from giving us a “home”, to

presenting a faith-based panel on LGBT+ issues together, to put-

ting our meeting information on the sign. In return, we have at-

tended the Hope’s Food Pantry fundraiser and ask for food pantry

donations from anyone attending our meetings. Over the past 4 ½ years, we’ve seen our

numbers in membership grow and the attendance at our meetings has increased as

well. We are slowly becoming known throughout Macomb County with the assistance of

Hope United Church of Christ. PFLAG-CT thanks God for the outpouring of kindness and

love from everyone at Hope.

Our deepest gratitude,

PFLAG-CT

HOPE CHURCH PRAYER LIST

Our congregation knows that prayer is our tool for connecting to God. Togeth-er, we pray in worship and we pray at home. Please check the prayer list in both the newsletter and the bulletin to help us keep our prayer requests current. You may contact the church office to remove or add a name. We also have a prayer sculpture in the church lobby and you are welcome to write a prayer re-quest on a heart and hang in on the sculp-ture. When we lift our concerns in pray-er, we will surely know the presence of the Lord.

Please remember those on our Prayer List … with a phone call, card, note and keep them in your Thoughts & Prayers. For those who are silent with your concerns and needs, a special pray-er for ALL of you to have the strength, courage and patience to deal with your individual situation.
