A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORYThe mansion was constructed for Thomas V. Porter, a successful businessman in wholesale groceries. When it was constructed in 1902, the mansion faced Church street at the corner of Julia—one of the most prominent residential areas of Downtown Jacksonville.
Henry J. Klutho was selected to design the mansion, which the architect described as “Classic Colonial.” The highlight of the mansion is the grand two-story portico with six Corinthian columns, a serpentine balcony and a coffered ceiling. The mansard roof originally had a widow’s walk and featured an ornate one-story veranda on three sides. This veranda was removed when the mansion was purchased in 1925 by the First Christian Church, which moved Porter’s home around the corner to its present location. The church used the mansion as offices and classrooms and added a two-story section to the rear for additional office space.
The residence was saved from demolition and restored in 1981 for use as KBJ’s corporate office. Original architectural features such as mahogany woodwork and solid mahogany pocket doors, decorative cornices and moldings, and stained glass in the staircase and dining room were all preserved. The mansion’s chandelier and a lighted sculpture, seen in the photographs of the house when it was occupied by the Porter family, are still there. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. PARKING
